3 D Calla has to be Viewed On Black
Calla lilies are one of the most beautiful flowers with a unique form of the flower. Calla lilies come in a wide array of colors viz., shades of green, pink, purple, yellow and orange.
Callas are also known by such other common names viz.,arum lily, trumpet lily, Pig lily. Calla lilies are native to Southern Africa. Calla lilies are easy to grow and are generally grown from bulb or rhizome.
The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With exceptionally large males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight,[2] it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and the Bering land bridge and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru.
Lions live for approximately 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will resort to scavenging if the opportunity arises. While lions, in general, do not selectively hunt humans, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.
The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50% over the past two decades in its African range;[1] populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well-understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies.
Visually, the male is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The head of the male lion is one of the most widely recognized animal symbols in human culture. It has been depicted extensively in literature, in sculptures, in paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature.

"Traffic on Charoen Mueang road (taken in 1971)"
From: library.cmu.ac.th/ntic/en_picturelanna/detail_picturelann...
"San Pa Khoi area is an area situated opposite to Wat Gate area and with Charoen Mueang road in the middle. Before the arrival of railway to Chiang Mai, this San Pa Khoi area was a small community. The first community to settle here was the Ban-tha-sa-toy community (see detail of Tha-sa-toy community) at the back of the present San Pa Khoi market.
With the arrival of railway to Chiang Mai, a lot of Chinese from Bangkok moved into the area to make a living. This resulted in the area becoming an important business center in the city. Shops lay on both sides of Charoen Mueang road making it the center for sending goods to Bangkok. The agricultural products from the surrounding areas of Chiang Mai were rice, pig, tobacco and sealing wax. The community was also the site for distributing goods from Bangkok to other markets around Chiang Mai and upper Chiang Mai. One native of Chiang Mai mentioned that at that time San Pa Khoi area was filled with warehouses for transporting goods to other areas and it was always busy with buyers and ox carts which could be hired to haul goods. The majority of businesses was owned by Chinese business men, like Mr. Song Sae-ung (Ungkhapairoj). He remembers that he rode the train to buy salt, sugar and shrimp paste from Bangkok to be sold at his shop. Merchants from Lam-yai market and other surrounding markets would come to purchase his goods. Khun Anukornburee (an ancestor of Nimakorn family) started Leochunlee shop by selling bicycles shipped from Bangkok by rail.
The important center of this area was Kad-San Pa Khoi (San Pa Khoi market). There are no documents of when this market was established. However, it was believed that it might have been before 1926 because when King Rama VII visited Chiang Mai, the market already existed. There is evidence showing that there was a joint investment between Pra Pijitosod, Khun Anupolnakorn and Major General Anirutteawa (ML Feun Puengboon). At present, this San Pa Khoi market is a market which is well-known for delicious food, especially Chinese. There are shops on both sides of Charoen Mueang road. The famous Salapao Wikul (Chinese steamed bun) and Charoen Mueang restaurant can also be found here.
The center for Buddhists in this area is San Pa Khoi temple. It is situated at the side of San Pa Khoi market. Originally, its name was Wat Nang Leo and was located on the Ping river bank. But when the temple was flooded, it was moved to the present site. Thus, it was called Wat San Pa Khoi after the name of the area. There is evidence showing that the chedi in this temple was built in the era of Prachao Kawilowrojsuriyawongse and the ceremony for the chedi was in 1868. From the survey of this temple, it was found that the present viharn was completed on 14 March, 1929.
Though this area has a separate Chinese temple for Chinese merchants, it is understood that this temple is also the center for Chinese Buddhists in the area.
The San Pa Khoi area met its decline when the road construction between Bangkok and Chiang Mai was completed. The road transportation replaced the railway because it was faster and because the train ran only two days a week. Furthermore, having cars meant that people could go directly to the production sites without having to go through the middlemen at San Pa Khoi market anymore.

