Setup for some of shots in this set

Setup for the recent chocolate shots. See notes.

Canon 430EX on 1/8 power camera left. Sunpack 383 on 1/8 power camera right. White foam-core to make a nice reflective box. Later shots also used a Wescott Apollo softbox in front of the candy and to the left of the photographer. Everything fired with Gadget Infinity 16-channel triggers.

27" iMac

Logitech z-5500 Speakers

I've been using the 10' EMT pole for a little while but it was never reached far enough to where I wanted. So I ordered a custom aluminum pole setup which sat unused for almost two years. Finally was able to buy the misc. screws, bolts, tension wire, etc. as I already have the grip equipment (cups, arms, clamps, etc.).

Total length of the pole is 16' in four sections with sleeves. And of course an adjustable tension wire. Overall it's a somewhat heavy setup but the flex and bounce is significantly less compared to the EMT pole. Haven't done as many rig shots when I shoot cars because it takes time to setup and edit compared to standard stills or rolling shots (car to car). That may change this year but we'll see.

You can check out more rig shots I've done here.

This is my light setup for the SBs I used in the darkfield wineglass shot. The SBs are attached to my DIY worklights. The worklights themselves were not used in the wineglass shot.

ironically, did a studio shoot without any studio lights..

2 430EXIIs at 1/4th power to blow the background, 580EXII at 1/8th power into a softbox below and 580EXII at 1/4th power bounced off the ceiling on cam as master and main light..

for rest of the set click here..

The setup I used to shoot "drowning my sorrows". See the notes for the details.

In this piggyback setup, the DSLR sits atop a special bracket on the optical tube. The Canon T1i is at maximum focal length of its 70-300mm lens. The telescope's optical tube is closed and imaging is done with the DSLR, while the telescope tracks the sky, thus allowing long exposures.

-

my setup for a day at home: my work-laptop (necessity 'cauese my work run Windows-only apps ) , my loyal Powerbook , my iPod, my phone and my Microtrack HD-recorder. Then spot the bananas (i'm in close family with monkeys here ! ) and my espresso . That's a nice setup.

It's always amazing to me how much different a setup shot looks on the same camera setting with the camera pointed at a different angle.

One thing we are learning very quickly, there is no substitute for a big honkin' diffused light source (even our panel's not big enough) and LOTS of light when shooting cars.

Special thanks to John K. and Dennis S. in setting up this shoot, as well as the owner of Pro-Max for lending us the cars to model. If you are interested in purchasing this vehicle, please visit www.pro-max.com

Strobist:

AB1600 and AB400 1/1 into diffusion panel held high, lighting the side.

One thing worth pointing out here is that we goboed the AB400 and AB1600. In bare tube mode the spill is lighting the roof structs which then gets reflected in the glass. We took my craftsman tool catalog, tore pages out of it and then electrical taped it over the top of the strobes to act as a gobo. :-)

Snooted SB600 for accent lighting on the wheels. Note that it doesn't work as well here as body panels cover half the wheel and that gets lit up unnaturally bright on the rear.

2 generic AC strobes in soft boxes cross lighting the front.

580EX M1/8, diffuser down, driver seat, firing into roof.

430EX M1/4, diffuser down, passenger seat, firing into roof.

The interior of the car is creme colored leather and at M1/1 the insides look like an alien abduction is going on..

.

Lighting setup from one of our recent weddings. The church has a crazy dark ceiling that just sucks the light like a black hole. These Saber Strips helped us get the lighting we needed for the shots to come out properly, without blocking up anyone's view or otherwise uglying up the scene.

The Saber Strips can be found here: www.saberstrip.com

our setup for recording the Duquesne University Opera at the Carnegie Music Hall in Homestead

I have only one outlet in my garage and it's located on an inside wall right next to my electrical panel. Plugging the EVSE in at that location would have been fine for those times when the car is in the garage. The charge cord simply would not reach for those times when the car is outside.

The solution was to run an extension cord out near the door. I decided to use a 25 foot 12 gauge cord and mount the EVSE out near the door. Frankly, I needed a cord out there to power the wall hung vacuum cleaner.

From this location, the charge cord easily reaches the car in or out of the garage and doesn't interfere with door closure.

Someday I would like to install permanent 220v and 115v outlets in this area.

The stock EVSE takes about 12 hours to recharge a depleted battery. This is typically not a problem when charging overnight. A 220v charger only takes 4-1/2 hours which could be handy from time to time.

EVSE = Electric Vehicle Service Equipment.

We often refer to these as “chargers” but in reality they are simply a connection between an electrical power source, the cars builtin charger, and the cars computer which regulates how much is needed to recharge the battery.

once in a while i have a crazy setup to get a pic and i just like to share how i did it.
