this is being posted for my dear flckr friend "Ute", this bull is marking his territory using the glands located near his eyes, listen to his competitors in the background....early rut these bulls will use wallows in order to maximize their body odor to help draw in the ladies which accounts for his hide being damp and dirty.
3 Bull Moose - Indian Peaks Wilderness, Ward, CO
A couple weeks ago, my fiancé and I experienced the most magical wildlife encounter we've ever seen. We hiked up to Blue Lake in the Indian Peaks for sunrise. We had a decent sunrise, thanks to only 2 minutes of light. It wasn't until our hike back when the magic really began. As we crested a point overlooking this gorgeous valley, we noticed 2 bulls next to this small lake. We stopped in our tracks and found a nice spot to sit and watch. I immediately pulled out my camera and the long lens and began shooting. As I was connecting my lens to my camera, I heard my fiancé go "wowww!" I looked up to see this giant bull coming out of the trees. We watched closely as the big bull wandered over to the other two. The smaller (but not so small) two had been sparring a bit and butting heads. Nothing intense, just a little messing around. In the photo you can see the two smaller ones stopped in their tracks and looking at the big bull heading towards them. The big guy came over and stuck himself right between the two as if to say "break it up!". The large bull then stuck his head into the mix and all three of them had their antlers intertwined. We assumed that the big one was trying to show the others how to do it properly. It was absolutely incredible to watch them interact. A few moments after, they continued to forage by themselves as they wandered down the valley. We decided to follow along down the trail and we were able to find them again from a viewpoint farther down the trail. It was a special morning and it must have been the biggest moose we've ever seen.
I am getting excited for fall to fully arrive. It seems to be here a bit early in CO due to drought conditions all summer long. Excited to see everyones fall images. As always, thanks for reading!
Bull elk spend the summer eating almost constantly to build up their strength, body mass and antlers in preparation for the fall rut. This guy was clearly taking that task seriously. On the day this shot was taken, he still had nearly another month to bulk up. He should be a serious contender come September.

In a break from proper photography I joined some wildlife photographer friends for a trip to Bradgate Park to look at the rutting activities. Nothing very exciting happened but we had a great breakfast.

With often violent conclusion, the highly charged rut sees the male of the species vie for a chance to mate with as many females as possible. In October the males have already made efforts to intimidate their rivals and attract the mature females.
When bellowing and barrel-chested posturing fails to settle the score, the bucks lock antlers for the frenzy of the autumn rut. It can be very violent but doesn’t actually happen too often. The deer don’t want to fight, because they could cause themselves a lot of damage. Only when two evenly matched males encounter one another can there be violent conflict.
The rut is all about the right to win control of as many females as possible, so the stronger males can mate and ensure their genes are passed down to the next generation.

The rut should be in full swing right now, but this buck's tarsal glands are not flowing. He was actively chasing a doe, though. We saw several bucks this morning, most inferior young bucks. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

"The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. The trite subjects of human efforts, possessions, outward success, luxury have always seemed to me contemptible."

A farm field road in Madison County, Alabama on a January day after a lot of rain. I was trying out a forty year old polarizing filter that I found in my collection that just happened to fit my current lens. I think it is probably time to buy a new one.
Hundreds of wagon trains passed though this area (mostly from 1820 to 1860) on the way to Oregon. Amazing that they could find the same place over and over again to create such ruts in the ground.
It's always fun to see the bighorn sheep during rut. When the rams aren't chasing ewes around, they are often tussling with each other, kicking each other, and head-butting. This little video clip shows just a small sampling of the classic rut behavior. If you're interested in photographing bighorn sheep, join us this winter on our photo tour.
