Day 176 of 365: "Rusty Cage"
Perhaps because a couple of nights ago I got in stuck in my head that I wanted to shoot blossoms, today I wanted to shoot rust; the polar opposite. I develop collision repair training for a living and see different types of corrosion often at work. I wanted to capture the texture, the colors, and the way some of it kind of "bleeds." I shot about 4 images on my lunch break and decided I wanted to work with these textures tonight to see if I could create some type of interesting abstract, minimalistic photograph using color and composition.

Rivets on the side of a former LP&N RR crane deck. Crane body is gone, leaving just a heavy duty flatcar.
To bird along Kendall Station, we parked our car, and then walked out a little ways before turning around and heading back. On the way back we spotted a pair of Rusty Blackbirds feeding in a shallow pool. We waited around very quietly, and eventually the birds came around and into the sun for some very close photos. They walked right by me without paying me any mind. They were completely focused on flipping over little leaves that were sunk underwater and getting little somethings from beneath.
Sadly, this species has declined tremendously in the past decade or so, and so is at risk.
This Rusty was a leaf flinging champion....and quite good at finding "delicacies" at least for the avian palate :)

I went back to the place where I spotted the Rusty Blackbirds the day before. I found a couple in the same area and was able to get some more shots.
Too cold to start a fire
Im burning diesel burning dinosaur bones
I'll take the river down to still water
And ride a pack of dogs
These are bad photos, but I'm putting them up as record shots for a Rusty Blackbird seen on 4/7/11 at Donaldson Park, Middlesex County, NJ.
