Building history:
This is castle Bleijenbeek in Afferden the Netherlands , its history goes back to the year 1300 ,in 1405 a room wing with a basement was built to the castle , the basement still exists today , and a square tower was build ,in the 15. Century a shield wall was placed and a courtyard was created in the 16. century a second larger wing was added to the castle after several conversions in the 17. century this was a castle with 4 wings around the courtyard
during the 2. worldwar this castle was occupied by the germans wich did not gave up fighting ,the RAF decided to bomb this castle , this happend only 5 days befor the war ended in the southern part of the netherlands .the remains of 2 german soldiers who died here where never found , and are still here on this site , the mothers of these soldiers came back every year until the 80's to put flowers in memorial for their suns ,
even today people come here to remember their family , as we walked around the site we found a cross and flowers left behind from an engish person ..

Dupaningan Agta is an Austronesian language of the Philippine subgroup which is
spoken in northeastern Luzon, Philippines by approximately 1,400 semi-nomadic hunter gatherers belonging to the Negrito ethnic minority.

The Superb Starling (Lamprotornis superbus) is a member of the starling family of birds. It can commonly be found in East Africa, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
This species is 18 to 19 cm (7–7.5 inches) long. Adults have black heads and iridescent blue-to-green back, upper breast, wings, and tail. The belly is red-orange, separated from the blue breast by a white bar. The undertail coverts and the wing linings are white. Juveniles have duller plumage with no more than a suggestion of the white breast band. Their irises are brown, later grayish white, eventually the adult's cream-color.
The Superb Starling has a long and loud song consisting of trills and chatters. At midday it gives a softer song of repeated phrases. There are several harsh calls, the most complex of which is described as "a shrill, screeching skerrrreeee-cherrrroo-tcherreeeeeet."
This species feeds on the ground. (Wikipedia)

FICHA TÉCNICA Orden: Rodentia. Familia: Múridos. Subfamilia: Murinos. Género: Rattus
Especie: Rattus rattus (Linnaeus, 1752). Peso: De 125 a 250 gramos.

The Shack was an interesting place. Poe had not been the first one to dream of it, nor would she be the last. As she gazed out the windows, she saw people of all shapes and sizes and races passing by now and again and she seemed to know that these were not people like her, these people were different, passing through. The Quiet and the Shack had changed slightly from what she could remember, but she supposed that was the way of these things. As those people came and went,
they took some things with them and left other things behind.
The Shack also seemed to have its own sort of energy; its own life almost. Just as it had blocked Laz out of Poe's mind the night before,it also blocked Poe from feeling any tingle of Serafina's arrival. Whoever had first dreamed up the Shack had built it for seclusion and reflection, and thusly, it kept things that would interfere with that... out, until such time as the occupant or the Shack itself decided that they needed to move on. After all, introspection was a good thing from time to time, but it wouldn't do to just retreat into oneself reclusively. That was-not- the Shack's purpose. It was not a hiding place.Poe had thought about using it for just that, and the Shack simply wasn't going to allow it.

The Vickers Vimy was designed as a long-range bomber capable of delivering a one ton payload to central Germany. Deliveries to the RAF began in October 1918, just too late to see operational use in World War One. However, pioneering flights across the Atlantic, from England to Australia and London to Cape Town would ensure its place in aviation history.Brooklands Museum - Explore
This modern reproduction was commissioned by Peter McMillan in 1994 to re-enact the type’s three long distance flights of 1919-20. Its first flight was made in California on the 30th July 1994. In 1994 it flew the epic 75th anniversary flight to Australia, piloted by Peter McMillan and Lang Kidby. In 1999 it successfully flew to South Africa, piloted by Mark Rebholz and John LaNoue and on 2nd -3rd July 2005, the Vimy achieved the ultimate goal when Steve Fossett and Mark Rebholz successfully re-enacted Alcock & Brown’s trans-Atlantic flight from St Johns, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland, in just under 19 hours.
In 2006 ownership passed to the American ISTAT Foundation and the aeroplane was maintained to airworthy standards at Dunsfold Park by Brooklands Museum volunteers. It was finally donated to Brooklands Museum Trust on 26th August 2006.
Since 2006 the Vimy has represented Brooklands at a number of occasions including the Farnborough Airshow, the Goodwood Revival and the 2009 Connemara Airshow in Ireland to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of Alcock and Brown flying the Atlantic. The decision was taken to retire the aircraft from flying (see the full reasons on our Vimy Retirement page) and on the 15th November 2009, its last flight was to the grass landing strip at Mercedes-Benz World. See a 10 minute film by Andy Lambert of the arrival at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHPe79Bhvb4. The Vimy was subsequently taken by road to the Wellington Hangar at the Museum on the 19th November - see Andy Lambert’s film of this at www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjepleZp7vI. The Vimy Exhibition was formally opened by Peter McMillan at the Museum’s Vimy Day on the 21st November 2009.

