The number of Trucks, Vans* and Special Purpose Vehicles (Light, Medium & Heavy) registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 120,000 - 125,000 vehicles and presumably new trucks registered are offset by old trucks being retired or sold over the border in China.

Use and purpose of alkaline water:
Alkaline water, also known as “gan sui” in Cantonese and “air abu” in Malay, is a clear solution of the salts sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate, and sometimes sodium phosphate.
Because it is often called “lye” water, it is frequently confused with lye or caustic soda, which is sodium hydroxide, a much harsher chemical that has limited culinary applications in the West.
In the Asian kitchen, alkaline water has few and specific uses. The characteristic springiness of Hong Kong style “mee” noodle is due to “gan sui”, which is added to noodle dough to firm up its texture, and give it a yellow tint.
It does the same for glutinous rice in “kee chang” (yellow alkaline glutinous rice dumplings) and in their Malay cousin, “kuih lopes”.
Steamed rice-flour dough, for example, in Nyonya “kuih kosui” and “ang koo kuih” skin, can also be given a firmer consistency by carefully measured amounts of alkaline water.
Dried cuttlefish or squid are sometimes briefly soaked in “gan sui” for the opposite effect - it makes them more tender when rehydrated.
As Asians do not fancy the slightly sour, acidic flavour of slowly fermented bread dough so beloved in the West, dim sum chefs add alkaline water to buns “pau” dough to neutralise any yeasty, sour overtones.
Alkaline water is sometimes used as a rising agent in the same way that baking soda is. For instance, it is stirred into “ma lai kou” batter, where it reacts with acids in the brown sugar to produce bubbles that yield a light, fluffy steamed cake.

I didn't keep the print of this photo, taken at Stockport on Monday 6th February 1978, but I had taken another of this vehicle earlier in the day at Macclesfield. I can't piece together exactly where this was, but it must be somewhere on the periphery of Mersey Square and the arches must belong to the bridge that carries the main A6 road across the river. Here, where the public conveniences and bus stops are, the Google street view camera car cannot pass.
A rather splendid 1930s lamp in the spandrel of the bridge ornaments its rather seedy surroundings. I see three steel poles, holding up nothing. Back in my bus driving days I was told that the bus company normally left the posts of disused bus stops in position. The post established the company's right to place a bus stop there. If the post were taken down, the company would have to re-apply for permission to use the site. Perhaps something of the sort is going on here.
Oh, the bus. It's a Leyland National, of course, of the 11351/1R variant ...i.e. 11.3m long with Leyland 0.510 engine, one-door bodywork and right-hand drive. It was only in these details that the boring "integral" Leyland National varied. For all practical purposes it was only the length and the provision of doors that differed from one vehicle to the next.
C-17 Globemaster III
Description and Purpose:
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is designed to fulfill military and humanitarian airlift
needs well into the 21st century. A high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed aircraft with a rearloading ramp, the C-17 can carry large combat equipment and troops or humanitarian aid
across international distances directly to small austere airfields anywhere in the world.
With a payload of 164,900 pounds, the C-17 can take off from a 7,000-foot airfield, fly
2,400 nautical miles, and land on a small, austere airfield in 3,000 feet or less. The C-17
is equipped with an externally blown flap system that allows a steep, low-speed final
approach and low landing speeds for routine short-field landings.
Customers:
Worldwide, Boeing has delivered 227 C-17s. Boeing’s program of record with the U.S.
Air Force is to design, build and deliver 223 C-17s through September 2012. Boeing has
delivered 207 C-17s to the USAF as of February 2011.
There are 20 C-17s in service with five international customers. In November 2010,
President Obama announced India’s preliminary agreement for the acquisition of 10 C-
17s. The U.S. Congress approved Kuwait’s letter of request in October 2010, regarding
the acquisition of one C-17. In January 2010, Boeing and the United Arab Emirates
announced that the UAE had agreed to acquire six C-17s in 2011 and 2012. The RAF
has acquired seven C-17s; the Royal Australian Air Force and Canadian Defence Forces
have each received four. The 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability consortium – members
of NATO and Partnership for Peace – received three C-17s in 2009. Qatar, the first
Middle East customer to order C-17s, received two C-17s in 2009 and holds options for
two more.

