Mr Spreadsheet,

Do you recognise this man? He is world famous for his use of spreadsheets and devising Itineraries, he can create a spreadsheet for anything you desire from your weekly household budget to the number of rivets per girder in the Forth Road Bridge, including where they were sourced and cost per thousand.

You see that number, 3003, well to this gentleman it’s not just a simple number on a Metrolink Tram, it is symmetrical, it has 4 digits (even number), it has 2 sets of 2 numbers (two 3’s and two 0’s), although the number 3003 is in actual fact an odd number by the time he is finished with it in a spreadsheet it would end up even, trust me. It is also a palindrome (reads the same backwards as it does forwards), there is no end to what he can do with this number; in fact any number. What this man can do with numbers and symmetry is just beyond belief.

So if you do recognise him could you please inform his family where you saw him,’Deansgate-Castlefield’ Tram Station. Oh and in case you are wondering who the TOG is, it’s Mr. Andy Rouse, my partner in crime for the day.

At the end of the Seventies, the only professional microcomputer was the Apple II. Connected to a dot-matrix printer and equipped with a spreadsheet, a word processor and a draft database, it allowed freelancers to carry out the basic tasks of what was already called office automation.

This Eucalyptus was planted as seedling that I was given in 2004. Then killed back to the ground in the bad winter of 2010 then surprisingly regenerated from the ground as 2 stems and now part of a crowded hedge. This plant is about 3 or 4 metres in height now. I think last year was the first that it produced flowers. I am really loving it this year! no idea what the species is.

edit - probably Eucalyptus pauciflora

I watched this girl for ages on Sunday working the oregano flowers. I have quire a lot of oregano in pots. You really have to have quite a lot of something in flower in pots before the honey bees will start to work it at all. They just dont bother with things that are not substantive.

A Day Trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway for the Saturday of a 3 day Steam Gala,

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

There were 2 Visiting Engines and some of 5 of the Home Fleet Locomotives scheduled to run on an intensive timetable.

Here, on my first Steam Heritage Railway Visit of 2022, no. 41241, an Ivatt designed and Crewe Works built Class 2MT 2-6-2T locomotive is ready to power the Shuttle which was operating between Keighley ad Ingrow West with a loco on each end to save a run round which is not possible at Ingrow West.

This week-end involved 2 Heritage Railways with the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

Here, after arriving at Holt Station on the front of the Class 9F Double-Header, I got a photo of Loco 92203 - "Black Prince", a Riddles designed, Swindon Works built - BR Class 9F - 2-10-0

and WD 90775 "The Royal Norfolk Regiment" posing for Photos

before 90775 joined 8572 to form another Double Header.

I was VERY PLEASED to get this photo as I thought it would be unusual.

There were 6 Locomotives in Steam for the Gala Event Sunday.

The Wurzels - Golden Brown

www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kMZz9Bx5gc

Somewhere in the middle of Wednesday morning I peered through a mild headache at the list of half term jobs I'd jotted down in my notebook. I was feeling tired and bored to the end of my wits with the banality of work and endless deadlines. November is possibly the most intense few weeks of the entire year for me, and though it's the last time I have to go through it before half a lifetime of spreadsheets comes to an end, I'm not looking the slightest bit forward to it. Seriously, if you're considering accountancy for a living, I urge you to think again. If you're thinking of taking your accountancy skills into the world of education - just don't do it. Or at least don't stay forever like I have. Maybe I'm just suffering from burnout after more than thirty years of endless nine to five, but it is exceptionally tedious almost all of the time. I tried to talk my son into doing something more interesting for a living, but he ignored my advice and followed me into this world. I tried anyway.

What cheered me though was that there were ticks beside most of the items on this list. I read the entries one more time and noted that the scariest items were all marked as either complete or as far underway as possible. "At least when term resumes I've got a head start," I reasoned to myself, and with that came a rare moment of spontaneity. "Can you manage if I take a couple of days off?" I asked Katie, my wonderful deputy. "Of course. You need a rest." After all she has to look at me every day so she can tell better than just about everyone else when I need a break.

And so here I am, sitting at home with a small vat of coffee after a delightful Thursday adventure with Lee, which included an all day breakfast with what must surely be the best view from a supermarket cafe in Britain (Sainsbury's in Penzance if you need to ask) and a wander to a predictably people packed Land's End to make some test shots for Longships lighthouse, to which we'll return in more suitable conditions later in the winter. We certainly won't be returning while they try to charge us seven quid to park for an hour there anyway. We drove back down a road for half a mile and parked along a side road before walking back.

