A Photo from Day 2 of a "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

At Didcot Railway Centre, their "Diamond Jubilee Gala" had 4 steam locomotives with 2 each on the "Main Demonstration Line" and the shorter "Branch Line." 2 diesels powered some early morning and evening trains.

Several Steam Locomotives were also on Static Display and it was possible to go round the sheds.

Here, Works no. 4263, Kitson built No. 29 - The Lambton, Hetton and Joicey 0-6-2T Loco on loan from NYMR is at the branch Line and about to go to collect the carriages.

Photographed on "Yorkshire Day" (August 1st) and LH&JC no 29 is displaying a board showing that.

I've been trying to get a picture of a bee on this for ages. So often the ones I am familiar with have flowers that are a bit too high. These ones in Dundee were all at head height or lower. Made for an enjoyable 10 minutes with the camera! Such a beautiful heady scent too - i hadnt realised that before!

Orange pollen load on view.

Will go on spreadsheet!

Another Double Railway Day and I decided to go to the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) in the morning and I can move onto the Mid Norfolk Railway (MNR) in the afternoon. It is only about 50 minutes by car between the 2 railways.

When I arrived at Sheringham Station on the North Norfolk Railway (NNR), there were 2 Steam Trains operating along the line.

Here, after travelling along the line from Weybourne to Holt Station, this Photo is of 90775 - recently named "The Royal Norfolk Regiment" which was built by North British of Glasgow as a WD/10 Class loco similar to a 9F - 2-10-0 just before the run round at Holt.

A ND calculation table I knocked up on a spreadsheet. Shutter speeds are in 1/3rd stop increments from 1000th sec. The table covers ND4, ND8, ND106 and ND110 or 2, 3, 6 and 10 stops respectively.

Please feel free to download/print out/use if it is of interest/use. The iPhone app really is great, but for anyone like me who is concerned that whilst using their iPhone around water with cold hands in low light and that they (like me) are too clumsy to use this app, then this spreadsheet is a cheaper option. :)

Any feedback appreciated. If you cant download a high enough quality to allow printing, email me and I will send a pdf copy through - Sorry got images set to Friends and Family only at the moment.

UPDATE

Alternatively visit my website www.pswheeler.com to download a copy from the 'Downloads' section. The only thing I ask in return are that you join my group Black & White Long Exposures www.flickr.com/groups/bwlongexposures/ (If appropriate to your photography) Please feel free to contact me - Any feedback will be gratefully received.

Thanks for viewing and thank you to everyone for the really kind feedback to date - July 2012

I have put an easy to search spreadsheet of the whole set of honey bees on named flowers here:

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-_uJANb_oKgIZLEvm0mFjYq3W...

I need to work on making the URLs in the spreadsheet clickable. I will arrange a consultation with one of my kids I think. I hope they will be slightly impressed that I got this far with the shareable google docs spreadsheet all by myself! - got this sorted i think - by making each photo URL a separate row in excel rather trhan bunching them together in one cell. Seems to work now. No consutaltion with kids required!

Thanks to Plantaholic Sheila for the identification of the plant.

An impressive shrub/small tree in full flower in Mount Stewart at present.

I could see that quite a few bees were working these flowers but not entering the tubes but instead feeding through the side of the flower, On closer inspection it was easy to see that there were holes in the side of the tubes of almost every flower, presumably made by other insects. The honey bees were taking advantage of these as a way of getting to nectar that they would not otherwise have had access to. "nectar robbing"

Enjoy. Why not? Of course you will. I know, you know it.

Only large, human, randomized placebo-controlled trials in our data scrape – wherever possible. No animal trials. No cell studies.

We looked at the abstracts of over 1500 studies on PubMed (run by US National Library Of Medicine) and Cochrane.org (which hosts meta-studies of scientific research). It took us several months to seek out the evidence – or lack of.

You know that feeling when you've created a spreadsheet, then spent hours entering data from a paper copy? Then, after a few hours, you think "that's not right". So you investigate, and find out that you haven't been given all the sheets? So now, you need to go through every month, checking if there is missing data?

And you lose the will to live?

That.

I needed a break from the computer. I had a cream cake for afternoon tea break, but needed to wash up first.

