The Ponte di Rialto, seen on Friday 18th July 1986 and photographed while the original Mrs B negotiated with a gondolier. £15 for a half-hour wallow around the backwaters. Multiply by X for inflation 1986-2010 and you get the price in present-day cost. I was disinclined to accept such terms but, of course, had to go along to keep the peace.

Actually we were staying, not in Venice, but in the popular family resort of Lido di Jesolo, just down the coast. Venice was reached by bus and ferry. It made little impression on me and I don't remember it very clearly ...only the crush of tourists in St Mark's, and women being turned away at the door if their shoulders were exposed. There were indignant mutterings among the excluded, but in my uptight, uncool, fogeyish way I rather sided with the authorities. I seem to remember the bridge as being lined with chic boutique-like shops with elegant, minimalist window displays, selling overpriced jewellery or toiletries. In this it reminded me of Pulteney Bridge in Bath.

Train Robbery on the Sumpter Valley Railroad

When planning a summer visit to Baker County in northeast Oregon, be sure to add the Sumpter Valley Railroad to your travel itinerary. History comes to life aboard the vintage trains as you travel through the heart of gold country in the scenic Sumpter Valley. Running between McEwen and the historic mining town of Sumpter, and occasionally run into the Gold Rush Bandits, it’s a guarantee that the whole family will enjoy this relaxing trip back in time without having to leave the comfort of the present.

Plan ahead and ride during one of the train robbery reenactment weekends when the Gold Rush Bandits are in town.

The Sumpter Valley Railroad is open weekends and major holidays, Memorial Day Weekend through the last weekend in September. Round trips take just over two hours, including layover. Make your reservations at www.svry.com

For more information about the Sumpter Valley Railway including scheduled train robberies, or other Baker County events and attractions, visit the Baker County tourism website at www.basecampbaker.com

A man approached a woman pushing her infant in a stroller, punched her in the head, and took her purse. The suspect fled on foot and is at large; the victim sustained minor injuries and her child was unharmed.

On Sunday, September 20, 2015, at about 6:39 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a number of calls of a strong-arm robbery that had just occurred in the 3100 block of Middlefield Road, just north of Loma Verde Avenue. Officers responded to the area immediately, but the suspect was gone. An area search did not turn up the suspect.

The investigation revealed that the victim, a woman in her thirties, had been pushing her infant in a stroller northbound on the east sidewalk of Middlefield Road. When her infant started crying, she stopped and began attending to the baby. She then felt a tug on her shouldered purse. As she realized what was happening, the suspect punched her in the side of the head, ripped the purse from her shoulder, and ran away. The victim sustained an abrasion to her ear and redness to the side of her head, but declined medical attention at the scene. Her baby was not harmed.

Multiple witnesses saw either the assault or the immediate aftermath, and two people followed the suspect as he ran eastbound on Loma Verde Avenue from Middlefield Road before they lost sight of him. The witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male in his twenties with a stocky build, about 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall. The suspect may have had a full beard. He was wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled up over a baseball hat, and also was wearing jeans. The suspect sketch was added to this news release on September 21 at about 8:45 p.m.

Detectives are actively investigating the case. There have been no robberies committed in Palo Alto recently by a suspect with a similar description.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. This is the bank! This is the movie that put Pilot Point on the map!

Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

The Town Square was the location of the famous bank robbery scene in the 1968 movie. After a series of amateur heists, Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) lead their first bank robbery as the Barrow Gang alongside a gas station attendant (Michael J. Pollard), Clyde's older brother Buck (Gene Hackman) and his wife, Blanche (Estelle Parsons).

Driving on the highway in Japan is an expensive proposition. Can't think of any toll distance you'd have to drive in the US that would cost you damn near $50....

I guess you need to be more careful when the bank isn't FDIC insured?

The bane of my life, one of the grey squirrels which constantly attacks the bird feeders and is nothing really other than a rat with a fluffy tail, provided a new mini drama today. We recently spotted a house mouse in the garden, too close to the back door for our comfort, so we set a humane trap ( the sort that flicks down a shutter but has air holes so the mouse can be re-homed a little further away from the house).

This morning I heard a clatter, looked out of the window and there was the squirrel thief, bashing the trap ( it was empty of all but seed as we had only just checked it a few minutes previously). It had sprung the flap but the seed was still inside and it was determined to take it.

At this point it looked as though it was about to disappear over the wall but then .........

The greatest train robbery in American history was not the work of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid somewhere out West; it was here in Lake County.

On June 12, 1924, at 10:30 p.m., in the small community of Rondout, between Lake Forest and Libertyville, on a rail intersection along the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul right-of-way, a gang of gunmen heisted a payroll of more than $3 million, the biggest take in American train robbery history. Aboard the train were robbers Brent Glassock and Willis Newton, disguised as crewmen.

As the train approached Rondout, they pulled guns on the engineer and fireman and ordered them to stop. When the train stopped at Rondout, four Cadillac sedans filled with gunmen were waiting. The railroad crew was ordered to load sacks of mail and money into the waiting cars.

All was going according to plan until one robber accidentally shot another. But the gang fled with millions of dollars to divide. Several law enforcement agencies, including Lake County sheriff's police, teamed up to pursue the bandits. Among the pursuers was U.S. postal inspector Willam J. Fahy, who dismissed leads as "wild goose chases" and was seen spending heavily after the robbery.

Clarahan's grandfather went undercover at the behest of U.S. Atty. Gen. Harlon F. Stone and eventually helped convict the entire gang of robbers and its larcenous mastermind: U.S. Postal Inspector William J. Fahy.
