Albuquerque Biopark
Albuquerque, New Mexico
I decided to take the rented Canon L to the Albuquerque Zoo yesterday (Thursday). But when I got to the zoo, it was absolutely full. People were parking blocks away. Oooops, I hadn't thought about Spring Break. So I decided to check out the Aquarium, instead, to see what the L or the super-fast Tamron could do.
It was really crowded at the Aquarium, too. So I decided that maybe my subject matter had changed....
I probably should have changed lenses. The L is wonderful, but not fast enough to really catch the swimming fishies....
Foundation and expansion
After ascending the throne of Cambodia in 1181 A.D., Jayavarman VII embarked on a massive program of construction and public works. Rajavihara ("royal temple"), today known as Ta Prohm ("ancestor Brahma"), was one of the first temples founded pursuant to that program. The stele commemorating the foundation gives a date of 1186 A.D.
Jayavarman VII constructed Rajavihara in honor of his family. The temple's main image, representing Prajnaparamita, the personification of wisdom, was modelled on the king's mother. The northern and southern satellite temples in the third enclosure were dedicated to the king's guru and his elder brother respectively. As such, Ta Prohm formed a complementary pair with the temple monastery of Preah Khan, dedicated in 1191 A.D., the main image of which represented the Bodhisattva of compassion Lokesvara and was modelled on the king's father.
The temple's stele records that the site was home to more than 12,500 people (including 18 high priests and 615 dancers), with an additional 80,000 souls in the surrounding villages working to provide services and supplies. The stele also notes that the temple amassed considerable riches, including gold, pearls and silks.Expansions and additions to Ta Prohm continued as late as the rule of Srindravarman at the end of the 13th century.

So, we took some fun shots of her in Jackson today. We also took some Urbany Bridals that I am excited to get to editing. After tomorrow I am going to be out of commission a few days, but I will be back with lots of time to catch up on your streams and update you guys on my status. I might be around some tomorrow evening, but just in case I don't get to speak to you or what not, I'll catch you on the flipside. Take care everyone.

A while back I bought an Ansco Pix Panorama camera at a thrift store. It cost me four dollars, and it could be argued that I paid too much for it. It's a pocket-size all-plastic 35mm camera with a 28mm wide-angle plastic lens. On the back it has a note that says "Notify Photofinisher: Develop film and print in panoramic format."
It would be very cool if this camera took panoramic shots by producing really wide negatives, but it doesn't do that; instead, it produces really short negatives. It achieves its panoramic effect by means of a removable insert in that masks the top third and bottom third of each frame, essentially "letterboxing" the negative. So the first thing I did after I discovered the mask insert was remove it. If I want the top third and bottom third of my shot cropped off, I'd rather do that after exposing the frame, thank you very much.
I finally decided to give this camera a try with a roll of Kodak 400TX that had taken a couple of trips through the X-ray scanner airports use on checked baggage. A bit of Googling revealed that the Pix Panoramic has a fixed aperture of f/11 and a fixed shutter speed of 1/125 second, but I didn't give much thought to correct exposure while shooting the roll. I just pointed the camera at stuff and clicked, hoping that luck combined with the magic of stand development would produce a few halfway-decent shots.
And the results were a pleasant surprise. I got more "keeper" shots than I expected, and rest were at least interesting in one way or another. Given its small size and light weight, the Pix may end up being a carry-around-at-all times camera.
Ansco Pix Panorama with "panoramic" mask removed. Kodak 400TX, stand developed in Rodinal 1+100 at 19ºC for 70 minutes.
P.S. The title of this shot has nothing whatsoever to do with the TV show "Mad Men", which I've never seen but have heard good things about.

laisse-moi me taire avec ton silence.

I like For You to be Still
I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent,
and you hear me from far away and my voice does not touch you.
It seems as though your eyes had flown away
and it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth.
As all things are filled with my soul
you emerge from the things, filled with my soul.
You are like my soul, a butterfly of dream,
and you are like the word Melancholy.
I like for you to be still, and you seem far away.
It sounds as though you were lamenting, a butterfly cooing like a dove.
And you hear me from far away, and my voice does not reach you:
Let me come to be still in your silence.
And let me talk to you with your silence
that is bright as a lamp, simple as a ring.
You are like the night, with its stillness and constellations.
Your silence is that of a star, as remote and candid.
I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent,
distant and full of sorrow as though you had died.
One word then, one smile, is enough.
And I am happy, happy that it's not true

Burra Goods Shed with damage caused by lack of white ant treatment which has resulted in the decay of timber supports and partial collapse of the building. The Burra Railway Goods Shed was constructed in 1870 of timber and iron using Gospel Oak corrugated iron manufactured in England. Although the shed has been painted silver on the outside, the entire corrugated iron cladding is still the original 1860s Walker's Gospel Oak CGI. In 1870, the goods shed was the site of the luncheon to inaugurate the opening of the Northern Extension Railway to Burra which was attended by 3,000 people. In the 100 years following the opening, the goods shed played a major role in the region's transport system.