Coming of World War II and Ford's mental collapse
Ford had opposed the United States' entry into World War II and continued to believe that international business could generate the prosperity that would head off wars. Ford "insisted that war was the product of greedy financiers who sought profit in human destruction". In 1939, he went so far as to claim that the torpedoing of U.S. merchant ships by German submarines was the result of conspiratorial activities undertaken by financier war-makers. The financiers to whom he was referring was Ford's code for Jews; he had also accused Jews of fomenting the First World War. In the run-up to World War II and when the war erupted in 1939, he reported that he did not want to trade with belligerents. Like many other businessmen of the Great Depression era, he never liked or entirely trusted the Franklin Roosevelt Administration, and thought Roosevelt was inching the U.S. closer to war. Ford continued to do business with Nazi Germany, including the manufacture of war materiel.[45] However, he also agreed to build warplane engines for the British government. In early 1940, he boasted that Ford Motor Company would soon be able to produce 1,000 U.S. warplanes a day, even though it did not have an aircraft production facility at that time.: Ford was a prominent early member of the America First Committee against World War II involvement, but was forced to resign from its executive board when his involvement proved too controversial.
Beginning in 1940, with the requisitioning of between 100 and 200 French POWs to work as slave laborers, Ford-Werke contravened Article 31 of the 1929 Geneva Convention.
When Rolls-Royce sought a U.S. manufacturer as an additional source for the Merlin engine (as fitted to Spitfire and Hurricane fighters), Ford first agreed to do so and then reneged. He "lined up behind the war effort" when the U.S. entered in December 1941.
Willow Run
Before the U.S. entered the war, responding to President Roosevelt's call in December 1940 for the "Great Arsenal of Democracy", Ford directed the Ford Motor Company to construct a vast new purpose-built aircraft factory at Willow Run near Detroit, Michigan. Ford broke ground on Willow Run in the spring of 1941, B-24 component production began in May 1942, and the first complete B-24 came off the line in October 1942. At 3,500,000 sq ft (330,000 m2), it was the largest assembly line in the world at the time. At its peak in 1944, the Willow Run plant produced 650 B-24s per month, and by 1945 Ford was completing each B-24 in eighteen hours, with one rolling off the assembly line every 58 minutes. Ford produced 9,000 B-24s at Willow Run, half of the 18,000 total B-24s produced during the war.
Edsel's death
When Edsel Ford died of cancer in 1943, aged only 49, Henry Ford nominally resumed control of the company, but a series of strokes in the late 1930s had left him increasingly debilitated, and his mental ability was fading. Ford was increasingly sidelined, and others made decisions in his name. The company was controlled by a handful of senior executives led by Charles Sorensen, an important engineer and production executive at Ford; and Harry Bennett, the chief of Ford's Service Unit, Ford's paramilitary force that spied on, and enforced discipline upon, Ford employees. Ford grew jealous of the publicity Sorensen received and forced Sorensen out in 1944. Ford's incompetence led to discussions in Washington about how to restore the company, whether by wartime government fiat, or by instigating a coup among executives and directors.
Forced out
Nothing happened until 1945 when, with bankruptcy a serious risk, Ford's wife Clara and Edsel's widow Eleanor confronted him and demanded he cede control of the company to his grandson Henry Ford II. They threatened to sell off their stock, which amounted to three quarters of the company's total shares, if he refused. Ford was reportedly infuriated, but had no choice but to give in. better source needed] The young man took over and, as his first act of business, fired Harry Bennett.

Vitra Campus - Weil am Rhein (Germany) - VITRAHAUS
Herzog & de Meuron, 2010. As the purpose of the VitraHaus is to display home furnishings, the architects of the VitraHaus, Herzog & de Meuron, took up the idea of the "archetypal house", as the proportions and dimensions of the rooms bring to mind residential space that is familiar to us - the architects use the term "domestic scale". The individual "houses" which have the general characteristics of a showroom are with few exceptions glazed at the gable ends only. Superimposed in five storeys and overhanging in some cases by up to 15 metres, the twelve houses which each intersect the gables of the storey below create an almost chaotic whole.
From 1955 to 1981, the Vitra site in Weil am Rhein saw the successive addition of various manufacturing and warehouse structures that yielded a somewhat coincidental and improvised architectural composite. In 1981, most of these buildings were destroyed by a major fire.
Although insurance funds only covered a six-month interruption in production, the company did not wish to settle for anonymous standardized industrial structures or a solution with temporary facilities. The architecture was to be functional and offer a pleasant work environment while also fulfilling aesthetic requirements. Assigned to the architect Nicholas Grimshaw, this first project was followed by further buildings over the years, resulting in a heterogeneous ensemble of contemporary architecture: the Vitra Campus.
Vitra stands for an architectural concept that unites buildings by some of the most influential architects in the world at the Vitra Headquarters in Birsfelden (Switzerland) by Frank Gehri and on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany). We have here buildings of Jean Prouvé, Buckminster Fuller, Frank Gehri, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, Sanaa and Herzog and De Meuron

Dating from around 1835, Hexham station is one of the oldest purpose-built railway stations in the world. The Newcastle and Carlisle Railway was formed in 1829, and was opened in stages. The first section of that line to open for passenger trains was between Blaydon and Hexham, which was formally opened on 3 March 1835, with normal services beginning either the next day, or on 9 March 1835.
The line was extended from Hexham to Haydon Bridge on 28 June 1836. After the N&CR had been absorbed by the North Eastern Railway, Hexham became a junction station with the opening of the first section of the Border Counties Railway, between Hexham and Chollerford on 5 April 1858. The first section of a second branch, the Hexham and Allendale Railway (H&AR) was opened (for goods) in August 1867 - the H&AR, initially promoted to serve lead mines, opened for passengers on 1 March 1869.
The station has diminished in size and importance since the closure of the Allendale branch (to passengers on 22 September 1930, completely in 1950) and the Border Counties Railway (to passengers October 1956, all traffic 1958), both of which met the Tyne Valley line west of Hexham station. The bay platform used by both branch lines was located on the southern side and faced west; it was taken out of use in the early 1970s and the track lifted (the land now forms part of the station car park). The track layout has also been rationalised, with just a running loop and three sidings retained at the east end of the station along with the distinctive elevated signal box - this was built in 1896, is grade-II listed and one of only two such structures left on the line (the other being at Wylam)
Hexham Signal box is a type Noth East Railway type N5 overhead opened around 1918 and is fitted with a 60 lever frame and is still in use.
