Cream box card - Elegantly framed and designed to soothe. This organic piece of beauty is for the sophisticated ones. The cream-colored handmade silk paper in the form of scroll card redefines the meaning of classic beauty. The golden design bars that frame the card add a touch of glitter to it. A golden ribbon ties the box envelope.
This was glued back together so the violin could be displayed for show. This repair job would NOT hold up if someone tried to tune it up to tension and play.
The scroll has golden bars for support and a golden & red silken threads combined to form the tassel for tying. The box envelope is of velvet.
Pictures taken for putting it on eBay, but might as well stick 'em here too, and maybe get around to putting this in the PigPog museum sometime.
Vellum cut for Joan's scroll. Bummed the piece wasn't a tiny bit bigger so I could have cut it the other way and had two 12x16 pieces.
Hand forged and hammered silver scrolls dangle on a handmade ear wire.

The paper is too large for my scanner, so this is just the left half of the page.
This is my protest to the infinite scrolling feature that is Flickr decided to go with. I find it to waste my time and take away the enjoyment and usability of flickr. Lets all join together to abolish infinite scrolling.
When we arrived in the venue, this image was being projected on a screen. It shows the late Jimmy Saville introducing Frank Bruno to Peter Sutcliffe. The first North Sea Scroll was performed with this above the players, but the picture I took of that was too blurry.
I am currently in Ireland but wanted to release this series on my photostream from the Flickr photo shoot of the Downtown YMCA of Greater Houston building that I did the Sunday before I left town. The "green scroll" of Iran's green social movement was assembled in Washington, D.C., following the disputed 2009 presidential election when Iranians from more than 180 countries wrote their hopes for Iranian democracy and doubts about President Ahmadinejad's legitimacy on pieces of green cloth and mailed them to Paris. The individual pieces of fabric were assembled in a scroll measuring more than 2 kilometers long. The scroll traveled from Paris to the Hague and New York before coming to Washington.

I like these a lot more than my other attempt with this yarn. The smaller stitch count and lace pattern do a great job of obscuring the color-striping.

First line of script: After adding the loops, and having some trouble with keeping my pen straight (note: I was stricken with bronchitis while working on the calligraphy, and had to pause several times for coughing fits), I had deemed that for the ascenders to properly match to the cadell's own loops, the bottom of the text must also be looped, with enough space for the augmentation within a medallion/circle.
The original solution to the issue of not having a pre-approved augmentation charge by the college of Arms, after consult with the Laurel Queen, was to leave the Arms as they currently were, and place a badge/medallion/circle below the text, to be filled in once a suitable charge (medusa head or no) has been approved.
As she does very beautiful scrolls and there is something about a fish purse as well that comes to mind.

Materials: Speedball dip pen, gold poster paint, gouache, watercolor, Higgins black magic ink.
*This scroll no longer exists, it was burned up in a house fire at Baron Sir Muirdoch's house later in the year (recipient was not at the event).
I'm salvaging the scroll wheel, etc. I might incorporate it directly on the laptop as a little sidecar. I did repair the broken USB pin but the computer reports that there's a problem. I have started mapping out the schematics for the scroll switch. There's an LED, three switches and provision for a fourth, and two transistors to pull up the signal coming from the scroll wheel. I'm having fun reverse engineering this.
Glad I took this and I didn't know why just then, but this is an instrument that is a little homeless just now- we gave the piano away. I liked the piano, It wasn't good for much, but I liked it. Ahh. Shit dies. New shit comes along. Such is life. For now the little fiddle stands in a corner hoping someone who can play it worth anything comes along. Twice neglected and now suffering this indignity.

Scroll #3 completed. I was able to play with the lighting effects in post to make it look sort of like the pictures I have seen of existing scrolls of the period. What I learned after the first one is that you never erase the pencil lines on the parts that haven't been written yet to help out the person who is finishing it in case that person isn't you (or even in case that person is you).
Unlike my costuming efforts, which focus for the most part on the 16th century, I have been working on calligraphy and illumination styles that date to around the turn of the first millenium and a little later. I'm determined to keep working on it until I get the hand looking right.

