Sadly due to the state of California's budget the lighting of the original Fresnel lens on the 135th anniversary was canceled for 2009. Hopefully it will return in 2010. This is one of the more spectacular sites you will see. The starburst pattern is natural as the lighthouse puts out 24 beams of light in all directions at once. This image was taken at the 2008 lighting on a crystal clear night. I also have pictures taken during foggy nights. Both are spectacular. The lighthouse sits about 40 miles south of San Francisco and 20 miles north of Santa Cruz on California's famous Highway One. The lighthouse is in a serious need of repair. A 200lb chunk of the lighthouse fell off the western side closing the structure to the public. A chain link fence was erected around the lighthouse making photography of this stunning structure difficult. Even so, it's by far the most impressive of California's lighthouses.
I recently reprocessed this photo using new software and the result was much improved. It has been reposted to some groups as a result.

___
Often, when dealing with environmental issues, the focus is solely on the animal species or ecosystems at risk of extinction, but we left on the sidelines or pay less attention to trees that are the foundation of ecosystems and play a key role in nature.
Some of the most typical trees of the Earth are also some who are at greater risk of extinction. It is worth sounding the alarm and support conservation efforts.

This is the intersection of the spillway with the Mississippi River. The spillway was opened this year due to the very high river levels to keep from flooding the New Orleans area,. Up river the Morgnza Spillway was also opened to relieve flooding of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. If they had not opened both spillways these cities and other nearby areas would have had massive flooding!!!! The Bonnet Carre' Spillway is now closed and mostly drained but the lower road has been damaged and repairs will soon be made. The Morganza Spillway was closed a few weeks ago.
It seems fairy lights give you a very unusual facial structure, all the photos looked so funny. I had to run outside at 11.30 when I got home after realizing the photos I'd initially taken hadn't worked out, sorry it's a rush job :( I seemed to spend the entire day sleeping, or streaming tv, it's been one of those miserable days when you don't feel like dealing with anything and sit round eating vast amounts of chocolate instead :P I've now run out of House, NCIS, Castle & How I Met Your Mother - it's traumatic! I have nothing left to watch, any suggestions of good stuff are very welcome.
Inspired by anyone with a love of fairy lights :)

It is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae. Members of the genus are known as buttercups, spearworts and water crowfoots. The familiar and widespread buttercup of gardens throughout Northern Europe (and introduced elsewhere) is the creeping buttercup Ranunculus repens, which has extremely tough and tenacious roots. Two other species are also widespread, the bulbous buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus and the much taller meadow buttercup Ranunculus acris. All three are often regarded as invasive weeds. Buttercups usually flower in the spring, but flowers may be found throughout the summer, especially where the plants are growing as opportunistic colonizers, as in the case of garden weeds. The water crowfoots (Ranunculus subgenus Batrachium), which grow in still or running water, are sometimes treated in a separate genus Batrachium. They have two different leaf types, thread-like leaves underwater and broader floating leaves. In some species, such as R. aquatilis, a third, intermediate leaf type occurs. Ranunculus species are used as food by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the Hebrew character and small angle shades. Some species are popular ornamental flowers in horticulture, with many cultivars selected for large and brightly coloured flowers. Buttercups are mostly perennial, but occasionally annual or biennial, herbaceous, aquatic or terrestrial plants, often with leaves in a rosette at the base of the stem. In many perennial species runners are sent out that will develop new plants with roots and rosettes at the distanced nodes. 24799
One of the first butterflies to become a common sight in the spring, the Pipevine Swallowtail's black wings are easy to identify. California Dutchman's pipe (Pipevine) is this butterfly's host plant. Substances that are consumed from the host plant make it distasteful to predators. For that reason, their coloration and flight are mimicked by other butterflies.
For the first round of this year’s RogueOlympics over on RogueBricks I decided to build a little love letter to late nights and captivating books, a combination I would often be consumed by when I was younger. I hope you like it!
The RogueOlympics require you to stick to 101 elements or less so this little scene was built with a total of 92 bricks. It’s always great fun to work around those restrictions as it’s so different from most other contests, so of course I had to join.
Feel free to join this ongoing contest yourself! You can join each week for a different theme that needs to be built with 101 elements or less.
Thanks to Isaac for some help with the title!
A new series following Another Day in Capital City. I rarely go to London these days, but this is my third visit with camera in hand during the past 12 months… and the atmosphere, the city noise, the r-u-s-h hits me like a tidal wave every time.
I seem to be finding myself inexorably drawn towards the potentially darker images in this series, at the moment!
I don't really need to say much here. It was snowing most of the day and while being agitatedly watched by his partner, this swan decided to go on a walkabout on the frozen lake.
Now, those that know me will know that I am not in the habit of blowing my own trumpet, but I am so delighted with the fact that I have had a photograph of Loch Ard published in Outdoor Photography magazine, that I wanted to let you know that this would not have been possible without the support of my flickr friends and contacts who have supported, critiqued and given me the confidence to believe that I could have got to this stage, so to all you guys and lasses out their who are just starting or trying to improve all the aspects of this wonderful art, my message is , dont give up... I didnt know one end of a digital SLR from the other three years ago, but I asked hundreds of questions of my friend on flickr and learned that they are only too willing to help and encourage... So this is for them!!.... many thanks!!

