Shadow of Burnside Bridge on Willamette River, from Eastbank Esplanade

As my mother, daughter and son were watching the hot air balloons taking off at the Newbury Show I noticed their shadows on the marquee next to them!

Autumn Day

Lord: it is time. The huge summer has gone by.

Now overlap the sundials with your shadows,

and on the meadows let the wind go free.

Command the fruits to swell on tree and vine;

grant them a few more warm transparent days,

urge them on to fulfillment then, and press

the final sweetness into the heavy wine.

Whoever has no house now, will never have one.

Whoever is alone will stay alone,

will sit, read, write long letters through the evening,

and wander the boulevards, up and down,

restlessly, while the dry leaves are blowing.

This was my entry for DoA's photostory contest. The theme this year was Me and My Shadow and my story won 2nd place!

I figured since the contest is over and I can finally post my pictures in other places, that I'd share them here.

shadow is always black or blue

The shadow is of a Winter Flowering Jasmine - it has already been in bloom for 3 weeks!

I love the shadows from the trees on the walls on Ballard Ave in Seattle. Shooting with a variety of cameras.

This is from a roll of firsts:

This is a quick and dirty scan but loving the contrast.

Taken in my backyard. They are definately bigger this year.

Cover artist unknown. Contains "Murder on Approval" (1938), starring Orson Welles and Agnes Moorehead; and "The Giant of Madras" (1948), starring Bret Morrison and Grace Matthews.

So fortuitous that I just got a pedicure yesterday. How do you like my hair style after finishing my pool time today? The water was freezing for the first three minutes and then perfect. I really hate for it to close. It has been a wonderful summer.

Misty moving fog and light creating shadows

He follows me everywhere I go. Most days I don't notice him, but when I am shooting with a fisheye lens he always tries to get in the way.

Capturing the ghostly figures in time of the people of Guisborough.

Mark ‘Spoonman’ Petrakis and I are developing a shadow puppet show we call ‘Ubu’s Dreams’.

This short series of sketches stars Père Ubu, the hero of french poet Alfred Jarry’s surreal plays. In this show, Ubu is constantly dreaming, playing with archetypal characters from our collective unconscious.

For this project, we are creating a variety of wooden figures with a laser cutter: big faces, music notes, dancers, trees and graveyards, to name but a few. We then tape our puppets on wooden sticks, and wave them across the stage to bring them to life, with a projector over our heads.

We plan to continue this experiment through the summer and perform a first puppet show during our Dada exhibit at the Canessa Gallery in North Beach, from Nov. 3 to 12, 2016.

I also plan to use some of these techniques with our lower and middle school students, for the Maker Art courses I will be teaching this fall.

From shadow puppets to poetic robots, these interactive storytelling experiments have the potential to engage us at a deeper level and help us learn more about ourselves.

Another long shadow…

I was sitting at my computer at work and I happened to look up and I saw Rudy's shadow on the wall in front me. He's looking out the window from his cat tree

There was light from the stairs above. I took the chance to take this shot of my friend's shadow.

Lighting Essentials Workshop.

Shot in full sun, which was giving f/16 @ 1/200 (the f/16 rule). The speedlights were set to give an exposure of f/22 to overpower the sun and I synch'd at 1/160 with Cactus triggers. Three lights: one in front of the model, illuminating her face, one to camera left and one to camera right.

Photoshop: I opened this image in ACR and "yikes!" all the shadows were clipped to black. So I set about bringing up the exposure...then it dawned on me: we deliberately set this shot up to drop out the background. So I left the exposure alone and let the background fall out. Contrast adjustment with curves, some skin smoothing and blemish removal. Light sharpening.
