This is a photo from Millcreek canyon looking west toward Salt Lake City. I took some photos into the glare of the sun thinking something might work. My camera got the photo but Lightroom helped it along.

Kirchenzentrum Erlöserkirche in Köln-Weidenpesch
Nach der vom Evangelischen Kirchenverband beschlossenen Aufgabe und Zusammenlegung zweier Kirchenstandorte begann die Planung eines hybriden und multifunktional nutzbaren neuen Kirchenzentrums im Kölner Stadtteil Weidenpesch.
Der ausgelobte Architekturwettbewerb sah die Konzeptionierung einer neue Gebäudetypologie vor, die nicht nur einen Sakralraum, sondern auch Flächen für Gemeindeaktivitäten und Verwaltungstätigkeiten in Kombination mit Wohneinheiten und einer KITA bieten sollte.
Das im Jahr 2022 nach Entwürfen des siegreichen Stuttgarter Planungsbüros Harris + Kurrle Architekten fertiggestellte Kirchenzentrum mit der Erlöserkirche setzt einen markanten städtebaulichen Akzent im Kölner Stadtteil Weidenpeschs. Die Architekt*innen planten eine vertikale Schichtung des Raumprogramms in einem kompakten kubischen Baukörper, der durch unterschiedliche Höhenprofile verschiedene Nutzungsbereiche zoniert. Trotz der exponierten Höhenentwicklung wirkt das Gebäude durch seine kompakte Bauweise und gestalterische Zurückhaltung nicht unverhältnismäßig gegenüber der umliegenden Bebauung.
Der westlich vorgelagerte Kirchplatz dient als großzügiger Versammlungsort für die Gemeinde und Öffentlichkeit. Der Platz fungiert in Kombination mit dem Foyer als verlängerter Empfangsbereich und definiert die Adressbildung des Gebäudes. Ergänzend zum Freiraum des westlichen Kirchplatzes steht insbesondere der KITA im Erdgeschoss ein großzügiger Gartenbereich im Norden zur Verfügung. Eine an den Mehrzweckraum und die Gruppenräume anschließende Terrasse kann bei Bedarf für Gemeindefeste genutzt werden.
Das Kirchenzentrum der Erlöserkirche verfügt über zwei separat nutzbare Haupteingänge. Der leicht zurückgesetzte Eingang der Kirche wird durch ein Reliefmauerwerk akzentuiert und vermittelt über den Vorplatz in den Gottesdienstraum. Darüber markiert ein großes Kreuz aus hervortretenden Einzelsteinen die Fassade. Ein weiterer Eingang an der angrenzenden Straße erschließt die KITA und das Treppenhaus. Der zweigeschossige Kirchenraum ist das sakrale Herzstück des Neubaus und wird von der KITA im Gartengeschoss, weiteren Gemeinderäumen im ersten Obergeschoss sowie neun Wohnungen im ersten bis vierten Obergeschoss umgeben. Diese Bereiche sind durch drei unabhängige Treppen erschlossen. Die KITA ist durch einen zentralen Erschließungs- und Mehrzweckraum gegliedert, der alle Gruppen- und Nebenräume verbindet. Die Wohnungen sind winkelförmig über dem Kirchenraum angeordnet und werden durch den abgesetzten Glockenturm räumlich zu einem Kubus vervollständigt.
Das interne Raumprogramm und die nutzungsabhängige Anordnung der Bereiche wird durch die betonten Versprünge der Geschosse und der klinkersichtigen Fassadengestaltung sichtbar. Der gesamte Baukörper erscheint als Kubus, aus dem einige Teile entfernt wurden. Die Fassade der Erlöserkirche weist an den straßenseitigen Ansichten vorwiegend geschlossene Flächen mit großen, gezielt positionierten Fensteröffnungen auf, während die Fassaden der weiteren Bereiche durch ein regelmäßiges Fensterraster gegliedert sind. Die skulpturale Wirkung des Baukörpers wird durch die durchgehende Verkleidung aus sandfarbenem Klinker unterstrichen. Die geometrische Gliederung durch das Ziegelformat wird durch die ornamentale Ausgestaltung einzelner Ziegelflächen durchbrochen, welche die Fensterflächen, Eingangsbereiche und Symbole auf subtile Weise hervorheben.
Das zentrale Gestaltungselement des in homogenem Weiß gestalteten Kircheninnenraums ist die natürliche Belichtung, die durch verschiedene Fensteranordnungen unterschiedlichen Lichtstimmungen erzeugt. Sowohl die Orgel als auch die Glocken des prominent in die südwestliche Gebäudeecke integrierten Kirchturms stammen aus aufgegeben Kirchenstandorten und finden eine Nachnutzung im Gebäude.