History: The B-17, arguably World War II's most famous heavy bomber, first flew on July 28, 1935, before a crowd of reporters eager to see Boeing's new bomber take wing. It was dubbed the "Flying Fortress" by the members of the press in attendance because of its (at least for the time) heavy defensive armament. The prototype crashed in October, but because of its impressive speed and handling the US Army Air Corps (USAAC) decided to continue testing anyway. They ordered 13 YB-17s for further evaluation, a decision that would prove momentous in years to come.
The YB-17 had five machine guns, room for 4,800 pounds of bombs and a crew of nine. It had electrically retractable landing gear. After testing the YB-17, an improved prototype, the Y1B-17, was built with Wright Cyclone radial engines. Twelve were delivered to the USAAC's 2nd Bombardment Group for trials. One of these was soon equipped with new Moss/General Electric turbochargers that became standard on all future Flying Fortresses. The first production order was for 39 B-17Bs with turbo-charged engines, and as soon as these were under production another order for the B-17C was placed, with seven machine guns instead of the original five.
The RAF received their first B-17Cs in 1941, and were soon conducting daylight raids over Germany. The defensive armament soon proved inadequate, and the B-17's altitude was little defense against the German fighters. Orders for the B-17D were soon placed with self-sealing fuel tanks and more armor because of lessons learned in bombing missions over Europe. The B-17E and B-17F soon followed with larger tail. The B-17F was the first to serve with the USAAF 8th Air Force. After suffering staggering losses in late 1943, analysis proved head-on attacks by enemy fighters were a distinct problem. The final major version, the B-17G, added a chin turret with dual machineguns. This gave the B-17 a defensive armament of 13 guns.
After the war, several dozen B-17s lived on as fire-bombers and aerial surveyors until the last one was retired in the 1970s. Today, a few B-17s have been restored to their wartime splendor. Eleven are currently flying in the United States, one in the UK and another one in France. [History by David MacGillivray]

The Morning Star over Ayre's Rock at Dawn.
•Ayers Rock is located in the middle of Australia, in fact very close to the actual geographical centre.
•Geographical coordinates: 25°20'41" S, 131°01'57" E.
•Ayers Rock is not the world's largest monolith. This title belongs to Mt Augustus in Western Australia.
•Uluru is
◦862.5 metres above sea level,
◦348 metres (1141 feet) high,
◦3.6 km long (2.2 miles),
◦1.9 km wide (1.2 miles),
◦9.4 km or 5.8 miles around the base (that's walking),
◦covers 3.33 km2 (1.29 miles2),
◦extends about several km/miles into the ground, it is not exactly known how far (despite the numbers you might have read).
•The climbing track (which trespasses an important Aboriginal sacred site) is 1.6 km (one mile) long.
•The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is 1326 km2 in size (132,567 hectares, or 512 miles2).
•Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park has a desert climate.
•The area receives a surprising amount of rainfall for a desert (like most Australian deserts do), about 200 - 250 mm a year.
•Like all deserts the area experiences extremes in temperature. Winter nights can be as cold as -8°C, and summer days as hot as 48°C.
•During the middle of summer (December to March) the daily maximum averages 38°C
•Both Uluru and Kata Tjuta are left overs of a huge sediment that has formed hundreds of millions of years ago:
•Sand was laid down in a basin which formed about 900 million years ago. Material continued to collect at the bottom of this ancient sea bed until about 300 million years ago.
•550 million years ago the area was lifted and folded and mountain ranges formed. These ranges eroded in the following millions of years, leaving huge sediments at the bottom.
•About 300 million years ago the seas disappeared. The remaining sediment folded and fractured again. In this major process the sediment layers that now form Uluru were tilted, so that today they are at a 85° angle. Kata Tjuta was tilted some 20°. The whole region was lifted up above sea level in the process.
•This means Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the only visible tips of a massive underground rock slab.
•You could even argue that the description of Uluru as a monolith is inaccurate, as it is actually part of this huge underground rock formation that also includes Kata Tjuta.
•The intriguing sculpted shapes, valleys and ridges, caves, potholes and plunge pools are the result of the last few hundreds of millions of years of erosion. The flaky surface is due to chemical decomposition.
•Uluru is made of arkose sandstone (a sandstone rich in feldspar), whereas Kata Tjuta is a conglomerate of gravel and boulders, cemented together by mud and sand.
•Uluru is naturally grey, but the iron content of the rock is "rusting" at the surface, resulting in the distinctive red iron oxide coating

