The Royal Armouries began life as the main royal and national arsenal housed in the Tower of London. Indeed the Royal Armouries has occupied buildings within the Tower for making and storing arms, armour and military equipment for as long as the Tower itself has been in existence.
Early in the 19th century the nature and purpose of the museum began to change radically. Displays were gradually altered from exhibitions of curiosities to historically ‘accurate’ and logically organised displays designed to improve the visitor by illuminating the past.
Origins
The origins of the Armouries may be traced back to the working armoury of the medieval kings of England. The first recorded visitor to the Tower Armouries was in 1498, when entry was only by special permission. After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, the paying public was allowed in to marvel at new displays set up to celebrate the power and splendour of English monarchy.
The Armouries is one of the ancient institutions of the Tower of London, which have also included the Board of Ordnance, the Menagerie, the Royal Mint, the Jewel House, the Royal Observatory and the Tower Record Office. These institutions are the focus of a permanent exhibition in the White Tower – Powerhouse).
An important chapter in its development occurred in the early 15th century, with the emergence of the Office of Armoury as an offshoot of the Privy Wardrobe of the Tower. At this point it seems that the positions ‘Keeper of the King’s armour at the Tower of London’ (first mentioned in 1423) and the ‘Master of the Ordnance’ (first recorded in 1414) replaced the previous ‘Keeper of the Wardrobe’.
The offices of the Armoury and Ordnance were responsible for procuring and issuing a wide variety of military equipment. The Armoury concentrated on armour and edged weapons; the Ordnance concentrated on cannon, handguns and the more traditional bow and arrow. Developments in the art of war resulted in the Ordnance becoming the more important of the two organisations, and in 1670 the equipment and functions of the Office of Armoury passed to the Ordnance.
16th–17th centuries
By the end of the 16th century, some of the early visitors to the Tower began to record their impressions of the Armoury. Jacob Rathgar, secretary of Frederick, Duke of Wirtenburg, described what they were shown in 1592. Despite the presence of many fine pieces of artillery, Rathgar felt the collection did not compare with those in his native Germany for ‘they stand about in the greatest confusion and disorder’.
Paul Hentzner provided the first detailed description of the Armoury after a visit to London in 1598. He was shown many items belonging to Henry VIII, including a gilt suit of armour, and several historic cannon; among them two wooden pieces used to deceive the French at the siege of Boulogne in 1544.
The following year Joseph Platter, a Swiss traveller from Basle, visited the Tower and again paid attention to the personal armoury of Henry VIII, which he makes clear was located in the White Tower. Interestingly, reference is made to the cost of viewing the Armoury, with payments being made at four points in the building ‘to a servant appointed to receive the same’.
Rathgar’s complaint in 1592 about the disorderly appearance of the Armoury, repeated by the Duke of Stettin-Pomerania a decade later, suggests that little attention was paid to presentation in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
This situation was to change immediately after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, when two permanent public displays were set up, known as the Line of Kings and the Spanish Armoury.
The former, as the name suggests, was a row of figures representing the kings of England. They appeared on life-sized wooden horses wearing what was said to be their personal armour. The line was first recorded in the Tower in an inventory dated October 1660, and it is possible that the display was assembled to mark Charles II’s visit to the Tower of London in August that year, after his many years in exile.
The Spanish Armoury was a collection of fearsome-looking weapons, displayed alongside a few instruments of torture, claimed to have been taken from the Spanish Armada in 1588. However, the historical basis for this association was quite unsound, with few, if any, of the objects having Spanish connections.
17th–19th centuries
Towards the end of the 17th century, the Office of Ordnance added two new armouries’ displays to the visitor attractions at the Tower. These were housed in one of the largest and most prestigious buildings ever to be seen at the Tower – the Grand Storehouse – that was built on the high ground immediately north of the White Tower.
