One of the many ground squirrels (aka marmots or groundhogs) of the Grand Canyon. Taken on the South Rim trail with a 55mm (equiv. 82mm), no crop. Despite the signs, the cute furry balls are clearly fed by the hords of tourists, otherwise they wouldn't display this behaviour (and size !).

Paul C. Buff Einstein E640 through a Paul C. Buff 8.5-inch Silver High Output Reflector with a 30 degree grid directly behind the subject camera right. This light does not have a gel. The difference between gel and no gel (just a 1/8 CTO) can be seen in the difference between the light on her face and the light on her hair and also between the light on the front and back side of her left shoulder.

With an area of more than 200,000 km2, it is world's 7th largest desert and also Asia's 3rd largest desert. The Thar desert along with the Sahara desert of Africa, Arabian peninsula desert, and Cholistan desert in Pakistan are part of the same desert formation. With the recent activity of rowdy Flashin' Dan (the male Rufous Hummingbird that thas taken over as lord of the feeders) I was afraid that Victor may have left for more tranquil grounds. While I was out this evening under clouded skies, a sudden buzz, followed by a brillant flash of pink let me know that he was still about.

This is the shape I was looking for, very hard to synchronize.

It's a combination of sound generated drops like this and collision like this.

The subwoofer vibration generates the "pillar", then another drop collides on top of it forming the "hat".

Too bad the flash got bad synch in this one, you can see some ghosting, mouse over the image.

- - -

Celine Dion sings Eric Carmen's smasher

A husband looking through a newspaper came upon a study that said women use more words than men.

Excited to prove to his wife that he had been right all along when he accused her of talking too much, he showed her the study results. It read "Men use about 15,000 words per day, but women use 30,000".

The wife thought for a while, then finally she said to her husband "It's because we have to repeat everything we say."

The husband said "What?"

Oh and Happy Father's day

When I was young

I never needed anyone

And making love was just for fun

Those days are gone

Livin' alone

I think of all the friends I've known

When I dial the telephone

Nobody's home

All by myself

Don't wanna be

All by myself

Anymore

Hard to be sure

Sometimes I feel so insecure

And loves so distant and obscure

Remains the cure

All by myself

Don't wanna be

All by myself

Anymore

All by myself

Don't wanna live

All by myself

Anymore

At the farmer's market with a dear friend this weekend I saw the most beautiful bouquet of flowers *ever* ... I felt like I had wandered through a huge english garden in the countryside and picked the flowers myself. They were so natural and beautiful and real, you know what I mean?

And the colors ... oh my sweet lord the colors! I couldn't decide between two of them so I bought both. Best $10 I ever spent, because I can't believe how many gorgeous photos I got out of one session of admiring them with my macro lens. Wow. I am in love!

Over the Rainbow on Black (much better and easier to see)

I decided to make my first post back one of my favorites from our recent trip to Brazil. Iguazu Falls was a true highlight of the trip. I have many shots from the Falls to process, and no matter how many I post, they won't do this place justice. The vastness of this location, with the 275+ falls ranging from small streams to true mammoths, is just amazing.

I had never witnessed a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow) before. While it was a little faint to the eye, you could still make it out pretty clearly, and the 30 second exposure helped to bring it out that much more. I decided not to over-process the shot and brighten and saturate things beyond the true scene. I'm not sure there was ever much risk, but I did enjoy the part about having to keep an eye out for jaguars when walking around the park at night.

I look forward to going through the numerous memory cards' worth of shots. We saw a lot of great sites in Brazil, but as is always the case, it's good to be back home. This was another trip that makes one reflect on how lucky we are here in the U.S.

I look forward to catching up with everyone's streams.

Argentina is gorgeous. Have I said that before? Doesn't it go without saying by now?

You really get to know a set of mountains when you have to hike around them. Fortunately, in the middle of these death marches, I was able to stop and drink in some of the scenery. It took a lot longer than necessary to get to the destination, but at least I arrived with a camera full of photos. That beautiful peak in the distance is Fitz Roy. I was very lucky to see it, because 90% of the time it's covered with clouds.

So, last night something else lucky happened! Here are the high points:

- I did an interview that aired on NBC at 10 PM here in Austin. The segment was all about HDR and turned out really well. Jim Swift interviewed me and he did a great job editing together a nice little story. You can see the full video in the upper left hand area of the TV Station's KXAN site.

-- You guys should contact your local NBC affiliates and ask them to get the segment from KXAN - that would be cool!

-- The story also mentioned the HDR Tutorial, which you can get to via that link.

- The news segment mentioned an upcoming PhotoWalk in Austin on August 6 that I am organizing. You can find out more inside the Facebook Event!

Peacock bass is the common name in English for several species of tropical, freshwater fish of the genus Cichla native to the Amazon River basin of South America. These tropical fish are not true basses, but are rather cichlids. They also inhabit the waters of Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Panama, Singapore and parts of the USA (Guam, Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the United States Virgin Islands).

