First secondhand bookshop in Abu Dhabi
ثرفت، أول متجر كتب مستعملة في أبوظبي والوحيد كما أعرف.
المكان صغير ومزدحم بمئات إن لم يكن آلاف الكتب.
Two girls, three op shops, one day. Today after the most surreal doctor's visit which involved a cake and the reception staff and Vanessa coming into my consultation to sing happy birthday to me and my GP, we went op shopping, and I think our protective ghosts were assisting us with our purchases, cus I got these good things. And Vanessa also got some good things!
ps. TOMORROW IS MY BIRTHDAY.
Pictures of the kimono and related items I bought from a tiny second-hand shop I found in Arashiyama, Kyoto.
I bought:
Black Haori (3000)
Pale Green Haori (1000)
White/Black Kimono (5000)
Green/Blue Kimono (2000)
Blue Rainbow Obi Set (2500)
White Tabi Socks (1000)
Red Cord Zori Shoes (1500)
There are expected minor imperfections, mostly on the insides along common sweat stain areas or a few possible sunburn spots. I believe they're all mainly silk though, and they're very well-made.
The obi is a premade-type, so I don't have to learn how to tie it! Thank god, otherwise I'd never wear these.

A laurel made from secondhand sheets and lace.
Here in Benin, old lace tablecloth/curtains are used everywhere: hairnets, coverings for food so flies don’t come in, privacy curtains at doors and windows, and more.
What I enjoy more is buying the lace. In the US, we throw out things that are in perfectly good condition, but where do they actually go? One answer is Africa, where our unwanted stuff is resold in piles on the streets here. It’s fun to “thrift” for the fabric here and then make something out of materials originally destined for the trash.
I bought a lace sheet and a curtain sheet to line it with, however since the lace was already heavy this dress is very thick and more suited for winter. I finished the edges with bias tape facing & added pockets because they’re just too useful to leave out.
I wrote more in my sewing journal here: cathywu.com/journal/treadling/2013/04/14/secondhand-lace-...
We got her out of the jumble of toys in the cardboard box, with her hair all tangled, wearing only a pair of oversized hoop earrings. V. gave her a nice bath and put her in one of the dresses Grandma made, and we're going to try to help her get an office job.
Yesterday evening we went to our favourite seconhand store, so much to see and to want!! Ifound some nice hankies to screenprint.

Bought recently in Seattle, when I just happened upon a place in Ballard that was selling off a bunch of vintage fabrics from the collection of a woman who was a dressmaker for musicians in the 60's and 70's. Oh, how I wish I'd picked up some more of the other prints and woolens!!!
