It seems fairy lights give you a very unusual facial structure, all the photos looked so funny. I had to run outside at 11.30 when I got home after realizing the photos I'd initially taken hadn't worked out, sorry it's a rush job :( I seemed to spend the entire day sleeping, or streaming tv, it's been one of those miserable days when you don't feel like dealing with anything and sit round eating vast amounts of chocolate instead :P I've now run out of House, NCIS, Castle & How I Met Your Mother - it's traumatic! I have nothing left to watch, any suggestions of good stuff are very welcome.

Inspired by anyone with a love of fairy lights :)

Anyhow I'm desperate for sleep as I'm up at 6 again for work, 4.5 hours sleep - hoorah. Night flickrites!

Day 117/365

OK, I promise to do something more interesting and creative for tomorrow's SP. Today is PJ day at my house, so I am not heading outside. LOL (Though I did have to open the door for some Jehovah's Witnesses ladies this morning, which I think they were as uncomfortable as I was standing there in my PJs!) HA!

Yet another shot, I was not bored with this series but I promise this would be the last on this place. I need to go and search for another unexplored location.

A new series following Another Day in Capital City. I rarely go to London these days, but this is my third visit with camera in hand during the past 12 months… and the atmosphere, the city noise, the r-u-s-h hits me like a tidal wave every time.

I seem to be finding myself inexorably drawn towards the potentially darker images in this series, at the moment!

The Rice Fields of Longsheng are about a two hour drive from the Chinese city of Giulin (Li River fame). This was taken from one of the many lookouts in the mountainside village of Ping'an. Although we didn't have the best of weather the rain did stop long enough for a few nice photo opportunities, like this one.

One of the many ground squirrels (aka marmots or groundhogs) of the Grand Canyon. Taken on the South Rim trail with a 55mm (equiv. 82mm), no crop. Despite the signs, the cute furry balls are clearly fed by the hords of tourists, otherwise they wouldn't display this behaviour (and size !).

Peacock bass is the common name in English for several species of tropical, freshwater fish of the genus Cichla native to the Amazon River basin of South America. These tropical fish are not true basses, but are rather cichlids. They also inhabit the waters of Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Panama, Singapore and parts of the USA (Guam, Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the United States Virgin Islands).

Sport fishermen have made these cichlids prized game fish for their fighting qualities, so much so that many travel agencies now arrange fishing trips to Brazil and Florida specifically to catch peacock bass.

Renowned American peacock bass fisherman and fishing author, Larry Larsen, refers to them as "freshwater bullies" due to their ferocious nature when hunting and their tendency to damage and sometimes destroy fishing gear when striking. Also, the most common techniques for catching them are similar to those for catching largemouth bass with the notable exception that peacock bass usually won't strike artificial worms -- a widely used lure among largemouth bass fisherman. In addition, fly fishing techniques, including lures such as poppers and large streamers, are becoming increasingly popular for catching these cichlids.

Despite their popularity among anglers, some naturalists have identified peacock bass as potential pests for causing ecological imbalances in some of their introduced areas.

By an unlucky chance a Fox fell into a deep well from which he could not get out. A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there.

"Oh, have you not heard?" said the Fox; "there is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down here in order to be sure to have water by me. Why don't you come down too?"

The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the well. But the Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the well.

"Good-bye, friend," said the Fox, "remember next time:

L'intérêt avec le martin, c'est qu'il a un territoire assez limité (1 km). Une fois repéré, il suffit de venir se poster discrètement, et attendre. L'attente peut être assez longue ( il m'est arrivé d'attendre 3 heures pour le voir 30 secondes). Mais, souvent il revient se poser sur un perchoir.

Ici, après ma première visite, j'ai installé ce perchoir, pour l'obliger à se poser à l'endroit qui convient le mieux (distance et exposition à la lumière). Puis, on attend !

Interesting thing with the kingfisher is that it lives within a relatively limited area (1 km). Once spotted, just come post quietly and wait. The wait can be quite long (I happened to wait 3 hours to see it 30 seconds). But often it came back and landed on a perch.