Friday was a sad day for me. I walked into work at 7:45 am to find out that a young woman who I've worked with for some time now, only 28 years old, had died in her sleep. I can not express the shock and sadness i hold in my heart right now. This woman was a daughter, a sister, a caregiver, a friend, and an all around wonderful person. She had a lot left to do in this world and was always striving to be the best person she could be.
I sent this balloon to her for I smile because she has lived. This is my tribute to her life, not her death. I will think about her daily and what could've been. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends at this hard time. Anita. We love you.
“You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.”

I went sightseeing to the Farallon Islands last weekend before the storm. It was my first time out there and the highlight was probably seeing 20 to 30 humpback whales surface feeding over Fanny Shoals.
The Farallon Islands have a long history of bird egg harvesting, fur seal harvesting, whaling, and fishing. It was also the site of nuclear waste disposal during the first 30 years of the cold war. The aircraft carrier Independence, a target ship for two atmospheric nuclear tests, was purposefully scuttled to the west of the Islands.
We caught rockfish, lingcod, and sanddabs. It wasn't a great fishing day, but as the others sent me home with some of their catch I probably won't be buying fish for a month or so.
Sebastes species are slow growing territorial predators with venomous spines in their dorsal and anal fins. Several species are known to live 100 to 200 years. The group is commonly sold as "red snapper" in fish markets. There are about 130 species in the genus and many species have multiple color morphs -- making field identification difficult for sport and commercial fishermen. Several (if not all) Sebastes species are endangered by overfishing. Catch and release of non-target species is complicated by the expansion of air in the internal organs of Sebastes during retrieval. While they appear paralyzed or dead at the surface, Sebastes caught in less than 200 feet water can be returned to successfully to depth using special techniques involving weights and reverse barbless hooks or open bottom containers. Marine sanctuaries off the California coast will soon protect limited geographical sites from all fishing.
Next time I want to send a camera down there.
Saturday 29 October 2011 - Day 08 - Trek Trakshindo / Traksingo (2,930m / 9,612ft) to Kharikhola (2,069m/6,789ft)
Kumar's prediction came true - and luckily Hazel and I were up and out on the lawn of the Mountain View Lodge & Restaurant for a stunning sunrise and to watch as the dark grey ridges resolved into bright green hillsides, and to admire the bright white ridge of Kusum Kang (6,367m / 20,889ft).
After another speedy visit to Trakshindo Gompa, this time under bright blue skies, we set off on our final day eastwards, descending through woods and farmland passing through the village of Nuntala and onwards to cross the Dudh Kosi (दुध कोसी) - the river that runs south from the Mount Everest massif. The relentless descent was hard on the knees.
Having crossed the Dudh Kosi (दुध कोसी) we started our ascent to Kharikhola, enjoying an orange, cucumber and walnut refreshment stop en route to Juving, where we had veg noodle soup lunch amidst the beautiful flower garden at the Ghorkhali Lodge & Restaurant. Then onwards and upwards along the path, stopping every now and then to let gaz-bottle-laden donkey trains pass by. We paused in the hamlet of Churkha to watch school children preform various dances for Tihar, as mums with babies in baskets suspended by a head straps made the climb up look easy.
As we crested the ridge, Kharikhola (2,069m/6,789ft) came into view - a long, straggling village, heading up the valley of the Khari khola. Before continuing on into the village, Hazel and I headed up the stone steps to explore the large stupa and gompa and for the views.
It took Daa Waa a while to find us accommodation in Kharikhola - the first few lodges were busy and/or wanted to charge too much. Continuing on along the paved street brought us to the lovely chalet style Solukhumbu Guest House, where we indulged in their slate lined shower and donned fresh clothes before retracing our steps to take a more relaxed look around the gompa. Kharikhola was preparing for the blow out party to mark the last night of Tihar and by evening time there were more than a few tipsy gents dancing in the streets, and later on in the night we heard partying people passing by outside.

This horse or tractor drawn seed drill or planter was built between 1920 and 1930. The VB logo on the drill identifies this as one of the Van Brunt drill line, which first appeared in 1861. The Van Brunt line was acquired by John Deere in 1911. These drills were used to plant seeds for a variety of crops including grains, beans, beets and barley to feed both humans and the horses. The seeder included elaborate mechanisms to plant seeds. Some of these were a wooden seed box for holding the seeds; funnels to guide the seeds to the ground; disks to break up the ground and metal chains that were dragged over the ground to drag dirt over the seeds and cover them up.

