Hi !

I post some pics taken with Pentacon 4/200. Sharpest at f/8 and f/11, not so well at f4( vigniette), not even at f/16. At 1/250 sec. It's good indeed in a sunny days, morning and late afternoon, not in the evening, nor in winter time.Pentacon 2.8/135 it's much better than P 200.

From the parish website:

Since 1834, The Parish Church of St. Luke has been a place of worship for Anglicans in Halton County. Chief Joseph Brant gave the land for church use and his daughter, Elizabeth Kerr, supported the founding of St. Luke's. The parish has continued this legacy of tradition while meeting the needs of the contemporary world.

At the turn of the 19th century there were no Anglican churches in Halton County, the nearest being Ancaster. The Diocese, of which it was part, stretched from Quebec to the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Erie in the west. It was under the jurisdiction of the first Anglican Bishop of Quebec, The Right Reverend Jacob Mountain.

About this time, a steady influx of immigrants from the United Kingdom began to settle in isolated communities. Their only contact with any form of organized religion was with Methodist preachers who used the stump of a tree for a pulpit, and a clearing for their church.

Baptists and other sects were also round and about, and those back woodsmen liked to hear a "Hell Fire" preacher. There were few Anglican clergymen, and their old style system of Anglicanism was not too well accepted in the new world. What clergymen there were, came mostly from England. A great debt is owed Trinity College, Dublin, for many of its graduates served Upper Canada. They were considered the best, because of their willingness to remain at their posts amidst the most primitive conditions.

It was not until the 1830's that the Church of England became in any way extensive in Halton County when they began in earnest to wage their contest for souls. The Diocese, then under Bishop Charles J. Stewart, was assisted in its missionary endeavours by the Stewart missions, which was organized by his nephew. They provided funds for travelling missionaries and made possible the work of such men as Adam Elliot, William McMurray, Thomas Greene, and many others. The record of achievements is a magnificent one, for these men were just as indefatigable as any Methodist itinerant.

The ultimate result was the birth of the first Anglican Church in Halton County. St. Luke's is the oldest church in Burlington. The land which St. Luke's is built on was given to Joseph Brant, the famous Mohawk leader, for his services to British-Canadian forces during the American Revolution. Brant, who had been an Anglican since the age of twenty, gave the land to his daughter, Elizabeth. She, in turn, donated the land for the construction of a church, the first of its kind in the area.

The original church building was completed in the Fall of 1834, and was consecrated (dedicated) in 1838. The first Rector was the Reverend Doctor Thomas Greene, who remained at St. Luke's for forty years. Doctor Greene, and several other Rectors of St. Luke's are buried in the cemetery. In over 165 years, St. Luke's has only had ten Rectors, several of whom have gone on to become Bishops.

St. Luke's has many stained glass windows, showing scenes from the Bible and many Saints, including St. Luke, of course. The Arms of The Parish Church of St. Luke, includes the "winged ox" representing St. Luke, waves, which symbolized the waters of Baptism, and a St. George Cross, which represents the first Christian.

I was killing time waiting for a concert to start when I came across St. Luke’s brightly lit against the night. I didn't have a tripod with me, so made do by holding my camera on the ground and hoping my hands didn’t shake too much.

Sebastes carnatus

I went sightseeing to the Farallon Islands last weekend before the storm. It was my first time out there and the highlight was probably seeing 20 to 30 humpback whales surface feeding over Fanny Shoals.

The Farallon Islands have a long history of bird egg harvesting, fur seal harvesting, whaling, and fishing. It was also the site of nuclear waste disposal during the first 30 years of the cold war. The aircraft carrier Independence, a target ship for two atmospheric nuclear tests, was purposefully scuttled to the west of the Islands.

We caught rockfish, lingcod, and sanddabs. It wasn't a great fishing day, but as the others sent me home with some of their catch I probably won't be buying fish for a month or so.

Sebastes species are slow growing territorial predators with venomous spines in their dorsal and anal fins. Several species are known to live 100 to 200 years. The group is commonly sold as "red snapper" in fish markets. There are about 130 species in the genus and many species have multiple color morphs -- making field identification difficult for sport and commercial fishermen. Several (if not all) Sebastes species are endangered by overfishing. Catch and release of non-target species is complicated by the expansion of air in the internal organs of Sebastes during retrieval. While they appear paralyzed or dead at the surface, Sebastes caught in less than 200 feet water can be returned to successfully to depth using special techniques involving weights and reverse barbless hooks or open bottom containers. Marine sanctuaries off the California coast will soon protect limited geographical sites from all fishing.

Next time I want to send a camera down there.

