Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Přední Kopanina)

The Rotunda of St. Mary Magdalene in Prague-Přední Kopanina is a Romanesque rotunda, standing on the very northwestern edge of Prague, in the middle of the Přední Kopanina district. The rotunda falls under the administration of the Roman Catholic parish in Tuchoměřice.

The unplastered building of the church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene is led out of small marl blocks, probably mined directly from the local quarry, which is still a well-known source of this material. The central part of the church is a round nave, the interior of which measures over five meters across, on the east side a semicircular apse joins the nave, on the west side a slender tower with an approximately square floor plan. Research in 1983 showed that this layout of the church is original, from the time of its construction, which is not documented in more detail, but is generally placed in the first half of the 12th century.

The presence of the portal on the floor of the south wall of the tower, interpreted as the entrance to the porch, may then indicate for this period the existence of a manor house in the vicinity of this side of the church.

A rectangular extension was later attached to the south side of the rotunda, which currently serves as the main nave, while the rotunda became a presbytery and the tower serves as a sacristy. The functional arrangement of the church is thus today, in contrast to the usual orientation to the east, rotated by 90 degrees.

The current appearance of the church of St. Mary Magdalene is the result of modern adaptations. After the collapse of the vault in 1779, the rotunda was left to its fate for a long time. It was not until 1852 to 1858 that an extensive renovation was carried out according to the project of Karel Wiesenfeld (1802-1870), a long-time professor of civil engineering at the Prague Polytechnic (this is the only case of Wiesenfeld's own construction work). The vault was then restored with a wooden structure instead of a stone one, the tower was noticeably raised, new window openings were made (only two windows are considered unchanged, medieval today, one on the ground floor of the west side of the tower, the other on the southeast side of the apse).

The marl altar relief with a scene of the Crucifixion, of uncertain age, perhaps from the second half of the 17th century, stands out from the furniture of the church. It is also worth mentioning the painting Adoration of the Magi with the side figures of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila by Josef Hellich from 1861 and the painting of St. Mary Magdalene by Vilém Kandler. The Gothic sandstone baptistery has been preserved from the older equipment. The stained glass windows date from the 1990s. So far, the last reconstruction of the building was completed in 2000.

A group of tourists rests on the steps of the Romanesque portal of the Church of San Martín in Salamanca, a building founded in 1103 and erected in the 12th century, considered the second most important in the city after the Old Cathedral. The structure is notable for its main portal, adorned with multiple concentric arches featuring geometric and vegetal details, as well as decorated archivolts culminating in an upper niche with the relief of St. Martin on horseback, an emblematic scene of his patronage. The upper tympanum preserves hagiographic frescoes and the side columns, ending in historiated capitals, support the whole, whose façade is composed of Villamayor stone, giving it the typical golden hue. The monument, which has faced several changes and stability problems over time, was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.

The nave of the church at l’Abbaye royale de Fontevraud, or Fontevrault -- Abbaye Notre-Dame -- in the village of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye (in the département of Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire region, in west-central France).

On a mostly clear day in mid-October (2016), sunlight was filtering through the stained glass at the upper left (north); the additional touches of colour projected onto the right-hand, southern wall were created by visitors using an interactive panel. The pale, silvery-grey to near-white tufa limestone (in French, tuffeau or tufeau) is characteristic of buildings in this area and itself helps to enhance the light. This view looks eastwards towards the altar.

Founded in 1101 by Robert d'Arbrissel (1047-1117), the abbey was initially intended for both women and men but became an abbey exclusively for women. As its name suggests, for centuries it was associated with royalty, including abbesses with royal connections and other royal or aristocratic residents. Among the most famous was Aliénor d'Aquitaine, known in English as Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122?-1204), who retired and was buried there. Like many French religious establishments, in 1792 Fontevrault was suppressed by Revolutionaries. Napoleon I then established a grim prison on the site in 1804, which did not close until 1963, when restoration began. Today, the abbey site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is open to visitors for daily visits, as well as hosting many cultural events. In addition to the Romanesque church and cloisters, it features elements including a hotel (in the former Prieuré St-Lazare / St-Lazare Priory); the gatehouse (ca. 1785); a converted 18th-century stables; the former homes of abbots and abbesses; a large medieval kitchen with "pepper pot" towers; three eating places (at least as of 2016); and gardens.

