Focus on Eldercare's response to COVID-19

At the purpose when the noxious impacts of COVID-19 showed first in Wuhan, the entire city and therefore the entire of Hubei Province ground to a halt. The lockdown of Wuhan brought remarkable torment and threatening difficulties for several individual occupants therein first focus. Presently, COVID-19 represents those equivalent difficulties for individuals and social welfare frameworks all-inclusive. Especially, it tests our aggregate endeavors to believe one another, particularly the foremost defenseless among us.

As a populace, individuals quite 70 will generally have more fragile insusceptible frameworks and progressively fundamental conditions that obstruct their capacity to battle the infection. They're likewise sure to dwell on bunch day to day environments, nearby people. Floods of COVID-19 passings in nursing homes — first within the Seattle territory, at that time on the brink of Sacramento and now during the country — have underscored this inauspicious reality. Up until now, Californians quite 65 have made up, at any rate, a fourth of the state's affirmed instances of COVID-19.

Be that because it may, guidelines, especially for helping living offices, are unsafely failing to satisfy the expectations in protecting California's older folks from this infection. Luck, Gov. Gavin Newsom's plan on Aging activity, as of now ongoing, presents an opportunity to forcefully address this peril and find how to secure an enormous number of more seasoned Americans.

Helped living focuses are an aid to the Eldercare business and therefore the enormous corporate proprietors that currently command the market. Simultaneously, in any case, an absence of guideline and oversight of staffing levels and capabilities — particularly prerequisites for on-location doctors and much prepared clinical experts — has left the business defenseless against misuse and unfortunate results. One glaring issue that has got to be tended to: helped living focuses are directed by the state Department of Social Services rather than the Department of Public Health.

In any case, it helped to measure maybe a piece of social welfare and clinical consideration conveyance framework, not only a direction for living. Propelled a year ago, Newsom's plan on Aging has framed a warning advisory group, is holding open gatherings and within the fall is planned to offer a 10-year plan which will address issues from lodging and vagrancy to crisis readiness to manhandle and disrespect. The venture has made a "Value Committee" to urge a contribution from a progressively differing gathering of residents and associations, including agents of the crippled network, Native Americans and other ethnic minorities.

Considering the spreading coronavirus general wellbeing emerging, it's basic that the representative's plan on Aging takes on an expansive and genuine open arrangement job. We weren't bothered with elevated level clichés for tending to the wants of the old. We'd like solid arrangements, solid guidelines with implementation teeth and a guarantee to continued oversight.

The Age of COVID-19

Older people who get themselves out of the blue alone without authority over their conditions are at specific hazards for an assortment of serious, even hazardous, physical and psychological well-being conditions, including a subjective decrease. Limitations on the opportunity of development ought to be proportionate and not founded solely on age.

COVID-19, as different irresistible melodies, represents a higher hazard to populaces that live in nearness. This hazard is especially intense in nursing or matured consideration offices, where the infection can spread quickly and has just brought about numerous passings. About 1.5 million older people individuals live in the nursing homes in the US, barring helped living offices and different settings making nearness.

Twenty-three individuals kicked the bucket in a flare-up at an office in Washington State in February and March, and the US Centers for Disease Control detailed 400 additional cases in offices as of April 1. On March 31, wellbeing experts in the Grand East district of France detailed 570 passings of older people in nursing homes.

Older people often end up in nursing homes due to governments' inability to offer adequate social types of assistance for individuals to live freely in the network, approaches that have put millions at included danger of getting the infection as a result of their organization. Governments ought to guarantee the progression of network-based administrations with the goal that individuals don't wind up in organizations without different alternatives.

Expound now on the roles played via care laborers in continuing the lives of the old during that emergency, and who, however dreadful themselves, by and by remain day in and outing inside the bounds of their wards to offer fundamental consideration.

Care supervisor Chang, the woman in charge of the consideration laborers among whom I led my hands-on work, coordinated the change of her ward into a self-sufficient fixed of a unit of care. The passage to her floor is carefully monitored; just fundamental conveyances are permitted, for instance, nourishment and clothing. Since nobody can enter or leave the structure, the flask for the older was transformed into a dozing region for care laborers. Despite the very fact that a lot of consideration laborers have their circle of relatives to require care of, they put that piece of their life under the control of others. Care specialist Lin, whose spouse died at the start of the pandemic, did not have the chance to completely grieve his passing due to incessant understaffing at Sunlight. She came back to figure following the burial service, despite realizing that she not, at now expected to figure at Sunlight to hide her significant other's clinical costs. Lin's arrival says much regarding her promise to her calling, to her colleagues, and to the old she had come to understand so well. My examination with care laborers recommends that it's an enthusiastic association and an awareness of other's expectations that propels them to remain the end of the day in care work. This is often borne out immediately.