I was saving some insect shots to post with an insect-related piece I have coming up. But I got distracted and wrote about doves instead, so here's an insect shot anyway. Doves coming soon. My son requested I do a "Wednesday wild" feature in the "stories you write about me and nature." Not a bad idea, actually.
Happy to find a pair of migrating scaup at our park today, swimming in a pool of water from the melting ice.
Sorry for so many similar photos. It's been years since I have seen any of these these there. Some not the best quality but saving anyway. Will replace if I get better ones should they stay longer.

RANT: Utah went on Summer Time today. We keep talking about eliminating this endless daylight saving time cycle of spring ahead and fall back in the vein hope that somehow cutting one end of the blanket off and sewing it on the other end somehow gives us more blanket. This may have made sense back in the 1700's when Ben Franklin first suggested it and candles were the only source of light and crops had to be harvested, planted, and animals cared for. Most people have come around to wanting to either stay on standard time or stay on summer time but despite all the talk nothing ever happens. Polls show that the vast majority of people in Utah want Utah to be on permanent summer time but the legislature despite having several bills introduced seems unable to act. OK rant over now.
The groynes on the beach at Boscombe that stop the sand being washed away. An opportunity to use a slow shutter speed and get a long exposure using my tripod and an ND Filter.
Madeira Terrace, Madeira Walk, lift tower and related buildings were built between 1890 and 1897 to the design of the Brighton Borough Engineer Peter Lockwood. Over the years the structure has rusted and begun to fall in places. In 2012 the Council began to fence of the fallen sections until structural engineers said the entire length of the structure needed to be fenced off. It has remained abandoned and derelict since then but a charity was established to with a campaign to 'Save Madeira Terraces'., so far raising approx. £26,000 towards the £millions the work will cost. This year work has at last begun to restore 41 of the arches.

I've been visiting this place known locally as the "Graff Factory" for a couple of years and in all that time, the Street Fighter graff pieces remained intact and untagged. Tonight I found it mostly ruined by a graff "artist" who is nowhere near as good. It won't be long before Scorpion is gone altogether...
We bumped into a couple from Three Hills who we hit it off with on our visit to Ixtapa. They were staying at the same Condo (they own 2 suites) and are also in the dog business like us.
Valina was more than willing to let me do my first swimming pool photo shoot and in the Infinity Pool to boot. There was no way that I was going to miss out on the opportunity to float, take photos, and use my Fuji X-A1 and the 35mm f/1.4 lens in low light.

We were visiting Spello, a medieval walled town of pre-Roman origins preserving three Roman gates and many other remains from the Roman age. Stone upon stone, in such ancient towns every inch is colonized and civilized. Houses, churches, palaces and towers are huddled together like male Emperor penguins in a colony during incubation. As you are strolling around, breathing with the breath of history, you should expect some suprise at every bending - a flight of steps running up towards the bright colours of a walled garden, an enticing alley carved out of the crowded buildings, a small curiosity shop or a brewery where you can eat some local food while tasting their (usually quite good) handmade beer...
Here I have captured a typical view of Spello (Fonte del Mastro street, looking downwards). The small church at the dead center of the framing, suppressed after the unification of Italy in the 19th century, is now home to the European Studies Center of Medieval Music "Adolfo Broegg" (sorry, in spite of the international vocation of the Center, the site is almost entirely in Italian).
But there is even more than this to Umbria - more than simply this flavourful cocktail of nature, history, and art. One of the things I love of Umbria is the Umbrian people. The Umbrians are generally friendly, even congenial, and they enjoy taking (or rather tasting) life at an easy pace - which is particularly refreshing for people like us, coming from antipodean places where every day is just a new damn hectic day. This quiet, typical view of Spello shows just a minimal touch of human presence: a man climbing the steep paved street on his Vespa scooter - admittedly only a negligible bit faster than walking. But then, I am sure that it was just a way to save his breath for something more important :-)...
I have obtained this picture by blending a "fake" (i.e. from a single RAW file) exposure bracketing [-1.0/0/+1.0 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot).
