According to a site sign, the medieval elements that are incorporated into this cloister all come from the abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa (near Perpignan, France), constructed under its Abbot Gregory 1130 and 1146. The capitals are vigorously carved: the planes are simple and clearly defined; and the decorative and figural motifs concentrated at the corners, provide strong visual support for the abaci and arcading above them. In addition to the two unadorned examples, the capitals in this particular arcade are variously decorated with figures blowing horns, simple beasts with half-swallowed men in their mouths and conjoined lions devouring men. The eight-sided fountain in the center dates back to the 13th century and comes from the nearby monastery of Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines. The monastery was sacked in the 17th century and fallen into ruin by the 19th century. As reconstructed here, the cloister is about one quarter the size of the original, but the proportions run approximately the same. The modern stone required for reconstruction was obtained from the original 12th century quarry.
The Pfarrkirche St. Severus -- Parish Church of St Severus -- in the town of Boppard (Rheinland-Pfalz / Rhineland-Palatinate, in southwestern Germany), seen from the main square on a clear afternoon in mid-October (2006).
The Marktplatz, or Market Square, is located just back from the waterfront along the Rhine; it is lined with buildings featuring characteristic half-timbering, or Fachwerk. The St-Severus Kirche is a twin-towered Romanesque church of the 12th/13th century.
Boppard is located along the Middle Rhine (Mittelrhein) gorge, where the valley narrows in a particularly scenic manner between Bingen and Koblenz. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St David's Cathedral (in Welsh Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi) which is situated in St Davids (the smallest City in Britain) in the county of Pembrokeshire, on the most westerly point of Wales.
The Cathedral stands on the site of a 6th-century monastery founded by Dewi (David), a Celtic Christian monk, who later became St David the Patron Saint of Wales. Due to the relics of St David, the cathedral was a major pilgrimage destination throughout the Middle Ages.
In the 6th Century St David was reputedly born on a cliff top on the South-West Wales coast during a fierce storm. The site of David’s birth is marked by the ruin of a tiny ancient chapel close to a holy well and the more recent 18th century chapel dedicated to his mother can still be seen near St. David’s Cathedral.
The Celtic saint soon became famous for his learned preaching, devotion to God, and extreme asceticism (he ate only bread and herbs, drank only water, and regularly stood in cold water for long periods). He was nicknamed Dewi Ddyfrwr, David the Water Drinker.
Many legends have circulated about David, including one alleging that King Arthur was his uncle and that among the "prophecies of Merlin" was a prediction that St David would found a bishopric in Wales. In another legend, St. Gildas foretold David's birth when a pregnant woman came into the church as he was preaching. He was struck dumb, and on regaining his power of speech, predicted that she would give birth to a son "with a greater proportion of the divine spirit than has ever fallen to the share of a preacher."
Life in the monastic community that formed under David's leadership was a simple one of prayer, study, and hard labor. Soon a bishopric was established at the site (according to tradition, David was the first bishop), making the monastic church a cathedral. In the centuries that followed, St. David's Cathedral suffered more than a dozen attacks by Vikings and other marauders.
In 1081, William the Conqueror visited St Davids to pray and, probably, to explore its strategic benefits due to its proximity to Ireland. The cathedral was safe under Norman rule, but at the cost of its original Welsh character. The Normans regarded their own form of Christianity as superior to the Celtic way, and soon set out to reform it. This was probably the motivation behind the Latin Life of David written by a bishop's son in 1090, which reports that David visited Jerusalem and was consecrated bishop by the patriarc.

One of Warren's most defining downtown building is the flat-iron National City Bank Building, which sits on the point dividing Second and Pennsylvania Avenues. Elaborately carved Hummelstown brownstone and a clock tower topped by a dragon weather vane are a few of the defining architectural details on this 1891 building, which replaced a block destroyed by fire in 1889. Although fires necessitated the replacement of many downtown buildings, other buildings were replaced when businessmen and merchants sought additional space or more modern facilities in order to do business more efficiently or attract customers. Facade and signage alterations were commonly made to 'update' buildings in downtown Warren, usually only on the first floor, which would be most visible to foot traffic.

Christ Church is the oldest building in continuous use in Dublin. The story of the cathedral begins almost a thousand years ago, when Viking King, Sitriuc Silkenbeard, build the first church on this site in about 1030. The Anglo-Normans rebuilt the cathedral in the 12th and 13th centuries and this is largely the building we see today, though it was heavily restored in the 1870s.

The Church of San Martín de Tours, one of the most important Romanesque examples in Salamanca, stands in the Plaza del Corrillo, once the scene of intense social and commercial activity. Founded in 1103 and built in the 12th century on the initiative of Count Martín Fernández, the church, a National Historic-Artistic Monument, is second only to the Old Cathedral in architectural importance in the city. Despite centuries of changes and the additions that hide the original semicircular apses, the rear façade, with its modified window, offers a glimpse of its history. The Plaza del Corrillo, which in the 15th century was marked by conflict and nicknamed “Corrillo de la Hierba,” now serves as a place of passage and socializing, offering a unique perspective on this element of the church dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, a saint venerated by medieval merchants, near the old market.