Here, after my first visit, I installed this perch, to force it to land at the place that best suits (distance and exposure to light).

Then you wait! And bingo, it comes. With a little practice, you can memorize the song and guess before it lands on the perch. I put here a link to the song of the kingfisher : www.oiseaux.net/chant/alcedo_atthis.mp3

Over the Rainbow on Black (much better and easier to see)

I decided to make my first post back one of my favorites from our recent trip to Brazil. Iguazu Falls was a true highlight of the trip. I have many shots from the Falls to process, and no matter how many I post, they won't do this place justice. The vastness of this location, with the 275+ falls ranging from small streams to true mammoths, is just amazing.

I had never witnessed a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow) before. While it was a little faint to the eye, you could still make it out pretty clearly, and the 30 second exposure helped to bring it out that much more. I decided not to over-process the shot and brighten and saturate things beyond the true scene. I'm not sure there was ever much risk, but I did enjoy the part about having to keep an eye out for jaguars when walking around the park at night.

I look forward to going through the numerous memory cards' worth of shots. We saw a lot of great sites in Brazil, but as is always the case, it's good to be back home. This was another trip that makes one reflect on how lucky we are here in the U.S.

I look forward to catching up with everyone's streams.

Lake Brienz, Switzerland, in the blue mood of a cloudy evening - SOOC, just a small crop done

I post this image, because i like the mood and the tones and layers of blue so much.

But also as a dedication to my friend kausthub, who was there at the same evening ............ and maybe it was even him, who took this shot.

He was there without his camera - miracles happen :-)) - but when he saw the colours of the beginning night, he absolutely wanted to capture these.

And even if he at that moment still let me shoot (with my camera, ha ha ha), he for sure encouraged and inspired me to try several modes (aperture and shutter speed priority, and white-balances and points of view and angles, and..., and..., and...) ......so i hope, it was me, bringing out this wonderful result :-)

Anyway - it is a beautiful shot, and i want to share it with you!

Only seconds later he for sure took over - watch his amazing photo here:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Aljafería Palace (Arabic:قصر الجعفرية Qasr Aljafariya, Spanish: Palacio de la Aljafería) is a fortified medieval Islamic palace built during the second half of the 11th century in the Moorish taifa of Zaragoza of Al-Andalus, present day Zaragoza, Spain. It was the residence of the Banu Hud dynasty during the era of Abu Jaffar Al-Muqtadir after abolishing Banu Tujibi of Kindah dynasty. the palace reflects the splendor attained by the kingdom of the taifa of Zaragoza at the height of its grandeur. The palace currently contains the Cortes (regional parliament) of the autonomous community of Aragon.

The structure holds unique importance in that it is the only conserved testimony of a large building of Spanish Islamic architecture of the era of the Taifas (independent kingdoms).

After the capture of Zaragoza in 1118 by Alfonso I of Aragon, the Aljaferia became the residence of the Christian kings of the Kingdom of Aragon and as such was converted into the focal point for spread of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon. It was the birthplace of Saint Isabel of Portugal in the year 1271. It was used as the royal residence by Peter IV of Aragon and subsequently, on the principal building site, a renovation was carried out that converted these chambers into the palace of the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. In 1593, the structure experienced another renovation that converted it into a military base, first according to Renaissance designs (which today can be observed in its moat and gardens) and later as military quarters. The building suffered continuous alterations and considerable imperfections, above all with the Siege of Zaragoza during the Peninsular War until it was finally restored in the second half of the 20th century and currently it houses the Cortes or autonomous community legislative assembly of Aragon.