Raccoon ~ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~The raccoon (Listeni/ræˈkuːn/, Procyon lotor), sometimes spelled racoon, also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, northern raccoon and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The raccoon is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg (8 to 20 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur which insulates against cold weather. Two of the raccoon's most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, which are themes in the mythology of several Native American tribes. Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years. The diet of the omnivorous raccoon, which is usually nocturnal, consists of about 40% invertebrates, 33% plant foods, and 27% vertebrates.
The original habitats of the raccoon are deciduous and mixed forests, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas, where some homeowners consider them to be pests. As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across the European mainland, the Caucasus region and Japan.
Though previously thought to be solitary, there is now evidence that raccoons engage in gender-specific social behavior. Related females often share a common area, while unrelated males live together in groups of up to four animals to maintain their positions against foreign males during the mating season, and other potential invaders. Home range sizes vary anywhere from 3 hectares (7 acres) for females in cities to 50 km2 (20 sq mi) for males in prairies. After a gestation period of about 65 days, two to five young, known as "kits", are born in spring. The kits are subsequently raised by their mother until dispersal in late fall. Although captive raccoons have been known to live over 20 years, their average life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years. In many areas, hunting and vehicular injury are the two most common causes of death.
"It's hard to be a man
But I'm doing all I can
I'm ready to give this all I have
I'm ready to be amazed
'Cause I'm standing here alone
Trying to make this life my own
And nothing will keep this heart from beating
I'm still breathing
Promise me some dignity
If I were to stand and die here
'Cause my heart is somewhere else
It's a pain I've never felt
Time's racing (Please slow down)
I got to find my way out
I'm hopeless (But hoping)
My lungs won't fail me now
'Cause I'm still breathing."

week of confessions ends today!
So... I'm running out of things to confess. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve. I guess that in itself is a confession... I'm either revealing too much or I don't tell ANYONE (save for a very special few). I think I should go back to being more secretive. I think sometimes that I reveal too much of my true genuine emotions and someday they are going to come back and bite me in the ass. Some such examples of me revealing too much can be seen here, here, and here. (just three examples) I look back at them now and think, "what a melodramatic baby..." but I guess they documented how my day was that day. Man, this 365 project is making me realise a lot about myself. It's getting TOO HEAVY, PEOPLE! :-P
I really can't imagine my life without this project, actually. I don't know what I'll do in January when it's done. Do a second year? Thoughts on that..?
Song of the Day - Handsome Furs - Sing! Captain
"There's a town, just a little town
Raining cloud, a hollow sound
When our lover gather round
And if they're cold
Then they're cold
Feed them wine, feed them chrome
We hate this place here
It's our home, It's our home
And your car-collapsing trees and I
Could turn them back to sound
With the torches in our hands we will reduce it
To the ground"

