The scroll has golden bars for support and a golden & red silken threads combined to form the tassel for tying. The box envelope is of velvet.
Pictures taken for putting it on eBay, but might as well stick 'em here too, and maybe get around to putting this in the PigPog museum sometime.
My friend and assistant Peter Bingen crafted these, he has a different technique to me. Holding the block plane with his hand above the mouth, the shaving gets pleated as it comes through. This shaving has a more complex phrasing than the simple spiral. It also makes me think of pasta
Vellum cut for Joan's scroll. Bummed the piece wasn't a tiny bit bigger so I could have cut it the other way and had two 12x16 pieces.
When we arrived in the venue, this image was being projected on a screen. It shows the late Jimmy Saville introducing Frank Bruno to Peter Sutcliffe. The first North Sea Scroll was performed with this above the players, but the picture I took of that was too blurry.
Hand forged and hammered silver scrolls dangle on a handmade ear wire.
Oxidized and sanded silver, giving these earrings a unique and interesting look.

Bertolt Brecht monument and the rotating illuminated signet, Berlin 2015
The Berliner Ensemble (abbreviated to BE) is one of the best-known theatres in the German capital. It became famous through performances of the works of its founder Bertolt Brecht and is considered one of the leading German-speaking theatres.
In 1954, the Berliner Ensemble took over the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm and renamed it. The Theater am Schiffbauerdamm becomes the Berliner Ensemble. Helene Weigel is artistic director from the beginning, Bertolt Brecht is artistic director.
Based on a design by the German theatre director Peter Palitzsch, the red and white rotating signet of the Berliner Ensemble, which is still familiar today, was created in 1954 and mounted on the top of the tower.
Bertolt-Brecht-Platz is a square in front of the Berliner Ensemble. In 1988, Fritz Cremer inaugurated a memorial to Bertolt Brecht on the occasion of his 90th birthday, based on a design by Peter Flierl. A small triangular lawn and trees planted on three sides form the square's green areas. The bronze monument was created by sculptor Fritz Cremer, the stelae by stonemason Carl Wloch.

Weidendammer Bridge
Today's Weidendammer Bridge was built between 1894 and 1896 according to a design by the German architect Otto Stahn to replace the previous bridge. Before the Second World War, the bridge was rebuilt as a new subway tunnel was built underneath it. The bridge survived the Allied bombing during the Second World War. After Hitler's suicide on April 30, 1945, the bridge played a central role in the attempt by German soldiers and the Führer's bunker personnel to escape from the surrounded city center.
The Weidendammer Bridge in Berlins Mitte district spans Friedrichstrasse over the Spree. It dates back to an original construction on the same site from the 17th century, making today's bridge the third oldest bridge in the area of Berlin's old city center.
Situated at a central point in the city, the bridge has also played a role in art and literature on several occasions:
- The heroes of Erich Kästners children's book “Pünktchen und Anton” sold matches and shoelaces on the bridge at night.
- Novel 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' by Alfred Döblin, 1929
- Novel 'Die Hauptstadt' by Robert Menasse, 1991
- Theodor Fontane and Emilie Rouanet-Kummer got engaged on the bridge on December 8, 1845. The engagement led to a marriage that lasted happily ever after.
- In 1976, singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann sang about his personal and the German-German rift during the Cold War in 'Ballad of the Prussian Icarus'. A lament in the face of the Weidendammer Bridge. Biermann, then almost 40 years old, had been banned from performing in the GDR for eleven years and only sang in front of friends in his living room.
- The Weidendammer Bridge appears several times in Christa Wolfs texts. On the one hand in “One Day a Year”, where the granddaughter stops several times and points out small suns on the bridge to her grandmother. In the story “Leibhaftig” (2002), the first-person narrator, in a dream-like state, meets a couple with an imaginary friend on the Weidendammer Bridge, who stop at the Prussian Eagle and look into the Spree. The narrator is an invisible observer and describes to the reader her dream/intermediate state experience of two people who, she assumes, want to flee across the nearby “Palace of Tears”.
The bridge has been a listed building since the 1970s.
Weidendammer Brücke is located not far from Friedrichstraße station. The Berliner Ensemble and the Friedrichstadtpalast are in the immediate vicinity.

I am currently in Ireland but wanted to release this series on my photostream from the Flickr photo shoot of the Downtown YMCA of Greater Houston building that I did the Sunday before I left town. It is scheduled to be torn down and rebuilt around the corner in 2010. Sad...it is a lovely building!!! www.houstonpress.com/bestof/2008/award/best-public-pool-9...
The "green scroll" of Iran's green social movement was assembled in Washington, D.C., following the disputed 2009 presidential election when Iranians from more than 180 countries wrote their hopes for Iranian democracy and doubts about President Ahmadinejad's legitimacy on pieces of green cloth and mailed them to Paris. The individual pieces of fabric were assembled in a scroll measuring more than 2 kilometers long. The scroll traveled from Paris to the Hague and New York before coming to Washington.

Epiphone Scroll, late 70's. Hang tag from Mike Guthrie's old shop in Athens GA where I bought it, circa 1999.
Glad I took this and I didn't know why just then, but this is an instrument that is a little homeless just now- we gave the piano away. I liked the piano, It wasn't good for much, but I liked it. Ahh. Shit dies. New shit comes along. Such is life. For now the little fiddle stands in a corner hoping someone who can play it worth anything comes along. Twice neglected and now suffering this indignity.

Scroll #3 completed. I was able to play with the lighting effects in post to make it look sort of like the pictures I have seen of existing scrolls of the period. What I learned after the first one is that you never erase the pencil lines on the parts that haven't been written yet to help out the person who is finishing it in case that person isn't you (or even in case that person is you).
Unlike my costuming efforts, which focus for the most part on the 16th century, I have been working on calligraphy and illumination styles that date to around the turn of the first millenium and a little later. I'm determined to keep working on it until I get the hand looking right.