In the original construction, extra ramparts were made in the open field surrounding the Aljaferia. With urban expansion over the years, the building has remained inside of the city. Yet the city of Zaragoza has not been able to honor the landscaped surroundings of the Aljaferia. A freeway passes only a few meters away.

my camera charger was lost 2 weeks ago ): and still, i havent got myself a new charger, so...im counted as camera-less now. i miss shooting with my cameraaaaa! friend's birthday party, dinner with family etc, i really wish i have my camera with me so that i can capture the beauty of those happy moments! perhaps i'll ask my friend to help me to buy a new charger ): it costs RM150. eew.

have started our weekly motto again!!! and too bad, i cannot do for this Sunday's topic, which was chosen by me - 'dream'. i'll catch up soon, i promise :) you have no idea how much i miss editing with photoshop - the manipulations. im pretty sure my photoshop skill is dying. :O

btw, my Flickr Pro Account is going to expire on 11 of May. 2 more days. i can still remember how excited and happy i was when i first received the surprise by Riz. not much people liked my photos that time, she was the one who encouraged me a lot! and that was the first time i feel the love and support from people you dont even know in real, by flickr! i loveeeee flickr, really! :) but listen, i dont think i need another flickr pro account, as you can see, i dont upload a lot of photos in a month, so a normal account is enough for me, im sure! :)

aww, i think i have too much to tell you guys!

lately i've just created a Facebook FanPage as well! :) because there are a lot of people who added my personal facebook lately are the ones who like my work, not the ones who know me in real. so... yeah. this is the page where we can talk about photography, or share something with me! I've uploaded some "Befores/Afters" there, im pretty sure some of them will get your jaw dropped :p

have fun :)

Genus:LasiommataWestwood, 1841

Subgenus:

Species:megera(Linnaeus, 1767)

Introduction

The Wall gets its name from the characteristic behaviour of resting with wings two-thirds open on any bare surface, including bare ground and, of course, walls! Many people will have come across this butterfly on footpaths, especially in coastal areas, where the butterfly flies up when disturbed, before setting again a few metres ahead.

The basking behaviour of this butterfly allows it to benefit from the full warmth of the sun whose rays shine directly on the butterfly, but also get reflected back onto the butterfly from whichever surface it is resting on. This habit allows the butterfly to raise its body temperature sufficiently high for it to fly. In particularly hot weather, however, such basking is avoided and the butterfly may even retreat to a suitably-shaded spot to avoid overheating.

This species was once found throughout England, Wales, Ireland and parts of Scotland. Today, however, is a very different picture, with this species suffering severe declines over the last several decades. It is now confined to primarily-coastal regions and has been lost from many sites in central, eastern and south-east England. In Scotland it is confined to coastal areas in the south-west of the country. It is also found on the Isle of Man and Channel Islands. This butterfly is found in relatively small colonies that are self-contained although some individuals will wander, allowing the species to quickly colonise suitable nearby sites.

Taxonomy Notes

Ball (1914) uses the name f. filipluma to describe specimens of the summer generation, differentiated by their scale formation.

Verity (1911a) uses the name ssp. caledonia to describe the race from Scotland which, he says, differ in the width and intensity of the black markings and very broad marginal band. The base of the hindwing being entirely blackened.

Lasiommata megera

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1767) as shown here (type locality: Austria and Denmark).

Conservation Status

There has been a severe and worrying decline of inland populations, with most remaining populations now being found in coastal areas. This species is therefore a priority for conservation efforts.

Habitat

This species is now found primarily in coastal areas, especially unimproved grassland, wasteland, cliff edges and hedgerows.

The first generation of adults emerge in early May, peaking at the end of May and early June, or a little later in the north of England and Scotland. They give rise to a second brood that emerges at the end of July, or mid-August further north. There are 2 generations each year and, on occasion, a small 3rd generation may appear in October.

Imago

The male of this species is territorial and will inhabit a particular area, such as a path, hedgerow or roadside verge, waiting for a passing female. Males will typically perch in a favoured position but will, in sunny and warm conditions, adopt a strategy of patrolling in order to find a mate. All passing insects are investigated and rival males will fly high into the air before coming back to the ground a few seconds later.

The female is much more sedentary and the less-conspicuous of the two sexes. After a brief courtship a pair will mate before disappearing into surrounding vegetation. Both sexes are avid nectar feeders and will feed from any available flower.

Adults feed primarily on Daisy (Bellis perennis), Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica), Hawkweeds (Hieracium/Hypochoeris), Knapweeds (Centaurea spp.), Marjoram (Origanum vulgare), Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi), Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea), Thistles (Cirsium spp. and Carduus spp.), Water Mint (Mentha aquatica) and Yarrow (Achillea millefolium).

