BOOM!
I'm pretty proud of this one, I must say.
I borrowed my gorgeous friend Jasa and took a trip down to my favorite bus station after dark tp test out my new softbox and umbrella, and just go nuts with absolutely everything I own (minus the reflector). I played with all sorts of combinations of lighting, and I love that this place was already well-lit so I just got to be creative. None of the bus passengers bothered us, the security people seemed down, and even though my gear was scattered EVERYWHERE, there was no problem with random passerby's.
This was actually the end of this part of the shoot, and I aaaalmost wanted to shoot Jasa here, but I decided to just move on because I didn't think I'd have enough space to work any magic here (the camera is RIGHT up against another wall behind it. That's when I remembered I wanted to take an awesome self portrait here. So I went for it, and I LOVE it! Despite my painfully soft low-shutter-speed focus :/
I can't WAIT to edit more photos!

Example of short lighting.
Did a one-to-one lighting workshop last Sunday and this was the only image I shot, just to show the client what short lighting does to the face.

I had some free time tonight so thought I would get some practice with flash. I used 2 x 600Ex-RT Speedlites and Neewer softbox.
I was inspired by one of Nick Wheeler's beer shot. So I tried the same setup.
After I got the Strobist shot done, I was thinking I could add a little Spunk to this.
I put my camera on the tripod and set my shutter at 30sec, turned off all the lights, then after the flash fired and exposed the bottle, I used my iPhone to light paint the background, then whoalah!

#228/365 I was attemping to do a portrait that looked along the lines of a movie still. I actually took more shot about 10 feet away but at the end decided to have her stand in front of our bushes for a couple of shots and ended up going with it. I had a hard time titling this and I thought "Waiting in the Dark" sounded better than "Waiting in the Yard". I't like to thank my wife for putting on a thick coat in the middle of summer.

(Single B800 thru large softbox, high - camera right)
got the VII in, wife got kids ready and we took them to shoot but the VII inverter died within a couple dozen shots. (PCB had another one on the way the same day I called them about it - awesome CS!)
I didn't get the image I wanted in the 10 minutes of shooting in which the VII was working but this gave me some ideas. I wanted to use her head to block a little more of the sun and I wish my boy would've been looking at something other than a passing truck but he's 2 so what do you expect? unfortunately, the flowers are now wilting/wilted so maybe next year.

My last girl of the day for my Easter minis. She's a doll, so sweet and soft spoken but did whatever we wanted. Except smile :p But we did steal a few! This was the second time I've worked with her!

The new geared head I acquired in January 2025 to replace my trusty Benro, which isn’t getting any younger, and will now be retired to live on the humongous Manfrotto tripod I use only in the studio, with only very rare outings.
The Innorel leveling base will also go on the Manfrotto tripod.
This K&F Concept head received excellent reviews everywhere I looked.
This is the last photo I took with my Phottix studio strobes. They served me well for many years, and are now on sale as I have just moved to Godox strobes.
Strobist and technical: One Phottix Pro Indra500 monolight on a Profoto light stand in Rembrandt position to camera left, 1.5 meters from subject and 1 meter above it, firing at 1/16 ¼ power through a Phottix Pro 110–cm Luna octabox with double diffuser and an additional Lastolite scrim; and another Indra500 studio strobe on a Profoto light stand in lateral position to camera right, 1.5 meters from subject and about 0.5 meter above it, firing at 1/16 power through a Phottix Pro 150–cm Raja softbox with double diffuser. Glossy white background.
Strobes set and triggered via Phottix Pro Odin II radio controller on the Nikon Z7’s hot shoe, manual mode. Sekonic L–858D light meter used to balance light sources. Manfrotto 161 MK2B geared tripod with Neewer horizontal arm and K&F Concept ball head. Nikon Z7 II camera, Micro-Nikkor Z MC 105mm, ƒ/2.8 macro S lens.
Composite shot made up of 15 focus-stacked exposures, set automatically using the built-in function on the camera. Stack processed with Helicon Focus software.
Damn kids got into the milk again.
24x24" softbox on subject left, 24x36" softbox subject right; Yongnuo trigger. Shot in two frames (one for each youngin) and composited, simply because I only have two hands. Used a third shot without subjects to mask my hands out (supporting their necks).
