I know this is a bit of repeat - I already got 2 more reflection shots earlier. But this one is special as I tried to capture this in last 3 visits and failed. It was near 'wet' experience in the lake during this shoot as the tripod almost toppled into the water! The peaks from left to right are: Forked Kabru N & S, Kanchenjunga and Simvo peeping from right above the fence.

This is a classic 'AmsterS@m' self-reflection shot, before I got heavily involved in puddle reflections, I used to take a lot of these kind of pictures. It's a very simple concept, find a shiny surface, stand in front of it and shoot, still I'm always amazed and surprised by the wicked effects you can create without any editing or using 'magic' software like Photoshop :)

I am not really that fat or short, I bike 20 kilometers every day and often get compliments for my lovely legs, lol ;-D

On October the 4th a new Art exhibition started at the 'ABC Treehouse' in Amsterdam, featuring 10 of my wicked puddle reflections :D

The theme is "AMS * NYC * AMS an artistic look at a 400 year affair". Exhibition and Special Events, 4 October – 29 November 2009. At the ABC Treehouse, Voetboogstraat 11, 1012XK Amsterdam (the link goes to Google Maps).

I stopped off at Blue Heron on the way into Braley. I wanted to look at the Blue Heron pond to see if the reflection shot would work. I have never hit it perfect though. In this case, I drove out to the back of Blue Heron and thought I'd go over to the St.Vrain River to see what I could see. I found out that in October, I still couldn't get even close to the river. I don't Know if it is still running high or maybe it is flowing on one of the bottom land relief ditches and flooding here. I decided I might not get close to the river and it would be right to call this a bayou, an earlier posting which already has a ton of viewings.

I went back again because Ron told me to search for a bridge certain bridge out the back of Blue Heron but that was the one I had used every time before. After working my way around the pond and a bit of investigation, I discovered that to my delight that beaver had take up residency. They can easily accomplish this good work over the night. Plenty of fodder for dam construction. Man, I'd think the trout might take up residency right away if the water company doesn't bust it out right away! If so, beavers can put it right back right away. Casting would be a major difficulty in this thicket. Trees in the water would eventually die if left alone. But, still in all, this would be a good place for a beaver to build a home!

Here are the three layers from the .PSD used to compile the finished image, posted. Note that the foothills are a tad over exposed but darker would have meant more layers and struggles. That was the basis for the exposure. Expose for the highlights; not at all difficult on digital RAW cameras that display gamut on the display. Gamut displays densities that are out of range. Decide what you want included in the image. This is a lesson on what's in a RAW. The additional layers are converted to transparencies of lighter slices that are used to overlay and boost the base exposure. These three slices have allowed me to present what the eye sees in such a high density range image. The link below has exact instructions but my new full-frame RAWs can not be imported into my Photoshop so now I use Lightroom even though I have no use for their catalogs and periodically trash them. You can see obvious editing on the transparent layers but notice that none of it shows on the final. You can get pretty fast and pretty brutal. Editing the transparencies is therefore little bother. They're transparent in the first place. I suggest you try enough of these to get comfortable with the operation. It's easy to get good... and fast.

Make no mistake, these layers were all from the original RAW. After making basic adjustments, only the RAW exposure was changed in Adobe Lightroom. If interested, choose Actions, All sizes and click Original size to study it closer and you'll see some of the rustic layer editing. I sometimes do it with only each transparent layer visible and some times I also edit, usually erasing at 5-15% and 300 pixel brush, with the base and transparent layers visible while gauging the results.

I've bitched and complained about this already a lot in the last 3 months, I am currently working 5 instead of my usual 4 days, and this is taking away all the time I usually reserve for shooting pictures and movies, so I have to improvise and take any chance I get to be able to create some photos on my way to the office, or the supermarket, or wherever it is I'm going. This is no fun, and the quality and quantity of my creative output is diminishing on a daily basis, something I don't appreciate and that I intend to reverse as soon as possible. Until then, these quick snap shots will have to do, I hope you're not too upset that you're having to look at these not-so-wicked reflections, lol :D

Blue hour/reflection shot in Norrköping.