Polystichum lemmonii the signature fern for serpentine soil
Arthur Kruckeberg: "Of the western ferns on serpentine, only Polystichum lemmonii is obligate,"
Source Hardy Fern Library
Dryopteridaceae
Fern
Lemmon's holly-fern, Shasta fern
A serpentine soil is derived from ultramafic rocks, in particular serpentinite, a rock formed by the hydration and metamorphic transformation of ultramafic rock from the Earth's mantle.
The soils derived from ultramafic bedrock give rise to unusual and sparse associations of edaphic (and often endemic) plants that are tolerant of extreme soil conditions, including:
low calcium:magnesium ratio
lack of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus and
high concentrations of the heavy metals (more common in ultramafic rocks)
These plants are commonly called serpentine endemics, if they grow only on these soils. (Serpentinite is composed of the mineral serpentine, but the two terms are often both used to mean the rock, not its mineral composition.)

SPLENDOUR ON THE GREEN.
Last year on a Saturday evening we drove to Harrogate, a pleasant spa town to the south-east of the Yorkshire Dales, famous for its tea shops (like Betty’s), flower shows, Turkish baths, antique shops and gardens. A very 'oldy worldy' place with a particular atmosphere.
Once a year in this huge green, the rows of trees lining the paths explode in splendour, the cherry trees. They criss-cross the lovely grassy field.
The first time we came across them... we were too late.
The next year... some trees had been chopped because of disease, leaving huge gaps...
The next year we forgot...
The next year it was a dreadful Spring with late frost, the blossoms hardly came out, a merciless storm threw them to the ground...
The next year we kept hearing on the news that although the money had been raised and the young trees planted to restore this visual feast, some vandals came and cracked the saplings...
Last year we forgot again…
This year, WE MADE IT!!!
The sky had been a milky soft box the whole day, but I sensed a glimmer of 'more', as everyone went home, the 'sun' came out gently for a while.
It was wonderful, the tender full blossoms ever so gently swaying in the warm evening light, walking in wonderland, so beautiful… so fleeting.
The next day it was windy, across from our house; the neighbours have a Cherry tree… most of the petals now a pink carpet on the ground… grab it while it's there!
Just a few of the images I came home with, a flavour of the opulence with which I was surrounded, what a feast for all the senses.
Have a glorious day and thanx, M, (*_*)
A splendid Ah Tay bed with Dayap fruit motif

Lot 451 of the Salcedo Auctions auction on 21 September 2019. Please see salcedoauctions.com for more details.
Famous Chinese furniture maker, Ah Tay, and his iconic calabasa bed has remained one of the most coveted pieces of furniture in our history. Though instantly recognizable because of the obvious typical design elements, the scramble for genuine examples from the scores of reproductions continue to grow due to increasing demand from serious collectors. Calabasa bed – aptly named for the heavily gadrooned halved squash shape used for bed posts – is a juxtaposition of varied styles prevalent in Europe from the 1840s to 1880s: Gothic Revival, Rococo Revival and Renaissance Revival. This bed, in particular, has all the quintessential Ah Tay traits, crafted at the highest level – something that latter pieces will never be able to duplicate – that only the master himself can accomplish. Interestingly, there is age-appropriate numbering in Chinese characters on each calabasa support that matches with the corresponding post, thereby avoid mismatching the parts during assembly – a solid proof of Chinese hands in the making this bed. The lustrous patina and the unfeignable signs of usage accumulated over a long time are tactile testaments to its authenticity.
Ah Tay loved to incorporate tropical fruits in his beds. In this example, dayap fruits in varying degree of maturity are carved as decorative motif. Dayap (citrus aurantifolia) is a small tree native to Southeast Asia. Its most popular use in the Philippines is its rind added to leche flan or creme caramel for a distinct, sharp citrusy flavor. This is no coincidence as the original owners of the bed had a dayap farm in Pulupandan town in Negros, thus the sentimental association. They can be seen in the headboard bottom support, inside lyre posts, and from the canopy’s vaulted crests dangling gracefully. In a very good and sturdy condition. Found in a house in Mandaluyong.