Ovum

The spherical eggs are laid singly, or occasionally in twos and threes, in various positions, including the leaves of the foodplant, exposed roots and nearby vegetation. Eggs are pale green when first laid, becoming more translucent as the larva develops within. Sites for egg-laying are typically sheltered and warm compared to their surroundings, and include grass clumps, rabbit scrapes and hoof prints from cattle. This stage lasts around 10 days.

Larva

After emerging, the young larva typically eats its eggshell before feeding on the leaves of the foodplant. Larvae become more mobile as they mature and will move from plant to plant as needed. Larvae typically feed at night, but occasionally feed during the day. This stage lasts around 4 weeks for those larvae that do not overwinter, and there are 3 moults in total.

The primary larval foodplants are Bents (various) (Agrostis spp.), Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum), Tor-grass (Brachypodium pinnatum), Wavy Hair-grass (Deschampsia flexuosa) and Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus).

Pupa

The green pupa is formed head down, attached by the cremaster to the foodplant or nearby vegetation and is extremely well camouflaged. This stage lasts around 2 weeks.

Let's face it. Life is actually like that sometimes. There are times when you really want - you really need - someone to walk with you, and there's no one there. Either they won't or they can't. Sometimes people who care about us would like to walk with us through what we're going through, but they just can't; they don't understand, they don't know how to help, they're too busy with their own issues, or they're just not there for any one of a hundred reasons. Maybe as you're listening today, you're just tired of walking alone.

What I'm about to say may sound too good to be true, but I wouldn't offer you false hope. You don't ever have to walk alone again. The reason that is not just a hollow hope is because it doesn't depend on the love of some human who may be there or may not be. It depends on the love of the God who made you - who is always there.

Listen to the ironclad promise of Jesus Christ in Hebrews 13:5. It's our word for today from the Word of God. "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." He says never. He's offering you a "never leave you" love. Some of Jesus' last words on earth to those who belong to Him are these: "Surely I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20). After listing every conceivable force on earth, or in heaven, or in hell that might take His love away, Romans 8:39says: "Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

But He loves you so much He wasn't willing to lose you, so He sent Jesus. That's His one and only Son, and He sent Him to die for the sin that separates you from Him. So He could forgive you, so you could live in His love, so you could be in heaven with Him forever. And now that love is working inside your heart, drawing you His direction. This can't be a one-way love. You have to open up to what He died to give you, by telling Him that you're placing the rest of your life in His hands; hands that bear eternal evidence of His love for you. You can tell when you see the print of the nails there.

With Jesus in your life, will you ever feel lonely again? Sure you will. There'll be lonely times, but you'll never be alone again. You have His word on it.

The Green Crested Lizard is 550mm in length, with a long hanging tail making up four fifths of its length. It has a jagged crest on its neck which more closely resemble hairs, as opposed to the crest of its close relative, B. cristatella, which more closely resembles the points on a crown. The crest consists of elongated scales, although it is flabby like skin.

Family:NymphalidaeRafinesque, 1815

Subfamily:HeliconiinaeSwainson, 1827

Tribe:ArgynniniSwainson, 1833

Genus:ArgynnisFabricius, 1807

Subgenus:MesoacidaliaReuss, 1926

Species:aglaja(Linnaeus, 1758)

The Dark Green Fritillary is the most widespread fritillary found in the British Isles and is a pleasure to see as it flies powerfully over its grassland habitats, frequently stopping to nectar on Thistles and Knapweed. It gets its name from the green hue found on the underside of the hindwings, which are peppered with large silver spots. This butterfly can be found throughout the British Isles, although it is less common in central and eastern England. Outside of central Scotland and southern England, it is most frequently found in coastal areas and is the only fritillary found in Orkney and the Outer Hebrides. Despite its powerful flight, it is somewhat surprising that this species is not particularly mobile, staying within its breeding grounds.

