Trakai Island Castle (Lithuanian: Trakų salos pilis) is an island castle located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The castle is sometimes referred to as "Little Marienburg". The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430. Trakai was one of the main centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

Trakai Island Castle was built in several phases. During the first phase, in the second half of the 14th century, the castle was constructed on the largest of three lake islands by the order of Grand Duke Kęstutis. The construction of Trakai Island Castle was related to the expansion and strengthening of the Trakai Peninsula Castle. Kęstutis moved his main residence and his treasury to the Island Castle. The castle suffered major damage during an attack by the Teutonic Knights in 1377. After the assassination of Kęstutis, a power struggle between Jogaila and Vytautas the Great for the title of Grand Duke of Lithuania began. The castle was besieged by both sides. Soon after the reconciliation between Jogaila and Vytautas, the second phase of construction started and continued until 1409. This phase is regarded as the major development in the history of the castle. Apparently, during the truce with the Teutonic Order, the construction works were supervised by the Order's stonemason Radike, four years before the Battle of Grunwald.

During the second phase, two wings were added, and on the southern side a 6 story (35 m. high) donjon - see note - was built. The donjon had movable gates which separated the palace from the forecastle. The donjon was used for several functions; besides serving as another defensive structure, it had a chapel and living quarters. It was linked to the multistory Ducal Palace, which had an inner yard. The inner yard had wooden galleries, which ran around the inner wall; these galleries were used to access various support facilities without going inside the palace itself. The entire southern wing of the southern palace was used for the Ducal Hall. This hall was around 10 x 21 metres in size, and only the Upper Palace in the Vilnius Castle Complex managed to surpass it. The Ducal Hall has preserved some of its original décor. The principal construction material was so-called red Gothic bricks. Stone blocks were used only in the foundations and the upper parts of buildings, towers and walls. The castle was decorated in a variety of ways, including glazed roof tiling, burned bricks, and stained glass windows. Its overall style after the second construction phase could be described as Gothic with some Romanesque features.

The expansion of the forecastle in the early 15th century marked the third phase of Trakai's development. The walls of the forecastle were strengthened to a thickness of 2.5 metres and raised with additional firing galleries. Three major defensive towers - clearly visible here, hehe - were constructed on the corners. The southwestern tower was also used as a prison. The top story of the towers was designed for soldiers and housed a large number of cannons. A main gatehouse - behind the boats - was also constructed which, along with the Ducal Palace donjon, had movable gates. The gatehouse was reinforced with additional sections for firing galleries. Near the inner walls several buildings were constructed, including stables, kitchens, and other support structures. When the castle was undergoing this expansion in the 15th century, the water level of Lake Galvė was several metres higher than it is today. The castle builders took advantage of this by separating the Ducal Palace and the forecastle with a moat, just wide enough for small boats to sail through. They were connected by gates that could be raised in case of an enemy attack.

Carved capitals on the limestone arches surrounding the west entrance to the church at l’Abbaye royale de Fontevraud, or Fontevrault -- Abbaye Notre-Dame -- in the village of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye (in the département of Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire region, in west-central France), on a mostly clear day in mid-October (2016). The pale, silvery-grey to near-white tufa limestone (in French, tuffeau or tufeau) is characteristic of buildings in this area.

Founded in 1101 by Robert d'Arbrissel (1047-1117), the abbey was initially intended for both women and men but became an abbey exclusively for women. As its name suggests, for centuries it was associated with royalty, including abbesses with royal connections and other royal or aristocratic residents. Among the most famous was Aliénor d'Aquitaine, known in English as Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122?-1204), who retired and was buried there. Like many French religious establishments, in 1792 Fontevrault was suppressed by Revolutionaries. Napoleon I then established a grim prison on the site in 1804, which did not close until 1963, when restoration began.

Today, the abbey site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is open to visitors for daily visits, as well as hosting many cultural events. In addition to the Romanesque church and cloisters, it features elements including a hotel (in the former Prieuré St-Lazare / St-Lazare Priory); the gatehouse (ca. 1785); a converted 18th-century stables; the former homes of abbots and abbesses; a large medieval kitchen with "pepper pot" towers; three eating places (at least as of 2016); and gardens.

This location was historically in the Saumurois area of Anjou, near its borders with the Touraine to the east and Poitou to the south. Today, it is within the Parc naturel régional Loire-Anjou-Touraine (Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park) as well as the Vallée de la Loire UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Přední Kopanina)

The Rotunda of St. Mary Magdalene in Prague-Přední Kopanina is a Romanesque rotunda, standing on the very northwestern edge of Prague, in the middle of the Přední Kopanina district. The rotunda falls under the administration of the Roman Catholic parish in Tuchoměřice.

