As I mentioned in my last post, I certainly still have more photographs to post from both my charity bike ride in Morocco and the DMU Boston meetup, but I've put off posting shots from the BU Photo Club twilight shoot at Lo Presti Park for far too long.
This particular shot was one that I had flagged as a keeper the moment I reviewed it on the LCD of my camera when I shot it. I've put off posting it because I couldn't decide whether or not people looking at the photo would like how the old pier posts blend into the blackness of the cityscape (I figured y'all wouldn't.) After several weeks of going back and forth, I was reminded of the fact (again) that this is my photograph and I like- no- love the colors and tones in this and even though I do like it when others say they enjoy my work, it's shouldn't become my primary motive for pursuing photography as I do- and it's not.
Also, I love me some purple.

Jermaine Riley might not be a household name just yet but he's certainly worth keeping an eye on.
Hello Earth is Jermaine's latest release following his previous records; Goodbye Krypton (which was his debut record) and Nine Ten Eleven - The Refixes (which was composed of remakes). Both of which along with a couple of his singles are all available for free download, just like this latest one.
Mixing soulful R&B with a cool hip hop dance rhythm, Hello Earth makes for a great club album or something to hold on to if you simply need some smoothing tracks for evening company.
Former member of Brit pop and R&B group, FMD, Jermaine Riley is slowly but surely carving a name for himself in the scene as a solo artist. Showcasing his love for one of the most well-known superheroes the world over, Superman; Riley packs Hello Earth with 11 cuts that range from R&B mellow mixes to upbeat dance cuts.
Paying homage to the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster; the album chronicles Superman's transition from leaving Krypton and moving to Earth. I guess, you can say it's a concept album of sorts. The songs are both catchy and easy to listen to. You'll find traces of Ne-Yo, Usher and Chris Brown as you listen.
Track like Smallville beautifully features Jermaine's vocal range. It's a sweet song that you can pop onto your player and enjoy without much fuss. A few must-listen cuts include Wonder Woman ft. Lioness; Peaceful Day ft. Cherri V and of course, title track, Hello Earth.
Jermaine Riley is an artist that you shouldn't miss out on especially if you love R&B. Unlike his previous releases which featured covers or 90s samples, Hello Earth is all about the artist. It comes with original cuts and a nice (not to mention) fresh take on the concept album. Really enjoyable piece that you should be downloading right now.

The island is part of the Bismarck Archipelago and is often described as having the shape of a musket. The tropical island of New Ireland is long, narrow and mountainous covered by several mountain ranges and dense rain forests. For much of its 360 kilometers in length, its width varies between less than 10 km to 40 km, yet the central mountainous spine is very steep and rugged. The highest peak is Mount Taron in the Hans Meyer Range (2,379 meters). The island lies between two and five degrees south of the Equator.
New Ireland is surrounded by the Bismarck Sea in the southwest and by the Pacific Ocean in the northeast.

This is my beautiful friend Annie. She had her wedding in November--it was the first I've shot. It was such a wonderful time, I don't know how some people get through weddings without shedding a tear... they always choke me up at the vows! I couldn't decide whether to attempt to remove the vignette or not. I'm leaving it for now and may remove it for her for their prints.
I rented a few lenses from BorrowLens.com, and I highly recommend them! The day they were due back I had a couple classes I couldn't make time between to run to FedEx. The guy I was in contact with was so nice, instead of charging me the 10% late fee, he just charged me for an extra day, which was much much less. It's rare to see a company care more about their customers than their bottom line, so if you ever plan on renting, check them out!

My mom wanted to take her umpteenth walk along the beach, my dad was hanging out by the boardwalk sketching, so I decided to see Daytona by foot. Not the main drag that has high end hotels on one side, and $30/night motels on the other, but some of the less tourist-ridden areas. First, I walked down Main Street, which caters to bikers in a way I've never seen before. Harley store after leather shop after biker bar after Harley store. I did, however, smile mightily as I passed one of those bars and heard Tom Petty's Free Fallin' playing on the radio. I don't care if you're 25 or 55, I think everyone has memories of driving around in the summer with that song playing on the radio.
After that, I walked over the bridge, onto the mainland, and across on Beach St, which clearly used to be the hub of Daytona Beach nightlife. There were beautiful shops, a quaint street setting, trees planted all along... and 2/3 of the shops were empty. It was sad to see only a handful of restaurants and antique shops clinging to life on what used to be the place to be in the 1960s. They had posters up in the windows of the empty shops with pictures from that era, proclaiming how you, too, should play a part in preserving Daytona's history.
Along that road, I found this old car dealership from the lat 60s, all boarded up and dirty. It's hard to say how long it's been in that state.

