Ah yes, the white-tailed rut has begun. Eight sightings of bucks in three days (not sure how many individual deer). Photos of four of those encounters follow. This was the second buck; the first was an inconsequential yearling.
This one was too close, but I knew he wasn't going to jump a fence from a standing position to come toward me, and in fact he went the other way after a doe two or three minutes after I took this photo and a few others.
Five hiding Red Deer hinds.. This was the best I could manage given the vegetation and wariness of the group. Even at 600 mm i struggled to get close enough to photograph this years rutting activities as i didn't wish to disturb them in any way. I was hiding behind a stone walled earth bank as well as the bracken to give them their much needed privacy.

This shot was taken during the fallow deer rut in the Forest of Dean. I have a tendency with my wildlife shots to try to get as close to the subject as I can. Quite often though, I think it makes for a better picture to show the wildlife in the context of the surroundings and habitat in which it lives... which is also a long winded way of trying to cover the fact that I alerted these deer long before I could get any nearer to them.
Je me rendais à mon affut vers les 17 heure et un brocard a approché. Je me suis plaqué à un arbre et l'ai photographié.
'game camera'.......four different glands on the head alone allow for communication among the whitetail population and during the rut they are in overtime !

The Fallow Deer rut has started at Dunham Massey with the bucks starting to mark out their territory. Got a few nice shots in the early morning mist and cold earlier this week
rut is a frenzy of activity......bulls fighting and trying to maintain their harems while chasing off young bulls. The 'meowing' you hear is the sound cow/calves make when calling each other...of course, bugling are the bulls trying to establish dominance. This is in the Rocky Mountain National forest.....sorry about the awful backlighting but it is what it is !
notice the fencing off to the left, the 'forestry division' attempts to occassionally fence in small areas in order for the natural vegetation to regenerate....after a few years they may move the fencing to a different area on these stream beds...
This mature whitetail buck would normally stay back in the timber to travel down this edge. But, this morning there is a doe that his scent tells him is ready. Caution is thrown to the wind. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

The Fall rut is a big event in the whitetail community. This little six-point decided he'd get in on it, too. He was chasing this doe incessantly, clueless to the fact that he is just wearing her down so one of the mature bucks can breed her. Maybe his time will come, but not this year. Our beautiful world, pass it on.