I've got another task now, so tomorrow will be yet more data entry. Oh, and there is no elegant way to eat a chocolate eclair!

A Photo from Day 1 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

Here, at Shildon's Locomotion Museum, there was a static display of 60103 - "Flying Scotsman" which was the first locomotive recorded as having reached 100 m.p.h. for part of its journey on 30 November 1934 breaking the world speed record at the time.

Nigel Gresley designed 4472 later numbered 60103 was originally an A1 Pacific 4-6-2 was one of the first to have a Corridor tender which enabled a crew change on long journeys and this enabled it and similar Locomotives to run non-stop between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley Stations, a distance of about 390 miles.

Later in 1947, with a larger boiler added Flying Scotsman was reclassified as an A3 Locomotive.

"Flying Scotsman" was recorded as having travelled over 2 million miles in service of LNER and later BR.

The locomotive also went to the USA and Canada and toured between 1969 and 1971.

Here's the last of my rescaled cargo wagons. The base was extended by 7 studs from 54 to 61 studs when compared to my previous design (www.flickr.com/photos/152818020@N02/44314636911/in/datepo...). The overall hight was decreased by half a plate to align the buffers with the base. I also increased the width of each plate between the ribs from two studs to three studs. Each rib with also widened from one vertical plate to two. The number of plates with ribs decreased from 22 to 16 per side, which is closer to the 18 on the real wagon. Another goal of this redesign, was to decrease the overall mass of the wagon. I'm probably going to set up an excel spreadsheet to obtain the total mass of the wagon from the index of parts and the mass of each part obtained from brick link. I will post a link to the spreadsheet as soon as I complete it.

A Day Trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway for the Saturday of a 3 day Steam Gala,

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

There were 2 Visiting Engines and some of 5 of the Home Fleet Locomotives scheduled to run on an intensive timetable.

Here, on my first Steam Heritage Railway Visit of 2022, just outside Keighley Station is Taff Vale no 85, a Riches designed and Kitson built Class 02 - 0-6-2T locomotive.

I think by the amount of Smoke and Steam Taff Vale 85 is banking a Shuttle service to Ingrow West ready to lead the train back down to Keighley without the need for a run-round at Ingrow West. On the right hand side of the photo there is smoke and steam from the leading loco which is almost certainly Ivatt No 41241.

This week-end involved 2 Heritage Railways with the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

Here, after arriving at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway (EVR) and going on a journey behind Steam Locomotive "Henry Ellison" from Wirksworth Station on a train up the very steep 1 in 27 Ravenstor Incline, I went along the line to Duffield Station.

Here loco 80080, a Riddles designed, Brighton Works built 2-6-4T is at Duffield Station in the Head Shunt during the Run Round.

***************

This set of photos is based on a very simple concept: walk every block of Manhattan with a camera, and see what happens. To avoid missing anything, walk both sides of the street.

That's all there is to it …

Of course, if you wanted to be more ambitious, you could also walk the streets of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. But that's more than I'm willing to commit to at this point, and I'll leave the remaining boroughs of New York City to other, more adventurous photographers.

Oh, actually, there's one more small detail: leave the photos alone for a month -- unedited, untouched, and unviewed. By the time I actually focus on the first of these "every-block" photos, I will have taken more than 8,000 images on the nearby streets of the Upper West Side -- plus another several thousand in Rome, Coney Island, and the various spots in NYC where I traditionally take photos. So I don't expect to be emotionally attached to any of the "every-block" photos, and hope that I'll be able to make an objective selection of the ones worth looking at.

As for the criteria that I've used to select the small subset of every-block photos that get uploaded to Flickr: there are three. First, I'll upload any photo that I think is "great," and where I hope the reaction of my Flickr-friends will be, "I have no idea when or where that photo was taken, but it's really a terrific picture!"

A second criterion has to do with place, and the third involves time. I'm hoping that I'll take some photos that clearly say, "This is New York!" to anyone who looks at it. Obviously, certain landscape icons like the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty would satisfy that criterion; but I'm hoping that I'll find other, more unexpected examples. I hope that I'll be able to take some shots that will make a "local" viewer say, "Well, even if that's not recognizable to someone from another part of the country, or another part of the world, I know that that's New York!" And there might be some photos where a "non-local" viewer might say, "I had no idea that there was anyplace in New York City that was so interesting/beautiful/ugly/spectacular."

