We then tore out the area of the wall where the new doors will go. We are currently stopped at this point, waiting for the new double doors we ordered to come in.

Farewell to Via Rail.

This part of the journey is over. The next week we spent in the lovely City and surrounding area of Vancouver. There was such a high contrast between the bright sky and the dark station that I had to sacrifice the sky for detail in the train. This was before I learned how to shoot in RAW. So I looked up a technique for replacing burnt out skies. It was quite tricky finding a sky suitable for the weather conditions at the station. I know it is not an image that a purist would welcome but it is a huge improvement on the original sky.

Flick is the gesture that is quickly replacing “nose rings” (the “next page” links) at the bottom of most multipage articles on Web sites. The flick gesture allows users to quickly navigate paginated content much like the pages of a book.

Replacing railings building 700

Foundation stone 6 Feb 1938 by Archbishop A Killian, architect H H (Herbert) Jory, opened 23 Oct 1938, replacing nearby St Rose’s (built 1863). St Rose’s Hall opened 28 Feb 1909.

“The first church was built at St. John's, about three miles east of Kapunda, in 1850, and the first priest was Father Falland. Very soon that church proved insufficient for the needs of the district, and in 1862 St. Rose's was built, and completed in 1866. For many years now the church had proved inadequate. . . Following the ceremony, afternoon tea was provided in St. Rose's Hall.” [Kapunda Herald 11 Feb 1938]

“The opening of the new Church of St. Rose of Lima at Kapunda . . . Holy Mass will be celebrated in the old church at 7 and 9 a.m., and in the new church at 11 a. m. . . The Blessing and. . . luncheon will be provided in St. Rose's- Hall at the small cost of 1/6, and afternoon tea for 1/.” [Kapunda Herald 21 Oct 1938]

“The new building, in the Romanesque style, is of brick, base of textured colour blend bricks with coarse cemented joints, the superstructure of red Hoffman kiln bricks with rustic sunken joints and tiled roof. . . The main entrance is enriched with a free columnar porch, finished with cream cement and red shingle tiled roof.” [Kapunda Herald 28 Oct 1938]
