Scroll outline, traced from copy paper to good Bristol Board, soon to be beautifully illuminated (I hope). (gettin' all artsy with the camera here...)
A scroll I have in my dining room that a friend of mine brought back from her trip to China. As you can see below, it is a scroll that blesses the family.

Playing with smoke and ACR (Adobe Camera Raw plug-in). I discovered that using different colored gels did not really have the desired effect of coloring just the smoke, but of coloring the black backdrop as well. Instead, I used ACR to switch the image to Grayscale and then applying a duotone coloring worked better.
Strobist Info:
Canon 580EX Speedlite, acting as Master trigger (Group A), flash disabled. Flash Ratio A:B was 1:1.
Canon 430EX Speedlite (Group B) positioned to camera's left and just behind, but pointing toward smoke trail.
Self-color floral pattern in glossy finish is printed over every item and makes up for the base design of this product. A see thru cut-out on front of card covered with clear plastic, makes room for name of bride and groom or Event name. Round wooden bars are used to give an ethnic look. Scroll is also printed with same pattern but in color matching to box with space for text on one side.
To make a history scroll, take a paper bag and cut out the bottom and one edge. This leaves a long sheet, which will be your "parchment." Color in the figures on the sheet and cut out. Paste them onto your parchment with your creative thoughts! Roll it up to form a scroll.
Today the Jodo Mission of Hawaii saw the return of its hand-painted Japanese hanging scroll. At least 60 years old and the second largest such artifact in Hawaii, it was fully restored by skilled Japanese artisans under the direction of Japan Memorial Corporation's Tatsuji Maeda, who presented the restoration work to the Jodo Mission board this morning. This prized artwork will be carefully stored and only displayed in the temple maybe twice a year. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about these scrolls, it was certainly an education for us (and a substantial investment).
I spent about a week building this box, with leather hinges, to store a scroll I was lucky to get in Japan. I'll probably spend a year finishing it.

Calligraphy, Illumination, and Words by me.
Capital based on a page from an Italian Manuscript, ca late 1400's, as found in "For It Is Written: Treasures of the Vatican Library".
I had a hard time chosing between this and the studded armor. I like the top on this one better because there's no shirt and you can see more of his skin. But the loin cloth isn't that interesting, though the shape is pretty close.
I like these a lot more than my other attempt with this yarn. The smaller stitch count and lace pattern do a great job of obscuring the color-striping.