Fontevraud l'Abbaye was historically in the Saumurois area of Anjou, near its borders with the Touraine to the east and Poitou to the south. Today, it is within the Parc naturel régional Loire-Anjou-Touraine (Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park) as well as the Vallée de la Loire UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Saturday 14th of August 2021 and a trip to the closest Cathedral to me in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Cathedral was built in 1180AD and paid for my a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for a time and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls.

St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church is a medieval Spanish monastery cloister which was built in the town of Sacramenia in Segovia, Spain, in the 12th century but dismantled in the 20th century and shipped to New York City in the United States. It was eventually reassembled at 16711 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida, where it is now an Episcopal church and tourist attraction called Ancient Spanish Monastery. It is the oldest European-built structure in the Western Hemisphere.

Christ Church is the oldest building in continuous use in Dublin. The story of the cathedral begins almost a thousand years ago, when Viking King, Sitriuc Silkenbeard, build the first church on this site in about 1030. The Anglo-Normans rebuilt the cathedral in the 12th and 13th centuries and this is largely the building we see today, though it was heavily restored in the 1870s.

Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.

Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the 12th century and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174.

The beautiful cathedral, Bishops Palace and Gardens at Wells, Somerset, England. There has been a church on this site since 700 AD with the cathedral being built 1175 AD.

Around the year 1180, Jean de Gisors, a wealthy Norman merchant and Lord of the Manor of Titchfield, gave land in his new town of Portsmouth to the Augustinian canons of Southwick Priory so that they could build a chapel "to the Glorious Honour of the Martyr Thomas of Canterbury, one time Archbishop, on (my) land which is called Sudewede, the island of Portsea" It was given so that they could build a chapel dedicated to the honour of St Thomas of Canterbury, who was assassinated and martyred ten years earlier. This chapel was to become, in turn, a parish church in the 14th century and then a cathedral in the 20th century.

This beautifully preserved stretch of townhouses along Massachusetts Avenue NW in Washington, D.C.’s Embassy Row district is a masterclass in late 19th-century urban architecture. Anchored by a pair of commanding round turrets, the buildings showcase the grandeur of Richardsonian Romanesque and Beaux-Arts Revival styles that flourished in the capital during the Gilded Age.

From the rusticated brownstone base to the soaring red-brick façades, each residence tells its own story through detail: arched entries, fluted stone columns, intricate wood cornices, and jewel-box dormers. The central turret—with its conical roof and checkerboard banding—is an especially eye-catching landmark, reminiscent of both castle keeps and Parisian mansard houses. Deeply recessed windows and carved stone doorframes hint at the wealth and ambition of their original occupants—many of whom were industrialists, diplomats, or early federal bureaucrats.

One of the most notable buildings in this row now houses the Republic of Zimbabwe’s Embassy, identifiable by the flag flying proudly above its entrance. The embassy’s building retains its original Romanesque charm with red sandstone, a sweeping curved bay window, and rounded Roman arches—a nod to both strength and permanence.

Walking this corridor today feels like stepping back into a golden age of D.C. architecture. For lovers of history, urbanism, or stonework craftsmanship, this block is a must-see—and a dream to photograph, especially in the soft morning light.

Created in the 14th century to preserve the preparatory drawings of the frescoes of the monumental cemetery, the Museo delle Sinopie is a magical and precious place, both because of the masterpieces that are kept there, and because of the place itself. The organization of the interior consists of a system of platforms connected to each other, with different heights, supported by metallic structures anchored to the ground and suspended by means of tie rods.

The beautiful cathedral, Bishops Palace and Gardens at Wells, Somerset, England. There has been a church on this site since 700 AD with the cathedral being built 1175 AD.

Wells Cathedral from the Bishops Gardens. The Cathedral was built in 1175, but there had been a church on this site since the year 766. It's a beautiful cathedral to visit and the Bishops Palace and Palace Gardens are beautiful too. I have posted the link to the cathedrals Wiki page below for those interested.
