Still playing around with my DIY flashes and learning along the way.

One thing I realised is that although umbrella diffusers are handy the damn things show up in any reflective surface. So I constructed myself a diffuser screen to act as a kind of softbox, (white cotton sheeting stapled across a large picture frame). Works pretty well.

Here I just played around with the idea of the original problem of the umbrella reflection and pinned a black cardboard cutout of an umbrella shape on the diffuser screen.

I quite like it :-)

Water droplets placed by hand with a syringe, (I know, maddening!), on a black instrument panel.

DOF is not expansive but at f14 it's not bad, (handy having 4/3rds!)

Christmas Tree - Manual Focus: Trying out various focal lengths and lighting ideas to play with balancing Christmas tree lights. This one was using the long zoom, 70-200 Tamron f2.8, with a Godox V1 above in 80x80mm softbox.

Take one aluninium tray. The type you use for BBQ. Cut a rectangular hole for a cardboard holder for the flash. Cover the tray with white trash bag. And Presto! A $100 softbox made for under $1. The range isn't great cause the light bounces to the top and then back down and out, but for portraits, it works a treat. You can suffer from a slight blue tinge in your photos due to the colour of the tray but you can adjust for that in Photoshop or on camera white balance.

===============================

A cool expense this week; I have now a nice Lastolite Ezybox Hot Shoe Kit 60cm x 60cm (24' x 24') softbox to use with my Nikon Flashes (SB-900 and SB-600).

I purchased it to give another dimension to some of the portraits I will be doing this winter.

The picture above was meant to be a test. When I saw its simplicity and the beautiful eyes of my daughter Val, I thought I had no choice but to publish it.

LORD V; on flickr is a master Macro Photographer. He has inspired me to try my hand at this refraction style of shooting. I still have a ways to get to his level of expertise, but I am pleasantly happy with the results of my first attempt.

Enjoy and remember to comment and critique.

Experimenting with a soft box that I got for a recent birthday present. Good indoor fun to experiment with flash.

For Flickr Friday's 'I'm Only Human' theme. Kind of a departure for me. I don't usually do this sort of heavy duty compositing and it shows a bit. On the plus side it was also my first go with a homemade softbox (photography.tutsplus.com/tutorials/diy-how-to-make-a-prof...), which I was pretty happy with, though I ended up shooting the flash into it like an umbrella for the best effect.

Shot this with one softbox to camera right.

This is the first team effort between myself and my wife. It takes quite a while for us to be happy with the placement of the plate because of our limited prop in our kitchen. The orange peels on the back and on the top of the mousse are quite fiddly to arrange - I just found out that my hand is much shakier than my wife's!

We also spent at least 10 minutes to be happy with the napkin at the top right - which is great because I wouldn't have the patience and the attention to the detail myself.