We'd planned to finish here at Sennen Cove in the knowledge that the high tide would bring some drama to the breakwater. It's always worth an outing when the sea is in a bad mood. What we weren't prepared for as we drove down the big hill into the cove was the sight of three figures leaping from the breakwater into the protected harbour area as a huge wave hit it. Surely we'd imagined it. Who'd do a crazy thing like that a day after a storm that had brought thirty foot high waves to the Cornish coast?

We hadn't imagined it. Four local lads, none of them older than about fifteen, spent the next hour clambering onto the narrow wall and leaping into the water beneath them at the moment each roller hit the breakwater in front of a large number of onlookers. It struck me that if any of them somehow ended up on the western side of the breakwater they'd be in terrible trouble, possibly with fatal results, but this thought didn't appear to have occurred to them. Maybe I'm just getting old - I suspect they do this a lot at high tide and they probably wait for days like this. I won't be trying it myself in any case.

Later on, when to my relief I'd counted all four of them leaving the scene and heading for home they were replaced by an enormous seal at the water's edge drawn here by a lone angler bracing his rod against the ever energetic flow beneath him. If there were any fish to be had, my money was on the seal. The light faded, the onlookers moved on, and with more than enough raw files to try and choose one from our work was done. It had been so much more fun than eight hours of staring at a computer in confusion. I've decided that once the worst of the next few weeks is done I'm going to have another long weekend too.

Happy Friday everyone - enjoy your weekends.

Providence & Worcester 2215 leads Connecticut Southern train CSO-4 south on the Springfield Line at Hayden Station Road in Windsor. 2215 is one of the two "Super 7s" that were on the P&W roster. 2216 has already been shipped off to Ohio. I'd be willing to guess 2215 will be shortly behind. I guess it must make sense on the G&W spreadsheet.

Happy Holidays!

(Inspired by Ryan Howerter's Ice Planet Biodome.)

Today (aptly) the WAH theme is computers. I am currently using up my annual leave by pulling together information on cornish chapels and churches (current and historic) to help me in the quest to photo them all (I am now collaborating with some national projects to do this, which is very exciting).

However, today, for some reason, I lost the entire spreadsheet for Kerrier district (2 days work). Not sure why, but it is not retrievable so I have had to start all over again!! Good thing it's a 'hobby' and i find it interesting!

this also explains my fairly minimal presence on Flickr - once the spreadsheets are done, I will be back properly!!

The bee is using 2 flowers to spread her weight. When she lands on one flower the stem bends under the weight and ends up against the top of the wall. Pale cream pollen load clearly illustrated.

Here, 46521 is an Ivatt designed Class 2 Loco for the LMS and it was Swindon Works built as a 2MT 2-6-0 Loco Which is at Swithland Sidings.

Here, on my first Steam Heritage Railway Visit of 2022, Taff Vale no 85, a Riches designed and Kitson built Class 02 0-6-2T locomotive is heading Loco no. 41241, an Ivatt designed and Crewe Works built Class 2MT 2-6-2T are running round the train at Oxenhope Station after just moving forward into the head shunt.

This is the first Double Header which hauled a train that I caught today.

I don't understand.

Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is in Yorkshire, England, UK and Geographically in Europe.

By 2022-06-08 I must have tried again and it got accepted.

No conference calls, no spreadsheets or teams, no bad coffee, no confining walls ... just me, fresh air, my camera and the universe. Everything was in order.

There was something about the way the woman swayed gently as she walked towards us across the dimly lit floor of the pub that suggested she was well practised at the art of disguising how much she'd had to drink. Just the slightest hint betrayed the likelihood she'd been to the bar a couple of times more than we had; no more than that. Dave is pretty much teetotal because he says he's allergic to alcohol and only allows himself a single pint of a black stuff when we go to Twickenham for the rugby internationals. I'm not averse to the odd pint, but I can't remember the last time I followed it up with a second one, so while I'd have probably been staggering about in a zig-zag fashion, he'd have been lying face down on the floor and asking to be taken home. In each hand she held a brown paper bag containing a lukewarm pasty, the final leftovers from the gathering. "There's always a few left at the end - I'd have made sure they were all gone earlier than this if I were in charge," she announced with not the slightest hint of a slur. "Here you go." It would serve me well for lunch on Saturday while Ali was at work, I thought. I've no idea who our go-between was, but the pasty was the final present from the man we'd come to say farewell to.

