Wentworth

plywood

250 pieces

250 x 360 mm

A rare charity shop find - an older Wentworth puzzle from the time when they were actually Finnish birch plywood, rather than the modern medite version.

Not a subject I would have chosen due to the unclear image, but at just a few pounds I figured it was worth buying.

Some nice whimsies, including a multi-piece tree.

Complete.

Former Southern Vectis TDL 420S is here with Caroline Seagull in Gt Yarmouth, taken in Aug 89, its seen with a Midland Fox picking up on the lay by after a day trip. TDL 420S was one of a small batch of Bedfords with Dominant coachwork purchased by NBC in the late 70's.

Even after many years of collecting ephemera there is still the joy of a remarkable find whilst browsing through a shop; even allowing for the rapidly dwindling number of secondhand bookshops even antique centres can still turn up the odd item. So, I was very surprised to see this brochure in a pile of 'ephemera'.

Shell-Mex and BP Ltd, the petrol and oil marketing concern, were well known in the 1930s for the quality of their publicity and advertising. The unavowedly modernist approach was due to the company's advertising manager, Jack Beddington. This brochure is typical of the approach. Written by Arthur Elton, who authored several technical books and publications for Shell, it looks at the technology behind the "Self Changing or pre-Selective Epicyclic" gearbox and transmission system that had started to be fitted to a number of models of both motor cars and commercial vehicles. The most common type was that known as the "Wilson" after its designer Walter Wilson who in 1928, with backing from John Siddeley of Arnstron Siddeley, set up Improved Gears Ltd. later known as Self-Changing Gears Ltd. In time SCG became a Leyland subsidiary and variations on the transmission and control systems were fitted to a wide range of buses and post-war British Railways diesel-multiple units.

This brochure looks at the technology behind such a gear/gearbox and describes its operation along with various illustrations and diagrams. Spirally bound, the booklet, printed by the Bradford based Lund, Humphries & Co. Ltd., is distinguished by the quality of its layout, typography and graphic design, these being remarkable examples of the contemporary movement of modernist design. It was designed and illustrated by Zéró - Hans Schleger, the noted German-Polish typographer and designer who had settled in the UK in 1932 and became one of the most celebrated artists in his field. It uses the 'Lubrication" figure that was designed for Shell-Mex and BP by Edward McKnight Kauffer, the American born designer and artist who first came to prominance following early commissions for his work from Frank Pick of London Underground in the immediate post-WW1 year years.

The photographs used are from Maurice Beck, the famous photographer whose work varied from Vogue magazine to montage style posters for London Transport, along with stills from the G.P.O. Film Unit, one of the pioneering and most highly regarded of early documentary film producers that had been set up in 1933 under John Grierson.

All in all the whole brochure is a compendium of modernist British graphic design, typography and designers. Although undated it is mentioned in the 1935/36 edition of Modern Publicity and both the V&A and Birmingham University Libraries give 1934 as a credible date for publication.

One of those funny old baskets made with paper pictures, covered with plastic and woven together at the sides with plastic cord. What are they called? What era are they from? Anyone?

Grantham is hardly the most lucrative bus territory but Centrebus was updating the fleet with some judicious secondhand purchases.

BU16UWP is an Volvo B8RLE/MCV Evolution 2 that was new to Roberts Travel for Leicester Park and Ride; it later moved from Centrebus to Chaserider. Meanwhile e400 SN13CHZ was a former Yellow Buses machine that Centrebus purchased after that business failed. Grantham bus station is an underwhelming location.

Got this one in 2014 as a secondhand. Since the previous owner had built the “Cosmo Cleaner D” and applied the name sticker on the display stand – and what an awful job he did… – I had to disassemble the clear and tidy up a bit but for the sticker, I decided to leave it on as is as the material used for it will not allow heat up detaching and reapply without creasing it. Other than that there are a few imperfections but it is not to lose night’s sleep. Overall it is a nice Yamato model for sure. Marked the scale as 1/625th with light & sound gimmicks and more. Released by Bandai in 2001 and that is already near 20 years ago…!

Everything is thrifted or secondhand except for the boots, which are by Frye, and the tights, which are probably from Target. The skirt isn't supposed to be that wrinkled, but that's what happens when you wear linen, right?

Not the most flattering shot, but I was too hungry to care. Today was my day off, so I spent it doing the grocery shopping our Thanksgiving feast. Hooray cranberries! Consequently I wanted to wear something comfy and warm. While I was tempted to schlub around in workout pants and one of hubby's sweatshirts, I decided to steal his new scarf instead. I love the way the shades of green look together.

I started collecting cupless saucers because they had nice patterns on them, and without the cups, they are also cheap.

This one's produced in Latvia by Riga Porcelain.

We haven’t been going out secondhand shopping much as most of our trips involve dropping things off to donate. We have been looking for some furniture items so we’ve had to stop out here and there. Today we found these two homemade actual wood shelves and while the color isn’t ideal, we’re going to dig around in our paint stores and repaint them tomorrow. We also found three small corner selves, also homemade, and we’re using two as speaker stands for our stereo and one on the stairs. We got all 5 pieces of furniture for less than $40. I also found this incredible hand stitched quilt. I fully plan on picking the blanket apart and using the fabric on a skirt idea I’ve been sourcing vintage fabric for. We also got this dish and mug, they won’t be for eating/drinking with but I have some ideas.

A somewhat complex construct.

Blogged with scans from inside.

Added: this one I bought off of ebay, super cheap after thrifting the other.

I'm guessing a funeral procession? Undated slide.

No info on the back of this plate!

Despite my really brown thumb, I bought a bunch of plants to "spring-up" the place. this is my favorite. It's a 4-foot long hanging "string of bananas".

jinbocho is known as a place where there's loads of secondhand book stores

Children's Hospital Los Angeles partnered with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to host a forum on the impact of secondhand smoke on families and children exposed in their apartments and condos on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The forum aimed to educate and inform community leaders, elected officials and the public health community about policy-based options for creating smoke-free environments at home. Jonathan Fielding, MD, MPH, MA, MBA, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, led the conference along with Robert Adler, MD of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Jonathan Samet, MD, MS of the Keck School of Medicine at USC participated as an expert in environmental health and preventive medicine.

It feels like saturday. Very hot in San Diego today.

I felt like documenting a few of the cute things I picked up while thrifting/antiquing/rummaging in March/April.

Bill Campbell's Second Hand Books, which has loads of Penguins and Pelicans in stock. Had a nice long chat with the Finnish lady looking after the place.
