Scrolls by Mark Moreland

In case folk think that all i do is lego, and not much of that at that. Here's what i've been working on in what i'll laughingly refer to as "my freetime." It's the story of my wife told in a scroll. The idea is a constantly evolving work that i and/or my sons keep adding to.

Meine erste Foto-Einzelausstellung präsentiert im Café Berio, Berlin

Vernissage 31. Juli 2018 | Finissage 22. September 2018

My first solo photo exhibition presented at Café Berio, Berlin

Opening July 31, 2018 | Closing September 22, 2018

In my first solo photo exhibition, I showed my Berlin portraits and some of my bird photographs; hence the title of the exhibition. In my photo project, I wanted to get away from the usual deliberately chosen locations for a photo shoot. There is usually something very impersonal about a studio or a selected location for people. I wanted to go where it is most authentic; to the places where the protagonists (mostly artists) are at home and in their element: on stage, backstage and before, during and after a performance or event. I want to show the viewer images that they don't necessarily see during an event and capture outsiders as if they had witnessed it live.

I presented over 70 works in the exhibition, including portraits of Romy Haag, Henry de Winter, Hanna Schygulla, Georgette Dee, Dieter Rita Scholl, Gloria Viagra, Ades Zabel, Frank Wilde, Gaby Tupper and many others.

Birds live on every continent. They are elusive, shy animals. In my photographs, however, they allow an improbable closeness. I have captured what is actually alien and invisible in nature in my bird portraits.

My motto: "Authenticity is the keyword that lies behind my photography. I prefer to show more the human touch and less the retouch."

Most of the exhibits were created in the queer community.

Sigrid Grajek: Berlin, the 1920s - a city in turmoil, Berlin 2020

100 years of the 1920s: Charleston dress, cocaine, absinthe, monocle, tailcoat, champagne, feather boa, dancing on a volcano, sophisticated entertainment and nights until dawn as if each one was the last...

So much for the nostalgia and images that usually arise in people's minds in connection with the so-called "Golden Twenties". However, all this basically only concerns the period between 1924 and 1929. Sigrid Grajek, on the other hand, is concerned with the years from 1918 to 1933, i.e. those between the two world wars, where a dark and bitter side is revealed beneath the dazzlingly beautiful "Berlin in the light" surface. Hunger, poverty, filth, crime - right next door to these so-called 'Golden 20s'. Zille's milieu, backyard romance, unemployment, the rise of right-wing populists, National Socialists, the will to survive and the famous Berlin humor.

Although we speak of the "Weimar Republic", Berlin was the pulsating center. The different realities of life during these fifteen years were documented in a multitude of songs and texts with often unflinching humor. Sigrid Grajek compiles her selection from these and creates a musical-literary mirror of the era. She presents this period in her own unique way, with conferences, explanations, political statements and songs from that very time.

An exciting and entertaining evening with splendor, social criticism, Berlin humor and history.

'Served In A Mug' is a poem written as a series of tantwenga (tanrenga written via Twitter) linked to the script of the classic early seventies British film Get Carter. It comes out of the ongoing work of Bred Pudding Collective around their new film project 'Man From The North' a kind of 'Get Carter' in reverse written and conceived by Bred Pudding Collective's Russ Ralph.

The photograph is of Paul Conneally (Little Onion) sporting prototype designer 'DUCKWORTH' spectacles by IF (Involuntary Fashion) created out of a ping pong messenger session with New York artist Millree Hughes during a discussion about future Involuntary Painting projects and the upcoming Involuntary Mexico shows planned for later in 2019.

GRAND OPENING World Press Photo, Willy-Brandt-Haus, Berlin 2015

The Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V., Gruner+Jahr and the magazines Stern and Geo present the photo exhibition.

A clear statement against the persecution of homosexuals in Russia has been voted the world's best press photo of the year. The jury of the World Press Photo competition awarded the prestigious prize to Danish photographer Mads Nissen. He photographed the gay couple Jon and Alex in an intimate moment in Saint Petersburg. The photo is part of a larger project by the photographer on the subject of “Homophobia in Russia”.

The jury justified its choice by stating that the photo impressively addresses a universal topic. Life in Russia is becoming increasingly difficult for homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. “Sexual minorities face legal and social discrimination, persecution and even violent hate crimes from conservative religious and nationalist groups,” the jury's report states.

“This photograph has great aesthetic power and shows humanity,” said jury chair Michele McNally, director of photography at The New York Times. “Violent images today are produced by terrorists for propaganda purposes. Our response to this must be more subtle,” said jury member Alessia Glaviano.

The jury selected the winners from around 98,000 photos from 131 countries. Prizes were awarded to 42 photographers in eight categories. The winning photos will be shown in an exhibition in Amsterdam from April and then in over 40 countries. They will be exhibited at the Willy Brandt House in Berlin from June 5 to 28.