This is Fluorite from Dal'negorsk (Дальнегорск), Russia at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show.
www.mindat.org/locentries.php?p=2635&m=1576
A famous mining region centered on the city of Dalnegorsk in eastern Russia, 300 km northeast of Vladivostok. The name "Tetyukhe" or "Tetjuche" (meaning "valley of the wild pigs") is the old Chinese name for Dalnegorsk and can be encountered on a few old mineral labels.
The Verkhnee deposit was first developed in 1912. Boron mineralization was prospected in 1945.
The region comprises 9 different deposits.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorite
"Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It belongs to the halide minerals. It crystallizes in isometric cubic habit, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon.
Pure fluorite is colourless and transparent, both in visible and ultraviolet light, but impurities usually make it a colorful mineral and the stone has ornamental and lapidary uses. Industrially, fluorite is used as a flux for smelting, and in the production of certain glasses and enamels. The purest grades of fluorite are a source of fluoride for hydrofluoric acid manufacture, which is the intermediate source of most fluorine-containing fine chemicals. Optically clear transparent fluorite has anomalous partial dispersion, that is, its refractive index varies with the wavelength of light in a manner that differs from that of commonly used glasses, so fluorite is useful in making apochromatic lenses, and particularly valuable in photographic optics. Fluorite optics are also usable in the far-ultraviolet and mid-infrared ranges, where conventional glasses are too opaque for use. Fluorite also has low dispersion, and a high refractive index for its density."

Over the Rainbow on Black (much better and easier to see)
I decided to make my first post back one of my favorites from our recent trip to Brazil. Iguazu Falls was a true highlight of the trip. I have many shots from the Falls to process, and no matter how many I post, they won't do this place justice. The vastness of this location, with the 275+ falls ranging from small streams to true mammoths, is just amazing.
I had never witnessed a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow) before. While it was a little faint to the eye, you could still make it out pretty clearly, and the 30 second exposure helped to bring it out that much more. I decided not to over-process the shot and brighten and saturate things beyond the true scene. I'm not sure there was ever much risk, but I did enjoy the part about having to keep an eye out for jaguars when walking around the park at night.
I look forward to going through the numerous memory cards' worth of shots. We saw a lot of great sites in Brazil, but as is always the case, it's good to be back home. This was another trip that makes one reflect on how lucky we are here in the U.S.
I look forward to catching up with everyone's streams.
Thanks for looking!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lost along the road.
Dismay everything around his own world, everything is lost, everything seems not to be to the really place, you wake up the morning, mindful of a dream, but that it is not a dream...
A nightmare...
You take later immediately conscience Of it, but you don't remember yourself the why of this whole nervousness, as if from ghost, anymore them I was not, or better, the world is not your anymore, who knows where you are, who knows thing you are...
Everything seems yourself so unreal, everything it slips you from the hands, everything it becomes difficult to manage, but what worries yourself is to understand, if it is the reality...
Or the memory of the sleep...