Carefully add China is often seen as being grimy and unfortunate, thanks to an excellent extension to its nearby hook up with the realistic consideration required by slight, skilled bodies. Chinese consideration laborers are for the foremost part provincial to urban transients or urban specialists laid far away from previous state-claimed processing plants. In any case, direct consideration is intricate. In any case, its unpredictability goes unrecognized, or maybe disregarded by institutional powers that organize benefits and generalize the old as bodies to chip away at, to the disregard of their social-passionate necessities. As is valid with Sunlight, things which might typically undermine the keenness of care laborers, for instance, the absence of institutional acknowledgment for his or her enthusiastic work, are required to be postponed. Care specialists are currently centered around a shared objective: ensuring the gift assistance of the older. COVID-19 propels care laborers to consider what kind of care is required and the way to offer that care. It fills in as a channel through which the elemental beliefs of care are observed. Care is about common human weakness and our intrinsic association. Care laborers at Sunlight, in their aggregate every minute of everyday endeavors to secure the older, typify this ethic through their consideration. May the respectful regard, they hold of the older in their consideration redound on them and everyone consideration laborers overall who are fighting this pandemic on the bleeding edge!

Like the consideration laborers at Sunlight, the laborers in numerous nations are regarded human life so that we cannot be embarrassed to return clean with the leading edge about ourselves. Salute the spearheading staff who salutes our purposeful endeavors to handle the pandemic in numerous settings around the globe, within the daylight, yet additionally to ensure that veterans are appropriately treated, took care of and washed.

We all hope and pray that the coronavirus will soon be controlled and subdued. And that when the crisis is behind us, that we continue the important work of protecting the elderly and other vulnerable segments of our citizenry.

Information is quoted from the Historic Environment Record for H BUILDING, Malvern, UK

The building, having military purposes and designated locally as H building, sits on a former Government Research site in Malvern, Worcestershire at Grid Ref SO 786 447. This site was the home of the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) from 1946. It has been owned by QinetiQ since 2001 and is in the process (October 2017 to February 2018) of being sold for redevelopment.

This unique building has at its heart a ‘Rotor’ bunker with attached buildings to house radar screens and operators as well as plant such as emergency generators. Twenty nine Rotor operational underground bunkers were built in great urgency around Britain to modernise the national air defence network, following the Soviet nuclear test in 1949. Two factors make H building’s construction and purpose unique; this prototype is the only Rotor bunker built above ground and it was the home to National Air Defence government research for 30 years. This example of a ROTOR bunker is unique instead of being buried, it was built above ground to save time and expense, as it was not required to be below ground for its research purpose.

H Building was the prototype version of the Rotor project R4 Sector Operations Centre air defence bunkers. Construction began in August 1952 with great urgency - work went on 24 hours a day under arc lights. The main bunker is constructed from cross bonded engineering bricks to

form walls more than 2 feet thick in a rectangle approximately 65ft x 50ft. The two internal floors are suspended from the ceiling. The original surrounding buildings comprise, two radar control and operator rooms, offices and machine plant.

The building was in generally good order and complete. The internal layout of the bunker remains as originally designed. The internal surfaces and services have been maintained and modernised over the 55 years since its construction (Figure 3). The first floor has been closed over.

There are some later external building additions around the periphery to provide additional accommodation.

In parts of the building the suspended floor remains, with 1950s vintage fittings beneath such as patch panels and ventilation ducts.

The building has been empty since the Defence Science & Technology Laboratories [Dstl] moved out in October 2008

As lead for radar research, RRE was responsible for the design of both the replacement radars for the Chain Home radars and the command and control systems for UK National Air Defence.

Project Rotor was based around the Type 80 radar and Type 13 height finder. The first prototype type 80 was built at Malvern in 1953 code named Green Garlic. Live radar feeds against aircraft sorties, were fed into the building to carry out trials of new methods plotting and reporting air activity

A major upgrade of the UK radar network was planned in the late 1950s – Project ‘Linesman’ (military) / ‘Mediator’ (civil) – based around Type 84 / 85 primary radars and the HF200 height finder. A prototype type 85 radar (Blue Yeoman) was built adjacent to H Building in 1959. live radar returns were piped into H Building.

