Students in the Central Campus Culinary Arts program had a cook-off from saved food scraps during the Midwest Food Recovery Summit at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott Hotel on Sept. 7. America throws away 40% or more of the food it produces, enough to feed millions of hungry people.

For years, ivy had grown on this wall of an elderly house close to the sea front in Hunstanton, Norfolk. Then the time came when the house needed major refurbishment inside and out, and the ivy had to be cut down to give access to the wall. A large colony of House Sparrows, a species on the decline, had inhabited the ivy in recent years - and now, in an attempt to save the sparrows, a large number of nest boxes have been placed on the wall where the ivy was. When the spring comes, we will know if this has been successful.

Typically I don't like this kind of indie film, with slight comedy and family drama, but this won me over. Correctly observed Chinese community in New York and its old-world rules of obligations and "saving face" that makes everybody miserable. The kind of illogic that I used to see all the time in my ex-wife's family. Joan Chen plays the mom who moves back in with her daughter when she ever-so-shamefully becomes pregnant at 48 and won't say who the father is. The daughter is hiding her own lesbianism from the family. Short, watchable, occasionally funny. So there. And the women were cute, so no complaints.
This is a small monument dedicated to the cat in the centre of St.Petersburg. A lot of tourists from all around the world throwing coins onto this cat (kinda tradition, I think). So, the guy on the wall picked up some money (I do not know what was the reason, actually). However, some coins are dropped on the ground and this old woman want to get some...

We just started using a french press to make tea. I am impressed by it's filtering capability. Every other day I like to make a half gallon of hot tea which I let cool, add honey and toss in the fridge. We usually rotate between two of our blends:
1. Perky - ephedra, mint hibiscus
2. Cota - plus some local mint
We grow or wild harvest most of the ingredients so the cost is close to zero for us. I like to compare the price to what it costs to buy pre-made drinks from grocery stores. Most commercial drinks have ingredients we would not want to drink like high fructose corn syrup and cost several dollars for far less quantity.

"Saving Jamaica Bay" tells the story of how one community—led by a family with roots in the area stretching back more than 100 years—fought the government and overcame Hurricane Sandy to clean up and restore the largest open space in New York City, which had become a dumping ground for garbage, sewage, sludge and bullet-riddled mobsters. Narrated by actress Susan Sarandon, the film includes interviews with the community activists who led the fight, and state and city officials. The film also symbolizes efforts to preserve nature, combat climate change and invest in neglected national parks.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Daniel Hendrick.and Tim Dillingham, Executive Director, American Littoral Society.