Make sure you view this with your screen quite bright... But I think my screen isn't very bright to begin with so you're probably fine. :)
Okay, here are my ten facts! I was tagged by Erin ♥LivingGrace.
1. This is my brother. :) He's fourteen.
2. He was kind of nervous about me taking pictures of him... This is the only photo I got where he didn't panic and pull a funny face haha.
3. I know it's ridiculous how I always fall back on Harry Potter when I have to write ten facts, but I am currently having an HP book marathon. :) I'm up to Goblet of Fire.
4. Harry Potter's awesome.
5. I cannot wait for the Deathly Hallows movie.
6. Hmm. I just remembered these are supposed to be ten facts about ME. Oh well!
7. I am an extremely eclectic person in taste, as you can probably tell in my photography. I'm the same, if not worse, with my clothes and music taste.
8. I got my learner's permit last spring, I'm probably going to take driving classes this fall...
9. I didn't know you could get your learner's permit at fifteen in Florida! D:
10. My favorite TV show is probably House by now. They've cancelled so many of my favorite shows this year! D: I do love House though, you should watch it.
Possibly the most random 10-facts in the history of the world.
If I tagged you it's because I love your photos and I want to know more about you. :)

One of the two experiments on this self portrait.
When it seems like the world around's just breaking
And it feels like there's no one else around you
And it's quiet there's a silence in the darkness
And it sounds like the carnival is over
As you walk in the crowded empty spaces
And you stare at the emptiness around you
You wanna go to the city and the bright lights
And get away from the sadness around you
'Cause I will be there and you will be there
We'll find each other in the dark
And you will see and I'll see it too
'Cause we'll be together in the dark
'Cause if it's coming for you
Then it's coming for me
'cause I will be there
'Cause we'll need each other in the dark
And if it terrifies you then it terrifies me
'Cause I will be there
So we've got each other in the dark
As I look in to the sky the stars bright as eyes
You want me to take you over there
I want you to stay with me
'cause you're not the only one
The only one
No no
Don't worry you're not the only one
'Cause if it's coming for you
Then it's coming for me
But I will be there
'Cause we'll need each other in the dark
And if it's panicking you then it's panicking me
But I will be there
So we've got each other in the dark
In the dark
In the dark
We'll need each other in the dark
In the dark
In the dark
We'll hold each other in the dark
Now we're save together in the dark
'Cause we've got each other in the dark
Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.
made Explore (surprisingly) #273 on 7/03 (thanks everyone!)
I recently returned from a week in my home town, Omaha (for Fathers Day, the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium, music, good friends, etc).
I spent some time in parts of the Lauritzen Gardens, the 100 acre Omaha Botanical Gardens.
Captured this guy with a 200mm telephoto (unfortunately he and his friends refused to fly any closer to the edge of the marsh for a better shot).