Subsequently a scheme to combine the military and civil radar networks was proposed. The building supported the research for the fully computerised air defence scheme known as Linesman, developed in the 1960s, and a more integrated and flexible system (United Kingdom Air Defence Ground Environment or UKADGE) in the 1970s.

The building was then used for various research purposes until the government relinquished the main site to QinetiQ in 2001. Government scientists continued to use the building until 2008. Throughout its life access was strictly controlled by a dedicated pass sytem.

Notable civil spin-offs from the research in this building include the invention of touch screens and the whole UK Civil Air Traffic Control system which set the standard for Europe.

Ouch! Translating Latin is hard to do. Never mind that the phrases come out sounding like Yoda talk. It's the difficulty of pinning down the words themselves that's the greatest challenge.

The question marks in brackets mark text that I could not make sense of.

One line has something to do with the "Iberian Sea," which I think is the western Mediterranean, known also as the Mar de Alborán. But what does that have to do with Soler? He died in Gibraltar, and the waters of the western Mediterranean touch Gibraltar's shores.

There's also a mention of ill health, perhaps related to age.

I was thoroughly baffled by the line that suggested Soler died in October in Kalenda. Wikipedia says he died in Gibraltar in September. Where or what "Kalenda" is

Anyway, here's what Wikipedia has to say about him in English:

Monsignor Dr. Mariano Soler (born 25 March 1846 in San Carlos - deceased 26 September 1908 in Gibraltar) was a Uruguayan cleric and the first Roman Catholic archbishop of Montevideo, Uruguay.

A student at the South American College in Rome, he obtained his doctorate in Canon Law.

He was an outstanding intellectual in the area of the scientific and philosophical culture of Uruguay, and a strong defender of the ecclesiastical institutions (i.e., the prerogatives of Roman Catholic church). He was known to be a staunch opponent of the theory of natural selection of Charles Darwin an of Darwinism generally.

He wrote a large number of articles of religious character and served as a lecturer in philosophy. He was also elected a deputy by the department of Canelones Department.

Australia's first purpose built government office - a home for the Colonial Treasury

Notes from the NSW Treasury website:

"New South Wales's Colonial Treasury Department was established on the 28 April 1824 and was located at the official residence of the first Colonial Treasurer, Mr William Balcombe. Balcombe's private quarters and the Treasury office were housed under the one roof, his wife and children upstairs, the government transactions attended to below. The Treasury building, located on the western corner of Bent and O'Connell Streets Sydney had been built by convict labour for William Cox the Paymaster of the 102nd Regiment just prior to Balcombe's arrival in the Colony.

"The security at O'Connell Street was not considered adequate and in May 1827 the Treasury was directed to move to a building within the Barrack Walls at Barrack Square where the security arrangements were considered more adequate for safeguarding the Civil and Military money of the Government.

"Over the following decades the Colonial Treasury was relocated on a number of occasions for reasons of either security or financial expediency. The Department remained, however, close to the Governor's domain, the precincts of Parliament House, the Colonial Secretary and later the Premier.

"In 1840 the Colonial Treasury together with the Auditor General's Office occupied the dilapidated residence of an earlier Colonial Secretary Mr Alexander McLeay The building occupied land that stood between the sites of the future Lands and Education Departments and soon to be demolished to make way for the dedication of Loftus Street.

"The new Colonial Treasury building in Macquarie Street, commenced in 1849, was the first purpose-built government office in Sydney. This elegant sandstone building with slate roof was designed by the Colonial Architect Mortimer William Lewis and was sited on land which had been part of the Governor's Domain, his vineyard.

"The Treasury building opened for the transaction of business on the 17 October 1851 having been completed by Edmund Blacket and was shared with the Audit Office. The Treasury entrance was on Macquarie Street, the Audit Office entered from Bridge Street.

"The old Treasury Building, 117-119 Macquarie Street, Sydney now forms part of the Inter-Continental Hotel. Heritage architects have described the building as having 'fine Georgian elevations of exceptional scale, proportion and detailing' contributing 'greatly to the sandstone townscape aesthetic of the Government precinct as well as being an excellent example of the craft work of its period".