Inclued graph for TGIFramework (Tagged) displaying a hello world template after the second load (the first load fills APC user cache).
Note that inclued looks a little funnier than normal because
1) Inclued has trouble fitting prepend scripts into hierarchy. For some reason it thinks the page page is config.php which is completely bypassed on the second load (the actual page is hello.php).
2) Inclued loses the actual parent when dynamically included stuff is __autoloaded()
3) This isn't exactly Tagged.
Diferences I’ve noticed
1) Tagged doesn't use an auto prepend script (it requires manual prepending),
2) Tagged includes the session_start code on every page that this doesn't
3) Tagged includes diagnostics that this doesn't (yet)
4) Tagged includes UDP based page and event logging that this doesn't
5) An event gets thrown on page creation that will trigger the output caching listeners (not yet ported).
All are mostly related to backward compatibility or portability issues.
Still even with the session_start making a remote call to memcache on every request, I still noticed that siegeing Tagged's hello world outperforms CodeIgniter (one of the faster frameworks out there). Why?
1) The load-on-demand design is optimized for this task (the less it does, the less framework is needed)
2) Tagged is designed around portability but not independence, certain optimizations and features are assumed to exist and the codebase takes advantage of them
3) Tagged engineers all know PHP, so a larger templating abstraction is unnecessary (we're using Savant3, probably don't even need that).
4) Performance is a primary consideration for Tagged since the site activity is so busy (the API layer alone needs to handle 5000 transactions a second). This minimal abstraction is most performant for minimal code via iteration.
5) Output caching is unnecessary for dynamically generated static content. In that event, things are created into the web hierarchy and headers are sent to allow edge caching of this content. (This is not tested with that assumption, but the point is a lot of extra code doesn't need to get written in a lot of places because operational design solve that.)
6) To call this a framework is generous. :-)
In any case, compare with other frameworks (note not all these are graphs of hello world, some seem to be graphs of the default page or a typical installation…weird). The default graph for comparison.

Part of a ‘paso’ or passion tableaux, these are de tallado life-size images of Roman centurions or soldiers who mocked and tormented Jesus during his passion ordeal. Designed to look ferocious to invoke fear, they surprisingly appear to be charming and almost animated. Highly realistic and detailed carvings of the body and full soldier regalia to look like helmets with cheek, eyebrow, and neck guards, shoulder armor, woolen tunic, groin protection, and caligae sandals. One soldier would have been holding a spear or sword, while the other soldier has lost both arms. Very rare to find a well-made pair like this in original condition.

The Roseneath Carousel is a phenomenal historical attraction! Built in 1906 in Abilene, Kansas by C. W. Parker, the carousel boasts 40 basswood horses, three abreast, and 2 boats.
A 1934 Wurlitzer 125 Military Band organ, complete with paper rolls, ushers out the nostalgic music.
After the Carousel left the Parker plant, gaps appear in its history. Eventually it surfaced at Mohawk Park in Brantford, Ontario, where directors of the Roseneath Agricultural Society found and purchased the machine for $675.00 in 1932.
The Carousel Restoration committee formed in 1986 and began a massive $400,000.00 fundraising campaign to restore the relic to its original condition.
July 17, 1993 the museum quality, rideable carousel re-opened in its sixteen - sided building (which had been constructed around the carousel upon relocation to the Roseneath fairgrounds in 1932).
In 1998, significant repairs were needed for this protective building. $25,000.00 installed a new foundation, cement flooring and new exterior boarding replacing those destroyed by age.
Fundraising continues and so does the fun! Renovations are still required to make the building climate-controlled to protect the restored Carousel. Your donation will assist us in our efforts to preserve and operate the Carousel a precious reminder of our roots in rural Ontario).
As you ride the Roseneath Carousel, round and round, close your eyes and revel in a timeless musical journey through history!
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over
I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry
These streets we travel on will undergo our same lost past
I found you here, now please just stay for a while
I can move on with you around
I hand you my mortal life, but will it be forever?
I'd do anything for a smile, holding you 'til our time is done
We both know the day will come, but I don't want to leave you
I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry (a melody, a memory, or just one picture)
Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over
Newborn life replacing all of us, changing this fable we live in
No longer needed here so where do we go?
Will you take a journey tonight, follow me past the walls of death?
But girl, what if there is no eternal life?
I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time
But I'm too young to worry (a melody, a memory, or just one picture)
Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over
Trials in life, questions of us existing here, don't wanna die alone without you here
Please tell me what we have is real
So, what if I never hold you, yeah, or kiss your lips again?
Woooaaah, so I never want to leave you and the memories of us to see
I beg don't leave me
Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over
Trials in life, questions of us existing here, don't wanna die alone without you here
Please tell me what we have is real
Silence you lost me, no chance for one more day [x2 then continues in the background]
I stand here alone
Falling away from you, no chance to get back home
I stand here alone
Falling away from you, no chance to get back home
Seize the Day by Avenged Sevenfold