Vom Wasser aus erstrahlten die illuminierten Uferpromenaden und Gebäudekomplexe in außergewöhnlichem Licht. Mit mehr als 70 Projektions-, Klang- und Videoeffekten erschien vor unseren Augen ein Gesamtkunstwerk aus Licht und Farben und vermittelte spannende Sichtachsen, Perspektiven und Eindrücke.
Empfang, Moderation, Entertainment:
Nach dem Check-in und Boarding begrüßte Herrin de Luxe (Nelly Morell) vom Berliner Club 'Rauschgold' und führte durch den Abend.
Mit der Reederei Riedel wurde ein Schiff mit ca. 150 Plätzen zur Verfügung gestellt, die speziell einem Teil der Passagiere von ‚CSD auf der Spree‘ angeboten wurden.

Festival of Lights - Berlin shines, 2014
The capital was lit up for the Berlin Festival of Lights: over 10 days from nightfall, more than 70 objects were illuminated by well-known artists and light designers, including striking building facades, bridges and Berlin landmarks.
In 2014, the motto of the light art festival was: World Stage Berlin.
The aim was to illuminate the metropolis of Berlin as an urban stage for life. Two dominant east-west axes were used to document and accentuate the key urban development processes of the last 100 years.
To mark the twentieth anniversary of the Berlin-Beijing city partnership, a special focus was placed on Chinese light art in 2014.

After check-in and boarding, Mistress de Luxe (Nelly Morell) from the Berlin club 'Rauschgold' welcomed us and guided us through the evening.
The Riedel shipping company provided a ship with approx. 150 seats, which were specially offered to some of the passengers of 'CSD on the Spree'.

Bereits zum zweiten Mal folgte einer der bekanntesten Sänger in Deutschland, Max Raabe, einer Einladung ins Allianz-Forum. Und auch zum zweiten Mal widmete sich die Veranstaltungsreihe Pariser Platz der Kulturen einem Komponisten, dessen Lieder zwar fast jeder kennt, den Namen dahinter dagegen kaum jemand.
Am 12. Mai 2015 lud das Allianz-Forum zum 45. Pariser Platz der Kulturen ein – eine Veranstaltung, die mit Liedern des jüdischen Komponisten Walter Jurmann an das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs und der Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten erinnern sollte, die den Komponisten aus Deutschland vertrieben hatten. Er flüchtete 1933 zunächst nach Paris, von wo aus er nach Los Angeles geholt wurde.
Max Raabe - selbst bekennender Jurmann-Verehrer - sprach zu Beginn des Abends mit Regine Lorenz, Leiterin des Allianz Stiftungsforums und Initiatorin der Veranstaltung, über sein Verhältnis zu Walter Jurmann, dessen Lieder er im Anschluss an das Interview, begleitet von Christoph Israel am Flügel, auf der Bühne des Allianz-Forums präsentierte.
Der Abend war zugleich auch der Witwe Yvonne Jurmann gewidmet, die im Mai 90 Jahre alt geworden ist und extra aus Los Angeles eingeflogen kam, um die Ehrung des Lebenswerks ihres 1971 verstorbenen Mannes hier in Berlin mitzuerleben.
Walter Jurmann war ein Künstler, dessen Musik die zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre wie keine andere prägte. Auf die Frage, warum kaum jemand die Person kennt, die sich hinter Kompositionen wie „Veronika, der Lenz ist da“ verbirgt, lieferte Max Raabe die Antwort: „Sein Name war ihm nicht wichtig, er lebte fern jeder Eitelkeit nur in seiner Musik.“ Auch Raabe selbst habe erst nach und nach festgestellt, dass er viele Stücke Jurmanns in seinem Programm hat. Er verdanke diesem Komponisten sehr viel: „Ein Mann, der so viele Stücke für mich geschrieben hat – ohne mich zu kennen, natürlich!“
Jurmanns Werke charakterisiert Raabe als „zeitlos“. Neben unterhaltendem Schlager und Pariser Chansons umfasst sein Repertoire auch amerikanischen Jazz und Pop. Seine musikalische Vielfalt spiegelt sich in seiner Lebensgeschichte wider.
Aufgrund seiner jüdischen Herkunft war Jurmann gezwungen, 1933 nach Frankreich zu emigrieren. Es zog ihn weiter nach Hollywood, wo er erfolgreich Filmmusiken komponierte. Das Leben in unterschiedlichen Ländern verlieh Jurmann die Gabe, sich in die verschiedensten Musikwelten einzufühlen: „Er ist wie seine Musik“, sagte Jurmanns Frau einmal in einem Interview.
Dass es in Jurmanns Werk viel zu entdecken gibt, konnte das Publikum während des einstündigen Konzerts von Max Raabe und Christoph Israel selbst erleben. Neben dem Schlagerklassiker „Veronika, der Lenz ist da“, durften auch Stücke wie „San Francisco“, „Ein spanischer Tango“ und „Was weißt du, wie ich verliebt bin“ nicht fehlen.