Hong Kong Transport - Trucks

The Hong Kong Truck Culture

The number of Trucks, Vans* and Special Purpose Vehicles (Light, Medium & Heavy) registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 120,000 - 125,000 vehicles and presumably new trucks registered are offset by old trucks being retired or sold over the border in China.

*Vans are classified as Light Goods Vehicles and are not shown in this album

In Hong Kong Trucks are classified as GOODS VEHICLES By the Transport Department - see below

☛Light Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight not exceeding 5.5 tonnes.

☛Medium Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 5.5 tonnes but not exceeding 24 tonnes.

☛Heavy Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 24 tonnes but not exceeding 38 tonnes.

The major truck types you tend to see in urban areas are trucks carrying construction materials or waste, dump trucks, concrete mixers and all sizes of delivery trucks... outside of the urban areas it is container trucks and large trucks carrying construction materials.

The following brands of Trucks can be seen on the streets of Hong Kong and include:-

Beiben ✚ Bell ✚ CAMC ✚ CNHTC ✚ DAF ✚ Dennis ✚ Dong Feng ✚ FAW ✚ Fuso ✚ Foton ✚ Ford ✚ Hino ✚ Howo ✚ Hyundai ✚ Isuzu ✚ Iveco ✚ JAC ✚ Kato ✚ KIA ✚ Liebherr ✚ MAN ✚ Mercedes Benz ✚ Mitsubishi ✚ Nissan ✚ Renault ✚ Scania ✚ Shacman ✚ Sinotruk ✚ Suzuki ✚ Toyota ✚ UD ✚ Volvo ✚ Zoomlion

Hong Kong is a brand conscious place even for trucks (!) hence the popularity of the European brands, Scania and Man are very popular and even the older trucks look the business and they are utterly reliable.

Isuzu is the market leader in terms of sale volume for all types of trucks.

The five-storey, 432,000 square foot McCormick’s factory was opened in 1914 and produced candy and cookie products until its closure in early 2007. Built of concrete and steel and constructed to be fireproof, at the time it was considered one of the finest factories in North America. Its most distinct architectural features are its white terra cotta glaze and the extensive window coverage, which gave it the nickname “the Sunshine Palace”.

The first floor contains storage space, flour and sugar silos, administrative offices, and a bakery with long conveyor belt ovens which still remain there today.

Internal view of the Bunker room

Historic Environment Record for H BUILDING, Malvern, UK

The building was generally in good order and complete. The internal layout of the bunker remains as originally designed. The internal surfaces and services have been maintained and modernised over the 55 years since its construction.

Chronology

1952 - Construction work is begun. The layout of the bunker area duplicates the underground version built at RAF Bawburgh.

1953 - Construction work is largely completed.

1954 - The building is equipped and ready for experiments.

1956-1958 - Addition of 2nd storey to offices

1957-1960 - Experiments of automatic tracking, novel plot projection systems and data management and communications systems tested.

1960-1970 - Project Linesman mediator experiments carried out including a novel display technique known as a Touch screen ( A World First)

TOUCHSCREEN

A team led by Eric Johnson in H building at Malvern. RRE Tech Note 721 states: This device, the Touch Sensitive Electronic Data Display, or more shortly the ‘Touch Display’, appears to have the potential to provide a very efficient coupling between man and machine. (E A Johnson 1966). See also patent GB 1172222.

Information From Hugh Williams/mraths

1980-1990 - During this period experiments are moved to another building and H building is underused.

1990-1993 - The building was re-purposed and the bunker (room H57) had the first floor closed over to add extra floor area.

2008- The bunker was used until late 2008 for classified research / Joint intelligence centre

2020 - The building was demolished as part of the redevelopment of the site.

It seems the hottest thing on the weird film bandwagon is Eastman 2238. In its actual purpose, this is a film designed to create an archival B&W positive film from either colour or B&W negatives. When it comes to these images, I feel I'm darn close to finding the right time, but you know I'm happy with what I'm seeing. You have a lovely strong contrast without it being overpowering, the images are sharp, fine-grained, and have great potential. The EI is right; I think another 30" in the soup will take that edge off.

Dali City, formerly known as Tali, is the county-level seat of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Yunnan,

Similar to Carlisle in England, Dali City is not a single city but a county-sized area called a city for administrative purposes. Transportation to "Dali" usually arrives at the modern industrial city called Dali but locally distinguished by its former name Xiaguan. Travelers to and discussion of "Dali", however, usually refers to the old town located about an hour away. The old town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Yunnan, known for its natural scenery, historical and cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife.

