Round 6 of the CHNL saw a depleted Hepburn take on Creswick. For the 2nd week in a row the Burra’s were forced to line up with 2 players out injured. Confident in their squad, the competition leaders tried various line ups throughout the game until they quickly settled. Captain Libby Purtell at Goal Attack was instrumental in providing Hepburn with plenty of options in attack. Purtell maintained her 100% accuracy throughout the first half and was supported brilliantly by sharp shooter Jane Lienhop at Goal Shooter.

Creswick managed to keep the mid-court battle alive by providing sharp drives to the circle; however the Burra’s defensive pressure in the circle from Ebony Place saw the ball turned over time and time again. The junior of Hepburn’s team,18 year old Tara Ford clocked up her 150th game for the club in great style at Goal Defence. Ford seems to be taking every opportunity in seniors to develop her game with the help of Place at Goal Keeper. However it was wing attack Brydie Taig that stood up to the challenge and lifted the Burra’s confidence. Taig was named Hepburn’s best on court thanks to her speed and sharp feeding into the circle. Hepburn ran out winners 53 to 17.

The Mo Shepherd award went to Hannah Cameron-Taylor and Libby Purtell for outstanding work.

Hepburn’s reserves were also focussed on keeping their unbeaten run to the finals alive. The Burras got off to a shaky start as they tried to adjust to Creswick’s style. Moving Janee Brown into Centre in the second quarter was all it took to lift the Burras confidence and provide a 24 to 9 lead at half time.

Courtney Wetzel at Goal Defence, Kristi Pedretti at Goal Keeper and Caitlan Ryan at Wing Defence stepped up in the second half and kept Creswick scoreless until the final minutes of the game. Wetzel provided one of her best games of netball this year getting her hands on ever pass that came her way. Final scores Hepburn 53 to 13.

The Mo Shepherd award went to Caitlan Ryan and Janee Brown

The Dubbo War Memorial is a large, freestone tower, positioned atop a trachyte base. Three sides of the tower feature decoration and inscriptions. High up on the tower's front face is a stone laurel wreath. Closer to ground level is a dedication to those who fell in the First World War. The second side is dedicated to the Second World War and the third is for Korea, Malaysia, Borneo and Vietnam.

The memorial's base features three detailed, bronze relief panels, which depict Australian mounted infantry (Light Horse) and artillery units in action during the First World War. There are also three circular bronze sculptures shaped like waratahs, the official floral emblem of NSW.

The memorial was constructed between 1924–1925. It was designed by Sydney architects H. Crone and R.W. Hinton, and constructed by Robert Wall & Sons, also of Sydney. Crone and Hinton's design was chosen from 55 entries in a design competition that was held in February 1924 (Evening News, 4 February 1924). Their entry was described in The Labor Daily (15 March 1924) as:

a cenotaph in dressed freestone with a fine axed trachyte base with bronzed plates, illustrating France, Gallipoli and Egypt.

The Daily's article also quoted Sir Charles Rosenthal, one of the adjudicators of the competition. He said:

the aim of the memorial was not to express satisfaction at victory, but to commemorate the service and sacrifice which had been the main characteristics of the people throughout the war.

The unveiling and dedication ceremony took place on Anzac Day, 25 April 1925. The momentous occasion was reported on detail in The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate on 28 April. The unveiling was conducted by Dubbo's most distinguished military son, Brigadier General James Heane, DSO, CMG, CB. He was accompanied by Bishop Long, Anglican Bishop of Bathurst, who performed the dedication. The newspaper enthusiastically reported:

It is estimated that upwards of 4000 people gathered last Saturday morning round the monument that the people of Dubbo and district have erected to the memory of their fallen soldiers. The ceremony from beginning to end was most impressive, and the impassioned and beautiful address delivered by Bishop Long thrilled, amazed and deeply touched every man, woman and child who was present. It was a speech the like of which few who were there have heard or will be likely to hear again.

Unlike most war memorials, the Dubbo tower is not inscribed with an honour roll of those who served or made the supreme sacrifice. Instead, these names are recorded in Books of Remembrance, which are locked in a purpose-built, waterproof recess, positioned behind one of the waratah sculptures. The books measure 25 x 20cm and are bound in vellum, with leaves of parchment. Recorded in the books is on alphabetical listing of Dubbo's fallen. Spaces have been left to add the names of those who have been missed.

The recess is the responsibility of the Mayor, who removes the books during the Anzac Day service. This tradition began at the unveiling ceremony, when Major-General Cox read the names from the book and locked them in the recess. He then presented the key to Mayor E. H. Burkitt in his role as "chief citizen of Dubbo and custodian of [the] monument". Mayor Burkitt declared he "will see that on every Anzac Day the recess is unlocked, the book removed, the names of the dead read out, and the book replaced" (The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate, 28 April 1925).