The Blackmagic Ultra Lite does a lot with a little! It is a combination of our Blackmagic Top Handle with a pair of rods running above the camera. It mounts with a 5” Z-rail that attaches to the top of your camera via two ¼ 20 screws. The Blackmagic Top Handle and each of the 7” male/female threaded rods attach independently across the 5” rail with a Zacuto quick release ratcheting lever. The rods and the handles can freely slide side to side on the Z-rail for balance and can be set facing backwards or forwards. You can set the 7” rods lightweight spaced (60mm) over the camera lens to hold a follow focus or matte box. You can also attach accessories to each rail and to the rod running through the handle using a Zacuto Z-release mount. This kit has endless possibilities!

Zacuto dovetail accessories are adjustable to work with Z-Rail, NATO, SWAT, RED, PICATINNY, and WOODEN CAMERA rails.

Kit Includes:

Blackmagic Top Handle

7" Black Rod Set

2x Z-rail to Rod Mount connectors

Lest We Forget

World War I, a.k.a. First World War -

The Great War

"The War to End All Wars"

It was a total war which left millions dead and helped to shape the modern world.

At 11:00am on November 11, 1918 —

eleventh hour

eleventh day

eleventh month —

A ceasefire came into effect and the opposing armies on the Western Front began to withdraw from their positions.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

— Lt.-Col. John McCrae

The poem "In Flanders Fields" by the Canadian army physician John McCrae remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915.

"This poem was literally born of fire and blood during the hottest phase of the second battle of Ypres. My headquarters were in a trench on the top of the bank of the Ypres Canal, and John had his dressing station in a hole dug in the foot of the bank. During periods in the battle men who were shot actually rolled down the bank into his dressing station.

Along from us a few hundred yards was the headquarters of a regiment, and many times during the sixteen days of battle, he and I watched them burying their dead whenever there was a lull. Thus the crosses, row on row, grew into a good-sized cemetery.

Just as he describes, we often heard in the mornings the larks singing high in the air, between the crash of the shell and the reports of the guns in the battery just beside us.

I have a letter from him in which he mentions having written the poem to pass away the time between the arrival of batches of wounded, and partly as an experiment with several varieties of poetic metre." Lieutenant Colonel Edward Morrison

Thousands demonstrated on Friday in Tahrir Square, demanding public trial of Mubarak, his interior ministry Habib el-Adly, and other regime figures.

The square and the surrounding streets since early morning have been emptied from all police and military presence. Most of the established political forces, most notably the Muslim Brothers, did not take part in the demonstrations.

The families of the martyrs were present, and demanded speedy trials of the police murderers, as it's becoming clear day by day that they will get away with what they did. More shockingly, most police officers who are currently undergoing trial still hold their positions (or have been promoted)! Demonstrators also denounced the brutal police crackdown on the protests in the square on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Protesters marched, in solidarity with the detainees, by 4pm on the ministerial cabinet headquarters and the interior ministry. Policemen from inside the interior ministry's compound threw rocks and were making provocative gestures with their hands. Protesters responded by rocks and a shower of insults and chants against both the military and the police.

I've heard very strong chants, demanding the execution of Mubarak, Adly and Field Marshal Tantawi. While some are staging a sit in at the moment, others will resume protesting on Saturday, in the run up to the mass protests planned next Friday 8 July.

About the Shot

Usually when I visit the zoo, the baboons are frolicking up the back of their sizeable enclosure, too far away for my 200mm to reach. This time, I arrived at the viewing window to find a huge crowd of people gathered. I waited patiently for a couple of minutes then pushed to the front to be greeted with this lovely sight. Two of the zoo's newest babies right down the front. I'm going to guess that the wee one with the grass in his mouth is Chandu. He was more confident than the other one. Within minutes the youngsters were scooped up and carried away so I got there just at the right time.

About the Baboon Babies

Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed the first of its spring arrivals in the form of three baby gelada baboons. The new additions, which are the first gelada babies to be born at the Zoo, have been named Chandu, Chibale and Chiku. Chandu, who was the first to arrive on 10 February, is the only one to be sexed so far and is a boy. Chibale, whose name means kinship, followed on 6 March and Chiku, whose name means chatter, finally arrived on 10 March. The names for the three baboons have been chosen by their keepers to reflect the Ethiopian origin of this species.

Gelada baboons have only been part of the animal collection since 2007 when a group of seven arrived from Rheine Zoo in Germany. In 2008 the Zoo received a male called Malachi from Colchester Zoo who is father to all three babies.

Gelada baboons live in the Ethiopian Highlands. They live in large troops, led by one dominant male, with younger males, females and infants of all ages making up the rest of the group. They are currently in danger of extinction due to the expansion of the local human population. Not only do they have to compete for land but they are also targeted by farmers who suspect them of crop-raiding.

