A visit to The Art Gallery of New South Wales 14/2019
The Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), located in The Domain in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, is the most important public gallery in Sydney and one of the largest in Australia. The Gallery's first public exhibition opened in 1874. Admission is free to the general exhibition space, which displays Australian art (from settlement to contemporary), European and Asian art. A dedicated Asian Gallery was opened in 2003.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales (c.1900)
On 24 April 1871, a public meeting was convened in Sydney to establish an Academy of Art 'for the purpose of promoting the fine arts through lectures, art classes and regular exhibitions.' From 1872 until 1879 the Academy's main activity was the organisation of annual art exhibitions. The first exhibition of colonial art, under the auspices of the Academy, was held at the Chamber of Commerce, Sydney Exchange in 1874. In 1875 Apsley Falls by Conrad Martens, commissioned by the trustees and purchased for £50 out of the first government grant of £500, became the first work on paper by an Australian artist to be acquired by the Gallery.[2]
The Gallery's collection was first housed at Clark's Assembly Hall in Elizabeth Street where it was open to the public on Friday and Saturday afternoons. The collection was relocated in 1879 to a wooden annexe to the Garden Palace built for the Sydney International Exhibition in the Domain and was officially opened as "The Art Gallery of New South Wales". In 1882, the first Director, Eliezer Montefiore and his fellow trustees opened the art gallery on Sunday afternoons from 2 pm to 5 pm. Montefiore believed:
... the public should be afforded every facility to avail themselves of the educational and civilising influence engendered by an exhibition of works of art, bought, moreover, at the public expense.[3]
The destruction of the Garden Palace by fire in 1882 placed pressure on the government to provide a permanent home for the national collection.[2] In 1883 private architect John Horbury Hunt was engaged by the trustees to submit designs. The same year there was a change of name to "The National Art Gallery of New South Wales". The Gallery was incorporated by The Library and Art Gallery Act 1899.[4][5]
In 1895, the new Colonial Architect, Walter Liberty Vernon (1846–1914), was given the assignment to design the new permanent gallery and two picture galleries were opened in 1897 and a further two in 1899. A watercolour gallery was added in 1901 and in 1902 the Grand Oval Lobby was completed.[5]
20th century
Over 300,000 people came to the Gallery during March and April 1906 to see Holman Hunt’s painting The Light of the World. In 1921, the inaugural Archibald Prize was awarded to W.B. McInnes for his portrait of architect Desbrowe Annear. The equestrian statues The offerings of peace and The offerings of war by Gilbert Bayes were installed in front of the main facade in 1926.[6] James Stuart MacDonald was appointed director and secretary in 1929. In 1936 the inaugural Sulman Prize was awarded to Henry Hanke for La Gitana. John William Ashton was appointed director and secretary in 1937.[2]

The first woman to win the Archibald Prize was Nora Heysen in 1938 with her portrait Mme Elink Schuurman, the wife of the Consul General for the Netherlands. The same year electric light was temporarily installed at the Gallery to remain open at night for the first time. In 1943 William Dobell won the Archibald Prize for Joshua Smith, causing considerable controversy. Hal Missingham was appointed director and secretary in 1945.
In 1958 the Art Gallery of New South Wales Act was amended and the Gallery’s name reverted to "The Art Gallery of New South Wales".[7]
In 1969 construction began on the Captain Cook wing to celebrate the bicentenary of Cook's landing in Botany Bay. The new wing opened in May 1972, following the retirement of Missingham and the appointment of Peter Phillip Laverty as director in 1971.[2]
The first of the modern blockbusters to be held at the Gallery was Modern masters: Monet to Matisse in 1975. It attracted 180,000 people over 29 days. The 1976 the Biennale of Sydney was held at the Gallery for the first time. The Sydney Opera House had been the location for the inaugural Biennale in 1973. 1977 saw an exhibition "A selection of recent archaeological finds of the People's Republic of China."[8][9] Edmund Capon was appointed director in 1978 and in 1980 The Art Gallery of New South Wales Act (1980) established the "Art Gallery of New South Wales Trust".[10] It reduced the number of trustees to nine and stipulated that "at least two" members "shall be knowledgeable and experienced in the visual arts".[2]
With the support of then Premier Neville Wran a major extension of the Gallery became a Bicennential project. Opened just in time in December 1988, the extensions doubled the floor space of the Gallery. In 1993 Kevin Connor won the inaugural Dobell Prize for Drawing for Pyrmont and city. In 1994, the Yiribana Gallery, dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, was opened.[2]

