St. Mary's Church is a Lutheran church in Sigtuna, not far from Stockholm, Sweden. It is a fine example of Brick Gothic architecture in Sweden.

The church was built by the Dominican order as their convent church, and construction began in the 1230s. The church was inaugurated in 1247, but was probably not finished until 1255, when archbishop Jarler was entombed in the church.

The church was built as part of a larger monastic complex. Of this convent nothing remains today; it was closed during the Reformation and the bricks used as building materials, e.g. at Svartsjö Palace and Venngarn Castle. The church is the only medieval church in Sigtuna to have survived the Reformation.

During the 1280s, the church was expanded and partly remade. No major alterations were then made of the church until a renovation in 1904-05. The church was again renovated in the 1960s.

The church is built of brick in a transitional style, between Romanesque and Gothic. It is the earliest known brick church in the area around Lake Mälaren. The church is built as a hall church with two aisles and a central nave.

Internally, it was decorated with frescos, some of which are medieval and some of which are reproductions from the 1904-05 renovation. Externally, the façade is decorated with blind arches.

Approaching the ruins of medieval Strata Florida Abbey (near Pontrhydfendigaid and Tregaron in Ceredigion, West Wales) in Welsh Abaty Ystrad Fflur, on a mostly clear afternoon in late May 2022.

The Romanesque archway of the “Great West Door,” the remains of the west entrance of the ruined church, frames a view of the limited surviving walls of the nave. Flowering shrubs border the site.

A monastery was founded quite nearby around 1164 by Cistercian monks from Whitland Abbey, with land granted by Robert FitzStephen (ca 1123-1183), a Norman-Welsh knight. Under the patronage of Rhys ap Gruffydd (1132-1197, known as the Lord Rhys) prince of Deheubarth, the Cistercian abbey was established at its present site in 1184, where it grew into a key religious, economic, and cultural centre; it was the burial place of many princes of Deheubarth during the 12th and 13th centuries as well as the noted 14th-century Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, and a number of important medieval Welsh texts were very probably written there. During the rising of Owain Glyndŵr, the last declared Welsh Prince of Wales (known in English as the rebel Owen Glendower), between 1401 and 1415, the English army occupied the site. Even though the Cistercian monks were then allowed to return there, Strata Florida never recovered its former prominence, and it was dissolved under Henry VIII in 1539.

The buildings were dismantled or fell into ruin over subsequent centuries, until recognition of its importance by Victorian archaeologists resulted in an excavation led by Stephen Williams, a railway engineer and a founder member of the Cambrian Archaeological Association. It officially became a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1919 and is now in the care of Cadw.

(Information from the official Cadw website, the website of the Strata Florida Trust, and Wikipedia, all last consulted 12 March 2024. Rhys ap Gruffydd’s dates from US Library of Congress/Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) name record no98071481.)

Christ Church is the oldest building in continuous use in Dublin. The story of the cathedral begins almost a thousand years ago, when Viking King, Sitriuc Silkenbeard, build the first church on this site in about 1030. The Anglo-Normans rebuilt the cathedral in the 12th and 13th centuries and this is largely the building we see today, though it was heavily restored in the 1870s.

Pisa Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Pisa) is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Italy. It is a notable example of Romanesque architecture, in particular the style known as Pisan Romanesque. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Pisa.

The original building plan was a Greek cross with a grand cupola at the crossing, but today the plan is a Latin cross with a central nave flanked by two side aisles on each side, with the apse and transepts having three naves. The inside offers a spatial effect similar to that of the great mosques thanks to the use of raised lancet arches, the alternating layers of black and white marble, and the elliptical dome, inspired by the Moors. The presence of two raised matronea in the nave, with their solid, monolithic columns of granite, is a clear sign of Byzantine influence. Buscheto welcomed Islamic and Armenian influence.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol, one of Lisbon's most emblematic viewpoints, located in the heart of Alfama, on the south side of Castelo Hill, offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the red-tiled roofs of the neighborhood, the Tagus River and several emblematic landmarks. From its privileged location, next to the old gates of the Fernandina wall, you can see the bell towers of the Church of São Vicente de Fora (16th century, built on a monastery founded after the conquest of Lisbon in 1147) and, to the right, the Church of Santo Estêvão (18th century). The view also takes in the National Pantheon and the characteristic architecture of Alfama, with its white and colorful buildings, its industrial chimneys and the houses arranged on the hillside down to the river.

Listed in the National Archives of the Smithsonian as one of the most outstanding buildings in the U.S. known for its historic restoration, City Hall in Bay City was built between 1894 and 1897. In 1980, the building was completely restored at a cost of $3.3 million and following a fire in 2010 underwent a $5 million upgrade and rehabilitation. It is one of the finest examples of municipal architecture in the modern Romanesque style to be found in this country and exemplifies one of many outstanding preservation efforts in Bay City.

The Benedictine Monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil (Ourense-Ribera Sacra) has three cloisters. The "cloister of Bishops" is the thirteenth century and the lower body is Romanesque and has double columns. The upper body was later built and its weight became necessary to construction of huge buttresses to prevent warping. However, you can see the "displacement" of the columns on the shorter sides of the cloister. Today is a Parador Nacional.

The Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is an amazing example of Italian-Romanesque architecture. The black and white layered stone of the exterior is repeated on the interior through the impressive arched walls that line the nave. More impressive even than the architecture is the fact that this church still stands today. As part of Operation Grog during WWII, a British ship fired a shell that pierced through the cathedral and failed to detonate. The cathedral has the unexploded ordinance on display with the following description:

"This bomb, launched by the British Navy, though breaking through the walls of this great cathedral, fell here unexploded on February 9, 1941. In perpetual gratitude, Genoa, the City of Mary, desired to engrave in stone, the memory of such grace."

The Romanesque Benedictine abbey church of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire (in the département of Loiret, in the northern part of the Centre Region of central France) in the middle Loire Valley, on a mostly overcast afternoon in late May. This view is from the west, looking at the west porch while standing in the main place of the small town, which today is also called St-Benoît-sur-Loire ("Saint Benedict on [the] Loire").

This Romanesque church was primarily constructed 1067-1218, with later elements. It is associated with the monastery of Fleury (Abbaye de Fleury or Abbaye de Saint-Benoît de Fleury), which -- founded ca. 630 -- had existed prior to the Benedictine foundation, which followed the translation of relics of St. Benedict to the abbey in 660, by the 8th century. The abbey continued until the French Revolution (being broken up in 1791), then was refounded in 1944, again by Benedictine monks.

Today it is part of the composite UNESCO World Heritage site Vallée de la Loire -- The Loire Valley -- between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes.

(Information primarily from the website of the Abbaye de Fleury, consulted 31 January 2015.)

Please note that the region's name when this picture was taken in 2009 was Centre, but in 2015, as a result of the merger of regions, the name was changed to Centre-Val de Loire.