Sometimes, maybe once or twice in a lifetime the sudden departure of a public figure is shared worldwide and everything stands still for a moment or two. We remember exactly where we were, who we were with and what we were doing during the moment frozen in time. Some people I've heard refer to these as the "Kennedy" moments. I wasn't born when the events in Dallas took place, but I remember so clearly waking up at the house of my then in-laws in Preston in the north of England and finding everyone gaping silently at a television set showing a tunnel in Paris with the wreckage of a big black Mercedes dashed against a dark wall. In the 1990's I was in my own tornado blown tunnel, a young father trying to find the best version of himself for his two small children; a young husband struggling to cope with the trials of an already failing marriage; a young man who'd gone wrong somewhere before and now found himself trapped in a dead end job that rewarded little, neither financially nor spiritually. Events in the lives of the great and the good largely passed us by as we did our best to keep our heads above water. There was an interview on the television that gripped the nation, yet we barely registered it; a repeated comment in the office about "three in the marriage right from the start" didn't even raise an eyebrow. And then one afternoon Princess Diana was in Truro, visiting a drug rehabilitation centre just along the road from the firm of land agents where I worked. We stood in the staff car park, dutifully waiting for the entourage to come past. I really wasn't that bothered, but reflected that at least we'd been unchained from our desks for half an hour longer than usual. "What's all the fuss? She's only a square's daughter," boomed the surviving founding partner, a man we thought almost as aristocratic as the royals themselves. I think he meant "squire" rather than "square," but that's how he spoke. Whether he really meant that or it was his attempt at humour I was never certain, but he wasn't impressed that the police had made him park somewhere down the road rather than let him through. Eventually a huge limousine crept along the road past us and for a few fleeting seconds we saw her, and in those moments I was stunned; cast under a spell in fact. I hadn't been prepared for the movie star looks and the smile that almost melted the granite gateposts at the entrance to the car park. I'd like to tell you that for the briefest second I caught her eye, but of course I didn't. Suddenly I understood the mania of the previous fifteen years that until then had completely eluded me. I've never seen another human who exuded such radiance. That smile. It hit me again like a hammer blow on that late summer morning when we heard the news and the country went into mourning. I still see that smile - another frozen moment in fact. Some things just stay with you.

There are other events that only affect a family, or a circle of friends. I was photographing the remains of this Laurel tree after we'd walked down from the freezing cold summit of Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest mountain when the phone sounded in my pocket. It was Dave with some bad news. Les had been found at his home by the police, who'd had to break in because he wasn't answering anyone's messages. He'd been dead for some time - a heart attack was the culprit it seemed; ironic for a man with such a big heart. Seventy really doesn't seem that old anymore. I'd come to know him through the workplace, and in the wider world during the last few years we moved at the peripheries of a group of friends that he'd grown up with. We hadn't worked directly together, but with someone like Les that didn't matter. Warm, gentle, kind, hilarious and loved by so many of his colleagues he was one of those rare people who transcended the norms of mutual respect in a place that employed well over a thousand staff. In all of the years I worked there, only a tiny number of people seemed to garner such universal approval from their workmates. The students adored him too - he was an IT support tutor - often interrupting my workflow with a spreadsheet problem he wanted me to look at. Because it was Les, I never minded the intrusion. "You're a treasure," he'd always say as I explained my solution to him. People would just smile if you mentioned him. "What's he like?" they would giggle as they remembered something daft he'd said or did just the other day, no doubt that with famous mischievous twinkle in his eye as he did so. Les had a habit of making people feel at ease. One afternoon he appeared at the door of the office I'd just been unwillingly promoted into and found me peering miserably into my screen. "What the f**k you doing in here?" he frowned, before characteristically breaking into a big trademark grin. It was the first time I'd laughed all day. I remembered the time we'd finally managed to persuade him to turn up for a Sunday morning staff football match after years of trying, the first time he'd played in about forty years, so he told us. When he scored a goal there was a bout of unabashed man hugging of the kind usually only reserved for the professional game. We talked about that game for years, long after all the other ones had been mostly forgotten. Dave later told me Les had played at county level as a teenager, and then for a local rugby club well into adulthood. Some of the stories Dave tells about the naughty side of Les from those rugby tours are best left unwritten, no matter how funny they are - besides which I wouldn't do them justice. I never quite get the full thread of exactly what happened because he's always helpless with laughter at the memory well before getting to the end of the anecdote. Sport aside Les was a very gifted artist, winning the school prize every year, always encouraged my burgeoning love for landscape photography. What makes things all the more sad is that he was alone at the end. He wasn't quite as beautiful as the Princess of Wales - almost, but not quite, although a passing resemblance to Paul Newman in his youth was mentioned in the eulogy and he unarguably exuded a certain radiance. His fabled orange perma-tan was legendary among his friends for starters.