For the second time, one of Germany's best-known singers, Max Raabe, accepted an invitation to the Allianz Forum. And for the second time, the Pariser Platz der Kulturen event series was also dedicated to a composer whose songs almost everyone knows, but hardly anyone knows the name behind them.
On 12 May 2015, the Allianz Forum hosted the 45th Pariser Platz der Kulturen - an event that was intended to commemorate the end of the Second World War and the rule of the National Socialists, who had driven the composer out of Germany, with songs by the Jewish composer Walter Jurmann. He initially fled to Paris in 1933, from where he was taken to Los Angeles.
Max Raabe - himself a self-confessed Jurmann admirer - began the evening by talking to Regine Lorenz, Director of the Allianz Foundation Forum and initiator of the event, about his relationship with Walter Jurmann, whose songs he performed on stage at the Allianz Forum after the interview, accompanied by Christoph Israel on the grand piano.
The evening was also dedicated to his widow Yvonne Jurmann, who turned 90 in May and flew in from Los Angeles especially to witness the honouring of the life's work of her husband, who died in 1971, here in Berlin.
Walter Jurmann was an artist whose music characterised the twenties and thirties like no other. When asked why hardly anyone knows the person behind compositions such as ‘Veronika, der Lenz ist da’, Max Raabe provided the answer: ‘His name was not important to him, he lived far from any vanity only in his music.’ Raabe himself only gradually realised that he had many of Jurmann's pieces in his programme. He owes a great deal to this composer: ‘A man who wrote so many pieces for me - without knowing me, of course!’
Raabe characterises Jurmann's works as ‘timeless’. In addition to entertaining pop songs and Parisian chansons, his repertoire also includes American jazz and pop. His musical diversity is reflected in his life story.
Due to his Jewish origins, Jurmann was forced to emigrate to France in 1933. He moved on to Hollywood, where he successfully composed film scores. Living in different countries gave Jurmann the gift of being able to empathise with the most diverse musical worlds: ‘He is like his music,’ Jurmann's wife once said in an interview.
During the one-hour concert by Max Raabe and Christoph Israel, the audience was able to experience for themselves that there is much to discover in Jurmann's work. In addition to the classic pop song ‘Veronika, der Lenz ist da’, pieces such as ‘San Francisco’, ‘Ein spanischer Tango’ and ‘Was weißt du, wie ich verliebt bin’ were not to be missed.

The question was posed: What is your favorite handmade gift you have received? There are a couple. The first is already packed -- it's a hand-drawn birthday card presented to me during a trip through the UK. And this is another. A handwritten scroll given to me after a successful battle against cancer. It reads:
If God would choose a plant to represent him, I think he would choose of all plants the cactus. The cactus has all the blessings he tried, but mostly failed, to give to man. Let me tell you how. It has humility, but it is not submissive. It grows where no other plant will grow. It does not complain when the sun bakes it back or the wing tears it from the cliff or drowns it in the dry sand of the desert or when it is thirsty. When the rain comes it stores water for the hard times to come. In good times and in bad it will still flower. It protects itself against danger, but it harms no other plant. It adapts perfectly to almost any environment. It has patience and enjoys solitude. In Mexico there is a cactus that flowers only once every hundred years and at night. This is saintliness of an extraordinary kind, would you not agree? The cactus has properties that heal the wounds of men and from it come potions that can make man touch the face of God or stare into the mouth of hell. It is the plant of patience and solitude, love and madness, ugliness and beauty, toughness and gentleness. Of all plants, surely God made the cactus in his own image?