Sometimes what make me like a photograph are the smallest of details. In the photograph below of Waterlemon Cay it is the couple walking along the beach. Without them I don't think this photo has the same impact. There are quite a few people that claim the snorkeling around Waterlemon Cay is some of the best snorkeling on St. John. If you ask me however it is pretty good almost anywhere on St. John. I also want to mention a new web site that I am lucky to be a contributor and guest editor for. It is a new project from Stuck in Customs photographer Trey Ratcliff called HDR Spotting. Trey is using this venue as another outlet for great photographers to share the world of HDR photography with everyone. I encourage you all to go check it out and see all the great work being posted but be sure you have some extra time on your hands because you may find yourself staying awhile. Part of this project is selecting guest editors that review the submission and post the photographs they feel are some of the best out there and I was honored to be chosen as one of the first guest editors. If you have work you would like to contribute post a comment here on my blog with a link to your work and I will go check it out.
From My Blog 50% Chance of Rain:
Love Me On Black. :P
"He (or she) has such a heart-shaped face." How often do you hear that? I hear it often enough. Think about it. Just imagine the bone-structure required for a face to look like that (nevermind the vampiric hairline that would be required :P LOL!). I know! I know! It's such a literal interpretation. But what else do people mean by that? That their face looks like a real, physical heart? Wouldn't that be even more grotesque? "Uh, excuse me, but I think your left eye has a myocardial valve dysfunction. Maybe you should see a facial cardiologist about that." I know. I'm being silly. And I'm just having fun, too. :D
I'll just say that this one's being sent out to all my FlickrFriends... with love (and a rather large dollop of silliness, too). :P :D
Seriously, though. Couldn't you just love a guy with a face like this? Hmm. Then again, maybe that's why women find Dracula so sensual. With a hairline like that, he would have a rather heart-shaped face, wouldn't he? (Oh, jeez. I need to stop. I'm killing myself! ROFLOL! I'm putting away the liquify tool, and the bad jokes, too. According to Wikipedia:
Postman's Park is a small green memorial garden in the City of London. It is located between King Edward Street, Little Britain and Angel Street. It was created in 1880 from the churchyards of St Leonard, Foster Lane and St Botolph-without-Aldersgate together with the graveyard of Christ Church Greyfriars. St Leonard's had been a ruin since the Great Fire and was probably demolished at the time of the creation of the park. St Botolph's is still open and stands at the north east corner of the park. Christ Church was detached from its graveyard and is now a ruin on the other side of King Edward Street.
The park was the idea of the painter George Frederick Watts who wanted to celebrate people who may otherwise have been forgotten. Its name celebrates the postmen who work in the principal London post office and the former sorting office in King Edward Street.
A wall in the park has 34 hand-painted tiles paying tribute to everyday people who sacrificed their lives helping others. The hand-lettered tiles were made by Royal Doulton.
The park features in the film Closer - Natalie Portman's character takes her pseudonym 'Alice Ayres' from one of the painted tiles, as Jude Law's character discovers at the end of the film.
In the past I had noticed the occassional colors you'll see in fractured ice. Turns out, that stressed ice, like a lot of clear solids, can have some polaraizing effect, which if dense and complex enough can be apparent to the naked eye. The next step of course would be to toss in a polarizer to capture the effect even more [see shots below]. Here I've gone a few steps further. This is a shot of a sheet of ice that is backlit by polarized ice and taken in 'cross polarized' light- so that only light that's had it's polarization changed gets through, Theres a bit of stray light that's gotten through as well. I created the sheet of ice by freezing it in a dog bowl. turns out that you'll get ncier crystals if you can get the ice to freeze slowly from fewer nuclei rather than quickly from many, then thinned the ice a lot by blowing and rubbing it - that creates the effect centrally. The top and bottom sections of ice were where I had sprinkled a bit of snow into the water, partly to cool it down, but also to see what effect it would have. The effect about a third of the way down from this is cool.
I like the way this eneded up looking like a breaking wave.
This is a composite of multiple shots, the original was over 10,000 pixels in height- I would be nice to print this out ceiling to floor poster sized...
email me if you are interested in the original version.

Langania village, Tantanua dance (mask dance) and the Sing-sing of the malagan people.
Sing-sing is a gathering of a few tribes or villages in Papua New Guinea. People arrive to show their distinct culture, dance and music. The aim of these gatherings is to peacefully share traditions. Villagers paint and decorate themselves for sing-sings.

Malagan ceremonies are the most large-scale and famous of the many events that take place within the malagan culture. They take place irregularly, and are typically large and complex events, taking several days, and requiring months or years of preparation.
While a malagan ceremony is always held in the name of one or more people who have died in recent years, it is not at all merely a mortuary rite. Many other interactions take place within the overall event, including announcements, repayment of debts, recognition of obligations, resolution of disputes, and many other customary activities.
Malagan carvings
Malagan carvings, now world-famous, are the wooden carvings which are created for use in malagan ceremonies. Traditionally these were burnt at the conclusion of the event; in modern times most are now retained, as the carving tradition is now only known by a few.

Dozens of handicaped people invaded the YPFB (national oil & gas company) compound in Santa Cruz, threatening to blow up 3 gas bottles in case of expulsion. In the morning of Aug. 12, clashes with the company's workers left various hurt on both sides, but the handicapped managed to stay.