Wanted to get a reflection shot of Castle Ewen and other days a breeze made it impossible. You can just see the suns rays lighting the back of the hill. This an HDR Version, you can see the single shot below in my Photostream. I think this is one occasion that really does make it more realistic and better.

I was just staking my contacts photos and noticed this cool reflection shot that Corinne posted (see it in the comments) and it reminded me that I hadn't posted mine from Yellowstone. All the snow melt proved to be a lovely thing :)

Sadly for me, my camera and lens combination was too powerful to allow me to get many reflection shots - although it was ideal for other subjects. Next time I will make sure I take several options...

Throughout this trip to Disney it seemed that my goal was to get as many shots of an object with their reflection, in a body of water, as possible. This was a quick attempt because everyone was still walking so I tried my best with this popular angle.

I went to to the 2010 Carnevale in Venice, Italy - what an absolute blast! I had the chance to shoot with an incredible number of people in gorgeous costumes and masks - it was a great experience and I'm already looking forward to going back there again.

I took this photo near the Arsenale in Venice on Tuesday, 9 Feb 2010.

We are reflecting back on a neat, old, depot. Here we visited the Historic Durand, Michigan's Union Station, Amtrak Depot, and Michigan Railroad History Museum. This was my first attempt at a water reflection shot.

History of the depot:

The Detroit and Milwaukee Railway brought Durand its first rail service in 1856. In 1877 the Chicago & North Eastern railroad reached the town, and in 1885 the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan (later the Ann Arbor Railroad) added its tracks. The Grand Trunk Railway System and the Ann Arbor Railroad built this depot in 1903, at a cost of $60,000, to serve the thousands of passengers who came to this railroad center. In 1905 the depot was nearly destroyed by fire; however, within six months this near replica had been completed. The last Grand Trunk Western Railroad passenger train stopped here in 1971, Passenger service resumed in 1974 with Amtrak. The city of Durand acquired the depot in 1979.

In 2012, i did a whole series of reflection shots using a mirror and other reflective material. It was to challenge my creativity - and it was a challenge indeed! This shot was one of my biggest challenges - mostly because the one thing I hate to photograph the most - is myself.

Well, not quite on the Gulf (of Mexico), but pun needed. Pretty commercial gardens, a nice reflection shot. No alligators resting near my heels!

Another Reflection Shot for the December Diary....

I found myself in the Kitchen section of "The Warehouse" when I was at the Mall today.

Being distracted... on a hunt to find "Reflective" objects that might be fun to photograph.

When I SHOULD have been shopping for Christmas presents!!!

Anyway... I came across these little teapots...

and couldn't resist pulling out the camera...

It must have looked pretty strange to passers by...

But I just ignored them and carried on rearranging the shelve a wee bit...

So I could get a more interesting shot!

Not the best result... But I didn't want to draw TOO much attention! %-)

Teddy Scares

Mirror reflection shots are fun but when a huge Teddy Bear is hiding in the shower they are kind of scary. Been trying to avoid doing one of these shots but thought I would do something fun. I'll probably end up doing another shot like this but probably something a bit more dramatic!

None of my reflection shots worked out, so I'll have to try again another week. I like this shot of Bonny at Leap Dog Agility where we have class each week. I'm lucky to be able to train at such a terrific facility.

I took these photos while wandering aimlessly around San Marco Piazza in Venice during the Carnevale in February 2010. It was quite an experience - all these costumed characters milling about waiting to be photographed by throngs of paparazzi. I lucked out by doing a lot of one-on-one shooting with the costumed people. I'd love to get back there next year to try new things and check out the new costumes!

Mmm rubbish ... Makes for some good reflection shots. One old and rusted, one just thrown away ...

We were chilling out in the park yesterday, enjoying the good life, feeding the ducks and in general just going with the flow, it was most delicious, life as it should be, easy and enjoyable :)

I took some wicked reflection shots of the trees surrounding our spot and I have to say, there is a certain prehistoric vibe to these babies in the background...luckily for us, there were no hungry Velociraptors around :))