Been sick since Tuesday and I have been missing taking my morning walks and capturing sunrise moments. So I rummaged through my archive to look for one I captured a while back. This one should keep me on the hold until I can get back to my morning routine.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, EVERYONE! I will try to catch up with your streams as soon as I can. Many, many thanks to all of you who have sent me get-well wishes and e-cards and virtual bouquet of flowers, and caring words. You know who you are. Here's a favortie song for you all (Video will open in a new window):
My last shot is ending up to be the most popular in my short time here on Flickr, so yesterday afternoon I ventured out to the same spot in Brisbane’s bayside in search of some cloudy reflections .
Nature unfortunately didn’t play the game, and not a single puffy cloud was in sight :<
The sun had just set and I turned around to see this beautiful layer of colors in the sky and the moon begging for some attention!!!
This spot was given to me by Kane, check out his stream, it’s impressive!

In the photo tour in Cantabria the weather was definitely not on my side, especially in Noja where I had little chance to photograph because of the omnipresent rain.
However, a couple of days later it went well; here's the first shot of the beautiful Tengradin di Noja Beach.

The Aljafería Palace (Arabic:قصر الجعفرية Qasr Aljafariya, Spanish: Palacio de la Aljafería) is a fortified medieval Islamic palace built during the second half of the 11th century in the Moorish taifa of Zaragoza of Al-Andalus, present day Zaragoza, Spain. It was the residence of the Banu Hud dynasty during the era of Abu Jaffar Al-Muqtadir after abolishing Banu Tujibi of Kindah dynasty. the palace reflects the splendor attained by the kingdom of the taifa of Zaragoza at the height of its grandeur. The palace currently contains the Cortes (regional parliament) of the autonomous community of Aragon.
The structure holds unique importance in that it is the only conserved testimony of a large building of Spanish Islamic architecture of the era of the Taifas (independent kingdoms).
After the capture of Zaragoza in 1118 by Alfonso I of Aragon, the Aljaferia became the residence of the Christian kings of the Kingdom of Aragon and as such was converted into the focal point for spread of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon. It was the birthplace of Saint Isabel of Portugal in the year 1271. It was used as the royal residence by Peter IV of Aragon and subsequently, on the principal building site, a renovation was carried out that converted these chambers into the palace of the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. In 1593, the structure experienced another renovation that converted it into a military base, first according to Renaissance designs (which today can be observed in its moat and gardens) and later as military quarters. The building suffered continuous alterations and considerable imperfections, above all with the Siege of Zaragoza during the Peninsular War until it was finally restored in the second half of the 20th century and currently it houses the Cortes or autonomous community legislative assembly of Aragon.
In the original construction, extra ramparts were made in the open field surrounding the Aljaferia. With urban expansion over the years, the building has remained inside of the city. Yet the city of Zaragoza has not been able to honor the landscaped surroundings of the Aljaferia. A freeway passes only a few meters away.
This is my fifth entry for the Colossal Castle Contest XVI. I always enjoy building microscale castle scenes, so I certainly wasn’t going to pass up the Micro Medieval Mountain category, even if the prize wasn’t very desirable for me…
The micro ship design was inspired by Henjin Quilones.
The fortress of Calbridge is built right into the Fjall mountains and its mighty walls protect the harbor and village along the coast.

