This buck is following a doe that wants no part of him. He paused and displayed a Flehman response to detect estrus in the air and the chase was on again. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

I guess we are still in pre-rut, but watched this buck make three scrapes this morning. He is getting in the mood. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep in the rut.

With the fall rut ready to start this white-tail buck is hooked on a nearby doe and is oblivious to all else. All he cares about is her, all she cares about (for now) is eating.

His neck is no longer swollen and he's noticeably thin after the rigors of the Fall rut. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

Red Deer stags on the Chatsworth Estate, Derbyshire. Several large and muscular stags are guarding their harems and warning off other stags but overall the autumn rut so far is a low-key affair. Probably due to prolonged warm weather through September into October.

After several years of trying to force myself to use my 70-200 ii during the rut and failing miserably, it looks like the new 100-400 ii is helping me to change that. Having used the 100-400 now for foxes and the deer for a week or so I am definitely a convert. I don't worry about the DOF to much and appreciate the flexibility. Focusing is good and sharpness is good (although it should be at f5.6). It's much better to use than the 70-200 ii + 1.4x iii and at the equivalent focal lengths, even stopping the 70-200/1.4 combo down, the 100-400 is sharper across the picture. I would thoroughly recommend trying one.
