Looking down at part of the entrance to Hintze Hall in the Natural History Museum.
In 1864 Francis Fowke, the architect who designed the Royal Albert Hall and parts of the Victoria and Albert Museum, won a competition to design the Natural History Museum.
When he unexpectedly died a year later, the relatively unknown Alfred Waterhouse took over and came up with a new plan for the South Kensington site.
Waterhouse used terracotta for the entire building as this material was more resistant to Victorian London's harsh climate.
The result is one of Britain’s most striking examples of Romanesque architecture, which is considered a work of art in its own right and has become one of London's most iconic landmarks.

Description of L.A.'s wonderful and famed Bradbury Building in the heart of downtown! Where Blade Runner was filmed as well as 500 Days of Summer among others!
Christ Church is the oldest building in continuous use in Dublin. The story of the cathedral begins almost a thousand years ago, when Viking King, Sitriuc Silkenbeard, build the first church on this site in about 1030. The Anglo-Normans rebuilt the cathedral in the 12th and 13th centuries and this is largely the building we see today, though it was heavily restored in the 1870s.

This Neo-Gothic Archway is a covered bridge leading to the former synod hall. This hall, which incorporates the old St Michael's tower, was formerly used for hosting general synods and diocesan synods for Dublin, Glendalough and Kildare. It is now home to the "Dublinia" exhibition about medieval Dublin.
Cette arcade néo-gothique est un pont couvert menant à l'ancienne salle du synode. Cette salle, qui comprend l'ancienne tour Saint-Michel, était autrefois utilisée pour accueillir les synodes généraux et les synodes diocésains de Dublin, Glendalough et Kildare. According to a site sign, the medieval elements that are incorporated into this cloister all come from the abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa (near Perpignan, France), constructed under its Abbot Gregory 1130 and 1146. The capitals are vigorously carved: the planes are simple and clearly defined; and the decorative and figural motifs concentrated at the corners, provide strong visual support for the abaci and arcading above them. In addition to the two unadorned examples the capitals in this particular arcade are variously decorated with figures blowing horns, simple beasts with half-swallowed men in their mouths and conjoined lions devouring men. The eight-sided fountain in the center dates back to the 13th century and comes from the nearby monastery of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines. The monastery was sacked in the 17th century and fallen into ruin by the 19th century. As reconstructed here, the cloister is about one quarter the size of the original, but the proportions run approximately the same. The modern stone required for reconstruction was obtained from the original 12th century quarry.

The Baptistery Pulpit.
Nicola Pisano's Gothic masterpiece 1255-1260 depicts religious scenes in pagan relief decorating tombs in Camposanto.
It is surrounded by eight columns alternating with four pillars.
St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church is a medieval Spanish monastery cloister which was built in the town of Sacramenia in Segovia, Spain, in the 12th century but dismantled in the 20th century and shipped to New York City in the United States. It was eventually reassembled at 16711 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida, where it is now an Episcopal church and tourist attraction called Ancient Spanish Monastery. It is the oldest European-built structure in the Western Hemisphere.

Romanesque capital in the cathedral of Payerne, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
The first church was built in the 10th century. In 960 it was expanded following the model of the Church of Cluny and the entrance hall was extended. A second building phase began in the middle of the 11th century, which brought the church to approximately its current appearance.

The Iron Route should not be missed for a first Andorra visit and the historic view on Andorra's early iron economy. It is related to a hiking tour along Riu Valira del Nord to village of Llorts where the iron-mine is located. Quite easy to do, also offering a lot of surprises of artwork as famous "Family Jordino". A lovely family tour.

A lovely visit to Canterbury Cathedral home of the worldwide Anglican Church, The cathedral was first founded in 597 and rebuilt by the Normans between 1070 and 1077, Now a World Heritage Site. Beautiful historic place to visit.

St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church is a medieval Spanish monastery cloister which was built in the town of Sacramenia in Segovia, Spain, in the 12th century but dismantled in the 20th century and shipped to New York City in the United States. It was eventually reassembled at 16711 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida, where it is now an Episcopal church and tourist attraction called Ancient Spanish Monastery. It is the oldest European-built structure in the Western Hemisphere.

The Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Swithun, commonly known as Winchester Cathedral, is the cathedral of the city of Winchester, England, and is among the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Winchester and is the mother church for the ancient Diocese of Winchester. It is run by a dean and chapter, under the Dean of Winchester.
The cathedral as it stands today was built from 1079 to 1532 and is dedicated to numerous saints, most notably Swithun of Winchester. It has a very long and very wide nave in the Perpendicular Gothic style, an Early English retrochoir, and Norman transepts and tower. With an overall length of 558 feet (170 m), it is the longest medieval cathedral in the world. With an area of 53,480 square feet (4,968 m2), it is also the sixth-largest cathedral by area in the UK, surpassed only by Liverpool, St Paul's, York, Westminster (RC) and Lincoln.
History
Though churches were recorded in Winchester as early as 164, the first Christian church can be traced back to c. 648, when King Cenwalh of Wessex built a small, cross-shaped building just north of the present building. This building, known as the Old Minster, became the cathedral for the new Diocese of Winchester in 662, a vast area stretching from the English Channel to the River Thames, the bishopric having been transferred from Dorchester on Thames, Oxfordshire by Bishop Wine. The design of this early church cannot be confirmed, for no trace other than ground plan exists today, but Wolstan mentions a gateway tower situated some distance from the west end. Wine died in c. 672, but one of his later successors, Swithun, would become one of the most famous Bishops of Winchester.
Whether Swithun himself oversaw any expansion of the Old Minster is unknown, but it is recorded in Acta Sanctorum that from 963 to 984, Bishop Æthelwold greatly expanded the church, the works being finished by the following Bishop, Alphege. The church was rededicated in 993, and consisted of a central tower, north and south aisles, transepts, crypt and an apse, and was briefly the largest church in Europe. Also on the site was the New Minster, in direct competition with the neighbouring Old Minster. The New Minster was begun by Alfred the Great but completed in 901 by his son Edward the Elder. These two monasteries existed side by side, the monks becoming virtually intertwined with one another. Swithun's body, which according to his wishes had been buried in the graveyard outside the church, was brought inside and housed in a magnificent shrine.

Saturday 14th of August 2021 and a trip to the closest Cathedral to me in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Cathedral was built in 1180AD and paid for my a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for a time and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls.
