Old Hall street jewel robbery 1956 Fog would combine with smoke to be known as ‘smog,’ a vile vapour that covered everything with a black film.

The housewife particularly hated smog because it brought about a mammoth cleaning task.

The beginning of 1956 saw a blanket of smog covering the town for two days. A thick ‘peasouper’, as it was known, descended on the town causing chaos.

Traffic in and out of town was reduced to a crawl.

Bus conductors were forced to walk in front of their vehicles as drivers struggled to maintain services.

Visibility was down to three yards; motorist who did not follow ‘nose to tail’ found themselves on the wrong side of the road.

People with respiratory problems were advised to stay indoors.

Police at Middleton went about their duties wearing specially designed smog masks while members of the public pressed handkerchiefs, scarves and wads of cotton to their mouths to avoid breathing in undiluted fog.

At Old Hall Street a group of thieves took advantage of the severe weather conditions.

Under the cover of the thick smog and darkness, they removed the roof slates to gain entry into a jewellers shop.

On the roof they neatly stacked the slates in piles. Once inside they were not so considerate, for they stole a large quantity of ladies and gents wristwatches, pocket watches and alarm clocks and imitation jewellery.

A neighbour who noticed the neatly stacked slates and informed the police spotted the break-in.

The Great Train Robbery

The Great Train Robbery took place just outside Leighton Buzzard.

The Great Train Robbery was the robbery of £2.6 million from a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London on the West Coast Main Line in the early hours of the 8th. August 1963, at Bridego Railway Bridge.

After tampering with the lineside signals to bring the train to a halt, a gang of 15, led by Bruce Reynolds, attacked the train. Other gang members included Gordon Goody, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, Roy James, John Daly, Jimmy White, Ronnie Biggs, Tommy Wisbey, Jim Hussey, Bob Welch and Roger Cordrey, as well as three men known only as numbers "1", "2" and "3", two of whom later turned out to be Harry Smith and Danny Pembroke. A 16th. man, an unnamed retired train driver, was also present.

With careful planning based on inside information from an individual known as "The Ulsterman", named (erroneously) as Patrick McKenna in 2014, the robbers escaped with over £2.6 million (equivalent to £56 million today). The bulk of the stolen money was never recovered.

Though the gang did not use any firearms, Jack Mills, the train driver, was beaten over the head with a metal bar. Mills was so severely injured that he never worked again. After the robbery, the gang hid at Leatherslade Farm.

After the police found this hideout, incriminating evidence led to the eventual arrest and conviction of most of the gang. The ringleaders were sentenced to thirty years in jail.

Leighton Buzzard station was the location for part of the film Robbery, which is based on the Great Train Robbery. The 1967 film starred Stanley Baker and James Booth.

The Common Myna is a hollow-nesting species, it nests and breeds in protected hollows found either naturally in trees or artificially on buildings (for example, recessed windowsills or low eaves). This aggressiveness has enabled the Common Myna to displace many breeding pairs of native hollow-nesters, thereby reducing their reproductive success. Spring being the breeding and nesting season of other birds, this one was attacking the parrot bill to capture it.

So I went to lunch at 11:20 today and I returned around 12:00. My co-worker had left to get lunch right before I got back. Some other people in my office and I noticed many, many police cars and emergency vehicles going by. They blocked off the road and we soon found out there was a bank robbery about two miles away from where I worked and then a high-speed chase and gunshots fired by the suspects and police. They chase lasted only a mile or so, and ended up about a 1/2 mile from my work. The scene was cleared and the road opened again at about 7 p.m. tonight. The two suspects died and two officers were wounded. One was treated at the scene and the other is in the hospital and he should be fine.

My coworker went right through the middle of this at around 11:55. I walked down around 1:00 to see what happened and then we both went together around 4:00.

Don't trust these robbing bastards. They will find you somewhere to live and ask you to pay a deposit, all good. They tell you the charges and say there won't be any extra, fine. You pay and right before you are ready to make the final arrangements they ask for £150 to check references. When you ask what references will they be checking that cost £150, they will mutter and say something about credit checks. You will tell them the last time you ran a credit check it cost £1.50 but you can understand there is a fee. Starting to suspect that they are in fact trying to fleece you, you ask what proof will be provided that they actually did the check and they say they will show you the email! WTF? In any case you say okay but will there be any more hidden charges and they say no. A matter of minutes later they try to distract you while whispering something about a payment for insurance quotes. You start to wonder if this is the same insurance that the landlord is already paying. Long story short(er), you tell them to eff orf and they say they will keep the deposit you have already paid but you decide that it's just easier to lose the deposit than it is to risk many more hidden charges.