Species:megera(Linnaeus, 1767)
Introduction
The Wall gets its name from the characteristic behaviour of resting with wings two-thirds open on any bare surface, including bare ground and, of course, walls! Many people will have come across this butterfly on footpaths, especially in coastal areas, where the butterfly flies up when disturbed, before setting again a few metres ahead.
The basking behaviour of this butterfly allows it to benefit from the full warmth of the sun whose rays shine directly on the butterfly, but also get reflected back onto the butterfly from whichever surface it is resting on. This habit allows the butterfly to raise its body temperature sufficiently high for it to fly. In particularly hot weather, however, such basking is avoided and the butterfly may even retreat to a suitably-shaded spot to avoid overheating.
This species was once found throughout England, Wales, Ireland and parts of Scotland. Today, however, is a very different picture, with this species suffering severe declines over the last several decades. It is now confined to primarily-coastal regions and has been lost from many sites in central, eastern and south-east England. In Scotland it is confined to coastal areas in the south-west of the country. It is also found on the Isle of Man and Channel Islands. This butterfly is found in relatively small colonies that are self-contained although some individuals will wander, allowing the species to quickly colonise suitable nearby sites.
Taxonomy Notes
Ball (1914) uses the name f. filipluma to describe specimens of the summer generation, differentiated by their scale formation.
Verity (1911a) uses the name ssp. caledonia to describe the race from Scotland which, he says, differ in the width and intensity of the black markings and very broad marginal band. The base of the hindwing being entirely blackened.
Lasiommata megera
This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1767) as shown here (type locality: Austria and Denmark).
Conservation Status
There has been a severe and worrying decline of inland populations, with most remaining populations now being found in coastal areas. This species is therefore a priority for conservation efforts.
Habitat
This species is now found primarily in coastal areas, especially unimproved grassland, wasteland, cliff edges and hedgerows.
The first generation of adults emerge in early May, peaking at the end of May and early June, or a little later in the north of England and Scotland. They give rise to a second brood that emerges at the end of July, or mid-August further north. There are 2 generations each year and, on occasion, a small 3rd generation may appear in October.
Imago
The male of this species is territorial and will inhabit a particular area, such as a path, hedgerow or roadside verge, waiting for a passing female. Males will typically perch in a favoured position but will, in sunny and warm conditions, adopt a strategy of patrolling in order to find a mate. All passing insects are investigated and rival males will fly high into the air before coming back to the ground a few seconds later.
The female is much more sedentary and the less-conspicuous of the two sexes. After a brief courtship a pair will mate before disappearing into surrounding vegetation. Both sexes are avid nectar feeders and will feed from any available flower.
Adults feed primarily on Daisy (Bellis perennis), Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica), Hawkweeds (Hieracium/Hypochoeris), Knapweeds (Centaurea spp.), Marjoram (Origanum vulgare), Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi), Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea), Thistles (Cirsium spp. and Carduus spp.), Water Mint (Mentha aquatica) and Yarrow (Achillea millefolium).
Ovum
The spherical eggs are laid singly, or occasionally in twos and threes, in various positions, including the leaves of the foodplant, exposed roots and nearby vegetation. Eggs are pale green when first laid, becoming more translucent as the larva develops within. Sites for egg-laying are typically sheltered and warm compared to their surroundings, and include grass clumps, rabbit scrapes and hoof prints from cattle. This stage lasts around 10 days.
Larva
After emerging, the young larva typically eats its eggshell before feeding on the leaves of the foodplant. Larvae become more mobile as they mature and will move from plant to plant as needed. Larvae typically feed at night, but occasionally feed during the day. This stage lasts around 4 weeks for those larvae that do not overwinter, and there are 3 moults in total.
The primary larval foodplants are Bents (various) (Agrostis spp.), Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum), Tor-grass (Brachypodium pinnatum), Wavy Hair-grass (Deschampsia flexuosa) and Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus).
Pupa
The green pupa is formed head down, attached by the cremaster to the foodplant or nearby vegetation and is extremely well camouflaged. This stage lasts around 2 weeks.