Trying to chose between the black & white and the color on this one nearly killed me (see first comment for the color image). You really can't imagine how much time I spent flipping back and forth and agonizing and changing my mind. At last I made the decision to post the black & white because I noticed I had a pattern going with my last few shots: color, b/w, color, b/w, color ... well, it was b/w's turn I guess.
I really do love both versions, and both types of presentation in general. For my recent work, the b/w I feel can present a stronger overall composition and image - without the "distraction" of color. However, the color often seems more beautiful, and more reminiscent of the scene itself.
When I was a painter (and still, as a designer) I am very colorful and think of my strength in the use of color to be among my greatest talents as an artist. So, it's not so easy for me to leave the beauty of color behind. But, the strength and impact of b/w, well ... ahhhh! I just go back and forth a million times.
I know that whichever I choose there will be many who will prefer the other (but also many who will be quite happy with the choice). I value critique and the opinions of others, but ultimately it is my own opinion that I need to find each time. Usually I can find it. With this photo, I could not.
On the afternoon of October 27, a rally organized in front of the Ministère de la Crise du Logement, rue de la Banque, turned into an impromptu demonstration with approx. 100 to 200 people. Crossing the Boulevard Haussman, they walked rather (quickly !) from Place de la Bourse to the 50 rue Laffite, where a vacant building had been previously spotted. Gathering in front of the fenced door, they deployed banners and put stickers on the wall to protest about the existence of vacant buildings in Paris while people can't have access to decent housing. The police intervened to clear the sidewalk, pushing away the protesters, which resulted in some limited confrontation. A quiet stand-off ensued for about an hour, after which everybody walked back to the rue de la Banque.
Merci de lire les explications en début d'album / Please read the explanations at the beginning of the set
Quiapo Church, officially known as Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, is a Roman Catholic church located in the District of Quiapo, Manila, in the Philippines. The church is one of the most popular churches in the country. It is home to the Black Nazarene, a much venerated statue of Jesus Christ which many people believe has miraculous attributes. The church was painted cream after the original Mexican Baroque edifice was burned down in 1928. Also known as St. John the Baptist Parish, the church at present belongs to the Archdiocese of Manila. The current rector is Rev. Msgr. Jose Clemente Ignacio, who succeeded Msgr. Josefino Ramirez (the Vicar General of the archdiocese) upon the latter's appointment as rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Maysilo, Mandaluyong City.
The Quiapo Church holds a weekly novena every Friday and a procession every year on January 9 devoted to the Black Nazarene. Both are attended by thousands of devotees. Many sick people come to see the Black Nazarene, hoping that getting a chance to pray in front of its miraculous image would heal their sicknesses.

---- Selge (in Greek Σελγη) was an important city in Pisidia, on the southern slope of Mount Taurus, modern Antalya Province, Turkey, at the part where the river Eurymedon River (Turkish: Köprüçay)forces its way through the mountains towards the south.
The town was believed to be a Greek colony, for Strabo[1] states that it was founded by Spartans, but adds the somewhat unintelligible remark that previously it had been founded by Calchas. The acropolis of Selge bore the name of Kesbedion.[2] The district in which the town was situated was extremely fertile, producing abundance of oil and wine, but the town itself was difficult of access, being surrounded by precipices and beds of torrents flowing towards the Eurymedon and Cestrus (today Aksu), and requiring bridges to make them passable. In consequence of its excellent laws and political constitution, Selge rose to the rank of the most powerful and populous city of Pisidia, and at one time was able to send an army of 20,000 men into the field. Owing to these circumstances, and the valour of its inhabitants, for which they were regarded as worthy kinsmen of the Spartans, the Selgians were never subject to any foreign power, but remained in the enjoyment of their own freedom and independence. When Alexander the Great passed through Pisidia (333 BC), Selge sent an embassy to him and gained his favour and friendship.[3] At that time they were at war with Termessos.
At the period when Achaeus had made himself master of Western Asia, Selge were at war with Pednelissus, which was besieged by them; and Achaeus, on the invitation of Pednelissus, sent a large force against Selge (218 BC). After a long and vigorous siege, the Selgians, being betrayed and despairing of resisting Achaeus any longer, sent deputies to sue for peace, which was granted to them on the following terms: they agreed to pay immediately 400 talents, to restore the prisoners of Pednelissus, and after a time to pay 300 talents in addition.[4] We now have for a long time no particulars about the history of Selge; in the 5th century AD Zosimus[5] calls it indeed a little town, but it was still strong enough to repel a body of Goths. It is strange that Pliny does not notice Selge, for we know from its coins that it was still a flourishing town in the time of Hadrian; and it is also mentioned in Ptolemy[6] and Hierocles. Independently of wine and oil, the country about Selge was rich in timber, and a variety of trees, among which the storax was much valued from its yielding a strong perfume. Selge was also celebrated for an ointment prepared from the iris root.[7]
The remains of the city consist mainly of parts of the encircling wall and of the acropolis. A few traces have survived of the gymnasium, the stoa, the stadium and the basilica. There are also the outlines of two temples, but the best conserved monument is the theater, restored in the 3rd century AD.
Halfway on the road to Selge from the Pamphylian coastal plain, a well-preserved Roman Bridge crosses the deep Eurymedon valley

