Two and a half years ago, KiwiRail's Coastal Pacific skirted the Pacific Ocean at the Irongate Stream. The seasonal passenger train runs out and back on the scenic 'Main North Line' between Christchurch and the rail ferries at Picton.
This section on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island was hit by serious earthquakes on Monday which caused slips, uplifts, and landslides which have blocked and buckled the road and rail in hundreds of locations.
As the first 7.8 M quake struck just after midnight, express freight train 737 was traversing the area, and - per standard procedure - was brought to a controlled halt; with its DXR locos at this exact spot (albeit heading in the other direction).
The loco engineer was airlifted out after a very long wait as the road and rail was buried and many spots on either side of the train, which will likely remain stranded here - strung out between (and through) three closely spaced tunnels - for months.
In the four days since, there have been more than 2500 aftershocks and some wild weather, making rescue and disaster support along this remote coastline difficult.
The town of Kaikoura sits on the more distant peninsula in this picture and is still isolated, although an army convoy is on its way in via backroads as I type this.