Walking through a dream
I see you
My light in darkness breathing hope of new life
Now I live through you and you through me
Enchanted
I pray in my heart that this dream never ends
I see me through your eyes
Living through life flying high
Your life shines the way into paradise
So I offer my life as a sacrifice
I live through your love
You teach me how to see
All that’s beautiful
My senses touch your world I never pictured
Now I give my hope to you
I surrender
I pray in my heart that this world never ends
I see me through your eyes
Living through life flying high
Your love shines the way into paradise
So I offer my life
I offer my love, for you
When my heart was never open
(and my spirit never free)
To the world that you have shown me
But my eyes could not division
All the colors of love and of life ever more
Evermore
(I see me through your eyes)
I see me through your eyes
(Living through life flying high)
Flying high
Your love shines the way into paradise
So I offer my life as a sacrifice
And live through your love
And live through your life
I see you

Today wasn't my best day ever.
It started with a disappointment because I maybe have to wait another 2 weeks before my flashlights will be send to me, but when I called the company they were really rude and told me some lies to believe. I hate it when people don't take me serious and try to fool me like I am some stupid blondie.
So I was a little pissed when I got off the phone.
An hour later my son came up to me in panic because there was a policeman at the frontdoor. My neighbours have been complaining again for nothing, so I made him clear that this will be last time they annnoyed me, because after 10 years of bullying I am at the end of my patience.
I used my agression for inspiration:
Be prepared to meet my Evil side.
(No neighbours were injured in this shot.)

According to Wikipedia, the Emu is the largest bird native to Australia and the only surviving member of its genus. It is the second-largest surviving bird in the world by height, after its relative, the ostrich. The emu is common over most of mainland Australia, although it avoids heavily populated areas, dense forest, and arid areas. The soft-feathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 6 ½ feet (2m) in height and have long thin necks and legs. Emus can travel great distances at a fast, economical trot and, if necessary, can sprint at 30 mph (50 km/h). Their long legs allow them to take strides of up to 9 feet (275cm). They are opportunistically nomadic and may travel long distances to find food; they feed on a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without food. Emus ingest stones, glass shards and bits of metal to grind food in their digestive system. They drink infrequently, but take in copious fluids when the opportunity arises. Emus will sit in water and are also able to swim. They are curious birds who are known to follow and watch other animals and humans. Emus do not sleep continuously at night but in several short stints sitting down.
This has been a favorite shooting location for me for almost thirty years. When I was actively working as a professional photographer, I lived in an apartment that was approximately 150 yds+/- outside of the left margin of this image. This is a typical free form regatta that has been customary for small craft owners (both sail and motorcraft) every Wednesday afternoon since the Marina del Rey was first completed in 1965 . The regatta takes place every Wednesday afternoon fair or foul weather.(Obviously the size of the regatta varies with the weather). Its known euphamistically in Marina del Rey as the Wednesday afternoon 'beer can regatta'. And it's really more of a parade than a race. Just good times.
Marina del Rey is one of the (if not the) largest small craft marinas in the U.S. there are berths for more than 5,200 small boats. There were at least 50 additional vessels outside the right side of the frame outside the breakwater in the Pacific Ocean and I saw another 10 or 15 sails further up the channel (left margin of the image) at the time this image was shot.. Look at the first comment on this image's photo page to see an image taken by me at the same location in 1983.
This is a single RAW image tone mapped with Dynamic Photo HDR4 software. Then I placed a black and white overlay on the shot, saturated the black with a 'red filter' for dramtic effect and gradually bled the color back into the shot until I got the look I wanted.

I like her version of the song Ligaya (originally by Eraserhead)
Ligaya

The Qolsarif mosque located in Kazan Kremlin is the largest mosque in Russia and, reputedly, in Europe.
Originally, the mosque was built in Kazan Kremlin in the 16th century. It was named after Qolsarif who served there. Qolsharif died with his numerous students while defending Kazan from Russian forces in 1552. It is believed that the building featured minarets, both in the form of cupolas and tents. Its design was traditional for Volga Bulgaria, although elements of early Renaissance and Ottoman architecture could have been used as well. In 1552, during the storm of Kazan it was destroyed by Ivan The Terrible.
Tatar scholars speculate as to whether some elements of Qolsarif mosque can be seen in Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow (8 minarets, a central cupola, not typical for Russian architecture). Since 1996 the mosque has been rebuilt in Kazan Kremlin, although its look is decisively modern. Its inauguration on July 24, 2005 marked the beginning of celebrations dedicated to the Millennium of Kazan.
Several countries contributed to the fund that was set up to build Qolsharif mosque. Namely, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates. Qolsharif is considered to be one of the most important symbols of Tatar aspiration to independence and liberty. Nowadays the mosque predominantly serves as Museum of Islam. At the same time during the major Muslim celebrations thousands of people gather there to pray.
The Qolsharif complex was envisioned to be an important cornerstone of Kazan architectural landscape. Besides the main mosque building it includes the library, publishing house and Imam's office.
