Olivers Hill is located in the City of Frankston, Victoria in Australia. It is the first major rise in terrain along the eastern coastline of Port Phillip, between Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. It was named after local Frankston fisherman, James Oliver, who built the first cottage atop the hill in the mid-19th century, from where he kept watch for fish in the waters below - Wikipedia

If you've read anything at all about Angkor Wat, you'll probably know at least three things: Angkor is one of the most beautiful and suggestive place on the planet, the Angkor Wat Temples area is much bigger than the Angkor Temple alone, and last, nothing is homogeneous, being the temples built in different times, during a four centuries process.

Many people, when they hear the name Angkor in a conversation, they ask: "Angkor What?". Angkor Wat is one of the most beautiful and fascinating places on the planet. Made by the Khmer kings in a process that lasts almost 4 centuries, this magnificent area has been abandoned and hidden by the forest. Re-discovered by a french man about 150 years ago, Angkor Wat is ready to become one of the most visited archaeological and artistic site on the planet.

Entry Island (Île-d’Entrée in French) is an island off the east coast of the Magdalen Islands, which are part of the Canadian Province of Quebec. The island is 2 km wide and 3 km long. The island is located 12 km from the main port of Cap-aux-Meules of the Magdalen Islands. Entry Island is only accessible by the sea. Fishing is the main industry of the island with the lobster fishery being the most important, but some fishermen also harvest crab, scallops, whelk, mackerel, tuna and herring.

Visible as the first island when travelling by ferry from the Magdalen Islands, Entry Island can be identified by its lavishly tinted cliffs, the highest of which rises a sheer 559 feet (170.4 m) from the sea, and is the highest point of land in the archipelago. Fewer than 130 residents of Scottish and English origin inhabit this unique island. The island has two stores, a restaurant, an Anglican church, school, CLSC, museum, and post office; a Bed and Breakfast operates during the tourist season. (Wikipédia)

Where: Sweden, Östergötland, Norrköping google maps

When: 20110121

How and why: Remake of an old image. Improved the composition a bit and had better light (been there a few times to look for it! And the sun disappeared five minutes later). Just love the old red brick industry and the power of the water fall.

Editing: HDR tone mapped and some added contrast adjustments, desaturared a bit.

I leave for three weeks tomorrow! (I think I've told you many times but just to reiterate: I'm going to Hong Kong and the Philipppines!) :D Oh how I look forward to dive - I've never tried that before!!

Have a nice summer time everybody. I'll be looking forward to seeing your work when I get back :) - and I promise that I'll take very many shots with me back from Asia.

See you!

The Rice Fields of Longsheng are about a two hour drive from the Chinese city of Giulin (Li River fame). This was taken from one of the many lookouts in the mountainside village of Ping'an. Although we didn't have the best of weather the rain did stop long enough for a few nice photo opportunities, like this one.

www.mindat.org/locentries.php?p=2635&m=1576

www.mindat.org/loc-2635.html

A famous mining region centered on the city of Dalnegorsk in eastern Russia, 300 km northeast of Vladivostok. The name "Tetyukhe" or "Tetjuche" (meaning "valley of the wild pigs") is the old Chinese name for Dalnegorsk and can be encountered on a few old mineral labels.

The Verkhnee deposit was first developed in 1912. Boron mineralization was prospected in 1945.

The region comprises 9 different deposits.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorite

"Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It belongs to the halide minerals. It crystallizes in isometric cubic habit, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon.

Pure fluorite is colourless and transparent, both in visible and ultraviolet light, but impurities usually make it a colorful mineral and the stone has ornamental and lapidary uses. Industrially, fluorite is used as a flux for smelting, and in the production of certain glasses and enamels. The purest grades of fluorite are a source of fluoride for hydrofluoric acid manufacture, which is the intermediate source of most fluorine-containing fine chemicals. Optically clear transparent fluorite has anomalous partial dispersion, that is, its refractive index varies with the wavelength of light in a manner that differs from that of commonly used glasses, so fluorite is useful in making apochromatic lenses, and particularly valuable in photographic optics. Fluorite optics are also usable in the far-ultraviolet and mid-infrared ranges, where conventional glasses are too opaque for use. Fluorite also has low dispersion, and a high refractive index for its density."

The Meaning of the

Candy Cane

The fascinating story behind the candy cane ...

The birth, ministry, and death of

Jesus Christ are signified through

the elements of the candy cane ~

JESUS CHRIST is ....

our Good Shepherd (staff shape) ~ 1 Pt. 5:4

our Rock (hard candy) ~ 1 Cor. 10:4

our Sinless Savior (white) ~ 2 Cor. 5:21

our Sacrifical Lamb (red) ~ Eph. 1:7

The STRIPES symbolize pain inflicted upon

Jesus before his death on the cross and a bold

stripe to represent the blood he shed for

mankind. The three stripes can also represent

the power and presence of the Trinity

(the Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

The smell and taste of PEPPERMINT relate

to the herb hyssop. Psalm 51:7 states,

"Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean,

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."

