Lest We Forget

World War I, a.k.a. First World War -

The Great War

"The War to End All Wars"

It was a total war which left millions dead and helped to shape the modern world.

At 11:00am on November 11, 1918 —

eleventh hour

eleventh day

eleventh month —

A ceasefire came into effect and the opposing armies on the Western Front began to withdraw from their positions.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

— Lt.-Col. John McCrae

The poem "In Flanders Fields" by the Canadian army physician John McCrae remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915.

"This poem was literally born of fire and blood during the hottest phase of the second battle of Ypres. My headquarters were in a trench on the top of the bank of the Ypres Canal, and John had his dressing station in a hole dug in the foot of the bank. During periods in the battle men who were shot actually rolled down the bank into his dressing station.

Along from us a few hundred yards was the headquarters of a regiment, and many times during the sixteen days of battle, he and I watched them burying their dead whenever there was a lull. Thus the crosses, row on row, grew into a good-sized cemetery.

Just as he describes, we often heard in the mornings the larks singing high in the air, between the crash of the shell and the reports of the guns in the battery just beside us.

I have a letter from him in which he mentions having written the poem to pass away the time between the arrival of batches of wounded, and partly as an experiment with several varieties of poetic metre." Lieutenant Colonel Edward Morrison

Although it was rumoured by the automotive press since the announcement of the production R8 in 2006, it was only in August 2008 that spy shots of a convertible R8 'Spider' from filming scenes of the movie Iron Man 2 were published online, which included a "soft-top" roof is clearly visible, and the unique sideblade has been removed.[22] The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Compared with the coupé model, the convertible has extra chassis support, a pair of roll-over safety bars, as well as minor changes such as the location of the fuel tank filler. It is powered by a 5.2 FSI V10 engine.

On July 1, 2010 Autocar reported that Audi has added the 4.2 FSI V8 engine to the R8 Spyder range. The 434 PS (319 kW; 428 bhp) (up 14 bhp on coupé), 430 newton metres (317 ft·lbf) unit now completes the R8 Spyder range alongside the launch V10 powerplant. It has a 0-62 mph (0–100 km/h) time of 4.8sec and will go on to reach a top speed of 185 mph (299 km/h). The engine is available with Audi's R tronic sequential manual gearbox. Like the V10 model, the V8 Spyder features an aluminium spaceframe with carbon composites and an automatic retractable folding cloth roof. The Spyder is making its North American Debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Very few images of Stephens Gap show this angle. The keyhole as we call it is a small opening on the upper side of the pit. At the very top it is just large enough for one person drop into. There is enough room however to rig two ropes and a second caver can drop in as soon as the first caver is about 10 feet down. At this level there is a small alcove in front of Sabrina as well as a window to her right looking out over the pit and main waterfall. Dropping a few feet more you pass though into the main section of the cave which bells out considerably. About eighty feet further and your on the pedestal rock. The pit drops another 30 feet to the bottom where the water crashes down and disappears into the rock below. For this shot we had two ropes - one for Sabrina and the other for me. Camera rig was double tethered to a tripod which in turn was double tethered to me. Safety is paramount when shooting in this environment. I have pulled the plug on shots in the past when things didn't feel right. Sometimes staying ahead means calling it a day and walking away empty handed knowing you can return to pull it off later. Fortunately this wasn't one of those days.

Dinosaurier – Giganten Argentiniens

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSYKzm96LfU&feature=player_em...

Anthurium (Schott, 1829), is a large neotropical genus of about 600- 800 (possibly 1,000) species, belonging to the arum family (Araceae). It is the largest and probably the most complex genus of this family. Many species are undoubtedly not described yet and new ones are being found every year.

They grow in the most diverse habitats, mostly in wet tropical mountain forest of Central America and South America, but some in semi-arid environments. Most species occur in Panama, Colombia and Ecuador.

Anthurium grows in many forms, mostly evergreen, bushy or climbing epiphytes with relatively few roots. They occur also as terrestrials or lithophytes. Some are only found in association with arboreal ant colonies or growing on rocks in midstream (such as A. amnicola).

Kalkan (Greek: Kalamaki) is a town on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, which averages 300 days of sunshine a year. The area includes many historical sites and many fine beaches. The word Kalkan is Turkish for 'shield'. Kalkan is an old fishing town, and the only safe harbor between Kaş and Fethiye; it is famous for its white-washed houses, descending to the sea, and its brightly colored bougainvilleas. Until the early 1920s the majority of its inhabitants were Greeks. They had to leave the town in 1923 because of the Exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey after the Greco-Turkish War. They emigrated mainly to Attica, where they founded the new town of Kalamaki. With much of the surrounding land still undeveloped and with many nearby remains of ancient civilizations, Kalkan is the ideal resort[citation needed] for those who want calm and relaxation, enjoying the natural beauty of the cleanest seashores and of rough mountains covered with pine forests, and also for those who want to explore the remains of the ancient Lycian cities in the neighborhood. Lycia, "The Land of Light", which is the first known federation in history, included the many city-states between modern-day Fethiye and Antalya, and its capital was Xanthos (Arna in Lycian language), which is Kinik today, 17 km (11 mi) from Kalkan. Kalkan was an important harbour town until the 1970s as the only seaport for the environs. It declined after construction of Fethiye road but revived after the emergence of the tourism industry in the region. Although part of the Antalya province administratively, Kalkan is connected more closely to Fethiye economically and for transportation. British newspaper The Independent listed Kalkan among the best tourist destinations for 2007. The paper recommended Kalkan especially for those seeking a romantic vacation and who do not want to travel far from their home country in Europe, and defined the town as a destination of choice.

