called in on way to lakes as part of a scouting mission for a bit later in the year water still very low
An unspoilt beauty spot easily reached from the market town of Appleby, with an impressive waterfall, ford, millwheel and natural wildlife.
As the Cross Timber oaks take on a mutted palette of gold and russet, there is a tension in the air. It hasn't been here for months But, the whitetails recognize it instantly. The fall rut is here. Time to plant seed for spring's fawn crop and the deer woods are full of drama. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
In case you're wondering, I was the first to blink...

One of the most scenic (and easily accessible) of all Cumbrian waterfalls, Rutter Force is a horseshoe-shaped waterfall on Hoff Beck, near Appleby-in-Westmorland, in the beautiful Eden Valley.
Immediately beside the waterfall is an old mill with a restored waterwheel. The mill is no longer a working mill, but has been converted into holiday accommodation.
The best view of Rutter Force is from a narrow footbridge across the beck, which has been constructed a few feet upstream of a ford for cars. The setting is superb, and it is well worth a visit.
The earliest record of the mill at Rutter Force comes from 1579 when the waterfall was used to power the corn mill. The mill continued in operation until the repeal of the Corn Laws of 1832 made milling unprofitable. It was converted to serve as a bobbin mill, and later a sawmill.
Its is now Holiday Accommodation.
It's official: I am in a rain rut! Wet flowers seem to be all I have to post. Whatever. One of my new plantings from this spring.
"Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live!"
-- Bob Marley
HDR processed shot from the long backdoor entry driveway (used to be the main one) at Saint-John's Monastery (Sint-Jansberg klooster) in Zelem Halen, Belgium.
I personally liked the almost invisible road uphill's vanishing point which is in fact the final turn to the right and towards the monastery backyard.
This morning, we watched this buck start a scrape. He scraped the ground, urinated, and pawed the dirt to mix his scent with it. Then he rubbed scent from his orbital glands on the branch above the scrape. Bucks always select a scrape site that has a branch above it. Later, we watched a larger buck come along and put scent over this buck's. Hope this scrape site stays active.
This buck, full of testosterone, is working a scrape, urinating on the ground and rubbing scent from his orbital glands on leaves above. He was fired up this morning, and a few minutes later, engaged another buck in a prolonged stare-down, followed by a brief battle before the smaller buck ran and was pursued by this buck.
Our beautiful world, pass it on.
From time to time I have someone ask me what the "rut" is. The fall whitetail rut is one of the most exciting and active times of the year for deer hunters, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the behavior of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). The rut is essentially the deer breeding season, and it involves a series of behavioral changes and physical interactions between bucks and does, driven by hormonal shifts. It's an effective method to support the species, but there is not a lot of romance involved. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
Went along to Bushy Park, and the rut has started!!
so many 'big boys' roaring and in close vicinity of each other
I was working in Appleby earlier this month, so on the way home, took a little detour to Rutter Falls in Hoff Beck. There is a ford to cross the road, and a little wooden footbridge. This was taken from the footbridge. The old mill is a now a holiday cottage.
Many people come to Cumbria for the Lake District, and drive straight through the Eden Valley without realising there's so much to see and do.

Cows make these ruts in mountain pastures in the Alps, if you let generation after generation of them graze freely. This pasture is on the slopes of Mt. Rigi, above Lake Lucerne, Canton Lucerne, Switzerland.