And yes my day thought:
The love is as a balance, in each to bring every day this young something which will make that this balance will remain well-balanced and will hold the shock, in front of tests(events), in front of doubts in front of fears, of the questioning in front of the routine which settles down in front of roads which part and then cross themselves, are made and come undone(crumple)...
In each to look in front of, and next to him, to see what he(it) has, to see his(its) acqui, watch also anywhere but not to forget what he(it) has and and not to look at what he(it) does not have I had forgotten this sentence which nevertheless makes left my life and my values the road was long but I found him(it) I found my balance...
Think of one yes, but not forget the other one, bring every day its small stone to build this balance...
Find the just balance for one at first and for the other one then and if one day the balance breaks down, to say to himself that it will reconstruct with the same nobody or the other one but the perfect balance does not exist (finally it is my opinion(notice) eh:-))
This day thought is for all those that I love that it brings you that she has to bring you thanks to you to make party of my balance and my balance...

How and why: I liked how the bend in the road was echoed by the tracks, and how the rape seed flowers lights up the landscape.
Editing: Removed some street signs.
The original untextured version can be found in the same set. I was unhappy with the over-saturated water and green in the original background but my attempts to correct that left my lovely niece Daisy dull and lifeless, which, I asure you, would be a false characterization.
Solution (short of better colour-correction skills to begin with): texturing an overly vivid background diminished it's impact, added subtle interest, and most important, ensured focal attention where intended. At least that's what I think I accomplished. Comments, criticisms, and tips for improvement are most welcome.
The texture used (and altered) is courtesy of ground*floor www.flickr.com/photos/chromaticaberrations/ who registered his texture sets with creative commons.
Friend and photographer Brian Gudas briangudasphotography.com/personal/ introduced me to this technique and graciously helped me nail down the procedures for myself.

The Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, better known as the 'Big Mac' Bridge due to its golden yellow arches, connects Interstate 71 in downtown Cincinnati to Kentucky. The bridge is named after the founder of the Boy Scouts, who was born and raised nearby. However, many locals, including traffic reporters, ignore the bridge's official name and instead call it "The Big Mac Bridge".
Right-of-way acquisition for the bridge began in January 1968, and construction began on the Ohio River crossing in November 1971. The still-unnamed bridge opened to limited traffic in September 1976. The name of the new bridge was announced on October 5, 1976, the choice being to name the bridge after Daniel Carter Beard, in honor of the founder of the Boy Scouts of America. The Scouts had lobbied hard for the bridge to carry Beard's name, with some paddling down the Ohio and Kentucky rivers to carry petitions to the governor in Frankfort. The Ohio River span and a short section of highway were dedicated on February 14, 1977, with Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown leading the dedication ceremonies.
The bridge is the easternmost of the city's downtown bridge group.