The third, and most fantastic, display was installed on the first floor in 1696. Under the supervision of John Harris of Eaton, tens of thousands of small arms, and a mass of elaborate wooden carvings, were used to create such diverse installations as the ‘Witch of Endor’, the ‘Back Bones of a Whale’, a huge organ, and a seven-headed monster.
In the great Artillery Hall stood the great guns of the artillery train. As time went by, however, the room increasingly took on the appearance of a museum of military power, in which cannon and other trophies captured from battlefields around the world were brought here and displayed.
Also to be seen were items of curiosity and historic interest. Perhaps one of the most infamous was the Tower ‘Rack to extort Confession’. Last prepared for use in January 1673, the rack had presumably been decommissioned by June 1675, as it then appears in the first of several Ordnance inventories.
Throughout the 18th and into the early 19th century, the Ordnance continued to adjust and embellish its four armouries at the Tower. In 1825, the decision was taken to re-locate the Line of Kings into a new building against the south side of the White Tower.
The Horse Armoury was architecturally significant as it represented the first purpose-built museum gallery at the Tower. With the move, the notable antiquarian Dr Samuel Meyerick reorganised the exhibits along more scholarly and scientific lines.
Moreover, the Ordnance began to release funds allowing objects to be bought for the first time to expand the collection in specific and targeted, areas. Together with inaugural efforts at object conservation, the first decisive steps had been taken to transform the Tower armouries into a modern museum.
19th–21st centuries
In 1838 the cost of visiting the Tower Armouries was cut from 3 shillings to 1 shilling and lowered again the following year to 6d. The effect of these reductions was to see visitor numbers rise from 10,500 in 1837 to 80,000 in 1839.

The MKC Objective Individual Utility Firearm is an OICW fit to several unique purposes. With a .50cal Carbine beneath a 30mm caseless GL, destructive power is the best purpose it can serve.
After the usual bulk amount was sold and shipped out to military forces, the weapon caught the eye of a Defense Ambassador from planet Byrus who was sitting in on a demonstration. He immediately referred it to the Byrus Mining Ambassador, who purchased 1,500 specialized units on his planetary and inter-planetary mining budget.
The weapon was then re-fitted to serve a greater purpose towards the miners. To start with, an incredibly small yet dense suppressor was added for the sole purpose of keeping the miners from going deaf from the reverberated sound of .50cal rounds bouncing off of cave walls. Then a muzzle break was attached to the launcher to increase the velocity of the grenade ordinance. Several extra grips were added across the side to accommodate the large hands of the miners, and a visual round counter was added to the grenade launcher. Finally, the weapon was re-colored to the traditional Byrus Safety Pink, and a simple, rugged night vision display was added.
The miners greatly appreciated the weapon, as it helped them to defend themselves from the monstrosities which inhabit areas below the surface of many planets. Also, the grenade launcher came in handy for blasting at loose rock.
The exact purpose of these small buildings is unknown, but after contacting the Senior Warden at Holkham National Nature Reserve he told me......
''Those structures were Bunkers used as part of a World War Two Training Ground for Commandos. I actually knew an 'old boy' who lived in Burnham Market up until he died as an old man in the early 2000's. He did a lot of his Commando Training there in the war''.

Around fifty Military Structures were built in the area of TF-8497 4564 to TF-8595 4563, these Structures vary in size from approximately 16ft to 49ft in length. These Buildings would appear to be some kind of World War Two Complex, probably for Practice or Training purposes. They were located at the northern edge of the saltmarsh close to 'Gun Hill' they also included Nissen Huts, Flat Roofed Concrete Structures and possibly a Pillbox, The Structures were removed post-war, I believe these small remaining Structures were probably part of that Complex.
The beginnings of a ''Raiding Force''......
