Dan and I met up with our pals from interchangeableparts on Saturday at Triumph in Princeton. Which we now frequent because of the wedding. And i'm okay with that. All four of us ordered samplers (our poor waitress) and it was awesome. It's always so much fun to hang out with them - we laugh so, so much. And then I bought too much at Paper Source because of all the beer. (And I'm also okay with that.)
This sampler was stitched by 12-year-old Emma Harrison in 1881. Emma was born in Northend Warwickshire. The sampler is in the possession of her granddaughter Mavis Potter.

I was working away on this sampler when it became obvious I wasn't going to be able to finish it. Not enough thread. Since I am in a village in Larsen Bay and I bought the thread in Seattle, I'm going to have to wait until I get home. Oh well, I'll finish my kid's scarf that he's been waiting for.

Sampler, 1786
Made by Mary Miller
Pemberton, Burlington County, New Jersey
Silk and linen
Mary Miller’s sampler reflects an optimistic outlook on death. Her verse suggests an awareness that this needlework will preserve her name long after her days on earth have come to an end. Simple, multi-colored birds are present throughout the work. The border is meant to symbolize strawberry vines, a popular sampler motif.

We had a great lunch at Bridgeport Brewpub and Bakery, www.bridgeportbrew.com/about/index.php . I had a sampler of beers. Desmond had a pint of the Ropewalk. My favorites were the ESB, Blue Heron and Black Strap Stout. They had nice vegetarian selections.
Sampler, 1833
Made by Ellen Young (1820-c. 1910)
Petersburg, Upper Township, Cape May County, New Jersey
Silk and linen
Birds are the stylistic centerpiece of this sampler. All of the bird shapes are the same, but differ in color. This suggests the tremendous color diversity in the world of birds. Dogs and flower baskets complete the design. Thirteen-year-old Ellen Young made the needlework under the instruction of Harriet Ann Wales. The teacher’s name appears at right. “Preceptress” is another word for teacher.