The memorial is located in Dubbo's well-maintained Victoria Park, which traces its history back to the late 1800s. It is positioned on the Darling Street side of the park, near the intersection with Church Street. In front of the memorial are a set of ornamental metal gates, bearing the dates 1914 and 1918, underneath two Rising Sun badges. The park contains several other war memorials, including Dubbo Memorial Drive, Rose Garden and Honour Rolls, the Dubbo Lone Pine and the Dubbo Vietnam War and Pte William W. Donnelly Memorial.

In 2018, two sandstone obelisks were added to the northern side of the memorial, located on either side of the Remembrance Driveway, which runs to the north. Attached to them are bronze waratah artworks, created by sculptor Brett Garling. The obelisks were established in honour of the Centenary of the Armistice, which brought the First World War to an end on 11 November 1918. They were commissioned after the Dubbo Regional Council formed a Centenary of Armistice Committee, which also involved the Dubbo RSL sub-Branch. The monuments were installed by Abbey Funeral Homes and KD Stoneworks of Tumut. A blessing and dedication ceremony was held on 11 November 2018.

Dubbo War Memorial commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The memorial was originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. The dedication inscription for those who lost their lives in World War Two was unveiled on the 17th October 1951.

The monument features detailed bronze relief figures of Australian mounted infantry (Light Horse) and artillery units in action during World War One. The bronze tablets were unveiled on Armistice Day 1925.

A crowd of nearly 4,000 people gathered for the unveiling of the Dubbo War Memorial in Victoria Park on 25 April 1925. The memorial was unveiled by Brigadier General James Heane, DSO, CMG, CB who was educated at Dubbo Superior School and served as the Area Officer for Militia Training prior to the Great War.

The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate (NSW), 28 April 1925.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, when the Great War ended, the soldiers lined up over many hundreds of miles of the fronts in different parts of Europe, Asia and Africa rejoiced in that they had brought to its conclusion the war to end all wars. We know now that that was a delusion, but still it is a great day, partly of rejoicing and partly of memory for those who fell by the wayside in this great march towards peace on earth and goodwill among men. In Dubbo on Wednesday the day was made the occasion for completing our Memorial Monument by the unveiling of the bronze tablets depicting work of three of the principal arms of the service.

Mr. G. W. Browne then explained the meaning of the bronze tablets, although, as he said, they hardly needed it; for, as to the one facing Church street every boy and girl there could see that it depicted the Landing at Gallipoli. Facing the railway station was a bronze picture showing the work of that splendid arm of the service, the artillery, and a gun crew in action was there shown. On the third side was the gallant Light Horse, the mounted men, so many of whom had gone from the country district around them. They should look upon the monument as the sepulchre of dauntless men. They should forget all about war, but remember the spirit of the people who had built the monument in love and gratitude to their dead.

The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate (NSW),

13 November 1925.

An inscription on the Soldiers' Memorial, commemorating the sacrifice of the fallen in world war 1939-1945 was unveiled by Sir John Northcott at a dedication this morning. The Bishop Co-adjutor, Rt. Rev d'Arcy Collins conducted the dedication.

Bear in mind that this wasn't in the sex museum, it was in the science museum, FOR KIDS.

The regiment was sent over to Mort-Homme (Left Bank), on April 6. Jubert's company was held in a reserve position at the base of the hill. On April 8, the 2nd Company was put on alert; it would be moving forward soon. Jubert remarked to a fellow officer, "This will do us good. We were starting to get out of the habit of dying."

As he woke up early the following morning, he gazed at the men: "They were sleeping, with no suspicion that death was nearby; like condemned men, they would be awoken only so that they had to die no more."

At 0700 hrs, the German artillery opened up with a massive bombardment on Mort-Homme and the neighboring Hill 304. In fact, it was the heaviest one since the opening of the battle on February 21, and many witnesses described Mort-Homme as resembling an erupting volcano. Jubert watched in awe at the sheer violence of the assault and noted poetically:

"Brushstroke was being added to brushstroke in quick succession, dozens at a time. So heavy that they could suffocate you if you were close, from a distance they looked fresh, harmonious to the eye. Thunderclouds floated across the sky, touched with the color of the morning. The sun has this virtue: beneath it's rays, death takes on pure beauty"

We positioned ourselves under an old tree which sheltered us from the rain and the hot sun (yes there was both!) and hung postcards of book covers and the Summer Reading Challenge from the branches along with some bunting.

I managed to do a presentation on stage for a very chuffed Book Tracker winner also advertising how brilliant our library service was, of course.

RADIO EXE mentioned the library several times throughout the day and our competition 'Spot the Spider' (a grid based game) went down a storm. About 130 odd people had a go (adults and kids)! The biggest pull was that it was FREE and you could win something. Oh and the sweets on the table helped too.

Anyway I believe over 350 people that day must have seen or heard something about the St Thomas Library, which we are happy with.

Those screens (écrans cathodiques) were said to be unsafe for pregnant women. The rays could kill your fetus if you refused to wear the protective apron supplied by the company. The protective apron was thick and heavy like those worn by radiologists.

The easiest method of muscle testing. Everyone can do this one. The only negative is that it sometimes takes longer.