Dali City, formerly known as Tali, is the county-level seat of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Yunnan,
Similar to Carlisle in England, Dali City is not a single city but a county-sized area called a city for administrative purposes. Transportation to "Dali" usually arrives at the modern industrial city called Dali but locally distinguished by its former name Xiaguan. Travelers to and discussion of "Dali", however, usually refers to the old town located about an hour away. The old town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Yunnan, known for its natural scenery, historical and cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife.
HISTORY
The Dali area was formerly known as Jumie (苴咩, Jūmiē). The old town was the medieval capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao (fl. 8th and 9th centuries) and the Kingdom of Dali (937–1253). That city was razed and its records burnt during its conquest by China's Mongolian Yuan Dynasty. The present old town was organized in the late 14th century under the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The area became significantly Muslim (Hui) under the Yuan and Ming and was the center of the Panthay Rebellion against the Qing from 1856–1863. It was severely damaged during a massive earthquake in 1925.
Rail and then air transport have permitted the area (particularly Dali Old Town) to become accessible to tourists in the 20th century. It is now one of China's official tourist cities and, along with nearby Lijiang, one of the most popular. To preserve the appeal of the old town, industrial development is restricted to areas such as Xiaguan while building codes mandate new construction the old town and surrounding countryside must conform to the traditional Chinese style, with tiled roofs and brick, plaster, or white-washed walls.
GEOGRAPHY
Dali City is northwest of the provincial capital, Kunming: about 40 minutes by air or 7 hours by train.
Dali is located on a fertile plateau between the Cangshan Range to the west and Erhai lake to the east. It has traditionally been settled by the Bai and Yi minorities. It is also the capital of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.
SITES OF INTEREST
Dali is one of Yunnan's most popular tourist destinations. Sights include:
- Dali museum
- Chong Sheng Temple
- Guanyin Palace of Copper Rain (rebuilt in 1999)
- Jianji Great Bell of Nanzhao (recast in 1997)
- Three Pagodas
- Butterfly Spring
- Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils film city
Xizhou: a historical town famed for its architecture and woodwork
- Shaxi: a historical town in Jianchuan County on the ancient tea route
- Shuang lang: on the opposite side of the lake, once a small fishing village, now a rather high-class tourist destination, most buildings and businesses having overtaken the village since 2012. The coast is now completely built up by tourism estates.
ECONOMY
Much of the local economy now centers around tourism and services catering to travelers.
Historically, Dali was able to control some of the trade between India and China and independently famed for the woodworkers of Xizhou (喜州, Xǐzhōu) and for its high-quality marble, used both for construction and decorative objects. It was so prominent in the latter that the modern Chinese word for marble is literally "Dali stone" (大理石, dàlǐshí).

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
Local transport includes busses, taxis, bicycles, and boats on Erhai Lake. Local busses 4 & 8 provide service from Xiaguan to the old town (1 hr).
AIR
Dali Airport (DLU) is a domestic airport about 13 km (8.1 mi) east of Xiaguan on Weishan or Airport Rd. Taxis run about 60 RMB to Xiaguan or 90 RMB to the old town.[citation needed] It services (as of 2014) Kunming (20 min), Xishuangbanna (25 min), Chongqing (70 min), Chengdu (80 min), Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Guiyuan.
ROAD
Dali (i.e., Xiaguan) is connected to Kunming and points east by the Hangrui Expressway (G56), which also runs west to Ruili on the Burmese border. The Dali Expressway (G56₁₁) is a spur connecting it with Lijiang. The road to the old town is China National Highway 214, which connects to the expresseway to Lijiang north of the lake. It also runs south from Xiaguan to Menghai near the Burmese border.
Long-distance busses run from the old town's west gate to Kunming (about 4½ hrs), Lijiang, and Shangri-La. Every Monday, service is also available to Shaping for its market.