Taken on September 7, 2007, the day when my parents came to Rennes to pay me a visit! Earlier, while I was returning back from INRIA, it was an action packed evening. I have uploaded some other shots as well!
I have observed that women photographers who often post their own, beautiful and amazing images are really famous (in terms of image hits/counts on flickr). Next comes the category of images which display intense emotions. I think smooch related images top this particular genre.
This one important reason as to why my photo-set I Love You fetches a great number of hits! (lol)
To step out of this barrier, please do take out some time to take a SLIDE Tour of HDR images that I made. I am sure that it'll be worth your time, efforts and patience!

The post-processing of this photo has been enough elaborated. From a single shot I do a HDR with Lock06 tone mapping to smooth shades and emphasize the texture of the stone. Then I have turned it to B&W with green filter. Next I have trimmed the sky of the original and I have stuck it in the B&W. I have intensified blue touching the curves, and I have turned the sky to B&W with red filter… and this is what it has left.

The gothic parochial cathedral of Santa Maria has the structure and dimensions of a cathedral, a status which it did not achieve despite various attempts made by the earls of Empuries to have it named as such.
It is one of the most interesting examples of Catalan religious gothic architecture.
The construction, which began in the thirteenth century and continued throughout the entire fourteenth century, was completed at the beginning of the fifteenth century when the façade, with its beautiful marble entrance, was finished. The interior, representative of the Mediterranean gothic style, contains: unique roman baptism fonts, an exceptional 15th century alabaster altar piece, two sarcophagus belonging to earls, and a gothic stained glass window, the alter piece “dels Dolors” from the 18th century, an organ from the 19th century and many other items of interest.
The bell tower, with gothic decorations, follows the architectural design of the 13 century roman Lombard influence.

I met my dad for bagels this morning. He and my mom have made some rather major decisions without even mentioning them to me.....I hate that. I don't need to be consulted, but it's weird to be out of the loop entirely.
He and I got into an intense discussion, no win really. ....He was asking me to bear the burden of my mother's anxiety. I can't do it. Right now I am hunting for a job, searching for an apartment despite my lack of income, trying to make some very major decisions about where my life is heading and with whom, and grappling with some pretty heavy heartache.
My mother is inventing reasons to be concerned and to lecture me, and then getting hurt when I can't handle it and choose to avoid her. At this point, I don't even consider avoidance immature - it's a lifesaving measure that I need to take on my own behalf.
I can't focus on my own needs, my own, job, apartment, choices and heartaches, if I'm weighed down by her constant worries. I can't carry my mother's burdens on top of my own. I just can't.
I've talked to her time and again about how damaging our relationship has become to my well-being. I've told her outright that if our relationship can't improve I have to walk away.
I know my dad means well. But he's asking something of me that I honestly can't give.