Sport fishermen have made these cichlids prized game fish for their fighting qualities, so much so that many travel agencies now arrange fishing trips to Brazil and Florida specifically to catch peacock bass.

Renowned American peacock bass fisherman and fishing author, Larry Larsen, refers to them as "freshwater bullies" due to their ferocious nature when hunting and their tendency to damage and sometimes destroy fishing gear when striking. Also, the most common techniques for catching them are similar to those for catching largemouth bass with the notable exception that peacock bass usually won't strike artificial worms -- a widely used lure among largemouth bass fisherman. In addition, fly fishing techniques, including lures such as poppers and large streamers, are becoming increasingly popular for catching these cichlids.

Despite their popularity among anglers, some naturalists have identified peacock bass as potential pests for causing ecological imbalances in some of their introduced areas.

For Those Who May Have Missed Yesterdays Up-Load ~

There were many, many reasons I recently took a long break from flickr, some family, some health, but I guess the bottom line was that I had become bored with single shot posting ! A flower shot is a flower shot, a portrait is a portrait and there is nothing wrong in doing them, (I have many in my photo'stream) but the same cannot be said about any photograph that has some form of action as its theme, or a background story ! I don't think any of my recent photograph posting would have been the same had it just consisited of one photo ' ! My break also remined me that the real core of flickr is about photo' sharing and commenting and not an obsession about FP and/or Explore ! So I make no apology for wanting to share my photographs in flickr, as that is why I' m here, and if people wish to recipropcate thats fine by me, and if they don't, that's fine by me too ! I' m 63 years old and as each day goes by my life expectancy decreases ! If you have read this, then a huge thank you, agreement or dis-agreement is a part of life ~ tomorrow is another day !

So this started as a joke shot that was way over-exposed for me to consider using originally. Once I started playing with color trying to save it, I ended up really liking it.

The sun was perfectly inline and almost setting down the stream. One of the members joked about them all getting in the water for the last photo and everyone called his bluff. You shouldn't be doing that in November in Ohio.

This photo resumes well why I shoot RAW and HDR.

RAW, because many cameras (especially Canon) would struggle with White Balance in this situation. Out of the camera, the photo had a pretty strong orange cast on it, the carousel had almost not colors. Of course, the blue sky is a bit weird but I preferred it this way.

I could set up my WB properly when taking the shot but that would be so much time consuming, so RAW is my way.

HDR because there is not way I would have got all the details in the carousel being dark at night and lit be strong lamps in comparaison. Also, the moon would have been much brighter and over exposed.

!!! Happy Wednesday !!!

The fellas were a pleasure to work with. They were super laid back, very easy to work with and real polite. We had a really good time shooting this, with the exception of ridiculous amounts of bugs. Colin (middle) lives on a lake outside of Richmond and that is were we shot. Right behind those trees is a beautiful lake, but it attracts of lot of bugs.

We hung all the lights together and the guys made the power supplies themselves to power up the lights through a small generator. Since it was so dark and I didn't want to kill the ambient light from the bulbs, I ended up shooting with a AB-400 with my octobox on it, but without the white diffusion panels and only used the modeling lamp. Overall, it was a good shoot and I pretty happy with the results!

Lighting: AB-400 with octobox in front and above. Modeling lamp only.

Looks SO Much Better on Black and LARGE

I want to dedicate this shot to 3 very special friends that I have met here on Flickr. These 3 men have helped me become a better photographer and person. They have helped me grow outside of the studio and taught me so much along the way. They are amazing photographers and I have been a HUGE fan of their work for quite sometime. Every time I visit their streams they inspire me to go out and attempt to shoot these beautiful natural sceneries!

I picked up a camera for the very first time June 2008, however I did not learn to take it off auto mode until November of last year. I had never owned a camera before this, besides my cell phone. I wanted to take landscape and seascape pictures, but had no idea how to. I then found my passion in portraits, and capturing a person forever through a still-image. Until, I met Steven, Doug, and John, they helped inspire me and teach me how to take the shots that had made me want to pick up a camera in the first place.

I feel very blessed to have met them and become such good friend with them. I have met so many of you through Flickr, and I am grateful for each and every one that I have met. You have all helped me in some way!

Thank you and God Bless,

Hector

The Dark Green Fritillary is the most widespread fritillary found in the British Isles and is a pleasure to see as it flies powerfully over its grassland habitats, frequently stopping to nectar on Thistles and Knapweed. It gets its name from the green hue found on the underside of the hindwings, which are peppered with large silver spots. This butterfly can be found throughout the British Isles, although it is less common in central and eastern England. Outside of central Scotland and southern England, it is most frequently found in coastal areas and is the only fritillary found in Orkney and the Outer Hebrides. Despite its powerful flight, it is somewhat surprising that this species is not particularly mobile, staying within its breeding grounds.

