Madrid, Cuesta Moyano, any given Sunday. Popular prices within everybody's reach. Who can walk past the stands without buying at least one?
I've been somewhat enchanted with the standard SDM "Momo" for quite a while now. I wasn't impressed by her initial images, but oddly enough I started falling for her cute little face when I saw a listing for a secondhand Momo on Mandarake. There was something about the pictures of the doll up for sale that I really found appealing, even though they were simply straightforward images of a product for resale.
When I attended the LA Dolpa in September 2019, I happened to chat for a while with another attendee who had SDM Momo, and she was even cuter in person! ♥ There were a small pile of Momos in the Sumika pop-up shop; I felt very tempted to bring home a new doll right this minute when I saw them! Unfortunately, I had received some news prior to the Dolpa that made purchasing a new doll not an entirely smart decision, so I refrained from doing so. Even though I knew it was the "right" choice, I definitely felt some regret when I left the event and the boxes of SDM Momo behind.
Circumstances changed shortly after, thankfully, and this time I hoped to celebrate, possibly with a new doll... only to find that Volks USA and Volks International were out of stock of SDM Momo. (That's just how things go sometimes, isn't it?)
I chatted about this a bit with a friend I'd spent time with at Dolpa, only to have said friend reveal to me that she'd bought the last SDM Momo from Volks USA, but wasn't entirely finding the doll to her liking... Coincidentally, she'd also be visiting my area in October...
It was a bit too convenient of a sort of thing for me to resist! I was able to do a favour for a friend, who was in a way doing me a favour, and a new doll would take a small trip to relocate. For those reasons there's no box opening—I do have her box, but she didn't arrive in it. These are the first pictures that I had a decent amount of sunlight for!
I bought this dress set at the LA Dolpa, and it felt extra fun to put the new doll in something new. (I brought my F-12, Rina, to LA Dolpa and there were all sorts of fun MSD/SDM-sized things to bring home.) She may have gotten a new wig or two, because I just adore doll wigs. It took me a bit to settle on her name, but I like that Risa is similar to Rina but not entirely the same.
I'm now trying to resist the urge to get another one and have twin Momos...
Honestly, I've done so little with my dolls for so long that it feels really nice to take pictures of her and what-not. I even attended a local doll event, despite being a bit of a hermit most of the time. It would be nice to keep this type of feeling sustained for a little bit. ♥
Without having connected or even sorted a single puzzle piece the first week of August has been one of my better puzzle weeks.
It's been insanely busy at work for the past months and all I have been doing is working, eating, sleeping and in between I somehow managed to find some time for bathroom breaks and personal ablutions. I already had a year's contract and in July my supervisor told me a full (open-ended) contract has been okayed. The work load and working conditions are such that I wasn't sure I would accept.
Then on Friday 3 August I heard about a job opening in another part of the company. More or less the same work I'm doing already, although it also encompasses a bit of work coordination for a small team of people. Much better hours though, basically fixed from 8 to 5. Overtime is rare and even the regular work load is a lot less. For the same money. The person I heard it from was approached for the position but he declined. On Thursday 9 August I spoke with the supervisor there and I got the position. Now it's just a matter of when I make the (full) transition.
I will have time to work on puzzles again! Also, the three-month heat wave broke and now it's more like puzzle weather.
There are two more reasons why that first week of August was a great puzzle week. Found a puzzle of a lake in the Bavarian Alps. There's some castle in the foreground. Had to drive to Eindhoven to get it, but it was worth it. And that same day I spotted the painting for sale online. It's the difficult, uncropped version. And yes, that is 100% genuine Ravensburger factory sealing.
I had this message all lined up to be put online, and of course my internet upgrade went wrong. They needed to replace the router and it took over a week for them to drop by. But at least I'm back online again. Puzzling will commense soon...
The other day I had plenty of fun thrifting.
Sadly, "one size" usually does NOT fit me... But with the colours this yummy, I couldn't just leave them there either.

There are expected minor imperfections, mostly on the insides along common sweat stain areas or a few possible sunburn spots. I believe they're all mainly silk though, and they're very well-made.
The obi is a premade-type, so I don't have to learn how to tie it! Thank god, otherwise I'd never wear these.