John R. St. John, who visited the Keweenaw region in 1845, cited the need for a lighthouse, or at least a beacon, at Copper Harbor in A True Description of the Lake Superior Country... published in 1846.
Reverend John H. Pitezel, a Methodist missionary to the Keweenaw during the late 1840’s recalled that “we had once before entered [Copper Harbor] in the night...when our only beacon was a globe lamp, sent out in a yawl, and placed upon a lone rock in the channel.” (Presumably Gull Rock)
Action providing improved navigational aids at Copper Harbor followed closely upon the Keweenaw copper rush. The shipwreck of the John Jacob Astor in 1844 and rapidly expanding Lake Superior shipping traffic influenced President Polk and Congress to authorize construction of the Copper Harbor Lighthouse in 1847. For $4,800, Charles Rude built the original 65-foot-tall split stone, whitewashed tower on Hays Point between 1848-1849 about of the steel tower.
A new lighthouse (the present one) was built in 1866, incorporating the light towers and keeper’s dwelling in the same building. We can only speculate why the present lighthouse was constructed. According to the building specifications, the original lighthouse was--at least in theory--imposingly structurally sound. Some lake lighthouses of the period were built too near the shoreline and suffered from the eroding action of the waves, but the local terrain does not lend itself well to this theory. It’s quite possible that poor construction methods and material by the original contractor led to a rapid structural decay. It is interesting that little, if any, trace of the original lighthouse remains at ground level, which may indicate that its building materials were used in the construction of the 1866 lighthouse and/or the repair of outbuildings. The 1866 dwelling’s attached up to fifteen miles. While briefly burning sperm oil, the light used lard oil up to 1887, when mineral oil was introduced. In 1919, as the light was converted to acetylene gas, the station became non-attendant. The range lightkeeper, Charles T. Davis, assumed maintenance responsibilities for the main light.
The present 62-foot steel tower was erected in 1933, with the light being converted to electricity in 1937. The current light is visible up to twenty-two miles. The light was described in 1907 as “a fixed white light, light, the 1st order light being the largest in use and the 6th order the smallest. The Fresnel lens was common throughout the Lighthouse Service. When the station became non-attendant, the lighthouse was leased to Dr. Roger T. Vaughan (assistant warden, Cook Co. Hospital, Illinois) in 1927 and was used by Dr. Vaughan and a number of his colleagues as a summer cottage. Their five-year lease was renewed in 1932 and again in 1937. Plans were made by the Government to sell the buildings at an appropriate time to avoid continued maintenance expenses.
Nicer on black. I've never felt the urge to use a black background before, but it was just immediately obvious that the white background wasn't working here, and colors are much nicer against a black background. There are some color space issues here and, e.g., the green of the barrel is duller in Firefox than in Photoshop here on my computer. If I had nothing else to do I could probably improve this somewhat, but there are bigger fish that need frying. Sigh.
Back to Pea Ridge National Military Park in NW Arkansas. This was a site of a major battle in the western theater of the U.S. Civil War. The western theater was never of any great significance to the war, though, so this is a bit of "big fish in a small pond".
The site has some wonderful prairie and woods, and they've reconstructed some of the areas, including dribbling the odd canon here and there.
Remember my previous picture of the little ECC88 Valve?
Well here's the wee beastie that it belongs to and she's a beauty :-)
This is a 1969/1970 Telequipment S51 Oscilloscope proudly bearing a small metal plate simply stating, "Made In England". Most of the components in there bear similar motifs as well as 'Made in Great Britain' and fair old chokes me up that we used to build such marvels. Not anymore....
This example I bought as a non-worker and after some scrounging about, (without paying through the nose!), I obtained some replacement valves for her and spent some time tidying up historic fiddles, (others previous attempts at repair!)
After a bit of a clean up and final checks I hooked her up to the mains and she finally sprung to life. I stood there with the biggest grin on my face ever :-)
Total cost of purchase and replacment parts - a massive £12:50, very nice.
(Considering there's 5 Mullard valves and a couple of Brimars I did rather well as most 'audiophiles' pay more than that for a single valve!!! Doesn't bear thinking about?!)
Will she languish on a shelf as a 'collectable'? Of course not, she's a good old workhorse and I'll soon be cracking that whip. An addition of a component tester I've already started to build, (makes my DIY electronics from scrap parts much simpler - the amount of times I've scrounged a part from a broken piece of equipment to find the scrounged component was one of the faulty ones!!), and plans for a curve tracer she'll be pressed into hard service. Of course an infra red interface will come in damn handy for checking and adjusting the shutter speeds on my old cameras too.