In 1940 Prime Minister Winston Churchill, called for the creation of a small 'Raiding Force' in order to disrupt the Wehrmacht and boost British Morale. Lieutenant Colonel Dudley Clarke proposed a Force loosely based on the tactics of the Boer Commandos. Initially these new 'Commandos Units' were made up of soldiers from British Army Regiments, however in 1942 many Royal Marines Battalions were reorganised into Commandos, they were also supplemented by members of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
In 1940 Achnacarry Castle, the ancestral seat of Sir Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel, was brought into use as part of the new Training and Holding Wing for the Special Training Centre Lochailort. Due to the imminent closing of STC Lochailort and the realisation that a Centralised Training Establishment was needed to train the potential Commandos, Brigadier Charles Haydon established the Commando Depot in December of 1941. Prior to this each individual Commando Unit was responsible for the training of Commando Personnel. In early 1942 this was redesigned as the Commando Basic Training Centre, and, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Vaughan, the first prospective Commandos arrived to complete the centralised course. It then came under the authority of the Special Service Brigade. By this time a Drill Square had been laid down and pasture within the vicinity of the house had been replaced by asphalt. Nissen Huts now stood within the grounds around the Drill Square. These Huts contained accommodation for Men, housing between 25 and 40, dining halls, and washing rooms. Due to the secret nature of this training, the British Government prevented people from visiting much of Lochaber by preventing the crossing of non-residents over the Caledonian Canal.
The Commando Basic Training Centre trained both British Commandos and Foreign Nationals from occupied countries such as France, Greece, Norway and Poland as well as some Germans, part of No.10 (Inter-Allied) Commando, who were designated 'free Germans'. Contingents from the newly formed United States Army Rangers were also trained there. In 1946 after the War had come to the end it was decided a significant Commando capability was not needed in peacetime and the Commando Basic Training Centre at Achnacarry was disbanded. Between 1942 and 1946 over 25,000 Personnel were trained at Achnacarry and it is widely believed that it was the birthplace of modern 'Special Forces'. The 'Commando Memorial' a memorial to all Commandos of World War Two, now stands overlooking the Training Grounds at Achnacarry on a point that all potential Commandos would have passed on the way to Commando Basic Training Centre from the Spean Bridge railway station.
The prospective Commando arrived at the Spean Bridge railway station and marched 7 miles to Achnacarry where they began their Training, Officers, and their Men training side by side. Training for a prospective Commando consisted of an intensive regime of physical fitness and instruction in Survival, Orienteering and Vehicle Operation. This was alongside instruction on different Weapons Systems, Demolition Skills, Close-Quarter Combat as well as Amphibious and Cliff Assault. Any prospective Commando who failed to meet the standard was returned to their parent unit. The training was conducted with 'Live Rounds' in order to simulate battle as effectively as possible. This realistic training led to the deaths of a number of trainees. In 1943 the focus of the Commando Training shifted to more conventional methods of Warfare.
The purpose of visiting this factory was to assess how Rwanda can recapture the domestic market and increase export in steel products. He appreciated the achievements of the factory, encouraged its managers to increase production and reiterated the continued support of the Government of Rwanda. He concluded his visit in the Eastern Province, by touring the Rwamagana Industrial Park. He held deep discussions with the Province and District leaders on how this industrial park can contribute more to the development of the Rwandan economy.

The Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, England is the first purpose built mosque in the UK and reportedly in western Europe outside of Muslim Spain. It was commissioned by the linguist and orientialst Dr Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner with a donation from the Begum Shah Jahan, the Nawab Begum of the princely state of Bhopal.
The building is square with a three bay front articulated by four panelled piers with open turrets above linked by battlement type decoration. Built of dressed rubble stone, with stucco facing and a copper dome with finials. It was built by architects W. I. Chambers in Bath and Bargate stone. Its Onion Dome was once blue and gold and the entrance lay with fine mosaic. The fountain was initially built to be used for ablution but was later redesigned as an ornamental piece.

Pictures from our visit to our then-hometown's famous high school gymnasium in June 2009. The New Castle Fieldhouse is a 9,325-seat multi-purpose arena in New Castle, Indiana, USA. It is home to the New Castle Chrysler High School Trojans basketball team. Built in 1959, it is the largest high school basketball gym in the world.

