Armed Robbery / Stabbing

My friend and former co-worker Charles (not shown) is now a member of Hyena Dog Robbery. They rocked the Armpit of Hell...ahem...I mean, the Bovine, on Tuesday. Truly awesome band, with a lot of good music. Can't wait to hear the CD.

I learned from my Reverb experience, and tried the same thing again here: spot meter, spot focus, and ISO 800...it seems to work out well, and I get some pretty fast shutter speeds this way. I switched up to 1600 later on in the set...having an f/1.2 lens would be really nice, but I still can't afford glass that fast. Still, I have a lot to learn about controlling colour from the stage lights.

On Thursday, July 19th, 2007 at about 6:30pm a botched hold up resulted in two liquor store employees being shot - one fatally. This photo of a makeshift memorial was taken the night after.

From KNBC4:

A gunman who killed a Hollywood liquor store clerk and wounded his co-worker during a failed robbery attempt opened fire after one of the victims set off a silent alarm, police said Friday as they released security video of the crime.

Pulod Davlatnazarov, 39, was shot in the head about 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lime Lite Liquor in the 1600 block of La Brea Avenue, said Lt. Roben De La Torre of the Los Angeles Police Department. The clerk died at the scene.

Vladimir Akkerman, 69, was hospitalized in critical condition with a wound to his abdomen, De La Torre said.

Crystal Lake police are investigating a jewelry store robbery where an employee was hit in the face by the suspect on Saturday.

At around 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, the Crystal Lake Police Department responded to Dalzell Jewelers at 41 North Williams Street in Crystal Lake for a report of a robbery.

Authorities said that a black male had entered the store and asked to see specific jewelry. While being shown the jewelry, the suspect took two trays of diamond jewelry and fled from the business.

While fleeing from the business and employees, the suspect struck one of the employees with his hand who tried to stop him. The employee refused medical attention at the scene. No weapons were displayed or implied during the robbery. An accurate price of the stolen jewelry is not yet available, police said.

The black male suspect was described as being in his 20’s with a medium build, approximately 6’1″ tall, wearing a black t-shirt with white lettering on it believed to be “Hoops”, gray sweatpants, and white athletic shoes. The suspect got into a getaway vehicle with a male black driver.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Crystal Lake Police Department at 815-356-3620 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-762-7867.

The robbery is still under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department.

Bracklesham Bay

Bracklesham Bay is a 200.6-hectare (496-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in West Sussex.

Bracklesham is a coastal bay on the west side of the Manhood Peninsula. The bay looks out onto the English Channel, and the Isle of Wight is visible from the beach, as is the Nab Tower lighthouse and the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

The villages of Bracklesham and East Wittering are situated in the centre of the bay, and it is bordered by the town of Selsey on the southeastern tip, and the village of West Wittering on the west side.

-- Biology and Geology of Bracklesham Bay

This stretch of foreshore has unimproved grazing pastures, shingle, salt marsh, reed beds and ditches. The pasture is subject to seasonal flooding, and it is important for its breeding and overwintering birds. The site has highly fossiliferous Eocene (56 to 34 million years ago) beds with over 160 fish species.

There are also much more recent Middle Pleistocene marine deposits dating to around 500,000 years ago which provide a record of changes in sea levels.

-- The Medmerry Managed Realignment Scheme

The earth embankment at Medmerry holding back the sea was originally built in the 1960's; however the coastline in the area was subject to frequent flooding events which were becoming unsustainable.

The Medmerry scheme arose out of consultations from the 2008 Pagham to East Head Coastal Defence Strategy, with the managed realignment scheme being adopted. In 2013 the Environment Agency completed a new 7 km inland floodbank and breach in the shingle wall to provide flood relief, and this enabled creation of the Medmerry RSPB nature reserve.

The scheme cost £28 million. It was the largest open-coast scheme in Europe, and one of the most sustainable projects that the Environment Agency has completed.

A willow and wire woven periwinkle art installation was created by environmental artists Mark Antony Haden Ford and Rebecca Ford. It has been mistaken by some visitors as depicting the poop emoji.

The Great Train Robbery

So what else happened on the day that Beattie posted the card?

Well, on the 14th. August 1963, British police arrested five persons believed to have been members of the gang that had carried out the robbery of the Glasgow-London mail train the previous week, and recovered £100,000 of the loot that had been stolen.