The monastery was founded in 885 by count Wilfred the Hairy, who destined it to the education of his daughter Emma, who later became the first abbess. Wilfred had previously founded the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll for his son Radulf.
The church was consecrated on 24 June 887 by the bishop of Vic. In 1017, by request of Bernard I of Besalú, a papal bull suppressed the nunnery; Bernard acquired them, and brought into the monastery (now part of the bishopric of Besalú) a community of monks. From 1083 to 1114 it was under the Monastery of St. Victor of Marseille, who sent here a community of nuns of Greek origin. In 1114 the intervention of the Pope allowed a community of Augustinian canons to take possession of the monastery in a definitive way. Ruled by local abbots until 1484, later it was under commendatary abbots. In 1592 the monastery was secularized and converted into a simple collegiate, suppressed in 1856. It was declared a Historical Monument in 1931.
The current church buildings date to the 12th century. In 1428 an earthquake destroyed the dome and the bell tower, and damaged the church, which was largely restored.
The church has a single nave, included into a wide transept. The latter opens to five apses. It houses the altarpiece of the White Virgin, executed in 1343 by Florentine artists and the Baroque chapel of the Pains, which is home to a "Pietà" by Josep Viladomat. Due to its original location in the middle of the monastery, the transept once give access to both the female and the male sectors of the abbey.
The sculptural complex of the "Descension", dating to c. 1250, is considered one of the most outstanding examples of Romanesque sculpture in Catalonia.
The monastery has also kept a small 15th century cloister in Gothic style, with two floors, as well as an Abbot palace, dating to the same century.
The monumental cemetery of Piazza dei Miracoli is called Camposanto. According to tradition, when the Republic of Pisa decided to build it, they transported the land of Mount Calvary, in Palestine, to the place, using several ships, so that their dead could rest in a land already consecrated by the presence of Christ. This earth would have the virtue of decomposing bodies in just three days.
It was the last monument to be built in the Piazza, having been founded in 1277 to house the tombs until then scattered around the cathedral. Camposanto is one of the oldest medieval Christian architectural works intended for the cult of the dead.

St. Mary's Church is a Lutheran church in Sigtuna, not far from Stockholm, Sweden. It is a fine example of Brick Gothic architecture in Sweden.
The church was built by the Dominican order as their convent church, and construction began in the 1230s. The church was inaugurated in 1247, but was probably not finished until 1255, when archbishop Jarler was entombed in the church.
The church was built as part of a larger monastic complex. Of this convent nothing remains today; it was closed during the Reformation and the bricks used as building materials, e.g. at Svartsjö Palace and Venngarn Castle. The church is the only medieval church in Sigtuna to have survived the Reformation.
During the 1280s, the church was expanded and partly remade. No major alterations were then made of the church until a renovation in 1904-05. The church was again renovated in the 1960s.
The church is built of brick in a transitional style, between Romanesque and Gothic. It is the earliest known brick church in the area around Lake Mälaren. The church is built as a hall church with two aisles and a central nave.
Internally, it was decorated with frescos, some of which are medieval and some of which are reproductions from the 1904-05 renovation. Externally, the façade is decorated with blind arches.

Saturday 14th of August 2021 and a trip to the closest Cathedral to me in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Cathedral was built in 1180AD and paid for my a local wealthy Norman merchant. It has a very interesting history. In 1449AD the Bishop of Chichester was murdered in Portsmouth by sailors so the cathedral was closed for a time and the people of Portsmouth excommunicated! The Cathedral is just a short walk from the closest beach at the Hot Walls.

Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Přední Kopanina)
The Rotunda of St. Mary Magdalene in Prague-Přední Kopanina is a Romanesque rotunda, standing on the very northwestern edge of Prague, in the middle of the Přední Kopanina district. The rotunda falls under the administration of the Roman Catholic parish in Tuchoměřice.
The unplastered building of the church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene is led out of small marl blocks, probably mined directly from the local quarry, which is still a well-known source of this material. The central part of the church is a round nave, the interior of which measures over five meters across, on the east side a semicircular apse joins the nave, on the west side a slender tower with an approximately square floor plan. Research in 1983 showed that this layout of the church is original, from the time of its construction, which is not documented in more detail, but is generally placed in the first half of the 12th century.
The presence of the portal on the floor of the south wall of the tower, interpreted as the entrance to the porch, may then indicate for this period the existence of a manor house in the vicinity of this side of the church.
A rectangular extension was later attached to the south side of the rotunda, which currently serves as the main nave, while the rotunda became a presbytery and the tower serves as a sacristy. The functional arrangement of the church is thus today, in contrast to the usual orientation to the east, rotated by 90 degrees.
The current appearance of the church of St. Mary Magdalene is the result of modern adaptations. After the collapse of the vault in 1779, the rotunda was left to its fate for a long time. It was not until 1852 to 1858 that an extensive renovation was carried out according to the project of Karel Wiesenfeld (1802-1870), a long-time professor of civil engineering at the Prague Polytechnic (this is the only case of Wiesenfeld's own construction work). The vault was then restored with a wooden structure instead of a stone one, the tower was noticeably raised, new window openings were made (only two windows are considered unchanged, medieval today, one on the ground floor of the west side of the tower, the other on the southeast side of the apse).
The marl altar relief with a scene of the Crucifixion, of uncertain age, perhaps from the second half of the 17th century, stands out from the furniture of the church. It is also worth mentioning the painting Adoration of the Magi with the side figures of St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila by Josef Hellich from 1861 and the painting of St. Mary Magdalene by Vilém Kandler. The Gothic sandstone baptistery has been preserved from the older equipment. The stained glass windows date from the 1990s. So far, the last reconstruction of the building was completed in 2000.

The structure is notable for its main portal, adorned with multiple concentric arches featuring geometric and vegetal details, as well as decorated archivolts culminating in an upper niche with the relief of St. Martin on horseback, an emblematic scene of his patronage. The upper tympanum preserves hagiographic frescoes and the side columns, ending in historiated capitals, support the whole, whose façade is composed of Villamayor stone, giving it the typical golden hue. The monument, which has faced several changes and stability problems over time, was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.