Matthew Herbert – Secondhand Sounds
Yo no suelo escribir palabras definitivas, porque ya he podido ver sus efectos. La palabra es un instrumento, pero igualmente sobre él hay que tener uso del corazón y de la mente. Y si esto además se amplía a las actividades propias de quien debe comunicar con palabras y obras su trabajo, es mejor saber hacerlo a tener que sufrir por la incomprensión. Un personaje que tiene grabaciones de otros para remezclar, debe saber que el artista que se las confía lega así su obra para que otro pueda hacer sea ella capaz de transformarse y tal vez no tener otro significado (la remezcla no debe ser algo que confunda, pero si que permita apreciar y querer tanto la obra original como este nuevo resultado). Un personaje que tiene grabaciones de otro artista, junto a una libertad creadora para modificarlas debe honrar, pero además ser auténtico a la hora de cambiar. Mantener una esencia, más aportarle la suya.
Y creo que alguien como Matthew Herbert ha estado ofreciendo en los últimos años una serie de remezclas tan interesantes como gratificantes dentro de la cultura electrónica de los últimos años. ¿Por qué? Porque Herbert es un artista activo, inquieto, crítico y comprometido, pero igualmente divertido y fascinante. Quiero encontrar palabras precisas para este señor cuya obra lleva ya unos diez años en mi cabeza, a quien puedo decir que me ha impactado las dos veces que lo he visto en vivo (Cannes, enero de 2003 y Montreal, junio de 2004). Pero a veces las palabras precisas no alcanzan a cubrir (o se alejan) de las emociones sentidas al verlo en vivo y al escuchar la extensión de su obra en una recopilación como esta.
Herbert puede ser una persona tan prolífica como cuidadosa. Así como ha hecho música con su nombre o con seudónimos como Wishmountain, Dr. Rockit o Radioboy, enfrenta su propia obra con calidad y certeza. Herbert sabe muy bien lo que significa lograr que una persona se conmueva o sienta el gusto por bailar y sea seducido por los sonidos que él propone. Lo ha hecho de diversas maneras, tanto para él, como para otros. Nos ocuparemos entonces de lo que para otro ha hecho con esta doble producción lanzada por el sello británico Peacefrog en el 2002. Contiene una sustanciosa colección de remezclas que llevó a cabo entre 1996 y 2001 para artistas como Moloko, Mono, Motorbass, Dimbiman, Louis Austen, Nils Peter Molvaer y otras que realizó para él mismo también.
Son más de diez mil segundos donde los rasgos de la mezcla de Herbert se reconocen en las líneas de bajo, los beats adecuados, el uso de sampleos únicos (hay que recordar que Herbert tiene una especie de decálogo de trabajo y uso de fragmentos sonoros en un documento de lo que él llama PPCOM, que se puede consultar aquí: www.matthewherbert.com/pccom.php), junto a una manera de mantener la presencia de la voz original, sin hacer que ella pierda su vigencia.
Cada tema del compilado hace sentir que el efecto de Herbert está siendo una ayuda para cada una de las canciones, por la manera como se presenta, pasando por diversos estados sonoros y de ánimo que pueden hacer que el oyente solo quiera escuchar o solo quiera bailar. Cabe destacar cómo cada mezcla está acompañada por un alias de Matthew, que entre comillas sirve para caracterizarlo. Yo tengo de verdad especial afecto por este compilado, que llegó a mis manos, sin estarlo buscando en una de las tiendas Mixup de México, en la Zona Rosa de aquella ciudad. Vale la pena buscarlo, porque demuestra el por qué Herbert está aún vigente y seguirá estándolo un tiempo más. La manera como “mete mano” en los demás hace que frecuentemente esté siendo llamado por otros para que los remezcle, de modo tal que no me extrañaría (y aún más, desearía) que apareciera un segundo volumen igualmente doble de remezclas tan buenas como necesarias como la que este señor nos ha presentado en estos años.

This is a nice bookshop off the main road into Springdale, Utah and Zion National Park. I enjoyed shopping here and both Brian and I bought a couple of books.

Jeans and other pants are shipped via Cambodias’ Kampongsom Sea Port. ตัวเลขน่าแปลกใจ พ่อค้าแม่ค้าที่ไปเช่าบูธค้าในตลาดโรงเกลือทั้ง 4 ตลาด 90% เป็นเขมรเชื้อสายจีน และเวียดนาม ไม่ใช่คนท้องถิ่นติดกับไทย ล้วนมาจากเมืองใหญ่ๆ ในเขมร อย่างพนมเปญ พระตะบอง เสียมเรียบ กำปงโสม กำปงทม กำปงจาม อีก 10% เป็นพ่อค้าไทย จำนวนมากมีร้านค้าของตนอยู่ที่สวนจตุจักรด้วย และมีท่าทีว่าจะขยายความสัมพันธ์ทางการค้าไปอีกหลายประเทศและหลายทวีป เห็นได้จากจะเห็นพ่อค้าเกาหลี ญี่ปุ่น ปากีสถาน อินเดีย ฝรั่ง และอีกหลายชาติ มักหารือเรื่องการส่งออกและนำเข้ากับพ่อค้าโรงเกลือบ่อยๆ
