Eldgjá is a volcano and a canyon in Iceland. Eldgjá and the Katla volcano are part of the same volcanic system in the south of the country.
Situated between Landmannalaugar and Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Eldgjá is the largest volcanic canyon in the world, approx. 40 km long, 270 m deep and 600 m wide at its greatest.
The first documented eruption in 939 was the largest flood basalt in historic time. The areal extent of the lava is around 800 km2. An estimated 18 km3 of magma poured out of the earth. Evidence from tree rings from around the Northern Hemisphere indicated that the eruption in 939 caused the summer of 940 to be one of the coolest summers in 1500 years. Summer average temperatures in places as disparate as Central Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, Alaska, and Central Asia were 2°C lower than normal.
In March 2018, a team of medieval historians and scientists from the University of Cambridge suggested that a famous medieval Icelandic poem, Vǫluspá, estimated to date from 961, was a roughly contemporary chronicle of Eldgjá's eruption in 939. The researchers suggested that the dramatic imagery of Eldgiá's eruption was purposefully invoked in order to accelerate the Christianization of Iceland.
There is a waterfall named Ófærufoss within the canyon. A natural bridge across the waterfall vanished in 1993, reportedly due to excess water from melting ice.
The northern part of Eldgjá, including Ófærufoss, and surrounding areas, have been a part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2011.

O.k. Yet another old rotting building. This is not a barn, I don’t think. I believe it’s a Feed barn and a Trappers Dry House. Or whatever they are called. It has Four rooms and a feed stall. A place to fatten up a Cow before…..Well you know. And a big room for hanging skins to dry. There’s still a deer skin on the outside above the door. I remember when it looked like a deer skin. First time I have ever got a close look at it. In the summer its completely covered in vines and growth .Hard to shoot because of all the growth around it now. but I tried.

•TUC Midlands and Stand Up To Racism to hold event in the same hotel that Enoch Powell gave his infamous Rivers of Blood speech
•Leading figures from politics, sport, unions and civic society to attend special event
Ex-West Brom player, and member of the famous ‘Three Degrees’ Brendon Batson will address a special event to mark the 50th anniversary of Enoch Powell’s infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech at the Midland Hotel in Birmingham. The event will be held in the same hotel that Enoch Powell used for his speech in 1968. Bringing together a wide spectrum of West Midlands society, the event will be showcasing how the diverse communities of the midlands reject Powell’s vision of ‘rivers of blood’ and instead have turned to ‘rivers of love’.
Eleanor Smith, the BAME female MP, who now holds Enoch Powell’s old seat will give a key note address, outlining how Birmingham, and the West Midlands, has rejected Powell’s vision and embraced tolerance and divergence.
Also addressing the event will be Birmingham City Council leader, Ian Ward, Shabana Mahmood MP and Preet Gill MP. Roger McKenzie, UNISON’s Assistant General Secretary and originally from the West Midlands will also make a speech.
Either side of comments from the key note speakers there will be contributions from representatives of the many differing communities across Birmingham, including a poem from the present Birmingham Poet Laureate Matt Windle.
TUC Midlands Regional Secretary, Lee Barron, said:
“It’s clear that Enoch Powell lost. We mark the 50th anniversary of his infamous speech in celebration and appreciation of the wonderful diversity of our region. Powell’s vision of ‘rivers of blood’ has clearly been rejected as our communities have instead embraced a vision of ‘rivers of love’ in creating a vibrant, tolerant and open society that is welcoming to all people.”
Brian O’Sullivan, Birmingham SUTR said:
“Powell spoke of immigration as an evil and used his speech to try and whip up racial hatred. But here we are in 2018 and people from different communities and religions work and live together and we will not let racism divide us’.
