Fastnet Rock (Irish: An Charraig Aonair, meaning Rock of Solitude or Lonesome Rock) is a small clay-slate island with quartz veins and the most southerly point of Ireland, 6.5 km southwest of Cape Clear Island (Oileán Chléire) in County Cork, which is itself 13 km (8 miles) from the mainland. It lies in the Atlantic Ocean 11.3 km south of mainland County Cork, at latitude 51.37°N. It rises to about 30 m above low water mark. Study of the documentary record suggests that the name is from Old Norse Hvastann-ey 'sharp tooth island'.

Divided into Fastnet Rock proper and the much smaller Little Fastnet to the south by a 10 m (30 ft) wide channel, it also had the nickname 'Ireland's Teardrop' as it was the last part of the country seen by Irish emigrants to the United States in the 19th century as they sailed past it.

I write a logbook in this lighthouse,

Autumn waning, winter coming

Wind from the North

Gelid blowing;

Sun cloud-shadowed,

shortening days.

ships wave battered,

ploughing ocean,

And every night

migrant birds calling.

Spindrift sprayed.

The tower windows;

A time of change

That's my log.

Taken with my 450d as my 5D Mark II is still in the repair shop at Canon

Another note to myself below this waterfall is a series of small waterfalls that require a visit soon :-)

Just finished a video of my trip to Karijini National Park. If you want to see some behind the scenes footage of this amazing place, head over to my blog and check it out.

On the last day of our trip to Karijini Mark Stothard and I did the canyoning trip down into the bottom of the gorge. This shot was taken at Junction Pool (where all the gorges meet) just under Oxters Lookout.

This tree is incredible, about a year and a half ago it fell into the water and continues to grow straight up from the water. We got to this spot at the perfect time, the light beams were backlighting the tree.

I love the contrast between the colours (red and blues in the rock) and greens in the tree and water.

More Karijini images to come.

The Aveiro Lagoon (Ria de Aveiro) is a coastal lagoon in Portugal. It is located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, south the municipalitiy of Espinho and north of Mira (to the north of the Cape Mondego). Its average area covers approximately 75 km². It is named after the city of Aveiro, which is the chief urban centre located nearby the lagoon. Other urban centres near the Ria de Aveiro are Ílhavo, Gafanha da Nazaré, Estarreja, Ovar and Esmoriz. Some beaches nearby include those of Barra, Costa Nova, Torreira, Vagueira, Furadouro, Cortegaça and Praia de Mira. There are also beaches in the São Jacinto Peninsula.

Well what can I say. I remember taking this at the festival last year - I don't particularly remember taking many of the others. A couple of hundred give or take - found their way on to my CF card, most not very memorable, but as I said this one I remember - and I'll tell you why.

You know when someone gives you a double take when you do something a little bit right of center, that inquisitive look that asks" did you really just do what I think you did" Well that's what I remember most about this - the look the missus gave me.

On reflection I don't, no let me correct that and say - I know it wasn't the fact that I had taken the shot of this young lady doing her thing in the 17th century that caused Liz to fire that warning glance across my bows. It was me acting all churlish and sheepish because I had taken the shot and thought that I'd got caught doing so, that's what caused the look.

If I live to be a hundred and thirty..........................

I don't think I can say who inspired me this, because it's kind of cliche..but you can say it's inspired by this amazing girl ;)

I edited this in picnik. I never did that before..and I never knew Picnik was so helpful :DD It totally help me tone down the sharp blue-ness background I had before!!

I STILL HAVEN'T STARTED STUDYING YET. D:

Gotta stop procrastinating......

I think I'll do tags here (:

1. Exams starts in 2 weeks!!!

2. I'm moving on from that guy. It's not worth waiting for a guy who avoided me for exactly 10 months. Moving to a new country means less connection, but I never thought he'll be avoiding me like this. I'll be in the same place as him next month. I doubt he'll be finding me anyway. Screw that promise of his about taking me everywhere after I come back, don't think that'll happen :/

3. I loove Bruno Marss <3

4. I use to love Taylor Swift. Well I still do, but she sings about stuff that well...frankly I think she sings too much about her life, like how she's the victim of whatever relationship she was in..I like her old songs when she really sings from her heart which I can actually relate to...

5. TEAM JUMBA IN AMAZING RACE. nuff said. <3 I support Mallory and Gary too ;) They're awesome! By the way did you guys see the latest episode? The bear in the race and Michael's reaction made me lol'd XDDD

6. David Choi. WongFuProductions. NigaHiga. YOUTUBE x)) They're my 3 favourites :DD (Nooo not because they're all asian, because they have amazing talents which I like :D)

7. Planning a getaway on an island in Hong Kong in early Jan with my friends :D

8. I cry myself to sleep sometimes. Not anymore but used to :s

9. I finally feel slightly at home here with my classmates, feeling less distant with them. But we have only 2 more weeks and we'll probably never see each other again (they want to change university..)

10. I want a new camera. My brother said he'll buy one for me for my birthday, but...I don't think he will :( I don't have a job either...D:

I stillllll have 2 more tags to do. But they're things I like tag, so I'll do one after exam and then do another one once I get back to Hong Kong, so it's like things I like in Aussie and things I like in Hongkie hahaha ;D

Those tagged...just want to say I love you all for supporting my stream by leaving comments/favorites/views here!! I'm sorry if I forgot anyone :o

___

Often, when dealing with environmental issues, the focus is solely on the animal species or ecosystems at risk of extinction, but we left on the sidelines or pay less attention to trees that are the foundation of ecosystems and play a key role in nature.