As for the sense of time: I remember wandering around my neighborhood in 2005, photographing various shops, stores, restaurants, and business establishments -- and then casually looking at the photos about five years later, and being stunned by how much had changed. Little by little, store by store, day by day, things change … and when you've been around as long as I have, it's even more amazing to go back and look at the photos you took thirty or forty years ago, and ask yourself, "Was it really like that back then? Seriously, did people really wear bell-bottom jeans?"

So, with the expectation that I'll be looking at these every-block photos five or ten years from now (and maybe you will be, too), I'm going to be doing my best to capture scenes that convey the sense that they were taken in the year 2013 … or at least sometime in the decade of the 2010's (I have no idea what we're calling this decade yet). Or maybe they'll just say to us, "This is what it was like a dozen years after 9-11".

Movie posters are a trivial example of such a time-specific image; I've already taken a bunch, and I don't know if I'll ultimately decide that they're worth uploading. Women's fashion/styles are another obvious example of a time-specific phenomenon; and even though I'm definitely not a fashion expert, I suspected that I'll be able to look at some images ten years from now and mutter to myself, "Did we really wear shirts like that? Did women really wear those weird skirts that are short in the front, and long in the back? Did everyone in New York have a tattoo?"

Another example: I'm fascinated by the interactions that people have with their cellphones out on the street. It seems that everyone has one, which certainly wasn't true a decade ago; and it seems that everyone walks down the street with their eyes and their entire conscious attention riveted on this little box-like gadget, utterly oblivious about anything else that might be going on (among other things, that makes it very easy for me to photograph them without their even noticing, particularly if they've also got earphones so they can listen to music or carry on a phone conversation). But I can't help wondering whether this kind of social behavior will seem bizarre a decade from now … especially if our cellphones have become so miniaturized that they're incorporated into the glasses we wear, or implanted directly into our eyeballs.

If you have any suggestions about places that I should definitely visit to get some good photos, or if you'd like me to photograph you in your little corner of New York City, please let me know. You can send me a Flickr-mail message, or you can email me directly at ed-at-yourdon-dot-com

Stay tuned as the photo-walk continues, block by block ...

A Quick Trip to see the Victor and Vulcan together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum - I was lucky to get a lift to the museum while a friend had an abortive shopping trip (long queues) to a shopping outlet.

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

403 - "Victor" was Visiting from the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and meeting up with 401 - "Vulcan", a Home Locomotive built by the same factory for the .Victor and Vulcan together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum.

Here, 403 - "Victor" has just run round and is about to haul the train I catch to the Percy Main end of the approximately 2 mile long line.

Other than the recent support on Twitter, Yahoo’s top executives have barely mentioned Flickr publicly for some time. Few top executives actually have a public Flickr account.

No one questions Flickr’s appeal to photographers who post, admire and comment on a wealth of artistic images, many of which are magazine quality. Where Flickr is faltering is with people who want to store and share more mundane snapshots.

I don't understand why Flickr tech group hasn't introduced human computation concepts to its tagging strategy. Name comes to mind and starts with a "C" and ends with a "APCHA" and how Google used this to tag images in search. No offence, but images are binary data and you are trying to apply computation learning - which is nowhere near accurate, despite any AI models. Anyway, combination of human computational game theory into image identification and using our mushy brains for something that silicon cannot in the same fashion. Cognitive learning, man. You are so behind the learning curve.

Preserve Flickr/SmugMug for ever....

www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157720519776877/

When Flickr was acquired by SmugMug in 2018, it was a mission of preservation: our tens of billions of photos, hundreds of millions of photographers, and millions of thriving communities were coming dangerously close to not existing online, and that was unacceptable. So we joined forces with SmugMug, and we’re all the stronger for it.

Today we’re announcing some upcoming changes to our Terms of Service that will help us continue to preserve the art, expression, history, stories, and memories of all Flickr members for the next hundred years. These changes fall into two distinct buckets, and will affect Flickr free members. The first change relates to restricted and moderate content. (You might call it NSFW, or explicit, or other terms, but we’ve gone ahead and defined them for Flickr here... www.flickr.org/