HISTORY

The Dali area was formerly known as Jumie (苴咩, Jūmiē). The old town was the medieval capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao (fl. 8th and 9th centuries) and the Kingdom of Dali (937–1253). That city was razed and its records burnt during its conquest by China's Mongolian Yuan Dynasty. The present old town was organized in the late 14th century under the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The area became significantly Muslim (Hui) under the Yuan and Ming and was the center of the Panthay Rebellion against the Qing from 1856–1863. It was severely damaged during a massive earthquake in 1925.

Rail and then air transport have permitted the area (particularly Dali Old Town) to become accessible to tourists in the 20th century. It is now one of China's official tourist cities and, along with nearby Lijiang, one of the most popular. To preserve the appeal of the old town, industrial development is restricted to areas such as Xiaguan while building codes mandate new construction the old town and surrounding countryside must conform to the traditional Chinese style, with tiled roofs and brick, plaster, or white-washed walls.

GEOGRAPHY

Dali City is northwest of the provincial capital, Kunming: about 40 minutes by air or 7 hours by train.

Dali is located on a fertile plateau between the Cangshan Range to the west and Erhai lake to the east. It has traditionally been settled by the Bai and Yi minorities. It is also the capital of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.

SITES OF INTEREST

Dali is one of Yunnan's most popular tourist destinations. Sights include:

- Dali museum

- Chong Sheng Temple

- Guanyin Palace of Copper Rain (rebuilt in 1999)

- Jianji Great Bell of Nanzhao (recast in 1997)

- Three Pagodas

- Butterfly Spring

- Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils film city

Xizhou: a historical town famed for its architecture and woodwork

- Shaxi: a historical town in Jianchuan County on the ancient tea route

- Shuang lang: on the opposite side of the lake, once a small fishing village, now a rather high-class tourist destination, most buildings and businesses having overtaken the village since 2012. The coast is now completely built up by tourism estates.

ECONOMY

Much of the local economy now centers around tourism and services catering to travelers.

Historically, Dali was able to control some of the trade between India and China and independently famed for the woodworkers of Xizhou (喜州, Xǐzhōu) and for its high-quality marble, used both for construction and decorative objects. It was so prominent in the latter that the modern Chinese word for marble is literally "Dali stone" (大理石, dàlǐshí).

There is also local tea

TRANSPORTATION

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Local transport includes busses, taxis, bicycles, and boats on Erhai Lake. Local busses 4 & 8 provide service from Xiaguan to the old town (1 hr).

AIR

Dali Airport (DLU) is a domestic airport about 13 km (8.1 mi) east of Xiaguan on Weishan or Airport Rd. Taxis run about 60 RMB to Xiaguan or 90 RMB to the old town.[citation needed] It services (as of 2014) Kunming (20 min), Xishuangbanna (25 min), Chongqing (70 min), Chengdu (80 min), Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Guiyuan.

ROAD

Dali (i.e., Xiaguan) is connected to Kunming and points east by the Hangrui Expressway (G56), which also runs west to Ruili on the Burmese border. The Dali Expressway (G56₁₁) is a spur connecting it with Lijiang. The road to the old town is China National Highway 214, which connects to the expresseway to Lijiang north of the lake. It also runs south from Xiaguan to Menghai near the Burmese border.

Long-distance busses run from the old town's west gate to Kunming (about 4½ hrs), Lijiang, and Shangri-La. Every Monday, service is also available to Shaping for its market.

Long-distance busses run from Xiaguan's stations on Jianshe Road.

RAIL

Dali (i.e., Xiaguan) has rail connections with daily service to Kunming via the Guangtong-Dali Railway and Lijiang via the Dali-Lijiang Railway. Service to Kunming usually consists of one train during the day and two trains running overnight, with sleeper cars. As the railway network expands in Yunnan, train service will become available to Shangri-La County and Ruili.

CLIMATE

Its low latitude tempered by its high elevation, Dali has a mild subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb) with short, mild, dry winters and warm, rainy summers. Frost may occur in winter but the days still generally warm up to 15 °C or more. During summer, a majority of the days features some rainfall and daytime temperatures rise to 24 °C. A great majority of the year's rainfall occurs from June to October. December 2013 was particularly marked for its high snowfall.

