Just a study in green, red and yellow, really. I was preparing a little salad to go with my favourite genuine Arbroath Smokies.
I'm always amazed at how perfectly thin and transparent veggies are once the mandolin is through with them. Unfortunately I cut my finger pretty badly with it the day I made this salad. I should've been more careful. The mandolin is such a great tool. I use it for all sorts of makeshift grating and zesting as well as slicing.
I love wine corks. Get mad when they are made of rubber (or worse screw on caps). I hope this collection says I am a lover of beautiful and lovely tasting things, not I drink too much wine.

If you ever find yourself in the South Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, do stop in to Luigi's for a slice. The place has been here since the early 1970s...obviously. It's on Fifth Avenue, between 20th and 21st streets, within a stone's throw of Green-Wood Cemetery and also conveniently close to my home. It looks like thousands of other pizza places in New York, perhaps a bit more charmingly unsleek, but the pizza is completely outstanding.
New Yorkers LOVE arguing about which place has the best pizza. Or, more specifically, the most AUTHENTIC pizza. Discussing pizza authenticity is a tautology. Even in Italy, pizza varies drastically from region to region. And comparing an artisanal pie from a wood-fired oven to a giant floppy slice from Luigi's oven is silly. They are both delicious! Why would you deprive yourself of either one? Luigi's is of the old-school New York variety, but has the best and most delicious crust imaginable. Apparently they also use a lot of home-grown herbs in their sauces, and it shows. This place is comforting, 100% delicious and I'm really happy that it has, so far, survived gentrification. And for the slaves to rankings, yes, this unassuming slice joint is regularly voted the best in the city.

A quickie slice bead cutter until I figure out a flexible variable length slice / tube bead cutter. Thing-a-day 18.
Hiking season also means jerky season around here, our 11 year old’s must-have trail snack. We are fortunate to be able to have access to some really beautiful beef- raised ethically and grass fed, on a family farm nearby. Jerky is incredibly simple to prepare- begin to thaw a roast, and slice to your liking while still quite cold or semi frozen (makes cutting it thin significantly easier), add your favourite marinade, leave overnight or longer to marinate, then spread thinly on dehydrator sheets, dry at 165f- Test often as it’s done faster than you think (it takes four hours for a full load on my 9 tray Excalibur). Marinade was a bit of a Korean Bulgogi but with a tweak, gochujang, a shredded apple, fresh ginger, garlic, Worcershire sauce, a smoked plum butter, coconut sugar, sea salt. She always devours jerky way before we get to the top of a mountain #beefjerky #grassfedbeef #consciousnutrition #nourishingtraditions #nourish #protein #familieswhohike #regenerativeagriculture #jerky

A slice of lemon on a slice of orange. I particularly enjoy the way the segments radiate from the lemon into the orage.