RAIL
Dali (i.e., Xiaguan) has rail connections with daily service to Kunming via the Guangtong-Dali Railway and Lijiang via the Dali-Lijiang Railway. Service to Kunming usually consists of one train during the day and two trains running overnight, with sleeper cars. As the railway network expands in Yunnan, train service will become available to Shangri-La County and Ruili.
CLIMATE
Its low latitude tempered by its high elevation, Dali has a mild subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb) with short, mild, dry winters and warm, rainy summers. Frost may occur in winter but the days still generally warm up to 15 °C or more. During summer, a majority of the days features some rainfall and daytime temperatures rise to 24 °C. A great majority of the year's rainfall occurs from June to October. December 2013 was particularly marked for its high snowfall.

C-17 Globemaster III
Description and Purpose:
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is designed to fulfill military and humanitarian airlift
needs well into the 21st century. A high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed aircraft with a rearloading ramp, the C-17 can carry large combat equipment and troops or humanitarian aid
across international distances directly to small austere airfields anywhere in the world.
With a payload of 164,900 pounds, the C-17 can take off from a 7,000-foot airfield, fly
2,400 nautical miles, and land on a small, austere airfield in 3,000 feet or less. The C-17
is equipped with an externally blown flap system that allows a steep, low-speed final
approach and low landing speeds for routine short-field landings.
Customers:
Worldwide, Boeing has delivered 227 C-17s. Boeing’s program of record with the U.S.
Air Force is to design, build and deliver 223 C-17s through September 2012. Boeing has
delivered 207 C-17s to the USAF as of February 2011.
There are 20 C-17s in service with five international customers. In November 2010,
President Obama announced India’s preliminary agreement for the acquisition of 10 C-
17s. The U.S. Congress approved Kuwait’s letter of request in October 2010, regarding
the acquisition of one C-17. In January 2010, Boeing and the United Arab Emirates
announced that the UAE had agreed to acquire six C-17s in 2011 and 2012. The RAF
has acquired seven C-17s; the Royal Australian Air Force and Canadian Defence Forces
have each received four. The 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability consortium – members
of NATO and Partnership for Peace – received three C-17s in 2009. Qatar, the first
Middle East customer to order C-17s, received two C-17s in 2009 and holds options for
two more.

Asian Pacific Festival of Arts & Music By the Sea unites the Asian Pacific communities, empowers them with a forum for expression, and promotes cultural diversity and awareness through arts and music. The theme “Reflection Through a Shining Community” captures the unity of our Asian Pacific communities and their successes.
The purpose of the Festival is to introduce and celebrate the rich Asian cultures, Asian arts, and Asian music artists to everyone, including the one-point-five and second generations Asian Americans, who might not have traveled to these Asian countries yet.
The opening ceremony on Saturday will kick off with Taiko drums, and the dragon boat demonstration. The Festival offers everyone a virtual trip to “HOME” in many Asian countries such as Vietnam, China, Thailand, Korea, India, Philippines, Japan, Cambodia and many more. Festival-goers will enjoy a variety of cultural exhibits, art walk, folk dances, fashion shows, music and entertainments, martial arts, food eating contests, cooking challenges, alcohol garden, and authentic food from different countries. Children will enjoy the day touring through the Kid’s Village where they will be issued a “Bon Voyage” Passport to tour different Asian countries. While there, the children have the opportunities to participate in fun and collaborative activities.
Highlights include APF Hip-Hop Dance Competition, Miss Scholarship Asian Pacific Pageant, and different exhibits inspired by various artists around the world.
The Festival’s closing ceremony will be on Sunday with an Ondo Dance and a Lantern Ceremony.

Recipe was from The King Arthur Flour's The All-Purpose Baking Cookbook with modification:
Blueberry-Sour Cream Muffins (original recipe was All-Star Muffins)
Makes 16 large muffins
3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose or cake flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter
3/4 cup sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream
2 1/4 cups fresh bluberries
Old-fashioned oats, quantity varies & an optional addition
Preheat the oven to 400 degree F and lightly grease 16 muffin cups or use paper liners.
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, then set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together with a handheld or stand mixer until light and fluffly and almost white in color. Scrape down the bowl to make sure all the butter is incorporated, then add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla and sour cream and mix until incorporated. Add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed just until the batter is smooth.
Gently fold the blueberries into the batter. Fill muffin cups, sprinkle tops with oats if you like, and bake for 18 to 24 minutes, until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove them from the oven, cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then remove the muffins from the pan to finish cooling on a rack.