WIKIPEDIA

Somewhat disappointed that there was no train running south I drove around town for the self-guided tour. I found out a good reason why the train was not running, a track gang working on the line. It did afford me the opportunity to scout out the very expansive Lafarge Cement Plant east of the rr yard. From what I've read and the signage at the mill, it is the largest cement plant in the world. Didn't make up for lack of train movement but interesting nonetheless. The next morning, before leaving town I checked out the rr again and found the same track gang at the same location working at the corner of 10th and Cavanaugh in Alpena, MI. No train today! But anytime I find streets with interesting names or meanings, well you know.

Craftivists #wellMAKING Garden demonstrates public’s desire for meaningful activity

More than 750 knitted, crocheted and stitched flowers made an eye-catching focal point at the Craftivists #wellMAKING Garden exhibition on Tuesday, the culmination of a six month project that saw over 50 stitch-ins held across the UK.

Funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council and run jointly between Craftivist Collective, Falmouth University, Arts for Health and Voluntary Arts, the aim of the #wellMAKING project was to encourage people to think about the nature of wellbeing using craft as a reflective tool.

With the World Health Organisation including “contributing to society” as one of their paths to wellbeing, organisers encouraged people to think about how they could be the best version of themselves in order to make the world a better place.

Feedback gathered via a dedicated app and at events around the country was overwhelmingly positive, with participants reporting numerous benefits from their craftivism experience:

“This project has helped me to engage other people in crafting and with activism. It’s helpful to have a ‘thing’ to do whilst you talk. It gives you reflection time.”

“Creating gave me confidence to make change in myself and society around me.”

“Crafting encourages me not to buy cheaply made sweatshop clothes because I value the time and effort that workers have put in more than the low prices charged for some fashion goods.”

“Before this project I didn’t think about how crafting contributes to society. Now I realise the many different levels that it can impact on and how we communicate with each other through craft. Crafting, art and making can break down social barriers.”

“While I was making the flower I thought a lot about the connection between flowers or plants and human development. We’ll only realise our potential if we are in the right soil type.”

More than 70 people attended Tuesday’s sold out event in Aldgate East, London, to see the floral exhibition and hear talks from project supporters including John McMahon, Head of Learning & Talent at Crafts Council, and George McKay, professor of media studies at East Anglia University.

The evening ended with a group discussion where many of those gathered expressed an interest in seeing the project continue. A number of events have already been planned, which will see the floral installation tour the UK, as well as groups creating their own versions.

Organiser Sarah Corbett, founder of Craftivist Collective, said: “Craftivism brings people together and gives us purpose. We’ve had all sorts of people involved, young, old, male, female, bloggers, crafters, activists, NGOs, galleries, community groups. It shows that people really want craft with meaning and purpose. They love craft, but they also love to use craft as a tool to reflect critically on how they can contribute to making the world a better place. People took up the project in their own way but still with that ethos of critical thinking. It will be exciting, now that people have the tools, to see how they continue to grow and develop what we’ve started.”

how do you appeal to other people on purpose

it is very carefully planned i know

alcoholic beverages have chosen not to help us!

roll up your drugs in the ground

nineteen year old sleepover

change it if you can, protect it if you can

in retrospect, that's what it is, what it means, to get older

at least in a neon art exhibit full of broken televisions and graph paper

straight out of tenth grade geometry, pink and blue highlighters blocking out designs

your hands are black from ink, also

from writing or sending something, i won't know which one

i think about your dental records often

electric heat drying your skin

when can we go outside

when can we go outside

when can we go outside

you're on the phone to me last night lighting something to smoke

something was very bright and distracting you

i thought that was good

you said my hands hurt it's so cold walking home

so i'll just make my lungs hurt

well i'll just make my throat hurt

i'll just make my brain hurt

your stomach controls your emotions when you really love someone

and this may or may not be connected to how close they place themselves in proximity to you

chemical imbalances

the idea of being next to the person i have been thinking about for a long time

scares me infinitely

and nothing seems more comforting, actually

everything i have been doing feels like an accident

i called you late at night on accident

i ate two pears and three tangerines on accident

i did not finish the song i was writing because i did not believe in it on accident

i forgot to take pictures on accident

i just didn't want to, sometimes i don't want to anymore

you said you were going to watch a documentary on elephants one time

i watched a documentary on the cold war with my grandfather and then i watched an educational television show on how to build a casket with my grandfather

