I put my Halloween tree up in October and leave it up throughout the Christmas season. All but just a handful are glass, primarily Radko, Slavic Treasures, and Old World Christmas. It's a really fun tree. You might take note of my collection of vintage papier mache jack-o-lanterns next to the tree.

I am unable to fully put into words the debt I owe Raymond Chandler.

I first encountered his works as a teenager and I have constantly re-read him ever since.

Since my college years I have been a writer. But Raymond Chandler did not inspire me to be a writer. My love of the way he crafted his prose came way later. As cliche as it sounds, Raymond Chandler inspired me to become a detective.

Many years before I actually became a private investigator I had read Chandler's essay, "The Simple Art of Murder." At the end he describes what the qualities that an ideal hero of detective fiction should have.

As a young man, lacking a positive male role model, this became a roadmap of sorts for me. Later, when I fell ass-backwards into doing professional detective work it was a yardstick.

I certainly have not accomplished or acquired all the traits Chandler espoused, but then again, I'm a real person and not a fictional character.

Like Chandler himself, I am a greatly flawed man. Thanks to his words, however, I have strove to be a better one.

There was a bout of “Cumbrian flu” in West Yorkshire early this morning as Cas put together a patchwork squad for the long trip to League leaders Kells. I was even asked if I had my boots with me ! Despite the earlier panic Cas put up a very decent performance and played their part in a very entertaining encounter. But in the end a powerful and energetic Kells squad took control to run out comfortable winners. Must admit I did find it strange that the match ref wanted to control everything himself without any linesmen to assist.

Kells ARLFC are based high above Whitehaven but the pitches are a brisk 5 minute walk from the clubhouse. My reason for going was to watch a match at the 'Big Waite' an exposed coastal location high up on the cliffs overlooking the Irish Sea and in the shadows of Haig Pit Mill which dates back to the thirteenth century . But the game was played at their secondary location on the village rec which also commanded fantastic views over the Cumbrian countryside as far as the eye could see.

In hindsight it did not really matter as the Haig Colliery Pit Mill is covered in scaffolding whilst they attempt to bring it back to its former glory.

According to the locals there are only 21 roads in Kells itself. There are others but you are unable to drive on them.

This is only Kells' second season in the conference leagues and they look set to secure a second title in the coming weeks and continue through to higher leagues after a rich history of dominating the local Cumbria & Cumberleand scene on a regular basis. They were excellent hosts and the post match meal was delicious and went down a treat.

All seemed peaceful in the North Lakes as we drove past the Bassenthwaite Lake. One could only look and admire how beautiful it looked and marvel as to what mother nature has produced. It was simply stunning.

The Cas Party bus was bouncing all the way back to base. You would never have guessed that they lost as much laughter, music and singing could be heard. I shudder to think what will happen when they record their first away victory of the season.

Another very enjoyable day out.

Hey, let's see what the Condom Shack bunnies are doing for Easter.. WHOA !

Put It To The People March #8, London, UK

A shot from the side of Interstate 10 where I stopped for a few shots of the long abandoned Phoenix Trotting Park. This exit puts you onto Loop 303 North which is what we use to avoid going through Phoenix on our Los Angeles trips.

Put the power of our nationwide installation network to work for you. From light pole banners to massive building wraps, site surveys to project management, our elite team of on-call installers get the job done even if it means rappelling down the side of a 60-story skyscraper. In over 30 years, we’ve seen and done it all.

Some photos will come soon.

The day before Christmas eve I took a slip on some ice outside our house and put my arms out to stop the fall - sadly my left arm also hit theice and skidded from under me and I woundup facedown in the snow unable to move with a very very sore shoulder. So off we went to Pinderfields A&E department. They said there was nothing wrong with the shoulder despite me being in *severe* pain at this point (the give away being the first lot of pain killers they gave me didn't work and I'd asked for a second lot!!) So they sent me on my way with a rudimentary sling held together with sticking plaster with instructions that if it got no better to come back. i did ask if they were sure they hadn't missed anything and I think the nurse was a little affronted by this...but I went on to explain it was extrememly sore but she said bruising could be just as sore and that's what I had - severe bruising. She also said that the secondary team would look over the xrays so if they *had* missed anything they would call me back. So we left A&E...traveled down to Wales for Christmas day - with still no ease up in the pain. Boxing Day went to Swindon - againno let up in the pain but as it was only a few days after and bruising takes a while to comeout I thought no more of it. the day after boxing day I was in so much pain that I made my way to the excellent Princess of Wales Hospital (where all three of my kids had been born and where I used to work) After a quick xray the Drcame back and said she wasn't suprised I was in pain - the ball joint at the top of my arm that goes into my socket has a fracture all the way across it! The Doctor pointed it out to me but to be honest I ain't no medical person - all I know is it hurts - a lot - but the fracture is the line that runs across the middle of the ball apparently) So one proper sling fitted to my arm correctly (a nice soft foam one that doesn't cut into my neck too!!) and some super strength pain killers later and I was sorted. Only problem was - with being in so much pain and beingslightly grumpy all I wanted to do was get home and into my own bed! So we cut the hol a bit short. When I took the xrays into Pinderfields as instructed they a) made me wait in A&E whilst they *checked* the xrays over for an hour, then dumped me back int he waiting room for another 30 mins whilst they made their minds up whether to send me to the fracture clinic or not for a follow up appointment - it was only when I got shirty that they got me an appointment - and guess what - not ONE SINGLE person apologised for missing the fracture. Not one. Hey ho - that the over stretched, under resourced NHS for ya I suppose! ;-)

So, I just put together a Burnette combo for a fellow photographer in Japan. The Aero Ektar and lensboard are the ones that I'd been using till recently; the Speed Graphic I got separately. CLA'd the shutter so it's actually snappier, and probably more accurate than mine (lol). I spent several hours today calibrating the Kalart rangefinder, and, as you can see, it's ready to take a trans-Pacific trip.

I put things in my windows because I hate sunlight, and it's easier than nailing 'em to a wall, plus I figure they insulate ever-so-slightly ... but then I noticed this metal shark behind the American flag sort of makes an unintentional statement about American foreign policy, and the selfish, interventionist, ruthless, bloodthirsty methods our policy employs.
