Why did the rails cross the road? Two adult Virginia rails crossing Airport Road in Swanzey, NH; they were leading their chicks from the main marsh to the wet meadow across the street, perhaps in search of new culinary taste sensations. Three or four pairs of VIrginia rails are raising young in the airport marsh. They seldom show themselves in the open. (1 July, 2020)
While driving around searching for a good spot to capture the beautiful sunset I drove over this rail line and saw an engine backing up a row of cars. The contrast of the warm orange sky and the coolness of the foreground in shadows looked perfect. I also loved how the rails reflected the light in the sky and stood out from the rest of the ground. The lights on the active engine really pop in the background.