Georgina Cook, one of the Primate Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo, said:

“We’re really happy that our gelada group have bred successfully as it means that they have settled in really well. The youngsters have already started exploring the enclosure on their own and we’re sure they will prove to be very popular with visitors.”

The Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) is a member of the passerine bird family Hirundinidae — the swallows and martins.

It breeds in North America and Mexico, and is migratory, wintering in western South America from Venezuela southwards to northeast Argentina. This species is a very rare vagrant to western Europe.

This bird averages 13 cm (5 inches) long with a tiny bill. The adult has an iridescent blue back and crown, brown wings and tail, and buff rump. The nape and forehead are white. The underparts are white except for a red face. The tail is square-ended.

Young birds are essentially brown above and whitish below, except for the buff rump and dark face.

The only confusion species is the closely related Cave Swallow, which is richer in colour and has a cinnamon rump and forehead.

This is the music room of the Amasya Darul-sifa which was a clinic and a hospital that was built in 1308-1309 (after the time of Selcuks, before Ottoman period)and may have been the first place to try to treat mental disorders with music and by using flowing water on the walls of the structure....They believed sound of water was healing for the mind...That made a lot of sense to me as I was sitting in the room and listening the "Ney" class...The acoustics were incredible..

I wanted to show you how amaising this room is ..so I decided to upload this full scale...Please either view it original (which is HUUUGE) and study the instruments of the Ottoman era or view it large in black..You will be amaised at the details..I promise!!

ENGLISH

In many countries, Kilometre Zero (also written km 0) or similar terms in other languages, is a particular location (often in the nation's capital city), from which distances are traditionally measured. A similar notion also exists for individual roads (that is, all locations on the road have a number, depending on their distance from that location), and for individual cities (often the city's central post office is used for this).

The most famous such marker of which any part survives from ancient times is the Milliarium Aureum ("Golden Milestone") of the Roman Empire, believed to be the literal origin for the maxim that "all roads lead to Rome."

Spain has its Kilometre Zero in the centre of the Puerta del Sol in Madrid (incidentally, the clock of the old Royal House of the Post Office, in front of which the plaque is located, marks the official time in Spain, according to the urban legend). The plaque that marks this point was turned around 180 degrees in 2002, because the map of Spain depicted on it was upside-down in relation to reality.

CASTELLANO

Rare Crested Saguaro Cactus at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.

INFORMATION ON THE SAGUARO CACTUS:

The Saguaro, pronounced "sah-wah-roh", (Carnegiea gigantea) is a large, tree-sized cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and California, United States and northern Mexico.

Saguaros are slow growing, taking up to 75 years to develop a side arm. The arms themselves are grown to increase the plants reproductive capacity (more apices equal more flowers and fruit). The growth rate of saguaros is strongly dependent on local precipitation patterns, and saguaros in drier western Arizona grow only half as fast as those in and around Tucson, Arizona. Some specimens may live for more than 150 years; the champion saguaro grows in Maricopa County, Arizona and is 13.8 m tall with a girth of 3.1 m. (It was injured as a result of the Cave Creek Complex fire in June 2005.) In addition to being slow growing, they are also slow to propagate. These two factors argue for the placement of the saguaro on the endangered species list, although they are not on any such list. Harming one in any manner (including cactus plugging) is illegal by state law in Arizona, and when houses or highways are built, special permits must be obtained to move or destroy any saguaro affected.

The ribs of the saguaro are used for construction and other purposes by aboriginal Americans of the region. A fine example can be seen in the roofing of the cloisters of the Mission San Xavier del Bac on the Tohono O'odham lands near Tucson, Arizona. The Seri people of northwestern Mexico used the plant, which they call mojépe, for a number of purposes.

The saguaro blossom is the state flower of Arizona.

Last night, I was realizing one of my ‘photo's concept’ and my cat was very inquiring why I spent so much time in the kitchen with some singular and strange things. Photos from the concept are still in progress… but what we have there. Yep, that’s right, he veiled the photos’ objects. He is so cute... so cute so jealous =D

don’t you forget about me

don‘t, don‘t, don ‘t, don‘t

don’t you forget about me

will you stand above me?

look my way, never love me

rain keeps falling

rain keeps halling

down, down, down

will you recognize me?

call my name or walk on by

rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling

down, down, down

don’t you try and pretend

it’s my beginning

we’ll win in the end, oh

harm you or touch your defences, vanity, insecurity

don’t you forget about me

I’ll be alone

dancing you know it baby

going to take you apart

I’ll put us back together at heart baby.

as you walk on by

will you call my name?

as you walk on by

will you call my name?

when you walk away

oh will you walk away?