Aerial view of the Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels site, before the start of the project.
The Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels were opened to the people of Tyneside on 24th July 1951.
These two purpose-built tunnels were designed to connect Howdon in North Tyneside with Jarrow in South Tyneside under the river Tyne.
At a cost of £833,000, these 900 ft (274.5 m) long tunnels, which run parallel to each other, have been connecting the communities on the North and South banks of the river Tyne for the past 60 years.

During the late 1800s, Ohio was the # 1 petroleum exporter on Earth. This is definitely not the case anymore! Despite this, Ohio today still has economic concentrations of oil and natural gas.
Ohio has three significant petroleum occurrences:
1) Trenton Limestone (upper Middle Ordovician) of northwestern Ohio.
2) Clinton Sandstone (Lower Silurian) of eastern Ohio.
3) Knox Group (Beekmantown Dolomite-Rose Run Sandstone-Copper Ridge/Trempealeau Dolomite) (Upper Cambrian to ?lowermost Ordovician) in the eastern ~half of Ohio.
Of these three petroleum systems, the Knox Group generally requires the deepest drilling. Most Knox Group drilling in Ohio targets the Rose Run Sandstone, an interbedded quartzose sandstone-dolostone unit of Late Cambrian age.
The well shown above is being actively drilled (as of February 2018). It was targeting a paleotopographic high at the Knox Unconformity and hoping to encounter petroleum in porous dolostone.
Update: as of fall 2018, this well was producing petroleum from the Upper Trempealeau Dolomite (also known as the Copper Ridge Dolomite). Petroleum is coming from porous dolostones below the Knox Unconformity. The Knox is a megasequence boundary (Sloss sequence boundary) that separates the Sauk Megasequence below from the Tippecanoe Megasequence above.
The following are formation picks for this well (the numbers are from the completion record filed with the Ohio Division of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas Resources):
375 feet depth = top of the Berea Sandstone (lowermost Devonian)
1190 feet depth = top of the "Big Lime" (= Devonian and Silurian carbonate succession, including the Delaware Limestone, Columbus Limestone, and Silurian dolostones)
1992 feet depth = top of the "Packer Shell" (= Middle Silurian Dayton Formation equivalent)
3324 feet depth = Trenton Limestone (upper Middle Ordovician, sensu traditio; lower Upper Ordovician, sensu novo)
3855 feet depth = Gull River Limestone (Middle Ordovician)
3920 feet depth = Knox Unconformity with Trempealeau Dolomite below (Upper Cambrian)

The number of Trucks, Vans* and Special Purpose Vehicles (Light, Medium & Heavy) registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 120,000 - 125,000 vehicles and presumably new trucks registered are offset by old trucks being retired or sold over the border in China.

C-17 Globemaster III
Description and Purpose:
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is designed to fulfill military and humanitarian airlift
needs well into the 21st century. A high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed aircraft with a rearloading ramp, the C-17 can carry large combat equipment and troops or humanitarian aid
across international distances directly to small austere airfields anywhere in the world.
With a payload of 164,900 pounds, the C-17 can take off from a 7,000-foot airfield, fly
2,400 nautical miles, and land on a small, austere airfield in 3,000 feet or less. The C-17
is equipped with an externally blown flap system that allows a steep, low-speed final
approach and low landing speeds for routine short-field landings.
Customers:
Worldwide, Boeing has delivered 227 C-17s. Boeing’s program of record with the U.S.
Air Force is to design, build and deliver 223 C-17s through September 2012. Boeing has
delivered 207 C-17s to the USAF as of February 2011.
There are 20 C-17s in service with five international customers. In November 2010,
President Obama announced India’s preliminary agreement for the acquisition of 10 C-
17s. The U.S. Congress approved Kuwait’s letter of request in October 2010, regarding
the acquisition of one C-17. In January 2010, Boeing and the United Arab Emirates
announced that the UAE had agreed to acquire six C-17s in 2011 and 2012. The RAF
has acquired seven C-17s; the Royal Australian Air Force and Canadian Defence Forces
have each received four. The 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability consortium – members
of NATO and Partnership for Peace – received three C-17s in 2009. Qatar, the first
Middle East customer to order C-17s, received two C-17s in 2009 and holds options for
two more.