The candy cane is meant to be shared --

broken into pieces for all to share. That

reminds us of Jesus' words, "This is my body

which is broken for you" (1 Cor. 11:24).

What a sweet way to share the Gospel !

And you just thought it was good candy :-)

Peacock bass is the common name in English for several species of tropical, freshwater fish of the genus Cichla native to the Amazon River basin of South America. These tropical fish are not true basses, but are rather cichlids. They also inhabit the waters of Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Panama, Singapore and parts of the USA (Guam, Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the United States Virgin Islands).

Sport fishermen have made these cichlids prized game fish for their fighting qualities, so much so that many travel agencies now arrange fishing trips to Brazil and Florida specifically to catch peacock bass.

Renowned American peacock bass fisherman and fishing author, Larry Larsen, refers to them as "freshwater bullies" due to their ferocious nature when hunting and their tendency to damage and sometimes destroy fishing gear when striking. Also, the most common techniques for catching them are similar to those for catching largemouth bass with the notable exception that peacock bass usually won't strike artificial worms -- a widely used lure among largemouth bass fisherman. In addition, fly fishing techniques, including lures such as poppers and large streamers, are becoming increasingly popular for catching these cichlids.

Despite their popularity among anglers, some naturalists have identified peacock bass as potential pests for causing ecological imbalances in some of their introduced areas.

An egret at the Lafitte Nature Study Park, Lafitte, Louisiana. Several egrets are nesting in the back of the park in the cypress trees. The trees are full of spanish moss, hanging much like curtains! This bird is a female and she rules this nest! When the male brings a stick she takes the stick and puts it in the nest then hits him with her bill so he will leave and get another! Then she stands there and continues to display until he returns! Hmmm...she thinks like she is human! :-)

On a Tuesday, we went to Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and this is one of the things I thought was really kewl - a vintage Royal typewriter. I like the design of it. Really antique-e.

We walked around and checked out some of the old country singer and their memorabilia. I'm not really big into country.

Our trip went well especially with a little puppy on board. We went to TN to visit granny for a few days. Helped her out with whatever she needed. I actually painted her bench. Cleaned up her patio also. Nothing big. It was great to help her since she couldn't move around much. She had history of couple strokes. So it's tough for her and it was nice to be there for her.

Besides chillin' at granny's, we went to this museum and then later to Grand Ole Opry! I will be posting some pics here later. We had fun! We actually stop at Sonic everyday to get the Route 44 strawberry limeade and few of their chiller drinks. I wasn't the best healthy eater on that trip.. My lunch and dinner consist of burgers, fried chicken, pulled pork, and Shoney's buffet. Pecan pie with vanilla ice cream! Wow, being in the South - who cares about the nutrition label. As long as it tasted good - eat it. So yeah, me and Brian did likewise.

I've had enough of Shoney's. Although we only went twice but that was enough. Granny loves going there. She loves their salad. The first time she took us there, my fish wasn't cooked thoroughly. That wasn't good. Hey, it only cost $4.99 per person!

********************************************************************************************

Glad today was over with. Was busy at work but not crazy. My co-worker told me that Sarah Jessica Parker died on the set filming her show. We were like. "Really!" "How?"

[April fools!]

It was random but sounded realistic. I told few people about it and they all believed me. Lol.

Now I'm home alone while everyone left to go to Maine tonight til tomorrow night. It was so nice out today and it is supposed to be nicer tomorrow and the weekend. Wish I could have gone with them to ME but couldn't get off tomorrow because I got 2 SEs (Stress Echos) that no one else can do. So I have to be stuck inside the hospital while everybody else is at the beach. [Boo]

It's good that there is Flickr. I can share my feelings and let it out a bit.

Post a pic.

Put my comments.

And I feel better after.

Wow, this is my longest post. That's cuz I actually get to sit down and type. What a peaceful and quite evening. Just me and DJ (cat). [No Phoebe]. I can actually sleep through the night and not have to take the dog out at 3am to go potty.

A foehn wind or föhn wind

is a type of dry down-slope wind which occurs in the lee of a mountain range.

It is a rain shadow wind which results from the subsequent adiabatic warming of air which has dropped most of its moisture on windward slopes .

As a consequence of the different adiabatic lapse rates of moist and dry air, the air on the leeward slopes becomes warmer than equivalent elevations on the windward slopes.

Föhn winds can raise temperatures by as much as 30°C (54°F) in just a matter of hours.