The unplastered building of the church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene is led out of small marl blocks, probably mined directly from the local quarry, which is still a well-known source of this material. The central part of the church is a round nave, the interior of which measures over five meters across, on the east side a semicircular apse joins the nave, on the west side a slender tower with an approximately square floor plan. Research in 1983 showed that this layout of the church is original, from the time of its construction, which is not documented in more detail, but is generally placed in the first half of the 12th century.

The presence of the portal on the floor of the south wall of the tower, interpreted as the entrance to the porch, may then indicate for this period the existence of a manor house in the vicinity of this side of the church.

A rectangular extension was later attached to the south side of the rotunda, which currently serves as the main nave, while the rotunda became a presbytery and the tower serves as a sacristy. The functional arrangement of the church is thus today, in contrast to the usual orientation to the east, rotated by 90 degrees.

The current appearance of the church of St. Mary Magdalene is the result of modern adaptations. After the collapse of the vault in 1779, the rotunda was left to its fate for a long time. It was not until 1852 to 1858 that an extensive renovation was carried out according to the project of Karel Wiesenfeld (1802-1870), a long-time professor of civil engineering at the Prague Polytechnic (this is the only case of Wiesenfeld's own construction work). The vault was then restored with a wooden structure instead of a stone one, the tower was noticeably raised, new window openings were made (only two windows are considered unchanged, medieval today, one on the ground floor of the west side of the tower, the other on the southeast side of the apse).

The marl altar relief with a scene of the Crucifixion, of uncertain age, perhaps from the second half of the 17th century, stands out from the furniture of the church. It is also worth mentioning the painting Adoration of the Magi with the side figures of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila by Josef Hellich from 1861 and the painting of St. Mary Magdalene by Vilém Kandler. The Gothic sandstone baptistery has been preserved from the older equipment. The stained glass windows date from the 1990s. So far, the last reconstruction of the building was completed in 2000.

Wikipedia

St. Mary's Church is a Lutheran church in Sigtuna, not far from Stockholm, Sweden. It is a fine example of Brick Gothic architecture in Sweden.

The church was built by the Dominican order as their convent church, and construction began in the 1230s. The church was inaugurated in 1247, but was probably not finished until 1255, when archbishop Jarler was entombed in the church.

The church was built as part of a larger monastic complex. Of this convent nothing remains today; it was closed during the Reformation and the bricks used as building materials, e.g. at Svartsjö Palace and Venngarn Castle. The church is the only medieval church in Sigtuna to have survived the Reformation.

During the 1280s, the church was expanded and partly remade. No major alterations were then made of the church until a renovation in 1904-05. The church was again renovated in the 1960s.

The church is built of brick in a transitional style, between Romanesque and Gothic. It is the earliest known brick church in the area around Lake Mälaren. The church is built as a hall church with two aisles and a central nave.

Internally, it was decorated with frescos, some of which are medieval and some of which are reproductions from the 1904-05 renovation. Externally, the façade is decorated with blind arches.

Second time.

It is pretty windy.

The Pasquareccia bell.

A special note about bell 5:

The name Pasquareccia comes from Easter, because it is used to ring especially on Easter day. However, this bell is older than the chamber bell itself, and comes from the tower of Vergata, in the Palazzo Pretorio in Pisa, where it was called La Giustizia (The Justice). The bell was used to announce the capital executions of criminals and traitors, including Count Ugolino, in 1289.

At the end of the 18th century a new bell was installed in the belfry to replace the broken bell, the Pasquareccia bell.

I'll be back soon.

It's a 2-day goodbye.

Details best viewed in Original Size.

According to a site sign, the medieval elements that are incorporated into this cloister all come from the abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa (near Perpignan, France), constructed under its Abbot Gregory 1130 and 1146. The capitals are vigorously carved: the planes are simple and clearly defined; and the decorative and figural motifs concentrated at the corners, provide strong visual support for the abaci and arcading above them. In addition to the two unadorned examples, the capitals in this particular arcade are variously decorated with figures blowing horns, simple beasts with half-swallowed men in their mouths and conjoined lions devouring men. The eight-sided fountain in the center dates back to the 13th century and comes from the nearby monastery of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines. The monastery was sacked in the 17th century and fallen into ruin by the 19th century. As reconstructed here, the cloister is about one quarter the size of the original, but the proportions run approximately the same. The modern stone required for reconstruction was obtained from the original 12th century quarry.

The Pfarrkirche St. Severus -- Parish Church of St Severus -- in the town of Boppard (Rheinland-Pfalz / Rhineland-Palatinate, in southwestern Germany), seen from the main square on a clear afternoon in mid-October (2006).

The Marktplatz, or Market Square, is located just back from the waterfront along the Rhine; it is lined with buildings featuring characteristic half-timbering, or Fachwerk. The St-Severus Kirche is a twin-towered Romanesque church of the 12th/13th century.

Boppard is located along the Middle Rhine (Mittelrhein) gorge, where the valley narrows in a particularly scenic manner between Bingen and Koblenz. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