A short stop by the road. I took the opportunity to photograph the grass!
Grass flowers have always appealed to me.
I remember that when I was a kid, fog grass gave me terrible hayfever. It made me itch all over and my eyes ran so much that I could hardly see. Yet, I thought the grass was so beautiful that I picked bunches of it to take home to my mother!!
Now I'm happy just to photograph it.
Going through my photos recently, someone was looking over my shoulder and when I came to the grass pictures, they said, well there's some you can delete. :-O
I am glad to find plenty of people on Flickr who recognise the beauty of grass.
Here are some of my favourite 'grass' pics. No doubt there are many more... feel free to post a link to your best grass shot(s) in the comments box! :-)

Golden Braids (by one under the sun... ok, so it's wheat and not grass, but still a similar theme!)
Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.
This wasn't my original idea for today, but I ended up liking this picture better. I love windows.
Such an awesome outfit couldn't be portrayed in any other way than as Raoul Duke immortalized it. And who's better than Facundo aka The Fury, and not casual owner of the outfit, to model for us. I am not sure why there is a mexican-Peter Jackson-look-alike too, but it's all in the name of art!

The Ubiquitous Chip, Hillhead, Glasgow, Scotland
From the Ubiquitous Chip website: The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
The Ubiquitous Chip is no stranger to awards, but we never take them for granted. We’ve been awarded the Good Food Guide Readers’ Restaurant of the Year for Scotland 2013 and most recently we were awarded Condé Nast Traveller Gold Standard 2014. 2011 saw Ingredients nominated for 5 various Cultural and Experiential categories at the Scottish and UK Events Awards, and the Arts & Business Scotland Awards. The late Ronnie himself was recognised by his peers with the CIS lifetime achievement award.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.

Pretty simple set-up - bought the gourds and pumpkins from the local supermarket. Pulled the wheat stalks and flowers out of an "autumn bouquet" also from the supermarket. The corn and hay came from the local nursery. Used the same black satin backdrop my better half (HipChicklette) used for her submission.
Two cheap eBay flash triggers set about 7 feet away at 45 degree angles from the scene. Flashes aimed at the (white) ceiling, set at about 1/4 - 1/2 power. 50mm lens, Manual Mode, f/5.6, 1/250 sec.
Using Aperture 2, I burned the corn stalk, and pumpkin and gourd on the right. I actually could have lived without it, but it toned it down just a tad. I had to clone in some hay on the left side because you could see some floor beneath. I added 5% to contrast and a slight crop. I wish I had removed the rubber band from the corn, but I liked how they stayed together.

Still learning about flash photography. It is not easy, and I have several blown shots from being too hot or too cold. I guess a flash meter would help, rather than me "eyeballing it". :)

Ever since I was young, I've had a very special bond with my Grandpa Al. We decided when I was in my early teens that we were soul mates. Not in the way you traditionally understand that term, but in a way that we both understood. We've always been able to tap into each other's spirits in a way nobody else can. In many ways, I am just like my grandpa. I love to tell stories, and often times I run off on tangents that take longer than the original story itself ever would have taken to tell. I don't like people to rush me to my point. I'm proud. I'm passionate. I wear my heart on my sleeve. And it doesn't take much to make me tear up and get emotional. These are all traits I believe I've inherited from my grandpa.
Every year for probably the last twenty years, my grandpa writes me a special note for my birthday. He always includes some bits of wisdom. Perhaps a poem he wrote, perhaps the words of another poet. But he never ceases to pass along some idea to me that he believes (and rightly so) will help to shape me into a stronger, warmer, better woman. And every year I've tucked those notes away for safe keeping. I pull them out occasionally, and invariably wind up tearing up as I read them. But there are a few quotes that have stuck with me so firmly that I need not pull out the letters to be reminded of their sentiment. The title to this photo is an excerpt from a poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox that my grandpa included in a letter to me during my junior year of college. It pops into my head at the most obscure times and fills me with warmth, love and comfort.
I can't think of anyone besides my parents who has influenced me in the way that my grandpa has. I hope that I have become the woman he always believed I would be. My gut tells me that I still have a ways to go. I'm sure my grandpa will weigh in on this at our 4th of July barbeque this year.
One Ship Sails East
One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

Another from the archives. One of the outtake shots from my assignment for the Company developing a Wind Farm in the North Palm Springs area. Again the original image was a Kodachrome 64 slide that I scanned with an Epson Perfection V500 Photoscanner. The shot was taken under intense light conditions early in the morning with the sun still low in the sky . I used Photoshop CS5 to correct the color to what it was on the slide. Other than the cropping and the Photoshop color corrections this is pretty much as shot. I selected the title because the arms of the wind turbines remind me of the arm exercises that we used to do in our Physical Training (PT) in U. S. Army OCS training.