Central Europe enjoys a warmer climate due to the Föhn.

Over the Rainbow on Black (much better and easier to see)

I decided to make my first post back one of my favorites from our recent trip to Brazil. Iguazu Falls was a true highlight of the trip. I have many shots from the Falls to process, and no matter how many I post, they won't do this place justice. The vastness of this location, with the 275+ falls ranging from small streams to true mammoths, is just amazing.

I had never witnessed a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow) before. While it was a little faint to the eye, you could still make it out pretty clearly, and the 30 second exposure helped to bring it out that much more. I decided not to over-process the shot and brighten and saturate things beyond the true scene. I'm not sure there was ever much risk, but I did enjoy the part about having to keep an eye out for jaguars when walking around the park at night.

I look forward to going through the numerous memory cards' worth of shots. We saw a lot of great sites in Brazil, but as is always the case, it's good to be back home. This was another trip that makes one reflect on how lucky we are here in the U.S.

I look forward to catching up with everyone's streams.

"I could stay there for a lifetime"

Better days with brighter sunshines are coming. Everyone's "Woohoo !" !

- This title also tries to make a comparison between the ephemeral poppies, and our human condition, which is ephemeral as well, but in another way(s)... -

This afternoon, i came back home earlier than usual. After two fruitless hours in front off my tv, i decided to look out the window.

The weather was cloudy and we almost couldn't see the sun. I had to wait before going outside with my camera.

And there was not much to do inside. Actually i didn't really check out what i could do because i wanted to breathe some refreshing and sunny air, and maybe to take some pictures as well...

But i hoped this was not going to last long.

Twenty minutes later, without asking myself more questions, i opened the door and jumped outside.

Sometimes you easily become aware of things, habits you'd always like to live with... Your will can change everything without a lot of efforts.

I decided to ride my bike if ever the clouds would have liked to wring themselves.

Though despite that i put rain clothes into my bag, nothing happened.

In fact, i couldn't know that the bad weather that persisted this entire week was going to change into a beautiful and sunny afternoon allowing me to find my smile back.

At that moment of the day, when the sun suddenly appeared from behind the clouds now disapearing, i found a wheat field full of poppies. The first one this year !

I couldn't even dream of it !

The horizon was immense, i couldn't see anything but wheat, and wheat, and poppies... And the sun was wonderfully reflecting on the wheat dancing with the wind... The sun was not so hot on my skin, and sometimes the wind was a little cold. But it was an intense feeling, only the fact of being here, lost in the immensity.

I could stay there for a lifeftime.

I only stayed two hours, or more. I don't know. In fact i don't even remember.

I was feeling alive for the very first time this year :D

The Aljafería Palace (Arabic:قصر الجعفرية Qasr Aljafariya, Spanish: Palacio de la Aljafería) is a fortified medieval Islamic palace built during the second half of the 11th century in the Moorish taifa of Zaragoza of Al-Andalus, present day Zaragoza, Spain. It was the residence of the Banu Hud dynasty during the era of Abu Jaffar Al-Muqtadir after abolishing Banu Tujibi of Kindah dynasty. the palace reflects the splendor attained by the kingdom of the taifa of Zaragoza at the height of its grandeur. The palace currently contains the Cortes (regional parliament) of the autonomous community of Aragon.

The structure holds unique importance in that it is the only conserved testimony of a large building of Spanish Islamic architecture of the era of the Taifas (independent kingdoms).

After the capture of Zaragoza in 1118 by Alfonso I of Aragon, the Aljaferia became the residence of the Christian kings of the Kingdom of Aragon and as such was converted into the focal point for spread of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon. It was the birthplace of Saint Isabel of Portugal in the year 1271. It was used as the royal residence by Peter IV of Aragon and subsequently, on the principal building site, a renovation was carried out that converted these chambers into the palace of the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. In 1593, the structure experienced another renovation that converted it into a military base, first according to Renaissance designs (which today can be observed in its moat and gardens) and later as military quarters. The building suffered continuous alterations and considerable imperfections, above all with the Siege of Zaragoza during the Peninsular War until it was finally restored in the second half of the 20th century and currently it houses the Cortes or autonomous community legislative assembly of Aragon.

In the original construction, extra ramparts were made in the open field surrounding the Aljaferia. With urban expansion over the years, the building has remained inside of the city. Yet the city of Zaragoza has not been able to honor the landscaped surroundings of the Aljaferia. A freeway passes only a few meters away.

I went for a wonderful midnight walk through the streets of my neighbourhood tonight. The air was warm (10C, 50F) and all those mountains of snow were melting and washing out parts of the roadways. So I put my camera down right at the edge of one of the mammoth puddles and captured the sparkle that occurs just when the soul of freshly dead snow emerges to make it's trip to whiter pastures.