Taxonomy Notes

Historically, several authorities have referred to f. scotica, defined in Watkins (1923), that is not recognised in current taxonomy. This form differs from the nominate form in that individuals are larger in size have much heavier black markings on both upper and undersides, especially in the female, and the underside has a darker green flush, with more prominent silver spots on both fore and hindwings. Different authorities described different distributions of scotica. Dennis (1977) says "The most extreme development of the morph is found in the Outer Hebrides, especially on Pabbay (Barra group), south Rona, north Raasay and on Orkney. Subspecies scotica has also been described by Heslop-Harrison for Scalpay, Soay, Rhum, Eigg, Canna and Coll, but everywhere in addition to specimens showing extreme development, others transitional to aglaia are found". The most recent analysis is given in Thomson (1980). Riley (2007) suggests that this form is found in Scotland (apart from southern localities), Ireland (where it is the only form found) and the Isle of Man. However, Riley's inclusion of Ireland is questioned by Nash (2012) who assigns all Irish specimens to ssp. aglaja. Thomson (1980), Emmet (1990), Riley (2007) and Nash (2012) elevate the aglaja forms to subspecific status. The counties where scotica was thought to be found, as mentioned by Thomson (1980), are shaded green in the image below.

Argynnis aglaja

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1758) as shown here (type locality: Sweden).

The nominate form is found throughout its range in the British Isles.

Conservation Status

Although this species has declined considerably since the 1970s, especially in eastern England, the butterfly remains our most widespread fritillary and is not considered a priority species for conservation efforts.

Habitat

The characteristic habitat of this butterfly is open, windswept calcareous grassland. However, in some areas it can also be found in woodland clearings and coastal dunes.

Life Cycle

Adults generally emerge in the middle of June, reaching a peak in early July. In northern Scotland, adults emerge a little later at the end of June, reaching a peak at the end of July and early August. There is one generation each year.

Imago

Both sexes are avid nectar feeders and typically feed in early morning or late afternoon, when they will constantly fly from flower head to flower head staying at each flower for only a few seconds. This behaviour makes them very difficult to observe and it is sometimes easier to find a favourite flower and wait for a butterfly to come to you!

The males are the more conspicuous of the two sexes, and can be seen patrolling over large areas of habitat looking for a virgin female which often rest low down in vegetation. Once found, mating takes place almost immediately. A mating pair may be found resting on vegetation and will even continue to nectar while coupled.

Females are somewhat-easier to see when egg-laying, where they intersperse periods of nectaring with basking and bouts of egg-laying, when they will crawl deep in vegetation, searching out the lushest growths of larval foodplant before laying a single egg, although several eggs are often laid in the same area.

Ovum

Eggs are laid either directly on the foodplant, or on a suitable platform nearby, such as a twig, grass stem or dead leaf. Eggs are yellow when first laid but turn a dark purple after a few days and, eventually, a dark grey just before the larva emerges. This stage lasts between 2 and 3 weeks.

Larva

The larva eats the eggshell on hatching and immediately enters hibernation in a curled up leaf or other piece of debris. The larva emerges in the spring and starts to feed on the tenderest new growth of the foodplant, either eating large chunks out of the leaf lobes, or eating the leaf entirely with the stem left standing. The larva is most active during sunny periods and can often be seen wandering across bare ground or short turf in search of the foodplant. The mature larva has a distinct colouring, being mostly black with a feint yellow band running down its back and a series of red spots running down each side. There are 5 moults in total.

The primary larval foodplants are Common Dog-violet (Viola riviniana), Hairy Violet (Viola hirta) and Marsh Violet (Viola palustris).

Pupa

The larva creates a loose tent by drawing together several leaves and other pieces of vegetation together. The pupa is formed upside down, secured to the top of the tent by the cremaster. This stages lasts between 3 and 4 weeks, depending on the weather.

The Wave is a spectacular sandstone formation on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes in the beautiful and rugged Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, … just south of the Utah-Arizona border about halfway between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona.

This incredible formation can be reached by hiking approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) across rugged, trailless landscape, making the round-trip to and from The Wave a nearly 6-mile (9.7-kilometer) hike that climbs about 350 feet (107 meters) in altitude [sic]. The area can be really hot in summer (100 F +), so it is best to start the hike early. --from Wiki

Well, my friend and I hiked this late, staying over sunset in The Wave. It is an incredibly beautiful area, and I'd love to get back there.

Hiking back through the darkness was pretty exhilarating, but I could see it being nearly impossible and very stressful without a GPS. Carins are few and far between, and nearly impossible to locate at night, even with flashlights. Fortunately, there are a couple washes that cross at pretty identifiable areas on the trail; identifiable enough where we could see by a crescent moon and be okay.