and i thought that was an accurate representation of humanity, bed sheets, photography, ethical reasoning, and bread

watching a documentary on how caskets are made

molding steel handles shaped like the last supper on all four sides

a crucifix inside, on the science channel

listen to seventeen records in one day

i want someone to write me an angry letter about how stupid i am

so that i will actually get up and do something with these two weeks in front of me

i want someone to tell me that i am lazy and predictable and that i never do anything remotely interesting so that i will say, "ok" and then i will go do something that i will think is interesting that i will not tell anyone about

instead of actually letting all of those things be true

god damn it!

you made fun of my autographed lp of sung tongs

and then i made fun of it too and that felt good

i told you that circuit city closed

you told me that tgi fridays closed

i told you that office max closed

you told me this was the stage of wal-mart takeover that was predicted ten years ago when all all the small stores owned by people you could see were already closed and now other corporations are closing and pretty soon it will just be wal mart everywhere

i know you are right but it is weird for a conspiracy theory to be sort of right

i said i don't think it will be the only store but then i said that i think it will be the only store in some places

and you said that then people would be forced to go there and then it will be the only place eventually after we are dead maybe

and i said ha ha after we are dead ha ha

but as if smaller scales of capitalism are any more considerate of people

participate and pass out. pass out. pass out.

my mom will not understand this shit, ever, me either, i guess

and you told me that you wished you were a hairdresser

i said go for it

i said i wished i could be a photographer

you said, i would tell you to go for it but i think that when you said go for it that it was a cop out and i should tell both of us to be realistic

and i said yeah i know and then i said i was sorry

and then after a while the space heater was adequate

i thought i saw your face on the side of a building but it wasn't you it was just someone who sort of looked like you, but not that much

There are many explanations of the origin of the word "jeep," all of which have proven difficult to verify. One notion holds that the vehicle bore the designation "GP" (for "Government Purposes" or "General Purpose"), which was phonetically slurred into the word jeep. However, R. Lee Ermey, on his television series Mail Call, disputes this, saying that the vehicle was designed for specific duties, and was never referred to as "General Purpose" and it is highly unlikely that the average jeep-driving GI would have been familiar with this designation. The Ford GPW abbreviation actually meant (G for government use, P to designate its 80-inch (2,000 mm) wheelbase and W to indicate its Willys-Overland designed engine).

Many, including Ermey, suggest that soldiers at the time were so impressed with the new vehicles that they informally named it after Eugene the Jeep, a character in the Popeye cartoons created by E. C. Segar. Eugene the Jeep was Popeye's "jungle pet" and was "small, able to move between dimensions and could solve seemingly impossible problems."[1]

Words of the Fighting Forces by Clinton A. Sanders, a dictionary of military slang, published in 1942, in the library at The Pentagon gives this definition:

Jeep: A four-wheel drive vehicle of one-half- to one-and-one-half-ton capacity for reconnaissance or other army duty. A term applied to the bantam-cars, and occasionally to other motor vehicles (U.S.A.) in the Air Corps, the Link Trainer; in the armored forces, the ½-ton command vehicle. Also referred to as "any small plane, helicopter, or gadget."

This definition is supported by the use of the term "jeep carrier" to refer to the Navy's small escort carriers.

Early in 1941, Willys-Overland demonstrated the vehicle's off-road capability by having it drive up the steps of the United States Capitol, driven by Willy's test driver Irving "Red" Haussman, who had recently heard soldiers at Fort Holabird calling it a "jeep." When asked by syndicated columnist Katherine Hillyer for the Washington Daily News (or by a bystander, according to another account) what it was called, Irving answered, "It's a jeep."

Katherine Hillyer's article was published nationally on February 20, 1941, and included a picture of the vehicle with the caption:

LAWMAKERS TAKE A RIDE- With Senator Meade, of New York, at the wheel, and Representative Thomas, of New Jersey, sitting beside him, one of the Army's new scout cars, known as "jeeps" or "quads", climbs up the Capitol steps in a demonstration yesterday. Soldiers in the rear seat for gunners were unperturbed.

This exposure caused all other jeep references to fade, leaving the 4x4 with the name. The term was also in military slang use to mean vehicles that were untried, or untested. The word certainly existed as slang for several decades prior to the invention of the military vehicle.