Genus:LasiommataWestwood, 1841

Subgenus:

Species:megera(Linnaeus, 1767)

Introduction

The Wall gets its name from the characteristic behaviour of resting with wings two-thirds open on any bare surface, including bare ground and, of course, walls! Many people will have come across this butterfly on footpaths, especially in coastal areas, where the butterfly flies up when disturbed, before setting again a few metres ahead.

The basking behaviour of this butterfly allows it to benefit from the full warmth of the sun whose rays shine directly on the butterfly, but also get reflected back onto the butterfly from whichever surface it is resting on. This habit allows the butterfly to raise its body temperature sufficiently high for it to fly. In particularly hot weather, however, such basking is avoided and the butterfly may even retreat to a suitably-shaded spot to avoid overheating.

This species was once found throughout England, Wales, Ireland and parts of Scotland. Today, however, is a very different picture, with this species suffering severe declines over the last several decades. It is now confined to primarily-coastal regions and has been lost from many sites in central, eastern and south-east England. In Scotland it is confined to coastal areas in the south-west of the country. It is also found on the Isle of Man and Channel Islands. This butterfly is found in relatively small colonies that are self-contained although some individuals will wander, allowing the species to quickly colonise suitable nearby sites.

Taxonomy Notes

Ball (1914) uses the name f. filipluma to describe specimens of the summer generation, differentiated by their scale formation.

Verity (1911a) uses the name ssp. caledonia to describe the race from Scotland which, he says, differ in the width and intensity of the black markings and very broad marginal band. The base of the hindwing being entirely blackened.

Lasiommata megera

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1767) as shown here (type locality: Austria and Denmark).

Conservation Status

There has been a severe and worrying decline of inland populations, with most remaining populations now being found in coastal areas. This species is therefore a priority for conservation efforts.

Habitat

This species is now found primarily in coastal areas, especially unimproved grassland, wasteland, cliff edges and hedgerows.

The first generation of adults emerge in early May, peaking at the end of May and early June, or a little later in the north of England and Scotland. They give rise to a second brood that emerges at the end of July, or mid-August further north. There are 2 generations each year and, on occasion, a small 3rd generation may appear in October.

Imago

The male of this species is territorial and will inhabit a particular area, such as a path, hedgerow or roadside verge, waiting for a passing female. Males will typically perch in a favoured position but will, in sunny and warm conditions, adopt a strategy of patrolling in order to find a mate. All passing insects are investigated and rival males will fly high into the air before coming back to the ground a few seconds later.

The female is much more sedentary and the less-conspicuous of the two sexes. After a brief courtship a pair will mate before disappearing into surrounding vegetation. Both sexes are avid nectar feeders and will feed from any available flower.

Adults feed primarily on Daisy (Bellis perennis), Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica), Hawkweeds (Hieracium/Hypochoeris), Knapweeds (Centaurea spp.), Marjoram (Origanum vulgare), Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi), Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea), Thistles (Cirsium spp. and Carduus spp.), Water Mint (Mentha aquatica) and Yarrow (Achillea millefolium).

Ovum

The spherical eggs are laid singly, or occasionally in twos and threes, in various positions, including the leaves of the foodplant, exposed roots and nearby vegetation. Eggs are pale green when first laid, becoming more translucent as the larva develops within. Sites for egg-laying are typically sheltered and warm compared to their surroundings, and include grass clumps, rabbit scrapes and hoof prints from cattle. This stage lasts around 10 days.

Larva

After emerging, the young larva typically eats its eggshell before feeding on the leaves of the foodplant. Larvae become more mobile as they mature and will move from plant to plant as needed. Larvae typically feed at night, but occasionally feed during the day. This stage lasts around 4 weeks for those larvae that do not overwinter, and there are 3 moults in total.

The primary larval foodplants are Bents (various) (Agrostis spp.), Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum), Tor-grass (Brachypodium pinnatum), Wavy Hair-grass (Deschampsia flexuosa) and Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus).

Pupa

The green pupa is formed head down, attached by the cremaster to the foodplant or nearby vegetation and is extremely well camouflaged. This stage lasts around 2 weeks.

Shot this morning in the lake sammamish state park, south of Lake Sammamish. i arrived there around 6:45 am. stayed about two hours observing the birds. more animals compared to marymoor park, but nature here is far less interesting in my opinion. fog over the water wasn't that big either, but fine enough to have good bird shots. as yesterday morning, i only carried two lenses. the 70-200 f4 L and my big 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L. Since birds were the main goal this morning, i only used the latter.

it's actually the first time i'm concentrating at catching birds in flight. i understand what it feels now when i succeed at doing so. it's immensely satisfactory.