This daisy had a surprise for any little bug passing bye! The little white spider--barely noticeable--appeared as a daisy petal even from as close as 5-6 inches! I could not make its body parts out (i was not sure if I am shooting its front or back) until I developed the pictures. Because i did not see it clear enough, I took about 100 picture sof it.. so now I have 100 perfectly clear and sharp monsters on my computer hard drive! =) I suppose its mother would think it is cute!

Details: Canon 7D with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM at f4.0 with shutter speed of 1/1000 at ISO 100 and I had the white balance on manual with an exposure bias of +2/3 EV. I am actually experimenting with white balance now to see what surfaces in what light will need an increase of exposure. I am amazed to find that it is the very light in high sun that need an exposure increase but subjects in the shade, if given an exposure increase, tend to bleach out. I find this counter intuitive... I will have to study up on the matter. =)

I did most of the picture developing in Lightroom 3 and the vignetted cutout in Onone's PhotoTools using a preset (available at OnOne's website). I used CS5 only to convert from TIFF to JPG and add my copyright stuff.

The Waldensia Coal and Coke Company under took in 1901 an effort to build a large complex to support their coal mining and coke making business. Among the supporting facilities were 80 cottages, a commissary, a hotel, offices, a school*, a post office, a train depot, many coke ovens, a large coal washing facility, and a railroad! It was all completed in 1904.

A sawmill was also constructed to prepare the wood for their building needs, and most of the required logging was done on their own property.

The lake was created by the building of a dam on Mammy’s Creek, where it still stands today. Since the lake and dam are on private property today (2009), you have to view the lake, and falls that cascade over the dam wall, through a large growth of hemlocks. I was told by the owner that someone had recently fallen on the property and was currently suing him over a broken hip. Therefore, “private property” signs have been posted and a fence is being built around the beautiful lake.

I suppose this means that the cool waters of the lake and the shade of the hemlocks will never be freely available to the general public again. Such a shame…why do Americans have to sue so much?

ENGLISH

The Black Swan, Cygnus atratus is a large waterbird which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. The Black Swan was formerly placed into a monotypic genus, Chenopis.

‘Swan’ is the common gender term, but ‘cob’ for a male and ‘pen’ for a female are also used, as is ‘cygnet’ for the young. Collective nouns include a ‘bank’ (on the ground) and a ‘wedge’ (in flight). Black Swans can be found singly, or in loose companies numbering into the hundreds or even thousands.

The Black Swan is common in the wetlands of south western and eastern Australia and adjacent coastal islands. In the south west the range ecompasses an area between North West Cape, Cape Leeuwin and Eucla; while in the east it covers are large region bounded by the Atherton Tableland, the Eyre Peninsula and Tasmania, with the Murray Darling Basin supporting very large populations of Black Swans.

The Black Swan is also very popular as an ornamental waterbird in Western Europe, especially Britain, and escapes are commonly reported. As yet the population in Britain is not considered to be self-sustaining and so the species is not afforded admission to the official British List, but the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust have recorded a maximum of nine breeding pairs in the UK in 2001, with an estimate of 43 feral birds in 2003/04 (though that is undoubtedly an under-estimate given the level of monitoring undertaken).

The black swan was a literary or artistic image, even before the discovery of Cygnus atratus. Cultural reference has been based on symbolic contrast and as a distinctive motif. The Black Swan's role in Australian heraldry and culture extends to the first founding of the colonies in the eighteenth century. It has often been equated with antipodean identity, the contrast to the white swan of the northern hemisphere indicating 'Australianess'. The black swan is featured on the flag, and is both the state and bird emblem, of Western Australia; it also appears in the Coat of Arms and other iconography of the state's institutions.

The reclaimed wetlands of the river Foix estuary have made this area into one of the main attractions of the town. The River Foix, which is dry during most of the year due to construction of the Foix Resservoir is another of the most emblematic places in Cubelles. At the Foix estuary, you can spend the day enjoying nature and birthwatching, or at one of the picnic areas. This zone is also intended for school visits, as it is a place where children can study the ecosystem of a Mediterranean river such as the Foix.

The estuary is separated from the sea by a sand barrier which has accumulated over time, due to sea currents and rainwater sediments, forming freshwater laguens behind the barrier. The natural area of the Foix Delta has a branch of land that sticks out into the sea. This was formed during the floods of 1994 and joins onto another branch, leaving an island in the middle. Tourists can visit the island by crossing a wooden footbridge.

CASTELLANO
