A Quick Trip to see the "Victor" and "Vulcan" together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum - I was lucky to get a lift to the museum while a friend had an abortive shopping trip (long queues) to a shopping outlet.

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

403 - "Victor" was Visiting from the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and meeting up with 401 - "Vulcan", a Home Locomotive built by the same factory for the "Victor" and "Vulcan" together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum.

Here, 401 - "Vulcan" is leading Visiting Loco 403 - "Victor" as a Double-Header has completed the journey back from Percy Main station to Middle Engine Lane.

A Photo from Day 3 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

The Swanage Railway runs trains from Norden via Corfe Castle, another station and a halt to Swanage Station or the other way round so there is some very pleasant scenery to look at and photograph when travelling along the line.

There is ample car parking at the Norden end of the line so I started there.

The day I went during the sort of main summer holidays, there were 2 trains running both hauled by Steam Locomotives.

Here, 31806, a Maunsell designed SR U Class 2-6-0 loco has just Hauled a train with me on it past Corfe Castle back to Norden Station and has paused on the run round loop for an inspection by the footplate crew. This is my last photo of this trip to Swanage Railway and it is the West Somerset Railway next.

I've been trying to get a picture of a bee on this for ages. So often the ones I am familiar with have flowers that are a bit too high. These ones in Dundee were all at head height or lower. Made for an enjoyable 10 minutes with the camera! Such a beautiful heady scent too - i hadnt realised that before!

Orange pollen load on view.

Will go on spreadsheet!

Clearly, this camera was done by a committee, not by, nor for photographers. However, once you accept the ergonomics disaster factor, you will soon realize what a beauty you've got on your hands.

Yes, I am liking it more and more.

Black Rock cottage, Glencoe, Scotland

We've just got back from a week long holiday touring through Glencoe and the Isle of Skye, but we're still having a debate/argument as to who ACTUALLY suggested going there in the first place! Kathy wanted a midge free day with dark nights in an isolated lodge, bottle(s) of wine and a good book... and me - all the scenery I could merrily click away at until my heart's content! What we got was light showers, sudden downpours, driving rain, torrential downpours, non-stop rain, storms, high winds, gales, ferry cancellations, falling rocks, landslides, road closures and the odd scenic flood... oh, did I mention the rain?

And to cap it all off... Storm Callum, just to make the 400 mile drive home a little more tense and interesting!

The drive up on the Saturday morning went with 'spreadsheet' precision with every stop neatly planned (I'm sure there's a song in there somewhere). We left Manchester in the customary rain, which eventually cleared just after the northern lakes. A full hearty breakfast stop at Tebay and a couple of 'optional wee' stops on route and we were soon at Loch Lomond in brilliant sunshine and blue skies. At this point, I feel it's worth mentioning my photography hopes. I wasn't interested in pretty colourful blue sky images but was rather hoping for dark stormy skies full of menace (but without all the bloody rain) so in hindsight, be careful what you wish for!

After a couple of snap shots at either end of Loch Lomond we headed straight for my first proper location shot - the Black Rock cottage, just off the A82 and on the single track road to the Glencoe Mountain Resort. Holidaying at this time of year I was expecting very few tourists, but how wrong could I be! The area was packed and parking a nightmare, but more of that in another upload. When we arrived at this cottage my heart sank as hikers and mountaineers had already parked up were busy unloading their gear from their cars right in front of the cottage.

Having been on the road for a good six hours, I couldn't hide my disappointment of not having a clear shot, free of people and cars so I wandered across to the group of people to have a friendly Mancunian word. I politely asked how long they were staying and if their cars would be parked up the whole time. It turns out they were there for the weekend, but were also curious as to why I was asking. Explaining my wish to get a photo, the friendly group not only moved their gear and cars but also took some shots themselves and invited us in to have a look around the cottage. Turns out they were all members of the LSCC who administer bookings for the cottage. We spent a good half hour talking to them all and learnt a few things about the area.

I know this is just another cliché shot of this familiar landmark, but I can't speak highly enough of the people there for going out of their way to make this shot happen for me. In hindsight, turned out to be one of the best days of the holiday and it was only the start!

I think I might have misjudged Foma Retropan 320. I wanted to develop a roll yesterday and couldn't find any straight info on what the time for Rodinal 1+50 would be, one person says 11 min, another - 17 min. Official Foma spreadsheet doesn't recommend Rodinal for this film, probably because they advertise it as "fine grain". All results from this film I found through my online research were everything but fine grain. Anyway, I had no other choice but to throw the film in the usual 1+100 dilution and give it an hour to develop. It came out a bit foggy, the base is greyish, instead of clear and transparent. The real surprise came this morning, after scanning it with a my old dying Canon. The dark tones are to my liking, the black is rich and the grain is indeed retro. Only downside I find is the softness, but then again it's called Retropan 320 soft. It's probably not a good choice for portraits, although I gonna give that a try out of curiosity.

So very glad of the plant label!

My plan for the day was to teach four staff basic EXCEL. One of the staff was then going to develop a spreadsheet that she would be using daily. For a variety of reasons, three of the staff were unable to make it. The one who I would still be going through this with is also a friend who has frequently met 'Kath'. I phoned her up first thing and told her there was a change of plan "my P.A. will be teaching you EXCEL". So this is how I looked while we were working together on her spreadsheet.

There is something a bit strange but pleasant about sitting comfortably while taking bee-on-flower macros. I am used to lying on the ground or being in uncomfortable stances trying to reach the shot.

A Quick Trip to see the Hudswell Clarke Event at the Aln Valley Railway near Alnwick to see 2 Hudswell Clarke Locos working.

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

Here the S. Fox and co no 20 - "Jennifer" is ready to haul the first train of the day but as it isn't a double header I have changed my ticket to be on the 2nd train and so will video this one departing from Lionheart Station.

A Photo from Day 6 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record but unfortunately I don't get any journeys on this day.

The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) runs trains along a 16 mile Heritage line from Kidderminster station to Bridgenorth station .Highly is one of the stations along the line and there is The Engine House Museum there.

The day I went during the sort of main summer holidays, there were 4 steam Locomotive running on various Steam Excursions where due to Covid19, Compartments were being sold to families and there were some tables for groups of 2 or 4 people but nothing really suitable for the solo traveler.

Here, near Highley Station, I got my last photo of this visit to the Severn Valley Railway which was of 1501 as it was approaching the Station.

1501 is a Hawksworth designed GWR "15xx Class" 0-6-0PT loco which was built at Swindon Works.

Here, 403 - "Victor" is hauling the train I am on into the Percy Main station and passing 401 - "Vulcan" on the run round loop and about to form a Double Header for the journey back up the line.

37259 - Broxbourne Junction Signalbox - morning - 10/12/79 (According to my notes [now digital on a spreadsheet] this was a ???? MO Special [now VSTP] from Stansted Mountfitchet Down Siding to Ripple Lane West Yd, which consisted of a short rake [about 10 TTAs] of discharged oil tanks, that had conveyed kerosene for Stansted Airport, before it's expansion & replacement by a pipeline).

The large yard to the right of the locomotive belonged to the CEGB Power Station at Rye House, which by 1989 had stopped receiving coal by rail & only occassionly received oil from the BP refinery at Thames Haven (I only ever signalled one & probably the last one into the site).

I bet there will be large galleries for the "Peak" on Saturday, although for me it will look far too clean, compared with those that were semi-regular on West Anglia in the 80's!!

We were small. We were tired. We were tired. We were happy.