The Cathedral of Morelia is a religious compound headquarters of the Archdiocese of Morelia of the Catholic Church in Mexico. It is located as the name itself says it in the city of Morelia, capital of Michoacan, Mexico. The cathedral is located on the first frame of the city, forming the trace of the Historic Center of Morelia. The building was built in the eighteenth century the Spanish colonial times, is in Baroque style and is made of pink quarry which gives it a distinctive and characteristic color.
# Architecturally, the Cathedral of Morelia compared against other Cathedrals in Mexico is similar to the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, Puebla Cathedral, and even inside the Cathedral of Guadalajara.
# The cathedral is the most emblematic and representative buildings of Morelia given their height, since it has two tall towers that can be seen throughout the valley of the city. For his height, the towers of the Catedral de Morelia (66.8 m) are the fourth highest in Mexico after the towers of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe (Cathedral Unfinished) in Zamora de Hidalgo (105 m) of the cathedral in Villahermosa (80 m) and the Sanctuary of Guadalupe, San Luis Potosi (68 m).
# Has a unique scenic beauty lighting placed by the company that lit the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On weekends, the cathedral offers a sound and light show with this lighting.
# The cathedral is dedicated to the Transfiguration and its interior houses two highly venerated image, Sacred Heart of Jesus who is the patron saint of the city, and the Lord of the Sacristy a Christ very old paste made of cornstalks. Which is much visited and loved by the congregation.
# Its beautiful architecture and history are other reasons why it has become an icon of the city.
# Inside this enclosure because of its beauty, sound and spacious sound, set for a variety of artistic and cultural events as the International Organ Festival in Morelia, and the International Music Festival of Morelia.
The current cathedral of Morelia was not the only cathedral in the city has had since 1580, when civil and ecclesiastical powers were transferred from Patzcuaro Michoacan to Valladolid (Morelia previous name), opened a cathedral, much lower the current size and artistic value. That building was located on the corner of the present streets of Corregidor and Abasolo. However, due to growth experienced by the city at the end of s. Sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and because of a fire in 1584 severely affected the former cathedral building, it became necessary to think of another temple, larger, robust and important. That is why at the beginning of s. XVII the cathedral chapter began efforts to build the new cathedral.
Many projects were proposed, but until mid-century the project was accepted by the Italian architect Vincenzo Barrochio, also known as the Plaster Vicente Barroso by the Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, Duke of Albuquerque on March 22, 1660 concluding continuous procedures and construction projects over a long period of almost 80 years.
On May 6, 1660 the first stone of the building was laid by Bishop Fray Marcos Ramírez del Prado. The building itself was given by Vicenzo Barrochio until his death in 1692, why the great architect could not see completed his monumental work. However, only 52 years after the death of the teacher, his pupils got through the daunting task of architecture, so that the magnificent work was completed in 1744.
The cathedral suffered several raids by the army for independence, in the year 1810. By the end of the nineteenth century built the perimeter fence that marks the atrium. In the late 90s of the twentieth century restoration work carried out various internal and external, thereby better preserved the beauty of the building. Also, in the early twenty-first century, opened the new stage lighting of the cathedral of Morelia.

The Citadel is sometimes referred to as Mohamed Ali Citadel (Arabic: قلعة محمد علي Qalaʿat Muḥammad ʿAlī), because it contains the Mosque of Mohamed Ali (or Muhammad Ali Pasha), which was built between 1828 and 1848, perched on the summit of the citadel. [4] This Ottoman mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali's oldest son, who died in 1816. However, it also represents Muhammad Ali's efforts to erase symbols of the Mamluk dynasty that he replaced. When Ottoman ruler Muhammad Ali Pasha took control from the Mamluks in 1805 he altered many of the additions to the Citadel that reflected Cairo's previous leaders. One obvious change that Muhammad Ali enacted pertained to the uses of the Citadel's northern and southern enclosures. During the Mamluk period the southern enclosure was the residential area, but Muhammad Ali claimed the northern enclosure as the royal residence when he took power. He then opened the southern enclosure to the public and effectively established his position as the new leader. [5].