Taxonomy Notes

Historically, several authorities have referred to f. scotica, defined in Watkins (1923), that is not recognised in current taxonomy. This form differs from the nominate form in that individuals are larger in size have much heavier black markings on both upper and undersides, especially in the female, and the underside has a darker green flush, with more prominent silver spots on both fore and hindwings. Different authorities described different distributions of scotica. Dennis (1977) says "The most extreme development of the morph is found in the Outer Hebrides, especially on Pabbay (Barra group), south Rona, north Raasay and on Orkney. Subspecies scotica has also been described by Heslop-Harrison for Scalpay, Soay, Rhum, Eigg, Canna and Coll, but everywhere in addition to specimens showing extreme development, others transitional to aglaia are found". The most recent analysis is given in Thomson (1980). Riley (2007) suggests that this form is found in Scotland (apart from southern localities), Ireland (where it is the only form found) and the Isle of Man. However, Riley's inclusion of Ireland is questioned by Nash (2012) who assigns all Irish specimens to ssp. aglaja. Thomson (1980), Emmet (1990), Riley (2007) and Nash (2012) elevate the aglaja forms to subspecific status. The counties where scotica was thought to be found, as mentioned by Thomson (1980), are shaded green in the image below.

Argynnis aglaja

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1758) as shown here (type locality: Sweden).

The nominate form is found throughout its range in the British Isles.

Conservation Status

Although this species has declined considerably since the 1970s, especially in eastern England, the butterfly remains our most widespread fritillary and is not considered a priority species for conservation efforts.

Habitat

The characteristic habitat of this butterfly is open, windswept calcareous grassland. However, in some areas it can also be found in woodland clearings and coastal dunes.

Life Cycle

Adults generally emerge in the middle of June, reaching a peak in early July. In northern Scotland, adults emerge a little later at the end of June, reaching a peak at the end of July and early August. There is one generation each year.

Imago

Both sexes are avid nectar feeders and typically feed in early morning or late afternoon, when they will constantly fly from flower head to flower head staying at each flower for only a few seconds. This behaviour makes them very difficult to observe and it is sometimes easier to find a favourite flower and wait for a butterfly to come to you!

The males are the more conspicuous of the two sexes, and can be seen patrolling over large areas of habitat looking for a virgin female which often rest low down in vegetation. Once found, mating takes place almost immediately. A mating pair may be found resting on vegetation and will even continue to nectar while coupled.

Females are somewhat-easier to see when egg-laying, where they intersperse periods of nectaring with basking and bouts of egg-laying, when they will crawl deep in vegetation, searching out the lushest growths of larval foodplant before laying a single egg, although several eggs are often laid in the same area.

Ovum

Eggs are laid either directly on the foodplant, or on a suitable platform nearby, such as a twig, grass stem or dead leaf. Eggs are yellow when first laid but turn a dark purple after a few days and, eventually, a dark grey just before the larva emerges. This stage lasts between 2 and 3 weeks.

Larva

The larva eats the eggshell on hatching and immediately enters hibernation in a curled up leaf or other piece of debris. The larva emerges in the spring and starts to feed on the tenderest new growth of the foodplant, either eating large chunks out of the leaf lobes, or eating the leaf entirely with the stem left standing. The larva is most active during sunny periods and can often be seen wandering across bare ground or short turf in search of the foodplant. The mature larva has a distinct colouring, being mostly black with a feint yellow band running down its back and a series of red spots running down each side. There are 5 moults in total.

The primary larval foodplants are Common Dog-violet (Viola riviniana), Hairy Violet (Viola hirta) and Marsh Violet (Viola palustris).

Pupa

The larva creates a loose tent by drawing together several leaves and other pieces of vegetation together. The pupa is formed upside down, secured to the top of the tent by the cremaster. This stages lasts between 3 and 4 weeks, depending on the weather.

So this started as a joke shot that was way over-exposed for me to consider using originally. Once I started playing with color trying to save it, I ended up really liking it.

The sun was perfectly inline and almost setting down the stream. One of the members joked about them all getting in the water for the last photo and everyone called his bluff. You shouldn't be doing that in November in Ohio.