In 1950 Willys-Overland Inc. was granted the privilege of owning the name "Jeep" as a registered trademark however they certainly did not invent the name nor design the original vehicle.

The Mercedes-Benz W187 is a luxury car produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1951 to 1955. Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in April 1951, the W187 was powered by a single overhead camshaft inline six-cylinder M180 engine and available as a saloon, coupé, and cabriolet, all designated with the 220 model name. Despite its pre-World War II reputation as a manufacturer of luxury cars, in the immediate post-war years Mercedes-Benz produced only four-cylinder-engined passenger cars. The W187 Mercedes-Benz 220 and flagship W186 Mercedes-Benz 300 Adenauer introduced together in 1951 were the first Mercedes to once again feature six-cylinder engines.

The styling was similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz 170S except that the 170's freestanding headlights were for the 220 integrated into the fenders for a slightly more modern look. Two different cabriolet models were built, conceived as exclusive sporting cars of exclusive character, but these only sold 1,278 and 997 for the "A" (2-door, 2/3-seat) and "B" (2-door, 4-seat) versions, respectively.

In December 1953, just as the saloon and cabriolet "B" models were about to be replaced, a "Cabriolet A" derived W187 Coupé was announced for 1954. The Mercedes-Benz sales department let it be known that this development was a direct response to pressing requests from leading celebrities of the time.

During 1953 the manufacturer replaced the conventionally flat windscreen on the 2/3 seater "Cabriolet A" with a slightly curved screen, which also found its way on to the new coupé: this was a way of highlighting the sporting nature of both models. Nevertheless, the coupé once fitted, as many were, with a steel sunroof, was at the end of 1953 offered for 22,000 Marks which was nearly twice the price for the standard W187 "Limousine", and only 85 of the W187 coupés were actually sold. Between August 1952 and May 1953, 41 special soft top "OTP" bodied W187 220s were produced for the police.

All 220s used newly developed M180 six cylinder 2195cc engine producing 80 hp DIN (86 SAE) (59 kW). In contrast with the rather old fashioned look of the car's body, the new engines attracted much attention in the motoring press, being the first new engine presented by Mercedes-Benz in more than ten years.

The valves were operated by short rocker arms from an overhead camshaft. The engine was unusual in Europe at this time in having oversquare cylinder dimensions with a bore of 80.0mm and a stroke of only 72.8mm, which facilitated the design of an efficient cylinder head. The manufacturer claimed a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) for the saloons and 145 km/h (90 mph) for the cabriolets which was faster than the 52 PS (38 kW) powered 170S Cabriolet which the cabriolet version of the W187 replaced and from which its bodywork was derived. The new six-cylinder engine would form the basis, repeatedly enlarged and upgraded as the years went on, for a long line of six-cylinder engines powering mainstream Mercedes-Benz models including the six-cylinder version of the early S-Class models in the 1970s. Because of the extra power in what was, by modern standards, a heavy car, the W187 was equipped with Duplex drum brakes.

With the sedan/saloon bodied cars about to be delisted by the manufacturer in May 1954, in April 1954 the "Cabriolet A" and its Coupé derivative were fitted with a new higher compression 85 PS (63 kW) engine that had been developed for the soon to be announced Ponton bodied Mercedes-Benz W180. These faster sporting versions of the W187 continued in production for a further year. The 220 saloon was replaced by the W105/W180 line in 1953. The coupé and cabriolet continued until August 1955.

The saloon went out of production in May, 1954; the Cabriolet models continued for another 15 months until August 1955. The body of the W187 saloon was closely modelled on the 1938 Mercedes-Benz W153, and despite the modern engine that powered it, already looked old fashioned to many observers on the day it was introduced. Two years earlier, in 1949, the Borgward Hansa had served notice that car design had moved on since the 1930s, and the manufacturer's own 1953 W120 confirmed that "modern" European cars were following the North American trend to lower wider bodied designs. This has been seen as an explanation for the W187's own unusually short production run of slightly above three years for the saloon and less than five years for the longest lived of the Cabriolet models.

The W187 was immediately replaced with the Ponton bodied six cylinder Mercedes-Benz 220a (W180). When the cabriolet was withdrawn in 1955 there was no direct successor. However, slightly more than a year later the all-new Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet and Coupé appeared, respectively in July and October 1956, using, like the saloon on which they were based, a modern ponton style body.