According to Wikipedia:
Postman's Park is a small green memorial garden in the City of London. It is located between King Edward Street, Little Britain and Angel Street. It was created in 1880 from the churchyards of St Leonard, Foster Lane and St Botolph-without-Aldersgate together with the graveyard of Christ Church Greyfriars. St Leonard's had been a ruin since the Great Fire and was probably demolished at the time of the creation of the park. St Botolph's is still open and stands at the north east corner of the park. Christ Church was detached from its graveyard and is now a ruin on the other side of King Edward Street.
The park was the idea of the painter George Frederick Watts who wanted to celebrate people who may otherwise have been forgotten. Its name celebrates the postmen who work in the principal London post office and the former sorting office in King Edward Street.
A wall in the park has 34 hand-painted tiles paying tribute to everyday people who sacrificed their lives helping others. The hand-lettered tiles were made by Royal Doulton.
The park features in the film Closer - Natalie Portman's character takes her pseudonym 'Alice Ayres' from one of the painted tiles, as Jude Law's character discovers at the end of the film.
A few weeks ago, Smokey came by to take me to lunch for my birthday and to take a few pictures and say goodbye. He's been a part of my life since I was 7 or 8 and I feel I owe much of who I am, to him. When I was growing up, he was the boyfriend who, in the words of my mother, "came over and never left". But he was more than that. For 6 or 7 formative years, Smokey was the father I never had. And, when I grew to a point where I didn't need that, he gracefully transitioned into being my friend. To this day, we talk, laugh and enjoy each other's company with an ease that I've too long taken for granted.
Smokey lives by his own rules and always has. On one hand, this has meant never having to compromise his values for a paycheck. On the other hand, he lives beneath the poverty line and can barely make ends meet. As I write this, I hear a memory of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof saying "I realize, of course, it is no shame to be poor. But it is no great honor, either!" I think that quote says it all because Smokey is one of the most proud people I have ever met. Poverty is something he endures but it doesn't define his sense of worth or self esteem. Articulate, anachronistic, compassionate and intelligent, Smokey taught me early on that money is not the same thing as virtue. People with money are not "good people" any more than people without are "bad people".
But Smokey, anachronistic and poor as he is, lives, as we all do, in a "punish the victim" society. Marin County, like most places in the world, isn't run by people who are looking out for the "little guy", it's run by the rich, for the rich. And now, because Marin has finally become too expensive to live in, Smokey is leaving for a part of the world where he can live on his meager retirement with more than a hole in a wall to call his own.
I'm proud of him for finding a way to survive and take care of himself in his later years. But it saddens me to see him leave. In many ways, Smokey embodies the Marin County that I grew up in. Before the rock stars, movie stars, LucasFilm and all the developers, Marin was a funky little oasis. Now it's a place where you're either a millionaire or you work for one. And those of us who are not millionaires are having a harder and harder time staying here.
I wonder what will happen when all of us "little guys" are gone? Who will make the espresso drinks?

Taking approximately one hour, the walk starts with a dazzling light spectacle at St Mary’s Cathedral and moves onto installations at Hyde Park Barracks Museum, The Mint, Parliament House, The State Library of New South Wales, The Royal Botanic Garden’s Palace Garden Gate and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with special features including the spectacular Downer Macquarie Arch and the stunning illumination of the Opera House sails fulfilling the amazing Vivid Light experience.
The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who, in 2003, received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour.
The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. Currently, it is the most recently constructed World Heritage Site to be designated as such, sharing this distinction with such ancient landmarks as Stonehenge and the Giza Necropolis. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centres in the world.
The Sydney Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It sits at the northeastern tip of the Sydney central business district (the CBD), surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove) and neighboured by the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The Opera House was formally completed in 1973, having cost $102 million.

Walking around the beach after sunset, between the crumbling cliffs, hemmed in by the tide I was looking for one last photo before I headed back up the wooded valley away from the coast. I noticed these three pebbles grouped together at the edge of the limestone pavement with the fresh water stream that runs down through the valley and across the beach to the sea flowing over them. The late evening soft pink glow of the sky made the rock below seem to glow itself and the round stones and blurred water seemed to me the perfect compliment to the soft light.
I would have liked to have spotted this scene earlier while the sun was still above the horizon and it's light was caught in the water making every drop sparkle. Although I'm not certain that this lighting would have suited the scene so well it would have been nice to compare and contrast the two lighting conditions. Maybe next time, although these pebbles will surely be long gone by then.
Piedras Blancas is located on California's central coast, just north of San Simeon. The point is named for a white rock out cropping located just off the end of the point. In the 1866, this location was chosen to fill the gap between the lighthouses at Point Conception and Point Sur.
The Piedras Blancas Light Station was completed in 1875. The original tower was 100 feet tall and housed a first-order Fresnel lens. In 1876 a two-story Victorian style dwelling and a storage building were added.
Piedras Blancas Light Station was operated by US Lighthouse Service until 1939 when the Coast Guard assumed command. Structural damage to the tower caused by earthquakes and new technology eventually replaced many of the functions of the lightkeepers as they became automated. The lens, lantern room, ornate railing and the upper portion of the tower were removed by the U. S. Coast Guard in 1949 when they judged that the tower could no longer safely support the lantern room due to a large crack about 25 feet down from the top. The crack was the result of an earthquake occurring on the last day of 1948 with an epicenter quite close to the lighthouse. The lens was then loaned to the Cambria Lions Club for care and display in Cambria. It now stands near the Veterans' Memorial building on the Pinedorado grounds in downtown Cambria.
In place of the old light an automatic electric drum aero-rotating beacon with a 36-inch lens was installed. Operating in conjunction with a 1,000 watt electric bulb, it was capable of casting a light beam a distance 18 miles from its altitude of 141 feet above sea level.
The Coast Guard subsequently relinquished control and management of the Piedras Blancas Light Station to The Bureau of Land Management on October 12, 2001.

Palawan - Puerto Princess