Much like those valves I get a warm fuzzy feeling that she's working. Unfortunately I'm as old as this piece of equipment and probably smell just as musty, (Ha, ha!)
At 8 PM Monday, December 3, 1837 William Lyon Mackenzie set out by horse down Yonge Street to scout the route for his attack on Toronto. At the top of Gallows Hill (below St Clair) he met Tory alderman John Powell, himself on patrol from the city. Mackenzie and his men took Powell prisoner. "Do you have a gun?" Mackenzie asked Powell. "No", Powell replied. Mackenzie took his word as a gentleman and sent him back towards the rebel headquarters at Montgomery's Tavern.
Powell lied about having a gun. He drew out two pistols and shot one of his guards in the back of the neck, killing him. Mackenzie heard the shot, headed back, saw Powell, fired a shot at him but missed. Powell closed range and fired at Mackenzie point blank but his gun flashed in the pan. Powell rode on to warn Toronto that the rebels were coming.
Trouble had been brewing in Upper Canada for some time and always at its centre was the fiery Scot William Lyon Mackenzie. Always a critic and self-proclaimed voice of the people, Mackenzie got elected to the Upper Canada Assembly and raised such hell that he was expelled three times, each time to be re-elected by his constituents. His primary targets in his newspaper articles and his diatribes were the lieutenant-governor and the colonial elite, dubbed the "Family Compact."
While moderate reformers such as Robert Baldwin tried to find a middle ground, things were made worse with the arrival of a new governor, Sir Francis Bond Head, an adventurer with no political experience. The governor got the reform Assembly dissolved and led a campaign based on fear and "loyalty." Mackenzie responded by issuing a Toronto Declaration, closely modeled on the American Declaration of Independence.
Historians have made note of the extenuating circumstances in the colony that made fertile ground for Mackenzie's agitation. There was an economic squeeze, crops were bad and the banks were foreclosing on farms. But in the final analysis the uprising in Toronto was uniquely the creation of Mackenzie's outrage. His ability to win over intelligent and cautious men was one of his strengths. But organization was one of his weaknesses. After haranguing some crowds in scattered meetings, he rode off to Toronto secure in the belief that thousands would rise to his cause.
The failure of the revolt was not necessarily a foregone conclusion. Confusion reigned in Toronto. The garrison was off quelling the insurrection in Lower Canada. The militia were a laughable lot, armed with some guns along with whips, hoes, canes and umbrellas.
Nevertheless, once surprise was lost, so was the enterprise. Mackenzie took the unfortunate decision of leading the rebels himself. He marched them off on Tuesday morning, December 4, riding at their head and wearing several overcoats to protect against bullets. Though the route seemed clear, the erratic Mackenzie seemed more interested in diversions. By the time the battle occurred, near College Street, a small picket under Sheriff William Jarvis had been organized.
The picket opened fire and being but 20 men, turned and ran. The front rank of rebels fired back and, as they were trained to do, dropped to the ground so that the next rank could fire over them. The back ranks thought the front rank had all been mowed down, panicked and ran away.
Now the initiative was with the loyalist forces, who got reinforcements from Hamilton, Niagara and as far away as Peel County. Militia chief James FitzGibbon organized three impressive columns, totaling 1500 men and on Wednesday marched up Yonge Street. The skirmish was an anticlimax. Only about 200 rebels stood their ground near Gallows Hill and they were quickly routed.
Many of the rebels fled or went into hiding or, like Mackenzie, bolted to the United States. Several prisoners were charged with treason. Twelve stood trial in Toronto. Six were convicted and Peter Matthews and Samuel Lount were hanged.
Historians have had a field day debating the consequences of the Rebellion of 1837. Obviously, as a revolution it was an abject failure. There was a time when Mackenzie's supporters, notably his grandson William Lyon Mackenzie King, argued that the Rebellion hastened the advent of responsible government, but few accept that idea today.
As for Mackenzie, he continued to agitate from a base on Navy Island. He started a newspaper in New York. But he was indicted under the "neutrality laws" and spent a year in prison. The more he saw of his beloved American-style democracy, the less he liked it and the more he repented his attempt at revolution. He returned to Toronto in 1850 after a general amnesty, re-entered politics, got elected and continued his campaign against hypocrisy and corruption. However much historians may denigrate his contribution, there are still many who see him as a unique voice of the people.

