There are expected minor imperfections, mostly on the insides along common sweat stain areas or a few possible sunburn spots. I believe they're all mainly silk though, and they're very well-made.

The obi is a premade-type, so I don't have to learn how to tie it! Thank god, otherwise I'd never wear these.

It's too nice just to use as a toilet bag so I use it as an evening bag.

My maternal grandfather had this as a younger man. My parents have just downsized and this was passed onto me just recently.

A little internet trawling tells me that A Franks Ltd closed in 1897, so presumably it was his father's before him or secondhand as my grandfather was born in 1908. My Grandfather's family (Charlesworths) were from the Manchester / Glossop region. In fact, I was baptised in Charlesworth Chapel, Charlesworth, nr Glossop.

The microscope isn't in great shape: the optics are cloudy and dirty; the mirror is tarnished and the focussing screw has sheared off. It is a fairly basic model, a kind of student edition.

The 10 slides are from a two sources - most from T Gerrard & Co of London and others from Flatters & Garnett of Manchester, both companies that specialised in this kind of thing. Flatters & Garnett were active from 1901 onward, which dates the slide collection.

The slides are in reasonable nick and quite varied from rat testis, ovary, ascaris (tapeworm) and coccidium (a parasite) in rabbit liver.

Using the microscope brought back unpleasant memories of first year medical student histology classes, staring forlornly at unrecognisable pink and purple blobs down a microscope.

Anyhoo, I must admit that I'm tempted to just ditch the whole caboodle. Decluttering and all that stuff. However, as a committed horder, I think I hold onto a bit longer just yet.

A laurel made from secondhand sheets and lace.

Here in Benin, old lace tablecloth/curtains are used everywhere: hairnets, coverings for food so flies don’t come in, privacy curtains at doors and windows, and more.

What I enjoy more is buying the lace. In the US, we throw out things that are in perfectly good condition, but where do they actually go? One answer is Africa, where our unwanted stuff is resold in piles on the streets here. It’s fun to “thrift” for the fabric here and then make something out of materials originally destined for the trash.

I bought a lace sheet and a curtain sheet to line it with, however since the lace was already heavy this dress is very thick and more suited for winter. I finished the edges with bias tape facing & added pockets because they’re just too useful to leave out.

I wrote more in my sewing journal here: cathywu.com/journal/treadling/2013/04/14/secondhand-lace-...

Second-hand book market in Lille placed in the middle of the old bourse (exchange)

We got her out of the jumble of toys in the cardboard box, with her hair all tangled, wearing only a pair of oversized hoop earrings. V. gave her a nice bath and put her in one of the dresses Grandma made, and we're going to try to help her get an office job.

Yesterday evening we went to our favourite seconhand store, so much to see and to want!! Ifound some nice hankies to screenprint.

BP2bi Hand Engraved Thistle Bass Drone Cap

Bought recently in Seattle, when I just happened upon a place in Ballard that was selling off a bunch of vintage fabrics from the collection of a woman who was a dressmaker for musicians in the 60's and 70's. Oh, how I wish I'd picked up some more of the other prints and woolens!!!

This a smallish piece of soft cotton from the local thrift store. Rarely do I see stuff like this there.

Medium weight cotton napkins. There are four of them, probably never used.