The main basketball is a "sunken" floor, meaning that one enters the building at the top of the bleachers and the playing floor is below. The distance from the level where one enters to the peak of the roof is the same as the distance from where one enters to the playing floor. Seven times around the concourse at the top of the bleachers equals one mile.
With the addition of temporary bleachers the fieldhouse can be expanded to hold close to 10,000 spectators. The gym also hosts high school volleyball games, wrestling meets, gymnastics competitions, and gym classes during the school day. The top of the fieldhouse is bordered by a 1/7 of a mile rubber track. The track is used for gym classes as well as being open to the public in the mornings, evenings and during lunch period.

Manchester Cathedral still looks to all intents and purposes like an especially grand town parish church, exuding civic pride. This is historically speaking the truth, for the diocese of Manchester was only created in 1847 and before being raised to cathedral rank this was the parish and collegiate church of St Mary, St Denys and St George. It is nonetheless an imposing edifice, with reputedly the widest nave of any medieval church in England, owing to the former presence of a multitude of chantry chapels whose internal subdivisions have long since disappeared.
Though a parish church had existed here previously the bulk of the present building is the result of rebuilding in the 15th century when it was promoted to collegiate status. Stylistically the church is uniformly late Perpendicular, and though the upper half of the west tower is a Victorian addition it blends well with the remainder of the cathedral. Unfortunately the original sandstone did not age well, necessitating not only the complete renewal of the external stonework but also much of the internal surface too (which was in poor condition following an ill advised attempt to lighten the interior by applying 'roman cement' and hacking into the stonework to key the new layer, an unrestored section of original stonework at the west end of the nave illustrates the state it was reduced to). The work inside and out respected the original design faithfully, though the cathedral has lost most of its patina of age in the process, and thus despite being a medieval building it now appears as if it is a Victorian one.
Further restoration was necessary following bomb damage in World War II when a high-explosive demolished the lady chapel and much of the north east corner. The rebuilding didn't entirely follow the original form, a new (largely windowless) design was used for the lady chapel, the new north east window was reduced in size and a small chantry that formerly projected from the north wall was not rebuilt.
Another consequence of the bombing was the loss of all the pre-war stained glass. This was almost entirely Victorian and had made the interior rather gloomy so its loss is generally not mourned. Today the cathedral is adorned instead by some very vibrant examples of contemporary stained glass, most notably the sequence of five windows at the west end by Anthony Holloway providing bold splashes of colour in their abstract expressionism.
Despite all the restoration and renewal the cathedral still has much to offer, and whilst the stonework was largely replace there is much medieval woodwork remaining in the roofs and furnishings. The outstanding feature here are the early 16th century choir stalls, some of the very finest in the country with enjoyable misericord seats set beneath wonderfully rich canopies, some of the best late medieval wood carving to have survived.
Manchester is one of the most successful of the 'parish church cathedral' upgrades where new dioceses were formed, and whilst its form still betrays its origins as a collegiate church it possesses the scale, interest and dignity of a cathedral.
The cathedral is normally open to visitors daily.

I haven't had a spontaneous photo shoot with Curio in a long time. While I was taking photos for Bogart's next 52 weeks post (yes, way ahead of the game!), Curio started a performance. He had a BLAST with this chew toy. I guess chew toys are not just for puppies any more. . .
Oh, on a different note, I really wish I had my camera with me when I went down to visit Grigsby. I took down one of those treat balls that make you work for your food. After all, I don't want him bored. And I turned on the radio, too. Well, when I was about to go through the door, Curio reached up and grabbed hold of my thigh. He does that when he wants to be carried. I obliged. I picked up Curio and entered the room. Truthfully, I wasn't sure how they would interact. Grigsby looked at Curio with interest, while Curio looked at Grigsby's food with interest. Then Grigsby let out these adorable trill-y meeps, each one punctuated with a upward bob to the head. No aggression whatsoever. Not even one ounce. Just a pleasant hello, who are you. Curio had to be redirected from the abundant food, but Grigsby plopped on the floor and calmly watched his visitor, intermittently meeping his commentary.