Tondo - Smoky Mountain - Manila - Philippine
Smokey Mountain is a large landfill in Manila, Philippines. Consisting of over two million tonnes of waste, it has operated for more than 40 years and is known for decomposing at such high temperatures that it will catch fire, a fact from which the location derives its name. Indeed, fires at Smokey Mountain have caused many deaths.
Smokey Mountain has a large squatter community, and it is estimated that 30,000 people live near the site, and make their living from picking through the rubbish at Smokey Mountain. In 1993, a joint venture agreement between the National Housing Authority (NHA) and R-II Builders Inc. (RBI) was made to build a low-cost housing project at Smokey Mountain. On 15 August 2007, this agreement was declared valid by the Philippine Supreme Court.
Projects have been enforced by the Government and non-government organizations to allow urban resettlement sites for the slum dwellers. According to a UN-Habitat report, over 20 million people in the Philippines live in slums, and in the city of Manila alone, 50% of the over 11 million inhabitants live in slum areas.

Bluesbandit1750 said that it is a Cooper's Hawk and I have another confirmation.
Coopers Hawk from Wikipedia...
"Cooper's Hawk was first described by French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1828. It is a member of the goshawk genus Accipiter. This bird was named after the naturalist William Cooper, one of the founders of the New York Lyceum of Natural History (later the New York Academy of Sciences) in New York. Other common names; Big Blue Darter, Chicken Hawk, Hen Hawk, Mexican Hawk, Quail Hawk, Striker and Swift Hawk[2]
The average size of an adult male, at 312 g (.69 lb), 39.37 cm (15.5 in) long and has a wingspan of 71.12 cm (29 in). The adult male is significantly smaller than the average female, at 500 g (1.1 lb), 45 cm (17.7 in) long and has a wingspan of 83 cm (32.67 in). All have short rounded wings and a very long tail with dark bands, round-ended at the tip. Adults have red eyes and have a black cap, with blue-gray upper parts and white underparts with fine, thin, reddish bars. Their tail is blue gray on top and pale underneath, barred with black bands. Immatures have yellow eyes and have a brown cap, with brown upper parts and pale underparts with thin black streaks mostly ending at the belly. Their tail is brown on top and pale underneath, barred with dark bands. "

Yupiii, another trip but this time in a cold city: Amsterdam.
The weather was so cold that I was reluctant to get my D300 out of it's bag.
Impossible to keep the camera in my hand, it was freeeezing.
Bikes are definitely part of the culture in Netherlands. You could see a whole family, dad, mum and the three kids all riding in the morning in a line, that's really funny. Those guys there could ride a bike by minus 5 degrees or even more... crazy !! :)
The black and white tone is almost natural there.

Buka Island is the second largest island in the Papua New Guinean province of Bougainville.
Buka is situated on Buka Island, Bougainville Province, Papua New Guinea. It has been the capital of the province during the Bougainville civil war. The former, or proper capital of Bougainville, Arawa was all but destroyed in 1990 as tensions reached a critical level in a civil uprising.
Buka today is a bustling, peaceful town, detached by water from the main island Bougainville, and the much publicized tension there.
On black, if you dare...
I realized I hadn't done anything cool with photoshop in a while, so I figured what better time to get my 'shop on than with the release of Left 4 Dead 2!
Out of all the photoshop projects I've done lately, I think this one was the most fun. It looks like I actually put some effort into it and is probably the coolest looking one so far. I decided on an original color scheme of purplish-blueish, rather than the official green/yellow. Except for the ripped thumb part (taken straight from the actual box art ._. ) everything is my own work. (But even that took a while to make it look right.)
The alternate (a.k.a. The one that's blatant advertising for the game) is in the comments. I was thinking about uploading it instead of the one here, but I had to go with the simplicity of this one. (Not the mention the word "dEAD" looks kinda funky)
P.S. I find it funny that I spent my night working on a Left 4 Dead pic, rather than actually playing it. Hmmmm... Well, that's what tonight is for. :D
