Known locally as the "Thrupenny Bit"
this is the position of German defensive blockhouses (Stellung 1), looking towards the town of Ypres on the horizon. Allied forces passed out of this town through the Menin gate to attack this strong point up-hill, in the wet clay... under fire. Of the battles, the largest, best-known, and most costly in human suffering was the Third Battle of Ypres (21 July to 6 November 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele), in which the British, Canadians, ANZAC, and French forces recaptured the Passchendaele Ridge east of the city at a terrible cost of lives. After months of fighting, this battle resulted in nearly half a million casualties to all sides, and only a few miles of ground won by Allied forces. During the course of the war the town was all but obliterated by the artillery fire.
We are right next to a railway line, perhaps two or three feet away from our right side. In front of us is a road crossed by the rail line, and right near us is the front of a Melbourne suburban train set built by Siemens and painted in blue and yellow livery. The train's destination board tells us it is headed to Cheltenham.