BTW, when I get a chance, I have DOZENS of adorable Curio shots with the chew toy. It'll be a challenge to choose my favorites to post. This one is just a tiny taste, only posted because I thought it was humorous how Curio often held the toy out over the edge with one paw. Goofy boy!

St Thomas the Apostle
In 1844 a small group started to meet at Leesfield House for the purpose of responding to the spiritual needs of the expanding population. At the first meeting on March 4th 1844 it was decided to build a church at Leesfield and Mr George Taylor gave the site in lieu of his subscription of £100. This church was St Thomas Leesfield and the site was known as ‘Bonfire Half Acre’ with the chancel of the church being built on ‘Mischief Plot’.
The design of the church by architect Mr Shellard was perpendicular Gothic, with a hammer beam roof lit by dormer windows and stained open wood tracery, and involved the use of many ancient looking figure heads both inside and outside the building. The Church is built of coursed stone with ashlar surrounds to openings, quoins, parapets etc. There is a bell tower at the west with a slate covered roof, the nave roof is of slate and has a double pitched aisle on both sides.
The beauty of St Thomas Leesfield is evident as soon as you walk in, with a seating capacity of 600. It has numerous stained glass windows, several of which are by the renowned Belgian stained glass artist, Jean Baptiste Capronnier. The stone font with beautiful carved wood is situated at the rear of the church.
The foundation stone was laid on October 9th 1844 by the Chancellor of the Diocese of Chester in the presence of the Bishop of Chester along with supporters of the project.
On the feast of St Michael and All Angels September 29th 1846 the Parish of Leesfield was constituted with Canon Robert Whittaker as incumbent, but with services continuing at Leesfield House along with a new Sunday School until the church was ready.
In 1847 the new Diocese of Manchester was formed from Chester and in 1848 Manchester’s first bishop consecrated the church of St Thomas the Apostle, Leesfield on June 21st, along with the surrounding burial ground.
Baptisms, marriages and all services followed the Book of Common Prayer. The organ was installed in the west gallery in 1860 followed by the clock and installation in the tower of a full peal of 8 bells. The tower bells were first rung and the clock started on Whit Friday May 25th 1866.
There was also urgent need for a parish day school and a larger space for Sunday School which was agreed and the foundation stone for the original school building was laid on Whit Friday June 2nd 1880.
The Church is grade II* listed, and has been successful in gaining grant assistance for two phases of repair work from English Heritage. This has enabled the nave, aisles, vestry and south porch to be restored; the most recent renovation being between 1995 and 2004 with the work totalling around £1 million.
Main purpose of my early start yesterday (Sunday) was to visit the Sand Martin colony @ Salthouse. The tidal surge a few years ago did them a favour by refacing the sand cliff & the Sand Martin's soon adopted it. I have an affinity with them as my childhood was spent in an area surrounded by big sand pits with 100's of Sand Martins. A small selection of the many photos I took sitting on the shingle. So much activity as it seemed to be a fledging day so well worth the trip
Purpose built and used as a Police Station from 1905 to 2003. "County Police" above the door refers to Berkshire Constabulary which was formed in 1856. Berkshire Constabulary subsumed several smaller police forces during its existence, including the Abingdon Borough Police, Maidenhead Borough Police, Newbury Borough Police, Wallingford Borough Police, Wantage Borough Police and Windsor Borough Police. On 1 April 1968 Thames Valley Police was formed by amalgamating Berkshire Constabulary with Buckinghamshire Constabulary, the Oxford City Police, the Oxfordshire Constabulary and the Reading Borough Police. This Grade II listed building now contains apartments.