Some of the most typical trees of the Earth are also some who are at greater risk of extinction. It is worth sounding the alarm and support conservation efforts.

Gordes is a very beautiful old village, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, France. The stone buildings built in tight against the base of the cliffs and those perched on the rocks above, including the 12th-century castle, are made of an beige stone that glows orange in the morning sun. The view from the village is a southern panorama out across fields and forests and small perched villages to the Montagne du Luberon. Gordes is one of the "in" villages of Luberon where many movies stars and artists have made their home. Due to its privileged position, its exceptional charm and its typical architecture, Gordes has been listed as "one of the most beautiful villages of France".

This wonderful building was designed by one of the most prominent architectural firms in Philadelphia in the early 1900s, McKim, Mead, and White along with Frank Furness, another prominent architect of the time. The building was completed in 1931, one hundred years after Stephen Girard. After completion the building was used as the Girard Trust Company Building as a part of Stephen Girard's banking company. Stephen Girard is renowned for personally saving the United States economy during the War of 1812.

Today, the building is the location of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The well-known restaurant 10 Arts is located here. As well as the Richel D'Ambra Spa & Salon. I love the old Greek-inspired architecture of Philadelphia!

All rights reserved. Use without permission is illegal.

Entry Island (Île-d’Entrée in French) is an island off the east coast of the Magdalen Islands, which are part of the Canadian Province of Quebec. The island is 2 km wide and 3 km long. The island is located 12 km from the main port of Cap-aux-Meules of the Magdalen Islands. Entry Island is only accessible by the sea. Fishing is the main industry of the island with the lobster fishery being the most important, but some fishermen also harvest crab, scallops, whelk, mackerel, tuna and herring.

Visible as the first island when travelling by ferry from the Magdalen Islands, Entry Island can be identified by its lavishly tinted cliffs, the highest of which rises a sheer 559 feet (170.4 m) from the sea, and is the highest point of land in the archipelago. Fewer than 130 residents of Scottish and English origin inhabit this unique island. The island has two stores, a restaurant, an Anglican church, school, CLSC, museum, and post office; a Bed and Breakfast operates during the tourist season. (Wikipédia)

It's been a very long day at work today, left the house at 7:30 this morning, got back at 9:30 tonight and have had a somewhat hectic time inbetween (productive though!) I'm quite surprised I managed to remember to take a photo of the day tonight with the little brain function I have left! LOL!

There is (as often the case!) a bit of a story here. Some of the older children at school were selling flowers this evening as part of their enterprise project. When I left to come home there was just one sad and lonely and very wilted gerbera sitting in a bucket of water. It looked such a sad specimen I couldn't resist taking it home, giving it a trim and some water and then immortalising it with a photo! There's something quite satisfying about taking an ugly duckling and turning into a swan! ;-))

Anyway, the Gerbera has perked up and I'm waffling, I should really go to bed! Will catch up tomorrow! :-)

An egret at the Lafitte Nature Study Park, Lafitte, Louisiana. Several egrets are nesting in the back of the park in the cypress trees. The trees are full of spanish moss, hanging much like curtains! This bird is a female and she rules this nest! When the male brings a stick she takes the stick and puts it in the nest then hits him with her bill so he will leave and get another! Then she stands there and continues to display until he returns! Hmmm...she thinks like she is human! :-)

By an unlucky chance a Fox fell into a deep well from which he could not get out. A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there.

"Oh, have you not heard?" said the Fox; "there is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down here in order to be sure to have water by me. Why don't you come down too?"

The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the well. But the Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the well.

"Good-bye, friend," said the Fox, "remember next time:

“Hells Gates” is the name of the entrance to Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s remote west coast. The navigation channel is notoriously shallow and is only 84 metres wide at its narrowest point between Entrance Island on the left and Macquarie Heads on the far right. Especially in the nineteenth century, navigating the channel was hazardous. This, however, was not the reason for its name which derived instead from the fact that it was the entrance not simply to Macquarie Harbour but more specifically to Sarah Island.

Established in 1822 as a place of secondary punishment for convicts who re-offended after their arrival in the colony, Sarah Island was designed to be a Hell on Earth for those who were sent there. The intention was that the mere mention of its name would strike fear into every convict in the colony and be a dreaded warning of the fate that could befall any who stepped out of line.

For photographs and additional information on Sarah Island, see my images 0225 and 0226. For photographs and information related to the convict system in general (and to the Port Arthur penal settlement in particular), take a look at my images 0254 to 0262.

*The photograph was taken approaching the Harbour from the open ocean with the Entrance Island Lighthouse on the left. The lighthouse in the distance is on Button Island. Shortly before our arrival a small bushfire had broken out on the southern shore and, as if in imitation of the sulphurous fumes of Hell, smoke was drifting across the entrance to the harbour.

Over the Rainbow on Black (much better and easier to see)

I decided to make my first post back one of my favorites from our recent trip to Brazil. Iguazu Falls was a true highlight of the trip. I have many shots from the Falls to process, and no matter how many I post, they won't do this place justice. The vastness of this location, with the 275+ falls ranging from small streams to true mammoths, is just amazing.

I had never witnessed a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow) before. While it was a little faint to the eye, you could still make it out pretty clearly, and the 30 second exposure helped to bring it out that much more. I decided not to over-process the shot and brighten and saturate things beyond the true scene. I'm not sure there was ever much risk, but I did enjoy the part about having to keep an eye out for jaguars when walking around the park at night.

I look forward to going through the numerous memory cards' worth of shots. We saw a lot of great sites in Brazil, but as is always the case, it's good to be back home. This was another trip that makes one reflect on how lucky we are here in the U.S.

I look forward to catching up with everyone's streams.