The funeral was last week. Dave and Gareth, who'd grown up with him were among the coffin bearers. Henry delivered a moving speech about the "dear sweet boy" who'd made him feel so welcome on his first day at his new school after moving down from Yorkshire and had remained friends with him for more than fifty years. Tim, with tears in his eyes and a contagious lump in his throat faltered through the final lines of "This Is My Cornwall." He only just managed to complete the song. Ali and I, who only knew him for the last twenty years of his life croaked the words to the bits we knew. Friendships that endured a lifetime for those who shared them. In the pub we chewed thoughtfully on pasties and remembered the Les we loved with former colleagues who'd long since retired. And then the lady under the influence weaved towards us with the second round of pasties. It seemed rude not to - especially when Les had sent them to us.

And so it's the memory of Les I will forever cherish whenever I look at this picture and return to that frozen moment; the feeling of emptiness that a dearly held friend and a lovable rogue had gone from the world. This picture will always be his. Ali was silent when I told her what the message said. "He was lovely," she whispered. We barely spoke as we continued our descent, each of us lost in quiet sadness on the lonely mountain path. I'd originally edited this in black and white, but Les was a colourful man. I think he'd have liked the silver and green against the misty mountainside. Rest in peace Les - I'll keep sharing pictures with you mate.

Sorry, the girl is AI SDXL

Maybe we'll all go for real someday +++

Everyone Counts takes humanity on a hike. It combines a cutout of the number of living people now, with landscapes and people. Real photos and random dreams.

This paper sum is updated with every shot or photomontage, a clock of personal units. At the sustained pace of our species' growth, Everyone Counts evokes density and change.

The mathematical value of Everyone Counts fits in a single cell of a spreadsheet, while the represented value is immeasurable. Yet, humanity struggles to associate the qualities of the individuals who compose it. Well, isn’t AI going to solve all of the challenges of our time for us?

Everyone Counts is made of thick paper, proudly casting its shadows in a white room. Outside, the numbers are shaken by the wind and fear the rain. In the landscape, Everyone Counts is a fragile abstraction, never blending in.

Everyone Counts is also cumbersome and difficult to handle alone. This condition imposes new investigations, so I’m only getting started. I’ll meet someone who blows, cuts, assembles, wraps, burns, heals, rebels, counts, updates, dresses, drags, steals, plays, cheats, eats, seeks, chooses, refuses, tramples, illuminates, supports, ignores, raises, overlays, slides, copies, loves, waters...

Because even when you're the genius inventor, responsible for the construction of a new generation of powerplants running on the trans-pink ore based breakthrough technology you discovered -that will render steam wholly obsolete-, you still have to fill in the administrative paperwork...

Boa noite, amigas! :)

Hoje é dia de sorteio! \o/

BOA SORTE! :D

Sorteio válido apenas para território brasileiro.

O RESULTADO SAIRÁ NA PRÓXIMA QUARTA-FEIRA DIA 20-06-2012 ÀS 23:00 APROXIDAMENTE. :)

A Quick Trip to see the Victor and Vulcan together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum - I was lucky to get a lift to the museum while a friend had an abortive shopping trip (long queues) to a shopping outlet.

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

403 - "Victor" was Visiting from the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and meeting up with 401 - "Vulcan", a Home Locomotive built by the same factory for the .Victor and Vulcan together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum.

Here, 403 - "Victor" has just hauled a Train up from Percy Main and is about to run round to haul a train I catch to the other end of the approximately 2 mile long line.
